How To Know You Are A Christian: 10 Traits Of A True Christian

by Jack Wellman · Print Print · Email Email

Many people are uncertain of their salvation.  Some denominations teach that you can lose your salvation.  Some Christians believe they can lose their salvation.  How can you be sure that you are a Christian?  Here are 10 true Christian traits or ways that you can rest assured that you have the Holy Spirit inside of you, working in you, which provide solid, biblical evidence that you are a Christian and that you can know that you are saved.

Conviction from Sinning

Do you feel convicted when you sin?  Is there an overwhelming sense that you did something wrong.  A person that continually sins without remorse may not be a Christian at all. Of course the more a believer sins and the longer that they refuse to confess their sin, a hardening of the heart occurs and eventually, they slide into more and more sin.  First John 1: 6 states, “If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”  Of course even Christians sin after conversion as 1 John 1:8, 10 says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

Jesus said that the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, will come into believers lives and convict them when they sin.  Jesus said, Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.  When he comes, he will prove [literally, convict] the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment (John 16:7-8).  Every believer will still sin as 1 John 1:8-10 states but when we do sin, we will feel conviction from God the Holy Spirit and want to make confession to God (1 John 1:9).  If there is never any conviction over sin, then a believer might wonder if the Holy Spirit is living within them. Certainly, if there is no indwelling of the Holy Spirit, that person is unregenerate and still in their sins.

Loving One Another

Surely a Christian can not claim to be saved and yet hate his brother or sister.  Once again, we go to the Apostle John for evidence that a believer can know that they are born again.  First John 2:9-11 says, “Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness.  Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble.   But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.”  No one can hate their brother or sister in Christ and claim to be a believer.

Jesus said that this is a strong indication of believers that they love one another.  In John 13:34-35, He says, A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”  An important passage in these verses is where Jesus said, “by this” which indicates, by your love for one another, everyone will know that you are His disciples.  How?  “If you love one another.”  This is how everyone, believers and non-believers, will know that we belong to Christ and anyone who is Christ’s is safe and secure in knowing they are born-again (John 6:37, John 10:28-29).  In 1 John 4:20-21, God calls anyone a liar if they claim to be a believer and yet hates their brother or sister, “If someone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? This commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.”

Abstaining from Sin

As point number one stated, even Christians still sin, but they do not remain in sin or keep on sinning as if nothing is wrong.  I have heard many who have confessed to be Christians live in ways that are contrary to the ways of God but they state they are “carnal Christians.’  I can not help but be concerned for their salvation.  John stated a very serious warning to those who think they are saved but feel no conviction of continuing in sin because that is not the description of a born again believer.  First John 3:6-10 says, “No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother”.  Also John writes, “Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us” (1 John 3:24).

How To Know You Are A ChristianPraying Regularly

Imagine that you have just been married but you have also been deployed shortly after your honeymoon to an overseas military camp.  Now, you receive letters in the mail but you fail to read them except on Sunday and only then, just a few chapters.  And you also fail to communicate to your new bride.  So not only are you barely reading your brides letters but you are not calling her except only in emergencies.  This is how God must feel when we fail to pray to Him on a regular basis and to read the Bible only in church.  God has sent us the greatest love letters ever written – 66 books that show His unconditional love.  This is a love so deep that the groom died for you, yet we infrequently speak with Him or read His love letters to us (in the Bible).

By failing to pray on a regular, daily basis, and by not reading His letters to us (His Word), we show that He is not really that important to us.  I heard the story of a man who lived far away from his girlfriend.  He wanted to marry her and so he wrote her letters all the time but never visited her or called her on the phone.  After dozens of letters over a period of years, do you know what this woman did?  She married the postal carrier!  By not praying to God and by not reading His Word on a regular basis, we show that we really do not care as we profess we to.  We profess, we confess, but we do not possess.  We tend to communicate (pray) to Him only when we are in trouble or in emergencies and this treats God like a cosmic bell boy or treating Him like a 911 call.

