Who Created God? Is God Outside of Time?

by Jack Wellman · Print Print · Email Email

Who created God?  Is God outside of time?  Is God uncaused?  Since we know the universe is not eternal, how can an eternal Creator God exist?

Who Created God?

I have had unbelievers say that if the universe was created by God then who created God?  That is actually a great question and I don’t take it as an insult to my belief in God but actually as a question that rightly deserves an answer.  The laws of physics demand a cause for every effect or you could put it this way:  For every effect, there is a cause.  It seems ridiculous to believe that the universe created itself and so it also seems ludicrous to believe that God was created.  If this is so, then there must have been a creator behind the created God.  Then if such a creature created God, then that creature must have also been created.  Thus we are creating an infinite regression of causes and causers.  Some atheists, agnostics, and evolutionists believe that life on earth was brought to the planet by some alien force or object.  The object could have been – so they believe – been brought to earth by an asteroid.  But then the question becomes “Then where did this life come from” and on and on again, into infinity ad nauseum.  This only pushes the question of the origin of life back and back and back…

Who Created God

If some say that it was not God Who created man, but man who created God, then we must ask, then who created man?

If some say that it was not God Who created man, but man who created God, then we must ask, then who created man?  Can a created thing question the very One Who created it?  Can the clay vessel question the potter?  Isaiah 29:16 states, “You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pot say of the potter, “He knows nothing”?  Isaiah reiterates again, “But now, this is what the LORD says–he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine” (Isaiah 43:1). An analogy would be like our children believing that they created their parents – ludicrous at best. The question then becomes “Who created the uncreated one?”

Astrophysicists, astronomers, and physicists theorize that the universe had a beginning at a single, finite point in time and space.  If you rewound the universe backwards, which at present is expanding exponentially, it would go back to a singular point in time, space and matter.  What the state of the universe was before this starting point, which some say preceded the Big Bang, no one knows with certainty.  At best, mankind can only speculate or postulate because there is no way to know with absoluteness.

There is some speculation that the universe is eternal and that it constantly recycles itself over and over again which is called the Steady State Theory. The major problem with this is the Laws of Thermodynamics.  Think of it this way; energy is constantly being used up.  Just as you can not put light back into a light bulb, you can not put all the light and energy back into an electrical outlet once it is used up.  Once energy is used up, it’s not gone but it is transferred from one place into another.

How Can an Eternal Creator God Exist?

There is nothing written anywhere in the Bible that science has proven that could not have happened.  The beginning as far as humans are concerned is not Genesis chapter one but John chapter one.  This is truly a beginning for us but for God:  He has neither beginning nor no end.  The Gospel of John reads “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (v.1).  So before the universe or earth existed – and before humans existed – God was.  Before time, space and matter existed, God existed.  You can not have time without also having matter, for there is nothing with which we can measure it with.  There is not anything that existed but that God Himself caused as it says in John’s Gospel, “He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:1-2). The “He” is Jesus Christ and so the Trinity existed before earth did…before matter did and before mankind did.

Some thinkers believe – and without proof – that the universe is eternal but this doesn’t explain the origin of the universe or of matter.  If God were created, then something greater than the thing created must have existed beforehand.  A created thing is always lesser than that which created it.  What human mind can comprehend a self-existing God that has always been and will always be?  Our finite minds can not wrap itself around this.  That is why He is God and we are not.  A God that we can know completely would cease to be God and God can not be put into a box.  Just as a painting did not create itself, so a universe could not create itself because if it did, then there would have been something or someone before that to create it.  A self-created universe flies in the face of the laws of logic and physics.  A painting demands a painter just as a creation demands a Creator.

What one thing in the universe did not have a cause?  Everything known in the physical universe has a beginning and so everything known in the universe will have an end. A cause greater than itself had to exist prior to the universe’s existence and seeing the enormous size of the universe, the titanic amounts of energy being used and that is available and the perfect order of the universe, there must be intelligence behind the cause.  How can a Creator be also created?  It is a logically absurdity.

Is God Uncaused?

