Does God Still Work Miracles Today?

by Jack Wellman · Print Print · Email Email

Does God still perform miracles today?  Are there still miraculous healings done in this age of the church?  Can we still expect miraculous healings that Jesus and the apostles performed in the New Testament?  What does the Bible say about miracles?

Theology vs. History

A major mistake that most people who read the Bible is that they read the book of Acts or the accounts of Jesus’ ministry in the New Testament and assume that these same miracles should still be occurring today.  Jesus raised people from the dead, caste out demons, and healed the sick.  So too did some of the apostles in the book of Acts.  Paul raised one young man from the dead.  Some were healed just by being in the shadow of a passing apostle.

There is a decided difference in the Bible that few people seem to disseminate.  That is there is a difference between theology and historical accounts.  If you read the gospels or the book of Acts, you read of the history of Jesus’ ministry and the history of the early church through the apostles.  There exists a difference between the gospels and the book of Acts and the letters in the New Testament of Paul, Peter, James, and the other general epistles.  The book of Acts and the gospels are historical accounts and are more concerned with recording events of Jesus’ ministry and the history of the early church.  Conversely, the general epistles are more concerned with theology.  You can not read of an account in the book of Acts and assume that is the theology and that the things recorded should be still occurring today in the church.

One example is that there have been no authenticated accounts in the modern day church where a man or woman of God has laid hands on a dead person and raised them to life.  And people who lie to church leaders die instantly like Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira did for lying to the Holy Spirit and Peter when they withheld part of the money they had given to the church for land they had sold.  Neither has anyone seen cloven tongues of fire over the heads of people who had received the Holy Spirit.  No churches at present have members speaking in languages other than their own languages like they did in the book of Acts.  These were one time occurrences that were used by God to establish the authenticity of the New Testament church.  To use historical accounts of the gospels and the book of Acts is to misapply the intent of these books.

Healings Still Occur

There are literally hundreds of accounts of miraculous healings today among countless Christians but these are at the discretion of God alone.  God miraculously heals some while choosing not to heal others for His divine purpose.  No one would accuse the apostle Paul of having a weak faith, yet God refused to heal him after he asked three times.  In God’s higher wisdom, He knows who and what to heal and what is best for the believer in choosing not to heal someone.  Yes, miracles still happen, but they are not at the direction or discretion of believers but a decision of God alone.  He does heal through petitions of prayers but there are times when His answer is no because He has a higher purpose in mind. Our sufferings and afflictions work out a purpose that we may not be able to understand at this time (Romans 8).

Miracles Still Happen

God is still in the business of miracles.  I believe that the greatest miracle of all is that of converting a blind sinner to see their sin and to change the human heart; from one of serving the god of this world to seeing their own sin and the need of a Savior in Jesus Christ.  The miracle of human conversion is actually greater than any healing miracle because this brings eternal life in Christ.  A healing miracle is only temporary.  The person healed will eventually die but the one that is born-again has inherent eternal life that can never be lost and that person can live with God for eternity, never to die again (John 3:16).

Those who call themselves or are called by others as “faith healers” are not biblical in any sense.  For one thing, God is the one who chooses to heal a person.  Supposed faith healers have a win-win situation.  If they “heal” a person, then they get the credit because they laid hands on them.  If they are not able to heal someone, they usually say that the person lacked faith in God.  Jesus never, ever failed to heal even one person on account of their lack of faith.  Neither did any of the apostles neglect to have someone healed due to the person’s lack of faith in God.  Those faith healers who attribute the inability of someone to be healed on their lack of faith ignore biblical theology.  Faith is a gift of God and it is the faith that comes from God alone, freely, and not of our own selves.  He might use the prayers of believers but He nowhere says in the general epistles in the New Testament that healing will always occur.

Faith healers have been exposed as charlatans, some have their own “sick and infirmed” that they supposedly heal but many of these are the same people are known and used repeatedly by the fake faith healers.  If a person comes to them that they do not know and they are not healed, then they can shatter this persons faith in themselves and can cause them to fall away from the faith in God on account of God’s inability to heal them.  Faith healers have done more harm than good.  True healing is a healing of a sinner’s heart; through repentance, brokenness, and a need for a Savior by realizing their own sinfulness.

Receive Your Own Miracle

If you are a born-again believer, then you have received the greatest miracle that any human could ever experience.  It is a miracle in the sense that you were once an enemy of God, was blind but now can see, and were separated from God by your sin.  Jesus took on God’s wrath in your place.  God sent the Holy Spirit to reveal Who Jesus is.  He turned the heart of stone into a heart of flesh.  You now have eternal life and can never, ever be lost (John 10:28-29).   The fact is that this is the greatest miracle of all and one that supersedes all of the miracles of healing or being raised from the dead that have ever been written in the Bible.