Hungering and Thirsting for God

Most Christians love to learn and they feel a strong need to read the Bible.  To hunger and thirst for this is a strong indicator that the Holy Spirit is actively working in a believer.  In the Beatitudes, Jesus said, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matt. 5:6).  David had this intense hunger and thirst, writing “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water” (Psalm 63:1).  Isaiah 55:1 records, “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.”  Only Jesus can satisfy this deep thirst, as He said, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life (John 4:14).

Seeking Those Which Are Lost

God has a strong desire that men and women be saved and that none would die without Christ.  If you have no desire or interest to share the gospel with the lost, then you do not have the same kind of desire that God has for those who will perish without Christ.  What breaks the heart of God should break the heart of those who He has redeemed.  It’s as if you had a cure for cancer and you refuse to share this cure with those who are dying in the Cancer Ward.  We fear being rejected, scorned, or embarrassed and so we do not witness to people about Jesus Christ.  We fear men more than God.  Peter, Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Paul all understood this.  Paul told Timothy that God “wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim 2:4).  God has said, “For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!” (Ezekiel 18:32).

Sadly, 95% of Christians do not share their faith even though 73% of those who do not attend church have never been asked!  Are we ashamed of the gospel (Rom 1:16)?  Are we embarrassed about our faith in Christ?  We are to fear God more than man (Matt 10:28).  A stern warning comes from Christ: I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God.  But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God (Luke 12:8-9).

Glorifying Jesus Christ or Self?

God is seeking to be glorified in us.  God will not share His glory with another.  And why should He?  He is God!  He deserves all glory, honor and praise.  Isaiah 42:8 declares, “I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not yield my glory to another or my praise to idols.” The Westminster Shorter Catechism says that our chief purpose is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.  Too often I have been guilty of making myself look good and robbing God of His glory.  David did this once when he ordered a census of his troops.  This was prideful and arrogant of David because his real strength was in God and not in his own might. This is why God punished David.  When we seek to glorify ourselves or our own accomplishments, it’s as if we are robbing God of what is rightfully His.  When we take credit for things, we strip God of some of His glory.  God resists the proud but gives grace only to the humble (James 4:6).

How do we glorify God?  First Corinthians 6:19-20 asks, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”  These verses are more than just talking about what we put into our bodies…but what we do with our lives.  Our actions should reflect Christ in us and when others see Jesus living in us, others are attracted to Christ.  And when we boast about anything, let it be that we are who and what we are, all because of Christ Who lives in us.

Loving the World or Loving God?

We are told not to love the things of the world because if we do, the love of God is not in us.  The Apostle John says, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15).  This includes family as well.  Jesus plainly tells us that, “Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me” (Matt 10:37).  James said, “don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God” (James 4:4).  Most Christians spend more time on the computer, watching TV, or spending time on their own hobbies than they do in the Word of God (the Bible) or in prayer.  Of and by themselves, these things are not wrong, but when we spend inordinate amounts of time doing these things, then we are showing God that these are our real priorities.  Our time spent shows us where our heart is.

Our Hearts Are Where Our Treasure Is

We have been given many resources in this world.  Most Americans have been blessed above and beyond the vast majority of the world.  In comparison to the world’s population, we are truly rich.  If we have food for at least the next day, if we have sustenance in our cabinets for a few days, if we have heat in the winter and AC in the summer, if we have a roof over our heads, and we have more than a few dollars in the bank or our wallets, we are richer than 94% of the world.  Even so, Christians give only 2.5% of their income to support their local churches.  Only 1% of believers support Christian programs that they listen to regularly.  Jesus said For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Luke 12:34).   Your credit card statements and checkbook ledgers will reveal where your true treasure is.

Matthew 6:19-24 records Jesus’ statement that human’s tend to store up security in our possessions, including money saying, ”Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.   Our true priority should be seeking Christ and His kingdom above all else because if we do, we will have all that we need (Matt 6:33).

Do You Visit Orphans and Widows?

This might be one of the most overlooked job descriptions of a Christian.  It seems too simple yet few believers that I talked to, and even those in the church I under-shepherd do.  That is to visit the widows and orphans.  This is what pure and undefiled religion is really all about.  James put it succinctly when he wrote, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” (James 1:27). I do not want to overlook the part about keeping oneself from being polluted by the world.  This was covered in point number 7.

