A year ago I had the opportunity to visit the set of Breakthrough. It was an amazing day from the moment I walked into the church, seeing all the movie equipment and people everywhere.

Better yet was meeting those behind the making of this movie and how they put 100% of themselves in telling the story about a mother’s love for her child and her Faith in God, who can do miracles.

The day was spent with tissues in hand as we talked with Joyce Smith about the day her son fell through the ice. She strongly believes that God had been preparing her for that day, months earlier she had been studying “Believing God” by Beth Moore. She had prayed all the way to the hospital with the belief that God was going to save her son. Bring on the tissues!

John Smith is your typical teenage young man, yet not so typical being how he is a walking, talking miracle. He has a maturity from this experience that mixes in with just wanting to be a teen. An amazing young man that was a joy to talk too. When asked about seeing his story on film and meeting the actor (Marcel Ruiz) who plays him, he was excited to know that people cared and wanted to be part of telling his story. He is very excited in spreading the word that “God is still alive and still in the miracle working business.”

During the set visit I was amazed watching one of the scenes play out..take after take. The director Roxann Dawson tweaking this and that with the extras and actors. Watching actor Topher Grace (Pastor Jason Noble) change up his lines mid stride during taping to make it better. All the actors were in their zone in portraying the “real” people in this film and after watching the screening of the movie several months ago, I can easily say they nailed it!

Cast: Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter, Marcel Ruiz, Sam Trammell and Dennis Haysbert

You may say to yourself be realistic with the situation here, cause it isn’t looking good (I know I did for a moment). But why shouldn’t we cry out to the Lord to save and strongly believe he will. God is bigger than we are and he can and will do miracles, if only we ask. Everyone has a purpose in life and this young man has his to show, that miracles do happen.

So make plans to see Breakthrough and don’t forget tissues, cause your going to need them!

SYNOPSIS

BREAKTHROUGH is based on the inspirational true story of one mother’s unfaltering love in the face of impossible odds. When Joyce Smith’s adopted son John falls through an icy Missouri lake, all hope seems lost. But as John lies lifeless, Joyce refuses to give up. Her steadfast belief inspires those around her to continue to pray for John’s recovery, even in the face of every case history and scientific prediction. From producer DeVon Franklin (Miracles from Heaven) and adapted for the screen by Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds) from Joyce Smith’s own book, BREAKTHROUGH is an enthralling reminder that faith and love can create a mountain of hope, and sometimes even a miracle.
