Does God Still Work Miracles Today?

by Jack Wellman · Print Print · Email Email

Does God still perform miracles today?  Are there still miraculous healings done in this age of the church?  Can we still expect miraculous healings that Jesus and the apostles performed in the New Testament?  What does the Bible say about miracles?

Theology vs. History

A major mistake that most people who read the Bible is that they read the book of Acts or the accounts of Jesus’ ministry in the New Testament and assume that these same miracles should still be occurring today.  Jesus raised people from the dead, caste out demons, and healed the sick.  So too did some of the apostles in the book of Acts.  Paul raised one young man from the dead.  Some were healed just by being in the shadow of a passing apostle.

There is a decided difference in the Bible that few people seem to disseminate.  That is there is a difference between theology and historical accounts.  If you read the gospels or the book of Acts, you read of the history of Jesus’ ministry and the history of the early church through the apostles.  There exists a difference between the gospels and the book of Acts and the letters in the New Testament of Paul, Peter, James, and the other general epistles.  The book of Acts and the gospels are historical accounts and are more concerned with recording events of Jesus’ ministry and the history of the early church.  Conversely, the general epistles are more concerned with theology.  You can not read of an account in the book of Acts and assume that is the theology and that the things recorded should be still occurring today in the church.

One example is that there have been no authenticated accounts in the modern day church where a man or woman of God has laid hands on a dead person and raised them to life.  And people who lie to church leaders die instantly like Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira did for lying to the Holy Spirit and Peter when they withheld part of the money they had given to the church for land they had sold.  Neither has anyone seen cloven tongues of fire over the heads of people who had received the Holy Spirit.  No churches at present have members speaking in languages other than their own languages like they did in the book of Acts.  These were one time occurrences that were used by God to establish the authenticity of the New Testament church.  To use historical accounts of the gospels and the book of Acts is to misapply the intent of these books.

Healings Still Occur

There are literally hundreds of accounts of miraculous healings today among countless Christians but these are at the discretion of God alone.  God miraculously heals some while choosing not to heal others for His divine purpose.  No one would accuse the apostle Paul of having a weak faith, yet God refused to heal him after he asked three times.  In God’s higher wisdom, He knows who and what to heal and what is best for the believer in choosing not to heal someone.  Yes, miracles still happen, but they are not at the direction or discretion of believers but a decision of God alone.  He does heal through petitions of prayers but there are times when His answer is no because He has a higher purpose in mind. Our sufferings and afflictions work out a purpose that we may not be able to understand at this time (Romans 8).

Miracles Still Happen

God is still in the business of miracles.  I believe that the greatest miracle of all is that of converting a blind sinner to see their sin and to change the human heart; from one of serving the god of this world to seeing their own sin and the need of a Savior in Jesus Christ.  The miracle of human conversion is actually greater than any healing miracle because this brings eternal life in Christ.  A healing miracle is only temporary.  The person healed will eventually die but the one that is born-again has inherent eternal life that can never be lost and that person can live with God for eternity, never to die again (John 3:16).

Those who call themselves or are called by others as “faith healers” are not biblical in any sense.  For one thing, God is the one who chooses to heal a person.  Supposed faith healers have a win-win situation.  If they “heal” a person, then they get the credit because they laid hands on them.  If they are not able to heal someone, they usually say that the person lacked faith in God.  Jesus never, ever failed to heal even one person on account of their lack of faith.  Neither did any of the apostles neglect to have someone healed due to the person’s lack of faith in God.  Those faith healers who attribute the inability of someone to be healed on their lack of faith ignore biblical theology.  Faith is a gift of God and it is the faith that comes from God alone, freely, and not of our own selves.  He might use the prayers of believers but He nowhere says in the general epistles in the New Testament that healing will always occur.