Here is an example.  I have regular visits with church members who are in the hospital and I visit the local nursing home around 3 times a week.  Surely I can’t mean that these seniors, 60% of which never receive any visitors at all, can’t be the orphans, can they?  We know that there are many widows but there are also many widowers there too and I believe that God would be pleased with us if we visited them too, and not just church members.  I don’t single out church members but I try to visit with those who seem so lonely and never receive any visitors.  At the Wednesday night Bible study, I invite whoever desires to come…of any faith, denomination, or non-believers too.

These senior men and women are not only widows and widowers, but they are also orphans.  I am sure that nearly every one of them has lost their parents already and so they are not only physical orphans but spiritual ones too.  James did not specify what age these orphans and widows would be.  Why wouldn’t God be pleased that we include these disenfranchised people in our visits?  They are no less orphans and widows/widowers than young or middle age people who have lost their mates and they are no different than children who have lost their parents. Visiting them is part of what James (and God) calls pure religion.  This is the meat and potatoes of Christianity.  God is a Father to the fatherless.  He is a defender of the widows and widowers.  God is not interested in religion but in a relationship.  We are to be the hands and feet of Christ on earth.

Examine Yourself

Of course, there are probably more than these 10 things.  This list is not comprehensive.  When I was writing this, I fell on my face with conviction seeing that I myself was in trouble.  I can not completely keep these 10 things perfectly.   It cut me to the quick so I am surely not judging others…but I judge myself and found myself guilty before a Holy and Just God.  I begged for mercy and pleaded for his patience.  I do not want to leave you feeling guilty before God, but as Paul said, to examine yourselves as I did.  We are commanded to do this in 2 Corinthians 13:5-7, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you–unless, of course, you fail the test?  And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test.  Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.

I’m a little confused by this.

Jack February 16, 2012 at 4:54 pm

Thank you Sandalwood for your comment. I apologize for it not being a bit clearer. These are indications that a person is not only growing in grace and knowledge, but ways to help us examine ourselves as to whether we are in the faith or not. No one can keep each of these things perfectly, it is not comprehensive as I said, but as Paul said in 1 Cor 13:6-7 “Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.” It is a way to see if are striving to become more holy and hungering and thirsting for righteousness. They are ways in which we can see that the Holy Spirit is working in us and thus, we are regenerate and truly a Christian. If someone claims to be a Christian and they have none of these traits at all, then a self-examination (in 2 Cor 13) is in order. Romans 12 is another great self-examination chapter.

I am sorry that it is not very clear. Please come back and visit us again.

Thank you Timmy for your comment. I would talk to your pastor today. Have you ever spoken with him before? If so, do so soon. There is no need to live in fear. Are you connected to a church? Ask for prayer. There is assurance from reading the Bible so stay in the Word every day and in prayer likewise.

Charles Specht February 16, 2012 at 6:15 pm

This is a great list!
I like this one the best: Abstaining from Sin

True Christians are not sinless, but we do sin less. And when a Christian sins, he loathes himself for it. Unbelievers do not hate sin like that. They may not like some of the consequences associated with certain sinful behaviors…but they don’t hate sin.

Jack February 16, 2012 at 6:23 pm

Thank you Mr. Specht. I totally concur with you sir. I actually used this in a sermon outline and when I was studying and praying about this, I thought, uh oh, I am truly falling short in these areas. But as you said, I hated it where I fell short and still fall short and that’s the point (& you got it!). The fact that I hate that I fall short is a way to know that the Holy Spirit is in me. To recognize that I fall short and to loathe myself for it, testifies that there is conviction and this conviction is from God the Holy Spirit.

Thank you sir for your fine comment. That encourages me so much. PS, I loved your website and truly, your topics are of great interest to me and we have much in common it appears. Please grace us again with your presence sir and come back again soon.

Asawa Steven February 17, 2012 at 1:20 pm

Sir, I did your assignment by reading what you asked me to read. I examined myself and found wanting, but I pray that God should broaden these in my heart so that I will seek His face for iam a sinner. Iam a teacher of C.R.S. in a junior secondary school in the Nigerian capital. Thanks, sir.