I believe that God is outside of time and space and existed before time and space did.  God says that He is omnipotent (all powerful), omniscient (all knowing), and omnipresent (everywhere at the same time).  Who could argue with that?  God thunders out His answer about Himself being the Creator and being called into question by mankind in Isaiah 45:9, “Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker, to him who is but a potsherd among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘He has no hands‘?”  Further, Romans 9:20 says, “But who are you, O man, to talk back to God? “ Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?‘”  Isaiah again says, “Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand” (Isaiah 64:8). We can safely assume that since we exist and the universe exists, then something before that must have existed since an effect demands a cause.  Without a preceding antecedent cause, nothing would exist. Nothing can not produce something.

Many point to Quantum Mechanics as a case in point for something coming from nothing, but the mechanics involved necessitate energy and these behaviors are macroscopic and only emerge at very low or very high energies.  These energies must have existed prior to their being in existence.  This theory states that some physical quantities can change only by discrete amounts but even the mechanics and physical quantities are material and did not come from nothingness.

Over 2,000 years ago Paul spoke of  “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible” (Heb 11:3).  This is what the Apostle John spoke about in saying, “He was with God in the beginning.  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made” (John 1:2-3). This can not be stated any more clearly that, “without Him nothing was made that has been made.”  That sums up all matter in the universe.  Since humans are composed of matter, then we are part of that which “has been made.”

Albert Einstein succinctly stated that, “There are only two ways that you can live.  One is as if nothing is a miracle. The other is as if everything is a miracle.   I believe in the latter”.  Mr. Einstein is right, “God does not play dice.”  The universe is no random accident. It was created with a purpose. We are part of that purpose and even the heavens declare the glory of God (Psalm 19:1).  “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse” (Rom 1:20). This was known before any microscopes or subatomic atoms were even known to exist.  The fact that matter at its smallest point of existence is invisible was known thousands of years before science knew about it.  These “invisible qualities” leave mankind with no excuse.  God does exist, He has always existed, He will always exist and there is nothing mankind can do to argue with it (Psalm 104).

Those who promote a faith in ‘multiverses’ don’t seem to care that they haven’t found a ‘first cause’ for those coming into existence either.

Jack February 23, 2012 at 2:34 pm

Thank you Jenny. What an excellent point. I feel that the many theories about an uncaused universe are simply a way of eliminating a need for a Creator and thus, God. Romans one and two, and many of the Psalms shows us that the universe declares the glory of God and that humans are without excuse.

This was an “awesome” piece, (awe of God, that is.) I truly enjoyed the read. The theory of God existing outside of time was first introduced to me by my ten year old son when we studied creation. Day four, God created sun, moon, and stars… “Oh, mom, that’s when God made time begin!”
It was great to read a well researched piece with this theme. I also loved the einstein quote.

Jack February 24, 2012 at 3:23 pm

Hello Tracey. Thank you so much. Your ten year old son has more logic and intelligence than do the many brilliant physicists and scientists do. As the Bible says, “Out of the mouth of babes thou has perfected thy praise.”

Truly the Psalmist and Paul (in Romans 1 & 2) are true: The heavens declare the glory of God and that they stand without excuse who deny a Creator for the creation. Please come back and visit again my friend.

Dagmar February 27, 2012 at 7:59 am

Truly appreciate the article.
Just wondering: How do you come to terms with the simple fact that God was not created and has always been there- mentally speaking? i must say, after reading your article, i am still struggling with that!
I would also love to place your article in our weekly newsletter, i will mention where i got it from and the name of the author—Only if that’s okay with you Sir.

Thanks again

Jack February 27, 2012 at 3:08 pm

Dagmar, thank you so much for visiting us and for your comment. I too struggle with the fact that God is the uncaused cause of all there is…but that may be the point. God is God because we can not get our minds around Him and figure Him out. He is infinite and we are finite. We are the created and He is the Creator. I struggle with that but then if we could figure God out, He would not be God. Does that make sense.

You may use this article in a newsletter that is printed or a PDF file that is emailed but you must give the author’s name and even if its an Internet newsletter, we ask that you put a link to the article which is from this site, like the link http://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/who-created-god-is-god-outside-of-time/ The author is Jack Wellman (me) and the website link is above. Thank you sir very much and we appreciate your asking.