Faith healers have been exposed as charlatans, some have their own “sick and infirmed” that they supposedly heal but many of these are the same people are known and used repeatedly by the fake faith healers.  If a person comes to them that they do not know and they are not healed, then they can shatter this persons faith in themselves and can cause them to fall away from the faith in God on account of God’s inability to heal them.  Faith healers have done more harm than good.  True healing is a healing of a sinner’s heart; through repentance, brokenness, and a need for a Savior by realizing their own sinfulness.

Receive Your Own Miracle

If you are a born-again believer, then you have received the greatest miracle that any human could ever experience.  It is a miracle in the sense that you were once an enemy of God, was blind but now can see, and were separated from God by your sin.  Jesus took on God’s wrath in your place.  God sent the Holy Spirit to reveal Who Jesus is.  He turned the heart of stone into a heart of flesh.  You now have eternal life and can never, ever be lost (John 10:28-29).   The fact is that this is the greatest miracle of all and one that supersedes all of the miracles of healing or being raised from the dead that have ever been written in the Bible.

Miracles were performed as proof of divinity or proof that the messenger was from God. This was before the Bible was completed mind. Today, there are NO miracles being performed in the World. Anyone who claims to have seen one has been deceived or mis-interpreted what occurred. Anyone who claims to be able to perform miracles is certainly a deceiver.

We have the Holy Spirit, the comforter. This and the Bible are what we have to go on as we wait for Christ’s return. These things are the catalyst for changing a person’s heart. A sinner coming to Christ is not a miracle.

No one can perform miracles, speak in tongues (which isn’t gibberish as Pentecostals would have you believe, but actual known languages) or prophecy any longer.

Bryan February 24, 2016 at 10:19 am

Some folks say Jesus Christ did miracles to prove His divinity. I do not say He did not, but I say that Jesus Christ did miracles because He could not help Himself. He could not help Himself. It was His very nature to do so. When He was in the presence of the sick ones, He healed them all. He did not do it to establish His divinity, but because it was just like Him to do it. It would not have been like Him if He had not. Well, if He healed folks in those days it is logical that He does it now, because His nature has not changed. He cannot help manifesting His nature.

What about Luke 10 when He commissioned 70 others to go out and heal the sick and tell them the kingdom of God has come near to you? The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

What about Mark 16 when He said, ” These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Are you a believer?

Thanks Bryan. You enlivened me in my sickbed by your comment, and made me feel the cup is half full and not half empty.

I have to respect fully disagree with a gentle who claims God does not perform miracles. There are no scriptures that say miracles are Not performed by God today, none.

With that stated, I have a miracle I will post now. First, I grew up on a farm, worked with mechanical machinery. I have an Electronics Engineering Technology degree; have worked in the lab for a number of years, and designed some sophisticated components.

Anyway, fall 1974, I was some 300 miles from a college and needed to be there that day, and was short on cash. My 1960 ford galaxy, just traded for, would not start, no power, so I got it jumped and the car started.

About 30 minutes later I stopped and purchased fuel. The starter motor solenoid would not click, the lights did not light. I attempted several times to start, but no power at all.

1) I “toggled” the ignition switch to the “off” position, not “acc” nor “on” position.
2) The lights did not work, so No power.

So I have two conditions that would prevent the starter motor from working. I prayed to the Father and finished in Jesus’s name, and said amen, I heard a noise and checked the engine again. The engine had started spinning like crazy.

After a short astonishment, I reached inside and “toggled” the ignition switch to “on” and the engine powered up. There was no starter motor grinding due to gear mesh, so the solenoid was not engaged. (The alternatior would supply power to the ignition circuitry while spinning and it was morning, so no need for any lights.)

I then proceeded to college, left the engine running while checking in, and later sold the car for $70.00.

Hello Steve and thank you sir for your comment. No one has said that miracles have stopped and God doesn’t do them anymore. He can, but we can find Scripture that say “God doesn’t work miracles today” any more than we can find one that says “God doesn’t work miracles today.” God does what He wills and can do any miracle at any time.

steve March 7, 2019 at 9:12 pm

My point was directed to Benjamn; sorry if you thought directed to you Mr. Wellman.

My point to Benjamin is that miracles are occurring, many times in my life.

Lion January 26, 2017 at 9:50 am

Steve – What you reported is not a miracle. Maybe a poor understanding of what occurred, maybe an anomaly but not a miracle. A miracle in this context is a suspension of natural law, whereas the occurrence of a event could not be explained naturally , i.e. splitting the read sea, raising someone from the dead after three days or reattaching someones ear. Those are miracles. This is what is not seen these days. 7 billion people on earth and millions of cameras to document. Nowadays you only hear of miracles occurring in third world countries in some back woods somewhere like God is shy, or even camera shy. There are no miracles. The author of this article may be able to quote scripture well but give account one modern day miracle? no! Not one! I think its time we stop fooling ourselves. Just so you know, I believe in God and that by the very definition he is omnipotent – therefore he CAN perform miracles. But I am a realist… 7 billion people – not one account!

steve March 7, 2019 at 10:08 pm

Lion, it is obvious you don’t have a clue about the subject, or natural laws. It is interesting that satan is described as a “roaring lion”.

I am an electronics engineer and am quite knowledgeable of natural laws. For instance, with a dead battery, there will be no lights, no ignition, no radio, no solenoid, no starter motor working. This is according to Kirchoff and Norton Laws etc etc.

Besides the dead battery, the ignition switch was in the “off” position, so two conditions that would prevent the starter from working and the motor from turning over.

Since natural scientific laws have been broken, a miracle has been performed. I suggest you actually understand the subject before sticking both feet in your mouth.

Enough said.

I am now 72 years old and ran a small company in the mid west . I have been a Christian all my life and have always held GOD,JESUS CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT sacred and don’t appreciate jokes or anything irreverent concerning them and my family also. On June 2 nd 2015 I was sitting in my office when the phone rang. It was my 12 year old grandson telling me someone was knocking on the door then left the door but did not leave the property. They live on a steep hill with the driveway dug into the side of the hill making only the car’s roof visible .his mom and dad left for a few minutes and he wanted to stay home. I told him I would be there in 10/15 minutes or as fast as I possibly could. He then said he would call his dad as I was on the way. He called me back and said his dad told him it was probably the exterminator.I told him I will be there in a few minutes anyway. As I pulled up the hill to the car it was the exterminator’ car parked in the driveway. I couldn’t park my car on the top of the hill as his car was in the middle of the driveway and not enough room to pull alongside his car.I was relieved and got out of my car ,which is a stick shift Jeep, stood in plain sight so my grandson could see me ans started to talk to the exterminator on how to control stink bugs which kept getting into my house. My grandson saw me and came out of the house standing within20 feet of myself and the exterminator and about5 feet higher than we were looking down on us.As we were talking my grandson yelled gramps the jeep ! I turned around and the jeep was rolling down the hill !!! At the bottom of the 100 ft. Plus driveway was a busy road and the driveway had trees on both sides and all I could think of is the jeep rolling into the busy road and someone getting badly hurt,so I ran after the jeep catching it 40 or so feet down the hill. As the jeep was rolling backwards I got the door opened and grabbed the steering wheel to jump in. The problem was as I grapped the steering wheel I jerked it causing a severe turn and the only thing I saw was a TIRE TREAD ! Yes a tire tread in my face and it never moved!! The next think I knew was the tire was gone and the exterminator came screaming at me ,as I lay on the ground, your jeep just ran over you are you ok ??? Obviously I knew nothing of the jeep running over me and figured I must be in shock!! He kept screaming at me “your jeep just ran over you are you alright ” . I felt fine and Kept waiting to feel some kind of pain!, No pain so I decided to try and stand and did feeling great! The jeep made a sharp turn stopping on some landscaping trees and rocks and did not go into the road !! I RAN down to the jeep to look at the damage when the exterminator gave me a card with his home phone eying “Your jeep just ran over you” !he then said your grandson was watching the whole thing ask him! I did ask him and was told he saw the jeep run right through my head ,thus the tire tread in my face !! No Joke or Prank as GOD is my witness and I bur n in Hell if this isn’t 100 0/0 true ! A miracle above anything . I didn’t have a scratch or sore spot on my body and felt like I just took a nap ! GOD is so real and everywhere!!!!