Miracles were performed as proof of divinity or proof that the messenger was from God. This was before the Bible was completed mind. Today, there are NO miracles being performed in the World. Anyone who claims to have seen one has been deceived or mis-interpreted what occurred. Anyone who claims to be able to perform miracles is certainly a deceiver.

We have the Holy Spirit, the comforter. This and the Bible are what we have to go on as we wait for Christ’s return. These things are the catalyst for changing a person’s heart. A sinner coming to Christ is not a miracle.

No one can perform miracles, speak in tongues (which isn’t gibberish as Pentecostals would have you believe, but actual known languages) or prophecy any longer.

Some folks say Jesus Christ did miracles to prove His divinity. I do not say He did not, but I say that Jesus Christ did miracles because He could not help Himself. He could not help Himself. It was His very nature to do so. When He was in the presence of the sick ones, He healed them all. He did not do it to establish His divinity, but because it was just like Him to do it. It would not have been like Him if He had not. Well, if He healed folks in those days it is logical that He does it now, because His nature has not changed. He cannot help manifesting His nature.

What about Luke 10 when He commissioned 70 others to go out and heal the sick and tell them the kingdom of God has come near to you? The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

What about Mark 16 when He said, ” These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Are you a believer?

I have to respect fully disagree with a gentle who claims God does not perform miracles. There are no scriptures that say miracles are Not performed by God today, none.

With that stated, I have a miracle I will post now. First, I grew up on a farm, worked with mechanical machinery. I have an Electronics Engineering Technology degree; have worked in the lab for a number of years, and designed some sophisticated components.

Anyway, fall 1974, I was some 300 miles from a college and needed to be there that day, and was short on cash. My 1960 ford galaxy, just traded for, would not start, no power, so I got it jumped and the car started.

About 30 minutes later I stopped and purchased fuel. The starter motor solenoid would not click, the lights did not light. I attempted several times to start, but no power at all.

1) I “toggled” the ignition switch to the “off” position, not “acc” nor “on” position.
2) The lights did not work, so No power.

So I have two conditions that would prevent the starter motor from working. I prayed to the Father and finished in Jesus’s name, and said amen, I heard a noise and checked the engine again. The engine had started spinning like crazy.

After a short astonishment, I reached inside and “toggled” the ignition switch to “on” and the engine powered up. There was no starter motor grinding due to gear mesh, so the solenoid was not engaged. (The alternatior would supply power to the ignition circuitry while spinning and it was morning, so no need for any lights.)

I then proceeded to college, left the engine running while checking in, and later sold the car for $70.00.

Hello Steve and thank you sir for your comment. No one has said that miracles have stopped and God doesn’t do them anymore. He can, but we can find Scripture that say “God doesn’t work miracles today” any more than we can find one that says “God doesn’t work miracles today.” God does what He wills and can do any miracle at any time.

Steve – What you reported is not a miracle. Maybe a poor understanding of what occurred, maybe an anomaly but not a miracle. A miracle in this context is a suspension of natural law, whereas the occurrence of a event could not be explained naturally , i.e. splitting the read sea, raising someone from the dead after three days or reattaching someones ear. Those are miracles. This is what is not seen these days. 7 billion people on earth and millions of cameras to document. Nowadays you only hear of miracles occurring in third world countries in some back woods somewhere like God is shy, or even camera shy. There are no miracles. The author of this article may be able to quote scripture well but give account one modern day miracle? no! Not one! I think its time we stop fooling ourselves. Just so you know, I believe in God and that by the very definition he is omnipotent – therefore he CAN perform miracles. But I am a realist… 7 billion people – not one account!