Jack Wellman February 17, 2012 at 3:50 pm

Asawa, I too fall on my face daily for a daily cleansing and seek God’s holiness in desperation for truly, even Christians continue to fall short. You are asking God to broaden these things and you are seeking to grow in His grace and knowledge. This list is not perfect as I am not either but your wanting and desiring to seek His face is a wonderful thing my friend. I believe God will hear and answer that desire. Thank you again for commenting sir. Please come back again.

Jordan February 17, 2012 at 1:41 pm

“Of course even Christians sin after conversion as 1 John 1:8, 10 says, “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.” ” John wrote this letter to deal with issues of Gnosticism. Gnostics did not believe that sin existed. John corrects this and says they are not “without sin.” In other words, they have sinned. In verse 9, he tells them that if they acknowledge they have sinned, God is faithful and they will experience forgiveness. In v. 10, John re-summarizes and says again that we have all sinned. At no point does he say that Christians will continue to sin.

Jordan February 17, 2012 at 1:56 pm

You write: “John stated a very serious warning to those who think they are saved but feel no conviction of continuing in sin because that is not the description of a born again believer.
Actually, John does not say anything to “those who think they are saved but feel no conviction of continuing in sin.” This passage simply mentions those who “continue to sin” and says they’re not “born of God.” Why would a Christian continue to sin? Perhaps you could if you really wanted to, but then “God’s seed” wouldn’t have “remained in you.” I don’t know what this whole “God’s seed” business is that John is referring to, but he makes it clear that if you’re born of God, you don’t sin. There’s nothing in this passage about how convicted of sin you are, unless I’ve overlooked it somehow. Anyways, I do agree that Christians ought to abstain from sin. Having said that, I’m gonna go have a life-long fast from sin 🙂 and if I do mess up at some point, John says “But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.” God bless!

Thank you Jordan.

Kris June 20, 2013 at 3:23 am

This brought this to mind.

Jhn 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

1Cr 15:38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.

1Cr 15:44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body.

1Cr 15:46 Howbeit that [was] not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.

1Cr 15:50 ¶ Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.

1Cr 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal [must] put on immortality.

What is the INCORRUPTIBLE??? What is the SEED? What is it that is the SPIRITUAL that we are to ‘put on’ ??

1Pe 1:23 Being BORN again, not of corruptible SEED, but of INCORRUPTIBLE , by the WORD OF GOD , which liveth and abideth for ever.

The new BIRTH is a result of the SEED which is the WORD of God which is INCORRUPTIBLE….and LIVETH ….and ABIDETH …FOREVER…eternal seed ! SPIRIT .
1Pe 1:24 For all flesh [is] as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away:

1Pe 1:25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

Does that Word “abide’ in YOU? …That Word of GOD is HIS SPIRIT….

Jhn 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, [they] are spirit, and [they] are life.

The Spirit of GOD …”quickeneth’ …aka MAKES ALIVE.

The flesh profiteth NOTHING.

The WORDS of GOD …ARE ….SPIRIT….they are LIFE.

If those Words be IN YOU and YOU IN them…abiding ….then you ARE IN CHRIST.

Being IN Christ is important….It is HOW one WALKS…..that brings forth .

om 8:1 [There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are IN Christ Jesus, who walk NOT after the flesh, BUT after the Spirit.

That is why it is no longer ‘taste not ‘ ‘touch not ‘ but obedience to the WORD that causes one to ‘put way ‘ or to ‘mortify ‘ the work of the flesh because we are no longer UNDER the condemnation that arises when we live BY the flesh.

The carnal mind …the fleshly mind is this ..

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind [is] ENMITY AGAINST GOD: for it is NOT SUBJECT TO the law of God, neither indeed CAN be.

Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

Rom 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

Rom 8:10 And if Christ [be] in you, the body [is] dead because of sin; but the Spirit [is] life because of righteousness.

Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

Rom 8:12 ¶ Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

Rom 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

The WORD in your heart being LORD of your thoughts and desires obeyed …MORTIFIES the deeds of the body as the MIND is subject to the WORD / HIS SPIRIT in the ‘inner man’ which is no longer subject to the LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.

By obedience to the Word / Spirit of GOD we overcome.