Rohl Mayers September 20, 2017 at 2:29 am

God is still in the healing business, he is the same yesterday and today and forever he changes not glory to his name. I am a believer in Christ and come to realize we can all criticize or share a different opinion that’s everyone right but we should not speak against things we do not understand for today you hold too one opinion and tomorrow it changes just like cercumstances changes your situation. What you did not believe today you believe tomorrow because of your experiences.
I personally believe in miracles not because I have seen many in my lifetime but because I believe what the bible says look at Mark 16:17,18 And these signs shall follow them that believe in my name they shall cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues
18 They shall take up take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing,it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.
Firstly Jesus is speaking not Peter not Paul not Moses or Abraham
He said everything he sees the Father doing he does what ever he said is what God gave him so these scripture verses there was no time limit or expire date. I can understand how the majority of people don’t believe especially Christians because the scriptures tells us his very apostles did not believe him and you can read Mark 16:14 it’s all there.
Remember not everyone is at the same level or have the same purpose, firstly the scriptures said to them that believe so if you don’t believe you cannot cast out devils, speak in new tongues, heal the sick etc that’s promises that was given based on a condition providing you believe so we should bring down others who don’t believe perhaps later they may believe and operate in the authority that Christ Jesus gave his body.
Demons are very real today I myself operates in a deliverance ministry and encountered many demon possessions, I also speak in other tongues, and I know there are different types of tongues , some are known languages others are not some can be translated others interpreted some are just between you and God. You may call it babbling others groaning some say foolishness or even stupidity but what if it’s the Spirit of God in operation do you know so if we don’t no we shouldn’t speak against it let God be the judge, some people who prophecy first get the word in tongues, and after it’s interpreted so with that said should we argue with God we all known that will not make sense.
In conclusion if one speaks in tongues, cast out devils, heal the sick, works miracles, prophecy don’t condemn them incourage them and for the ones who don’t believe in such things we the ones who believe should no condemn them likewise we are still part of the same body of Christ what about if we let love prevail for these discrepancies has no bearing on your salvation.

Jack Wellman September 20, 2017 at 11:09 am

Hello Rohl. Much of what you say is true, but speaking in tongues is not evidence of being filled with the Spirit or having faith and deliverance ministries are not biblical. There is not one verse that shows someone has a ministry that is dedicated to deliverance. I urge you to read this my friend to see if you can find error in some of what you wrote. As you said, some of us are further along while others are not. I think it’s unfair to say it in such a way that Richard is not as far along as you. Please read this:

John2 February 6, 2020 at 5:42 am

In scripture, every account of anyone receiving the Holy Spirit, it was evidenced by speaking in an unknown tongue.
What logic then says that it is not the evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit.

Jack Wellman February 6, 2020 at 8:38 am

You are so wrong sir. No, that is not true, besides the word “unknown” in unknown tongue is not in the original manuscripts. A simple study Bible will show you your error and many believe this lie, but there is no such thing as an unknown tongue, and the word “tongue” means langauge, so get to studying my friend. Most have seen this by now but you need to study it more and find a better tranlsation.

I still believe that GOD still is performing miracles in this age. My wife and I were already in our mid forty’s when we decided to have a baby. After three miscarriages the doctor told us that my wife would no longer be able to conceive a child again. My wife was heart broken and I was mad. I was mad cause I couldn’t accept the doctor’s decision. I told my wife who does he think he is? Only GOD can decide our fate. My wife conceived again and felt scared and worried about losing the baby. I assured her that GOD was in full control of our situation. We prayed and trusted GOD through the pregnancy. My daughter had the most perfect pregnancy without any medical issues. I remember praying over my wife’s womb every day through her nine months of pregnancy. GOD blessed with a beautiful healthy baby girl after her birth I confronted our doctor and reminded him that what was impossible for man is not impossible to GOD. All the glory and honor to our Lord and savior Jesus Christ! Amen…

Emily March 14, 2018 at 12:08 pm

‘Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever’, and if he is the same, then the Holy Spirit is also the same.

God is still performing miracles. And when we pray for people to be healed and set free from demons, IN THE NAME OF JESUS, they CAN be healed, because of Jesus.

He gave us the authority to go out into the world and reach the lost! To save people from their sin and bring them to repentance.

I have seen many miracles performed in the name of Jesus. And you know what, they’re not going to stop happening. This is the great commission!! Read Luke 10. Read about what Jesus has asked us to do with our lives!

Why do you think God has placed us on this earth?… To not bring healing and deliverance to people who need it desperately, and who he longs to see healed and set free?!! Come on! This is how a person of peace can encounter the power and love of Jesus!

I encourage anyone reading this to pray and ask God to show them the truth. He is the only, true authority.

Jack Wellman March 15, 2018 at 10:35 am

Why did God place us on earth? The Bible says not to do miracles but to glorify God and be HIs witnesses to all the world. You focus on miracles and God is still doing them today, but your focus should be on what Jesus tells us to do and that is to witness and glorify God. Focus on the fruits of the Spirit and not the gifts. Jesus said you will know them by your fruits….not gifts! Please study this more to see that is so. Jesus said and evil generation seeks after signs.

Nathan March 14, 2018 at 12:10 pm

This article doesn’t take into account what Jesus commanded his disciples in the Bible. Nor does it take into account the many miracles that ARE happening today at the hands of disciples. Personally I have seen pain leave, uneven legs grow out, limps stop, and more, though the power of Jesus’ name. But you’ll never see it if you don’t believe.

Jack Wellman March 15, 2018 at 10:32 am

Hello Nathan. God is still doing miracles today. I have never said He doesn’t, and by the way, if you have seen “uneven legs grow out, limps stop, and more” please send us some evidence. If you’ve seen this, others must have too, so let them testify to this and you should be able to provide physical evidence of these “limbs” growing, etc. Show us the proof.

Gilbert June 11, 2018 at 8:57 am

I agree that God no longer performs miracles today and no longer heals the sick. I’ve seen it many times, people I’ve known who fall very ill, some old, some young, and even though genuine believers pray, fast and plea, the result is ultimately due to medical science. I really come to dislike when people attribute everything and anything to God when it’s good and to satan when bad.
I had a major surgical procedure to remove a malignant tumor in my colon, basically colon cancer, stage 3. The surgeon was one of the best in the city and did a great job. I followed up with 6 session of chemotherapy and been in remission for two years now. Many were happy and gave thanks to God for my recovery, said God used the doctor to remove the cancer and faith healed me. I will say that when you are in that situation, faith is important as it helps you mentally to get through the process and gives you a sense of hope for a better future.
On the flip side, I’ve seen people die from cancer who were believers and despite all the prayers still passed away. I’m alive thanks to a good team of doctors, medical science and also my genetic make up. I don’t know if the cancer will return but for now I’m doing what I can to improve my chances of survival and if it does return then what will I say, that God did not heal me after all? Of course not, I will say that it just returned and I will have to fight it once more.
I have tons of medical bills and greatly in debt, I’m currently looking for another job that will pay more, this is the side that many Christians don’t want to see.
Medical care is expensive in this country and if God had really healed me then no doctor would have been necessary, the tumor would have just disappeared overnight, I would not be in the situation I am now.
It is up to me to move forward, up to me to make things happen, we are the architects of our own destiny to a certain point. Yes, God helps some but ultimately it is up to us to make wise choices early in life because they will affect our future.
I also have a sister who claims to speak in tongues, she will break out saying things when under a lot of stress but nobody knows what she is saying and it does nobody good, not even her, nothing changes for the better when this happens. I don’t see any benefit or edification from people who say they speak in tongues.
Maybe I’m spiritually dead but after many years of hoping for the best and so many bad experiences because I was too naive and always wanted to believe people are generally good, I no longer hold on to faith as a way out of my problems.

Jack Wellman June 11, 2018 at 9:59 am

God is still doing miracles today. I never wrote that He no longer does miracles, but God does miracles when it is His will, and if we are more concerned about ourselves than the lost or obeying Christ, and seeking Him first (Matt 6:33), then our faith is in the miracles and healings and not in Christ.

Jo Chute June 26, 2018 at 8:23 am

I thank you for explaining what and how miracles occur today and I also believe the greatest is what Jesus did for us and becoming Born again. Thank you a great lesson learned in how to tell others when God may put someone in my journey and ask about miracles and know I feel comfortable in saying the right things and Yes the discretion is up to God and He is in control. JC

glenn jedlicka July 7, 2018 at 9:37 pm

I believe you half answered the question ……evidence of healings by the 100s each and yet cessationists still disbelieve……..leaders of churches leading other Christians into a life of cessationism ……this is not good an example of this is RC Sproul handing over the baton to Dr. burke parsons —-another cessationist ………this is not good —christians depending on doctors instead of Christ….this is not good By the way, Christians if they broke a bone would surely need to see a doctor, right?

Jack Wellman July 8, 2018 at 8:30 am

God can and still does miracles but these men, the late Dr. R.C. Sproul and Dr. Burke are rock-solid theologians and teachers and what they do is good. To label people as cessasationists is not good. Miracles are still happening and they acknowledged that, so you are being very hard on them and other churches. I checked your youtube video and its not good to post it here because I see some very serious issues and attacking of others, so it wasn’t allowed, but thank you for your comment Mr. Jedlicka.

Donald Fry January 30, 2019 at 8:30 am

This article states “Jesus never failed to heal someone due to lack of faith.” Yet in Matthew 58 it says: “And He did not do many miracles there, because of their unbelief 13:58 ” Hmm.
Saying there is no documented proof of miracles sounds similar to the atheist statement that their is no proof of creation. There actually is evidence, but there cannot be adequate evidence for someone who has closed their mind to possible evidence. I personally have been present for miracles. I find dispensation theology is at best troubling. It seems dangerously close to violating 2 Tim. 3:5,

Jack Wellman January 30, 2019 at 8:57 am

Hello Mr. Fry. I never wrote anything close to what you said I wrote, in fact, you quote me as saying, ““Jesus never failed to heal someone due to lack of faith,” but this statement is not in this article so you are putting words in my mouth that are not there and that is bearing false witness, so rather than accuse me of violating 2 Tim3:5 or getting close to doing so, please make sure you are not falsifyning statements, which you have done to me. I find your false accusations trouble, too, at best! Before you accuse others of something, make sure you have proof, and in this case, you have none. I pray you do not do this to others you know.

Joy H. September 3, 2019 at 3:26 am

This article is inaccurate. Just because one person doesn’t witness a miracle doesn’t mean many others have and are still witnessing & performing miracles. I’ve witnessed many miracles, God has used me to lay hands on the sick and raise the dead. To ask someone “to prove that a miracle happened” is dangerously similar to the skepticism & unbelieving attitude of the Pharisees in Jesus’ day.

But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.
Matt 12:39

One should never has to make a distinction between theology & historical accounts, as this article suggests. Sometimes we can get so technical (as this article does) that we completely miss God. God is not that complicated.

Jack Wellman September 3, 2019 at 8:47 am

No one said, including me, that miracles still do not exist and that God still not does them so you are actually one one that is wrong. You are also are incorrect in your judgment of me so you need to prove this because even Satan has his own ministers and can work miracles so be careful that yoiu are not doing work for Satan or you are lying about raising the dead. You are in serious jeopardy if you do not repent of this lying and falsehood.

Gordon June 4, 2021 at 2:06 pm

What makes you think the HS is still a comforter today? Or a guide?
The fact is, we have no reason to believe that the HS does anything that can be distinguished from psychological motivation. If the Spirit were truly needed, the Bible could not be truly sufficient, and scripture would not have true clarity for everything needed for faith or works.
You can’t just pick and choose which things the Spirit stopped doing and which ones continue. The fact of the matter is what after the apostles’s last recipients of the gifts died, the Spirit has returned to heaven.

Saying that the Spirit still operates between believers today is saying that the Spirit’s operation is just as much a spectacular failure as the rest of the Church’s History unto today. The fact that the Church became melded with the Empire is proof positive that the Church has fallen from divine grace into temporal power.

What evidence is there that the Spirit does anything today, that the Bible doesn’t?

Pastor Jack Wellman June 4, 2021 at 3:33 pm

If you do not have the Holy Spirit Gordon, you are not saved! We neither pick nor choose what the Spirit works in us and in others. Scripture speaks for it self. Your and my opinion are worthless compared to the truth of God’s Word and the New Testament details a close relationship between the Holy Spirit and Jesus during his earthly life and ministry. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke and the Nicene Creed state that Jesus was “conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary”. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove during his baptism, and in his Farewell Discourse after the Last Supper Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to his disciples after His departure.

We believe that the Holy Spirit is co-equal with God the Father and God the Son and is of the same essence. Yet He is also distinct from them.

Scripture describes the Holy Spirit in personal terms, not as an impersonal force, when it says that He teaches, guides, comforts and intercedes. He possesses emotions, intellect and will. The Holy Spirit spoke to Philip and gave counsel to the church at Jerusalem. He was sinned against and lied to.

The Scriptures also attest to the deity of the Holy Spirit. He is spoken of as God and is identified with the title of Jehovah. The Christian who is indwelt by the Spirit is indwelt by God. The Holy Spirit possesses the attributes of deity, such as omniscience, omnipresence, omnipotence and eternality. He does works only God can do, such as creating, regenerating and sanctifying.8 He is equally associated with the other members of the Trinity.

The work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament differed somewhat from His work in the New Testament. The possession of the Holy Spirit by the believer was not permanent in every case. The Spirit had a ministry of restraining sin and in the creation of the world.

The Holy Spirit today plays a major role in the application of salvation to the individual. It is the Spirit who brings conviction to the unbeliever and causes him to see the truth of the gospel in a clear light. Those who respond to this conviction and place their faith in Jesus Christ receive eternal life and a new nature. The Holy Spirit unites the believer with Christ and places him in the body of Christ, the church. He also unites the believer with Christ in His death, enabling him to live victoriously over sin. The Holy Spirit controls the believer who yields to God and submits himself to God’s Word. When these conditions are met, the believer lives in the power of the Spirit and produces the fruit of the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit indwells the believer permanently. While the child of God may sin and grieve the Spirit, the Spirit will never leave the true believer. Absence of the Holy Spirit is the mark of the unsaved. The Holy Spirit seals the believer. This ministry guarantees the security of the believer “until the day of redemption.”

The Holy Spirit sovereignly bestows spiritual gifts or abilities for service to every believer. Although His restraint of evil in the world today will cease with the rapture, He will continue to be present in the earth. In the tribulation period the Spirit will be involved in salvation and filling.25 In the coming kingdom of Jesus Christ, the Spirit will be in God’s people and the Spirit will be upon the King.

The Holy Spirit is referred to as “the Lord.” The Holy Spirit is still working in believers…if not, that are not really believers. Read Rom 8. Since you are apparently a novice in the Word of God, please buy yourself a good study Bible and that will help you see that the Spirit was, is and is to come to be working in those who trust in Christ. So it is written.