I am now 72 years old and ran a small company in the mid west . I have been a Christian all my life and have always held GOD,JESUS CHRIST AND THE HOLY SPIRIT sacred and don’t appreciate jokes or anything irreverent concerning them and my family also. On June 2 nd 2015 I was sitting in my office when the phone rang. It was my 12 year old grandson telling me someone was knocking on the door then left the door but did not leave the property. They live on a steep hill with the driveway dug into the side of the hill making only the car’s roof visible .his mom and dad left for a few minutes and he wanted to stay home. I told him I would be there in 10/15 minutes or as fast as I possibly could. He then said he would call his dad as I was on the way. He called me back and said his dad told him it was probably the exterminator.I told him I will be there in a few minutes anyway. As I pulled up the hill to the car it was the exterminator’ car parked in the driveway. I couldn’t park my car on the top of the hill as his car was in the middle of the driveway and not enough room to pull alongside his car.I was relieved and got out of my car ,which is a stick shift Jeep, stood in plain sight so my grandson could see me ans started to talk to the exterminator on how to control stink bugs which kept getting into my house. My grandson saw me and came out of the house standing within20 feet of myself and the exterminator and about5 feet higher than we were looking down on us.As we were talking my grandson yelled gramps the jeep ! I turned around and the jeep was rolling down the hill !!! At the bottom of the 100 ft. Plus driveway was a busy road and the driveway had trees on both sides and all I could think of is the jeep rolling into the busy road and someone getting badly hurt,so I ran after the jeep catching it 40 or so feet down the hill. As the jeep was rolling backwards I got the door opened and grabbed the steering wheel to jump in. The problem was as I grapped the steering wheel I jerked it causing a severe turn and the only thing I saw was a TIRE TREAD ! Yes a tire tread in my face and it never moved!! The next think I knew was the tire was gone and the exterminator came screaming at me ,as I lay on the ground, your jeep just ran over you are you ok ??? Obviously I knew nothing of the jeep running over me and figured I must be in shock!! He kept screaming at me “your jeep just ran over you are you alright ” . I felt fine and Kept waiting to feel some kind of pain!, No pain so I decided to try and stand and did feeling great! The jeep made a sharp turn stopping on some landscaping trees and rocks and did not go into the road !! I RAN down to the jeep to look at the damage when the exterminator gave me a card with his home phone eying “Your jeep just ran over you” !he then said your grandson was watching the whole thing ask him! I did ask him and was told he saw the jeep run right through my head ,thus the tire tread in my face !! No Joke or Prank as GOD is my witness and I bur n in Hell if this isn’t 100 0/0 true ! A miracle above anything . I didn’t have a scratch or sore spot on my body and felt like I just took a nap ! GOD is so real and everywhere!!!!

God is still in the healing business, he is the same yesterday and today and forever he changes not glory to his name. I am a believer in Christ and come to realize we can all criticize or share a different opinion that’s everyone right but we should not speak against things we do not understand for today you hold too one opinion and tomorrow it changes just like cercumstances changes your situation. What you did not believe today you believe tomorrow because of your experiences.
I personally believe in miracles not because I have seen many in my lifetime but because I believe what the bible says look at Mark 16:17,18 And these signs shall follow them that believe in my name they shall cast out devils, they shall speak with new tongues
18 They shall take up take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing,it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover.
Firstly Jesus is speaking not Peter not Paul not Moses or Abraham
He said everything he sees the Father doing he does what ever he said is what God gave him so these scripture verses there was no time limit or expire date. I can understand how the majority of people don’t believe especially Christians because the scriptures tells us his very apostles did not believe him and you can read Mark 16:14 it’s all there.
Remember not everyone is at the same level or have the same purpose, firstly the scriptures said to them that believe so if you don’t believe you cannot cast out devils, speak in new tongues, heal the sick etc that’s promises that was given based on a condition providing you believe so we should bring down others who don’t believe perhaps later they may believe and operate in the authority that Christ Jesus gave his body.
Demons are very real today I myself operates in a deliverance ministry and encountered many demon possessions, I also speak in other tongues, and I know there are different types of tongues , some are known languages others are not some can be translated others interpreted some are just between you and God. You may call it babbling others groaning some say foolishness or even stupidity but what if it’s the Spirit of God in operation do you know so if we don’t no we shouldn’t speak against it let God be the judge, some people who prophecy first get the word in tongues, and after it’s interpreted so with that said should we argue with God we all known that will not make sense.
In conclusion if one speaks in tongues, cast out devils, heal the sick, works miracles, prophecy don’t condemn them incourage them and for the ones who don’t believe in such things we the ones who believe should no condemn them likewise we are still part of the same body of Christ what about if we let love prevail for these discrepancies has no bearing on your salvation.

Hello Rohl. Much of what you say is true, but speaking in tongues is not evidence of being filled with the Spirit or having faith and deliverance ministries are not biblical. There is not one verse that shows someone has a ministry that is dedicated to deliverance. I urge you to read this my friend to see if you can find error in some of what you wrote. As you said, some of us are further along while others are not. I think it’s unfair to say it in such a way that Richard is not as far along as you. Please read this:
