The Promises of God: 10 Powerful Bible Verses

by Josh on February 26, 2011 · 151 comments · Print Print · Email Email

The Bible is the word of God and is powerful and life changing. The promises of God start with 2 Timothy 3:16 when God tells us that all Scriptures in the Bible are inspired by God. With this promise of God in hand we can then be assured that what we learn in the Bible comes from Him!

Check out these lyrics from this song or click at the video on the right to see Alan Jackson sing this.

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
Listening every moment to the Spirit’s call
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.

Are you standing on the promises of God today? Is God your all in all?

Read through them slowly and let God work these promises into your hearts. These scriptures come from both the old and new testament. 10 Scriptures About God’s Promises

2 Peter 1:4

And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Matthew 11:28-29

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Isaiah 40:29-31

He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint.

Philippians 4:19

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:37-39

No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Proverbs 1:33

But all who listen to me will live in peace,
untroubled by fear of harm.”

John 14:27

“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

Romans 10:9

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thanks for the encouragment. Unfortunately, several of these verses were misinterpreted or misapplied. A proverb is a general principle in which the world works. It is NOT a promise. (Re: the Proverbs 1:33 quote). Contrary to this misapplied quote, many will seek to harm you if you follow God. This is clear from the New Testament- for instance, the fate of 11 of the 12 disciples. The quote from Jeremiah in context was written specifically to the Jews who were in captivity, regarding their future freedom as a people.

Joey, thank you so much my friend for not only visiting this site but for your comments. I reviewed each of these scriptures and believe that there is no misapplications or mistranslations at all. These are promises. All of the Bible verses are conditional principles, yes, but these principles can not be said to not be promised if practiced. For example Prov. 1:33 “but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” God will bring them safety and they can live in freedom of fear if they will listen. This is as much a promise and it is a principle.

Phil 4:19 ” And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.” This is not a principle in general in what he says “works in the world.” These scriptures and all scripture is not for the world or those who are not saved. I am living proof that He has supplied all my needs, not wants. Above all, He supplied me with the need for salvation found only in Christ. Only those promises of judgment such as found in Revelation 20 for example are general principles alone for those who are not saved.

Another example is ” For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord” is a promise that God imparts to us eternal life but only thru Jesus Christ and it is a free gift. When we come to Christ, this promise is one from God that is certain and who can argue with God?

As for the Jeremiah 29:11 quote that he said was intended for the Jews. Yes it was given to the Jews but this promise is for all who follow thru on this as in the following verses 12-13 “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. ” This is not a promise only for the Jews but for all who call on Him and pray to Him and He hears and answers our prayers that when we seek Him and find Him He will be found when seeking Him with all your heart. This is a powerful analogy for those who call on God for salvation and we are all held captive by the Prince of the Power of the air, the god of this world, who deceives the whole world. By the way, Paul says with Christ there is neither Jew nor Gentile (Greek), slave or free, for “But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart (for Jew and Gentile), by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.” (Rom 2:29). And in Galatians 3:29 “If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

God’s promises, like the rainbow to Noah, are not as much principles but promises which no man can break and will be fulfilled…to Jew and Gentile alike. By the way, the fate of the 11 of 12 disciples was told beforehand by Jesus Christ himself in Matthew 24 & 25 in the Olivet Discourse.

I thank God that “Whereby are given unto us Exceeding Great and Precious Promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the Divine Nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust”
(2 Peter 1:4).

All of Gods promises revolve around leaning and loving Him, if God is for us who is stronger than Him? No one, He is the Creator of all. Why do we worry then and have fear? I pray that we all not only hear Gods promises, but get that revelation. Bless all!

Hello all, I wanted to know how Satan is the ruler of this earth? When God created all things, and even in the book of Job he had to ask God for permission to destroy Job’s family! Can someone help me with this question please? Yes I know that Satan has power, but God created Satan correct? So God is the ruler of Heaven and Earth! Be blessed and forever encouraged in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!

Reply

Jack January 16, 2012 at 2:37 pm

Hello Marko. Thank you for your comment and question. Yes, you are right that Satan had to ask permission to afflict Job and Satan has as much power as God allows him but we are not match for him for sure. That is why Christians are to put on the armor of God to battle the spiritual warfare that is going on. For believers, God is the God of all the universe and reigns supreme but he allows Satan to influence the entire world. In fact Satan is said to have deceived the whole world. Rev. 12:9 says, “The great dragon was hurled down–that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.”

We are the children of God but 1 John 5:19 says, “We know that we are children of God, and that the WHOLE world is under the control of the evil one(Satan).” Believers USED to walk under his power (Eph. 2:2) but not once we are saved. Satan was judged at Calvary and lost his authority over Christians as John 12:31 says, “Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.”

The Bible actually says that Satan is the GOD OF THIS WORLD, “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God (2 Cor 4:4).” Satan actually offered the kingdoms of the world to Christ if Jesus would only worship him, in Matthew 4: 1 “Then was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.” Then Matthew 4:8-10 says, “the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.” Now Satan could not offer what he did not posses and he offered Jesus all the “kingdoms of the world…all this I will give you…if you will bow down and worship me.” Satan could not offer what he didn’t rule but Satan wanted Jesus to take a short cut and skip Calvary because Satan knew he would be defeated at the cross. God rules over all but he allows Satan to rule this earth and have as much power of it as God allows. I hope this helps. Thank you for your question.

Question… Someone asked me, “How come every christian I know is miserable? How can they say to come to Jesus and it seems like I have more joy in life than they do?” Are christians suppose to live a more joyful life or not?? The bible says alot about having a more abundant life, about joy, about blessings but it also says things like, “take your part in suffering as a true soldier of GOD” also things like, “pass through the fire to become purified like gold”

I hear preachers say that if satan isn’t attacking you then that means he already has you. I also hear the same preachers telling people to come to Jesus cause its a better life. I think to myself…. My father (GOD) is the owner of everything… I should never need anything cause my father provides. I lean on that quite a bit. I believe that a christian should be happy always because we don’t need anything. The bible also says, “rebuke satan and he shall flee” so how can satan attack my life when all I have to do is rebuke him in Jesus name?? This is what I believe, but then I think about all the people in the bible who served GOD and alot of them suffered ALOT. Job especially. He lost everything.

I couldn’t answer this guy because I find myself wondering the same thing. Please, PLEASE help me understand this. Should christians suffer or should they live in peace??

Reply

Jack January 26, 2012 at 2:59 pm

Juan, thank you sir for your comment and questions. Your friend is wrong that every Christian he sees is not happy. By the way, God never promises Christians happiness. Happiness is based upon happenings…but joy is given to each believer even though many do not live with this evident in their life and many Christians are bad examples when they go thru sufferings. Your friend really doesn’t have more joy…he is just trying to give you reasons, I believe, that he doesn’t want to be a Christian. No unbeliever can have true and everlasting joy because some day they will face Jesus on Judgment Day (Rev. 20:10-12). Where will their job be then? There will only be fear for judgment because those who don’t know Christ are headed for an eternal hell fire.

You are so right that ALL Christians will suffer and that is our calling. We are purified by fiery trials and refined, as you said, to gold which is more precious once it is refined. There are two indepth articles about suffering. One is Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People at: http://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/why-do-bad-things-happen-to-good-people/

The other one is about Job and his suffering at: http://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/job-bible-story-summary-with-lesson/

You wrote “I hear preachers say that if satan isn’t attacking you then that means he already has you.” This is not true. Satan can not be attacking many believers at the same time because he is a created being and can only be in one place at the same time. Only God is omnipresent (can be everywhere at the same time). And Satan can NOT have ANY Christians. That is not biblical. No believer can be demon possessed.

You also wrote, “I also hear the same preachers telling people to come to Jesus cause its a better life.” This is also untrue…Jesus said the way is hard, the road is difficult, the path is narrow….and we have to carry our cross daily and die to ourselves. Jesus promises eternal life, not a better life today. A believer will suffer perhaps more in this life than non-Christians but will have eternal joy someday in heaven.

When we are told to “rebuke Satan” and he will flee, this is to make him flee from tempting us to sin, not that he has power over us because God is all-powerful. Satan can not attack a Christian in the flesh but he can cause us problems (see the Job Bible story at the link above).

Christian will suffer….but they can also have peace because God will not allow anything more than we can endure but make a way of escape. He is critical of Christians but I bet he has never read the Bible so he doesn’t have any authority to say all Christians are not joyful. Thanks. Let us know if we can help more. Send your friend the links above to let him read about suffering because they are filled with Bible Scriptures. Thanks Juan.