Tracy Wykes May 5, 2012 at 7:54 am

This article is great!! Thankyou. I love what you said to Dagmar in the above comment reply – “God is God because we can not get our minds around Him and figure Him out. He is infinite and we are finite. We are the created and He is the Creator. I struggle with that but then if we could figure God out, He would not be God.” You can’t say it better than that!! 🙂

Jack May 5, 2012 at 1:42 pm

Thank you so much Mrs Wykes. I truly believe that our God is so awesome that I can not even explain Him and believe that even in eternity, since He is infinite, we will spend time without end and still not know Him fully but what a reason to worship Him and fall down before Him. Please come back again soon and thank you for your wonderfully encouraging comment.

David Essex May 13, 2012 at 5:53 pm

“Once energy is used up, it’s gone.”

The author clearly don’t understand the laws of thermodynamics. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it is merely transferred! Do your research next time.

God bless the baby Jesus.

Jack May 13, 2012 at 7:33 pm

Thank you David. You are correct sir and what was once a period became a comma and what should have been stated was that energy doesn’t disappear or dissipate but it moves from ordered forms of energy that can be used for lots of things into random, disordered energy. This would be much like dissipating light into the dark recesses of the universe from our sun. This light, which is energy, is pretty much useless the further it travels from its original source. Thank you for pointing out my mistake sir.

You are very intelligent. Thank you for this education on these subjects.

Jack Wellman June 25, 2012 at 2:28 pm

Thank you so much Vickie. I am not so intelligent but I do have an Intelligent Designer that I worship. Even so, I appreciate your kind words my friend. Please see our newest article on the main homepage called “What is the Cause of the Universe.”

Jack: It is much easier to come to terms with “forever”, than its inverse.Consider a grandfather clock (with its pendulum) as analogous to the clay vessel; obviously the vessel does not create the creator, but in terms of the clock (read:cosmos) what transpired before the pendulum was set in motion? I am a “student” of the architecture of the cosmos, and have come to terms with the order of it, and understand its basic premise of creation, destruction. and re-creation, at the same time understanding that was once, is necessary for the re-creation, later. BUT, regressing towards the inverse of infinity always seems to DEMAND a “1st born”, so-to-speak.Consider the parable of a gun type nuclear device such as “llittle boy”, the projectile is accelerated toward the mass of U235 creating the explosion; but where did the material to make the projectile come from, IF THE PROJECTILE ITSELF WAS A RESULT OF A PREVIOUS EXPLOSION?! Kind of like the chicken and the egg.

Ashley Autry October 28, 2012 at 5:24 am

Well said Jack! God would not be God if we knew how He was made….He would be man if we knew that piece of information. Thank you for that! Also, we cannot think of God with our simplistic view of time and space, cause and action. Our minds are made simpler than Gods because he made the time and space in which our mind RELATES ONLY to. Our mind will never have the understanding His has! And praise God for that!
-with Love

Wow! this is a really researched material, i had the same questions over and over again and now with different relevant references, i am always looking forward to read more pieces from this blog. Thank you so much.

Thank you Dee so much. I am glad you are visiting us in Kenya. May God bless you there and please come back soon.

Kayla November 28, 2012 at 11:54 am

I have two questions…

1. What’s the point in creating something if you already know how it’s going to play out? If God knows everything then He is already aware that He is going to defeat Satin. He knows who is going to join him in the end. He is supposed to be the almighty so why not just skip to end? But then with God there is no end. We are all just supposed to spend “forever” with a God that already knows what’s going to happen? Seems pointless.

2. Do you think God created life elsewhere way before our time and that’s where aliens and higher intelligent life forms come in?

Jack Wellman November 28, 2012 at 12:47 pm

Thank you Kayla. Great questions my friend. Why would He skip to the end and miss the opportunity for us to grow in grace and knowledge and sanctification takes a lifetime for the believer. Godly character takes time and events to develop and if we just “skipped to the end” how could we grow? Also, we are to be witnessing to the lost and God intends for us to share the gospel with others and so we can’t skip to the end and leave out others who might not hear the good news of Jesus Christ. It is not pointless to inherit eternal life and for those who are saved in this age, we will be kings and priests in the coming Kingdom to come which will be forever growing and we will be teaching others about God in the eternal Kingdom.