Rom 8:2 For the LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE IN CHRIST JESUS hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

THE WORD is HIS LAW that remains is the LAW of HIS spirit which is LIFE …and we receive the incorruptible seed of HIS WORD when we believe and follow Him as we make HIM LORD ….obeying His words.

The law that works in the fleshly members is overcome by way of His words known and obeyed by HIS spirit which we have received with meekness the engrafted word which is able to save our souls.

We are not under the RULE of the flesh with Jesus Christ as our LORD …meaning we obey His words.

Here is HOW we do the obeying .

Rom 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded [is] death; but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace.

Rom 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

Rom 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Here is HOW ….

2Cr 10:5 CASTING DOWN imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and BRINGING INTO CAPTIVITY EVERY thought to the obedience of Christ;

As we obey the Lord …His spirit/word…we ‘put to death’ …’mortify’ the deeds of the body ‘ and thus grow in spirit and in truth which is true WORSHIP

Jhn 4:23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

Jhn 4:24 God [is] a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.

It is the life lived in response to Him as we receive His word abide in His word which is HIS living spirit.

1Jo 2:14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him [that is] from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

We overcome the ‘wicked one” the FLESH by way of knowing and obeying /following Him

Mat 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

It is that WORD which is the CROSS which puts to death the FLESH which is enmity against God as we ‘deny ‘ ourselves/flesh and follow Him …THE WAY , THE TRUTH and THE LIFE.

The turning from obeying the flesh has attributes some are listed here so we can identify how repentance “looks’…great that we do not have to guess about how to identify repentance in ourselves …God has given us some discriptions of what we might look for …in ourselves and in others who might be seeking repentance and not sure what it looks like…it is not just to ‘say’ sorry …it has some ‘fruit’ we might learn to see for our good and His glory …

Also the truth of it does not leave us subject to various forms or feelings which are not according to the truth but are the real evidences of repentance so we need not be confused or deceived.

9 Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a GODLY sort,
what CAREFULNESS it wrought in you,
yea, what CLEARING of yourselves,
yea, what INDIGNATION,
yea, what FEAR,
yea, what ZEAL,
yea, what REVENGE!
In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

It seems that when God grants repentance it is that we are so intent to avoid being deceived by our own flesh that we exert great care and concern to learn from His word how to avoid such things…seeking wisdom that is FROM GOD

Wisdom from GOD is …

Jam 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is
first pure,
then peaceable,
gentle, [and]
easy to be intreated,
full of mercy and good fruits,
without partiality, and
without hypocrisy.

How important this section has been for me in seeing how to know the difference …the worldly sorrow is shallow and without fruit ….

The fleshly aspect of counsel is ,..

Jam 3:14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.

Jam 3:15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but [is]

The ‘wind up ‘ is ..

Jam 3:18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

The world seeks ‘peace’ by way of compromise ….The Lord offered us peace with God …HIS peace is different.

Mal 2:6 The law of truth was in his mouth, and iniquity was not found in his lips: he walked with me in peace and equity, and did turn many away from iniquity.

Mat 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Jhn 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

The world offers peace if we will compromise upon the TRUTH ..

Jesus Christ offered us the PEACE that passes all understanding because it is RECONCILIATION TO GOD by HIS standards and provision. NOT man’s way.

Our peace is Jesus Christ the righteous.

Our life is HID in HIM if we are HIS indeed.

Jhn 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

He overcame by ‘It is written’ and then he always did the will / word of His Father.

2Pe 1:2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you THROUGH THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD AND OF Jesus our Lord,

Jud 1:24 ¶ Now unto HIM that is ABLE TO KEEEP YOU FROM FALLING, and to present [you] faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

Jud 1:25 To the only wise God our Saviour, [be] glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

i love this article. i was baptized not even three months ago and i remember when i stood up and water poured all down my face i laughed. it was the most amazing feeling ever. i felt so connected or near to God at that moment, i get shivers when i think about it. as time passed i started to wonder though if others around me saw or noticed that i was a Christian. i wanted people to see a change in me when i first accepted Christ in my life in late august of 2011. it is definitly a struggle with some things (how i dress, tv shows i watch etc) but i feel convicted so much easier than before i was saved. thank you for writing this article! it was certainly an eye opener. i have heard of a man who said “once saved, always saved. you could kill a person every day of your life but as long as you were a christian while doing so you will go to heaven” and its nice to hear biblical standards of true christianity. you do a wonderful service here.

Jack February 18, 2012 at 12:19 pm

Thank you so much Susie for your wonderful comment. You wrote, “i feel convicted so much easier than before i was saved” and this to me is an indication that you are truly saved for no sinner feels remorse that makes them want to change but God the Holy Spirit alone does this work in us. I also loved your comment that if a person kills someone every day and as long as they are a Christian they will go to heaven. This to me shows that they are not saved because no one that is born-again continues in sin and if they claim to be Christian, and do not love their brothers or sisters, they are a liar and the truth is not in them (1 John 3:6,9).

Please come back again soon and thank you for such great words of comfort to us all.

wyatt March 1, 2012 at 7:53 pm

thanks for the post. i noticed i that i really need to share the gospel more with people, espescually in school. i want to, but then i get scared so i dont. i realize i need to stop being so afraid of man, and instead fear God. thanks again Jack. God bless

Jack March 1, 2012 at 9:37 pm

Hello Wyatt. Thank you for even thinking of being a witness for Christ. I witness at work and in the street, to my family, to strangers, but I often use Bible tracts and let the Word of God do its work. The power is in the message, not the messenger. It comes in time. Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you His power to be more of a bold witness. You are doing it in love…for their eternal future and if you think of it this way, maybe that will help. God gives us His power and the words to speak come from the Spirit of God. Take heart…it gets easier each time you do but you will feel such joy afterward. Remember, when you are rejected, they are rejecting the message and not you. And when you are persecuted, you actually receive a blessing from God: 1 Peter 3:13-14, “But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened. Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.”

I admit I’d never considered seniors as orphans. I do visit with many of them, more often than not my grandparents, but also friends.

This is a commendable article which helps to expose to the us some of the ingredients required to be a good Christian

chis September 16, 2012 at 1:27 pm

jack, That’s true. Personally, i’ve discovered that some christians are failing God. Everything about the word of God revolves round ‘faith’ but some christians live their lives daily exhibiting 0’/, of faith.

Jack Wellman September 16, 2012 at 1:30 pm

Chis, this is so true. Thank you for your comment. At times, even I have been guilty of lacking faith and God forgive me…because that is a lack of trust in God. Well said Chis. I agree.

Florence October 23, 2012 at 4:39 am

Thank you so much for the good work done through these articles. I have never taken visiting orphans a serious issue though i help people. Now that i know i will start wih the little that i have. God bless you.

Thank you so much for writing this article! 🙂 it was very important to me to read it.

Anna February 20, 2013 at 7:43 am

This was helpful, but I have questions. When we talk about praying regularly, How does one define regular. Does the length of prayer matter, How should you go about praying eg kneeling, sitting, standing, eyes closed or open etc. I would love to pray without feeling guilty of doing it the wrong way.

Jack Wellman February 20, 2013 at 10:44 am

Thank you Anna for your question. The length of the prayer is not important…but I myself like to be on my face, hands, and knees since in the Bible everytime someone encountered God, they lay flat on their face, hands, and knees out of reverence for God. The Bible never says whether our eyes need to be open, closed, or whatever. You can stand and raise your hands and pray, or kneel, but the method I prefer is to bend my knees and lay flat on my face before God in prayer out of reverence and respect for our Great King.

Dear Pastor,
I gain a lot in your recent article,I most comment on your level of creativity.God will continue to bless you,in this christian journey the Lord will lift up above all circumstances GOd bless you.

Jack Wellman February 28, 2013 at 11:42 am

Thank you Kingsley. What an encouragement you are my friend. I myself was convicted to examine myself as to whether I was and am in the faith and it is a constant battle for I most certainly lack in many of these 10 traits.

charles March 2, 2013 at 12:33 am

I wish,i had known about this site all the while but i thank God that i finally hook up with it.please pastor,i have been battling with sin ever since i got born again but since i read your article, there is a great improvement in my christain life.thank you so much for this wonderful word of encouragement .

Jack Wellman March 2, 2013 at 11:22 am

I am so glad you liked this. When I wrote it, it convicted me for sure for I fall so short of His Holiness and prefection but we are at work in a work in progress.

Kris October 29, 2013 at 11:50 am

Dear Charles,

Take heart. Remember that when the Lord saved those who believe that the flesh and the carnal mind are going to be the battle field in terms of thought life. We are reminded how to overcome by the Word . Study it , ‘eat ‘ it daily, ‘keep it ” and remember how Jesus overcame temptation ‘it is written’ …This is to “submit to God , resist the devil and he will flee from you’

The holding forth the Word of GOd to our own minds is useful to the condition of standing IN Christ ….as we do hold the truth in faith the temptations become less able to deter our loyalty of heart toward the Savior.

Here are a few scriptures to encourage you .

Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

2Cr 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

The “results’ or ‘fruit’ of this way of walking after and in Christ does this …

Colossians 3
King James Version (KJV)
3 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.

8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.

12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

17 And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

We do not ‘DO” these things to ‘get’ salvation but that we might have victory over the carnal mind which is enmity against God.

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

We are to live life after coming to the Lord by way of being ‘transformed by the RENEWING of the MIND” and thus …

2Cr 4:16 For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

The ‘inward man” is the spirit which we received from Christ through the ‘incorruptible seed” which is the Word of God.

We keep ourselves IN the Word and the Word then keeps us IN Christ as we respond to it walking along trusting and obeying His Word that comes from Him and rises up from where we have ‘sown’ it .

We cannot obey what we do not first KNOW …so through the knowledge of the Word we are brought to learn and understand more and more as we grow up UNTO HIM.

Jhn 3:30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

As LORD his words give us direction to follow after Him …we ‘deny ‘ ourselves as we put Him first in our desire , thoughts and actions following the thoughts that are HIS through His Word in our minds. His spirit then brings these to mind as we go throughout our days.

If we love Him we ‘keep ‘ his commands and thus are led by them …His Word” is spirit and it is life’ according to Jesus so it is HIMSELF IN us by way of His SPIRIT which will guide us according to His will which is expressed and communicated to our minds through His words.

When we belong to HIM we will be willing and desire to submit to His words which will grow us up and give us understanding as we mature in this walk .

May you be comforted and encouraged in this as you continue in His Word as Jesus said and ‘then you will be my disciples INDEED”!

Kris June 20, 2013 at 3:36 am

How glad I am that we may learn about this …and that it seems so many are willing to concern themselves with this aspect of our life in Christ. It IS a struggle but those who don’t know the Lord do not struggle against sin so it is encouraging to hear of those hear who love the Lord enough to care about this.

It seems that there is a darkness afoot which has many deaf , dumb and blind to the walk we are instructed to pursue. Thank you so much for bringing this to the site Jack …another winner of a topic!

Caleigh June 28, 2013 at 9:07 pm

Thank you so much for posting this! Lately I’ve been really convicted of the music I listen to… And I actually deleted every song that contained profanity (over 100) from my iPod. I have also struggled with the Internet and trust me bad things are more addictive than good things… And i can testify that if you are in sin and you don’t try with all of your will to get out, it will drag you down and the devil will try as hard as he possibly can to ruin your relationship with God… I am still trying to get out of that sin but one thing thAt assures me of my salvation is that I HATE THE SINS. Every time I sin I’m almost to tears asking God to forgive me… And it breaks my heart to think that MY sins make him unhappy… But I know that God is helping me through And he WILL get me out of this pit!

Jack Wellman June 28, 2013 at 9:13 pm

Hello Caleigh. Love your comment. This conviction and striving to overcome is truly evidence that the Holy Spirit is in you and working thru you. I am so overjoyed that you have that sense of sin which offends a Holy God and that obedience is tied to love. Great comment. So insightful. May God continue to richly bless you in your walk with Christ. Oh, that I had you in the church that I am the under-shepherd of to the Great Shepherd.