Whether God created life elsewhere, we don’t know. Bacteria is life and it may well be elsewhere in the universe but this doesn’t mean that it is created in the image of God, male and female (humans) to glorify God. Aliens and higher intelligent life forms aside, we don’t know but we do know that God exists and wants to save those who are on this earth right now. “What if’s” can not help us earn eternal life. Read Revelation 20 & 21 to see what God’s purpose and “end” for humans is.

Thank you Kayla. You posed some great questions. My question for you is are you sure you will go to heaven if you were to die and no one is guaranteed tomorrow (Rom 10:9-13, Acts 4:12)? That is the MOST important question there is.

Joshua January 5, 2013 at 7:07 am

I have read many of your posts now and I would just like to tell you that you are doing a great thing and I pray for you my friend. I love the fact that you are teaching others the way of Christianity and I also pray that anyone reading this will find Jesus and accept him as their savior and join god in heaven. Do it before its to late you never know what day on earth is your last god bless you all.

Jack Wellman January 5, 2013 at 11:35 am

Thank you Joshua. What an edifying comment. I also pray that the power that is in the Word (I have no power) makes effectual work in the person to bring them to see their need for a Savior and humbles them before the Mighty Hand of God to tremble at His Word. I am nothing, He is everything.

Steve January 19, 2013 at 3:22 am

Jack: A couple of years ago I read an article in a magazine whereby the author argued that unless he could be SHOWN that God does indeed exist, “He” does not. Wanting God to exist, or believing that God exists, seems to justify our individual existence whether one’s goal is to “get to Heaven”, or not. I am asking you, what event would have to happen to make believers out of those that don’t? Many religious folks don’t put much stock in science, as it is well known that many scientists are aetheists. But, on that DAY of “reckoning” they have the instruments (telescopes) to see for themselves, and when they look to the sky thereafter something will be missing, and they will have then no excuse not to believe!¡ It is hidden in scripture:
Mark 13:14-23, “the “fields”, “the rooftop”, are referring to Cassiopeia and Cepheus, and that which rises later in the evening, Andromeda, specifically M31, the great galaxy which is NOT where it appears to be (and Mr. Einstein would not understand why not). The great day of His wrath is at our doorstep; have patience, and then you WILL believe!¡ Keep up the good work and believe in the GOOD news, as I (do).

Jack Wellman January 19, 2013 at 11:10 am

Thank you so much Steve for your encouraging words. Let me say that the man that said “the author argued that unless he could be SHOWN that God does indeed exist, “He” does not” is offering a useless argument. The day that they can prove that He does NOT exist, then I will listen to him. The fact is that the atheist suppresses the truth as Paul said in Romans 1 & 2. The word used for “suppress” is like a spring being held down by force for they willingly suppress this truth for it is evident that God does exist.

The original and greatest scientific minds were ALL Christians. A simple search for the history of science will reveal that these men and women believed in God and that science is not really revealing new information because it was there all the time. They are discovering it for the first time. No one can convince a person that God exists for Jesus said to Peter that “flesh and blood did not reveal this to you (that Jesus is the Son of God) but My Father in heaven.” The Holy Spirit reveals to lost people Who God is and Who Jesus is. We can only pray that God would do this revealing to them. Ultimately, it is not our responsibility to have them believe in God. It is their response to HIS ability but it is our responsibility to tell them. Let the rest to God for “no one seeks after God” really. God, like the Prodigal Son’s Father, sought after him.

I put it this way in my own life:

He sought me, He caught me, He bought me, He taught me, what I ought be. Its not about me but all about Him.

Daniel April 11, 2013 at 12:30 pm

Our minds simply cannot conceive something that has no beginning. In human life, there is a start, middle & end. While we are still in this physical body there will be no way that we can fully embrace such a thought. Jack, I have made “atheists” admit that there is a God. No one that calls them self an atheist is truly an atheist. Where did all this material come from that put what they think in motion in motion? Did someone or something put it in motion? They reply yes, well then you just admitted to a Divine deity. It’s like talking with a child were you have to let them connect the dots for themselves vs just telling them to believe in God because He is there. In the end, no matter what science tries to explain, God created science!

Jack Wellman April 11, 2013 at 1:12 pm

Well said Daniel. The effect of the universe had to have a cause and without a cause, there could never have been any effect. Let me also thank you for caring enough to share the reality of the existence of God and that atheists may not believe in God but He knows that THEY exist.

I will contact you via your email as I have been working a tough schedule and I write, work for a foster care agency and also pastor a church so please don’t give up on me contacting you my friend. I thank God for you.

Daniel April 11, 2013 at 1:26 pm

Jack, no rush take care of those poor children in foster care. They need you more than I. You are an amazing man with a great heart and they have an immediate need for help! God bless you sir!

Jack Wellman April 11, 2013 at 1:38 pm

Thank you Daniel for your patience with me. I get so overextended at times and only have myself to blame, but I agree…these foster children have been thru more than some adults have in a lifetime. May God richly bless you and I thank you.

Lynyrd Villanueva April 20, 2013 at 8:25 am

As this article has proved its logical and reasonable point, athiests and evolutionists like Stephen Hawking and Richard Dawkins should kneel down before their creator. Mankind CANNOT argue with how the universe came into being. Their imperfect minds cannot and will not contradict the relationship of God with the origins of the universe.

Rayray May 4, 2013 at 6:45 pm

Brilliant 🙂 great site , please keep up the good work

Craig December 30, 2015 at 1:11 pm

Please consider revising this statement in your article: “A created thing is always lesser than that which was created.” Do you mean “A created thing is always lesser than that which created it.”?

Al Schoneman January 18, 2018 at 8:34 am

This excellent articles reminds me that those who attempt to explain God or subject him to the same physical laws that govern our lives are really setting themselves up for disappointment. God is God, there is no other. He appoints all things. We are the clay, he is the potter. I’m learning how to subject my wishes and desires to him after a 7 year long bout of employment/unemployment. He has a purpose to all things. Ours is to discover that purpose.

Jack Wellman January 18, 2018 at 11:20 am

Spot on Mr. Schoneman. Thank you sir.

Ebrown March 1, 2018 at 2:53 pm

When I first saw the title, I wanted to drop it but something within moved me to read through. I must confess your presentation is educative and soothing. God won’t be God if we know the way around Him. I would rather die believing in God than to live thinking He doesn’t exist and find out that He existed at all.
Jack, ,you’re doing a great job leading people to Christ and answering difficult question through the inspiration of God.
May God almighty bless you and reward yourself effort in Jesus name, amen.

Jack Wellman March 2, 2018 at 11:29 am

Thank you so kindly Ebrown for such encouragement. I appreciate that.

Dennis Riggs December 11, 2020 at 10:19 am

Hi Jack, I enjoyed your article. I delve a bit into Quantum Physics as a hobby. I also teach adult Bible study. I got the opportunity once to discuss the precedence set by science of God’s omnipresence by studying Quarks and how they can be in more than one place at a time. I also explained, very briefly, the string theory of vibrating strings being life’s building blocks. I explained how in essence, we are continuing to see the echo of God’s voice from the time of creation. All that to say is how Science proves God’s existence over and over and scientist continue to ignore their own observations.

Jack Wellman December 11, 2020 at 10:22 am

Thank you Mr. Riggs. Powerful work you are doing sir.

Joy November 24, 2021 at 11:36 pm

Is there a book about scripture that can be sent to someone in jail? I have a brother in jail for past 2 years that was tramatized by religion as a child but I so want him to know God’s word in a more loving way than from his childhood. He also identifies as transgender , any suggestions or a mailing list to the jail I can sign him up for ?? Thanks in advance . God bless you

Jack Wellman November 25, 2021 at 9:44 am

Hello Joy. I would contact the chaplain at the prison o jail. They usually can get material to them and you can also ship them books from the publisher or Amazon as long as it’s shrink-wrapped, they should allow them to have it.