Genesis July 2, 2013 at 5:07 pm

I was reading your article and I do get convicted but it doesn’t bring me to tears(should I be worried?) and I do love Christians, I got angry at my mom and I couldn’t stay mad at her, I don’t keep on sinning and I sometimes get frustrated cause of my sin and I do pray regularly, one time I was doubting my prayers and. Got really worried cause if I doubted in my prayers I can’t receive anything from the lord( is that good?) and I sometimes thirst and hunger for god (should I be worried?) s trying to tell my mom about the gospel cause I felt the Holy Spirit nudge me to do so, and I am not glorifying myself and I don’t love the world but I am trying to love god. For some reason I am routing and I am really mad cause I want to know I am saved so I looked up this article and wanted to know the characteristics of a saved person and I was going through the list and even though I do have some of these I’m still doubting cause of fear I may not be saved.

Jack Wellman July 2, 2013 at 6:06 pm

Hello Genesis. The very fact that you are concerned is evidence that you are saved because no one can keep all 10 of these at all times and there are more evidences than these I am sure. If you are keeping some of these, this is strong enough evidence you are born again. Now, if you don’t have any, then you have a reason to be concerned. No doubt in my mind Genesis that you are saved for those who are not in Christ could care less about a list like this. See what I mean my friend? May God richly bless you. You are not alone. Fear not though. Read the conclusion and see my own reaction in writing this. No worry.

Genesis July 5, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Thanks Pastor Jack, can doubt turn into fear or fear turn to doubt?

Genesis July 5, 2013 at 8:10 pm

I think that if I take away the fear I take away the doubt, does that make sense? Or should I take away doubt to take away the fear?

Jack Wellman July 6, 2013 at 5:06 pm

Thanks Genesis. I believe staying out of sin, staying in prayer, the Bible and church will do both…for the most part, in taking away fear and doubt.

Genesis July 8, 2013 at 12:22 pm

Thank you, and who or what brought sin into the world? I think that it was us but satan tempted eve to eat the apple so wasn’t it Satans fault? but we chose to disobey god, and why did god put the tree of knowledge if we were going to sin cause of it?

Jack Wellman July 10, 2013 at 1:46 pm
Kris July 8, 2013 at 1:18 pm

Thank you for your question. Many people have opinions about what sin is and what Eve actually ‘ate’ as a result of her disregard for what GOD told Adam and Adam told her.

We do not know what ‘fruit’ it was that they ate …the point is that they disobeyed the command of GOD.

Ignorance is no excuse since Adam was told to inform Eve and he was given the charge to ‘keep the garden’

The scriptures record that Adam was ‘with’ Eve at the time she was engaging in thought to consider what God said and even IF he said it …or IF she recalled what he said correctly

Doubting God’s Word may be the very first step in being deceived.

We can see that she began to doubt the goodness of God by what is recorded in her thought process.

If you compare what God told Adam adn then what Eve considered as she thought about the question’ Hath God said’ posed to her by the Serpent we can see the decline in her attitude about whether God is GOOD and had the best interest of the man and his wife in mind when he gave the warning command to Adam.

If you will take your Bible and compare what Adam was told and then see what Eve erroneously began to think it is clear that she ‘left out the word ‘freely’ which indicated God’s plentiful provision…then she added the word ‘touch’ which further indicated her point of view regarding God’s word as ‘restrictive’ rather than protective.

Then she changed the word ‘surely ‘ to ‘lest’ bringing about the opening of her attitude to the complete opposition and denial of what GOD actually did say .
Thou shalt SURELY die’ which was to warn of the CONSEQUENCE of making a decision to disobey God’s warning.

God knew of the danger that Adam and Eve did not . Had Adam ‘kept the garden’ the serpent would not have gotten far enough into the situation to confront Eve.

Had Eve retained the Word of GOD she too would have been vigilant and deposed the question as Jesus did with ‘It is written’ to answer any doubts about GOD’S goodness.

God’s Word exposes what destroys people “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge’

Jesus told us the way to be equipped to protect our relationship with Him and with others is to ‘put on the whole armour of GOD” which is HIS WORD.

We are told to ‘Study to show yourself approved to GOD a WORKMAN that needs not to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth’

The word itself ‘rightly divides’ by the comparing of spiritual things with spiritual’ that is to compare the Word with the Word ..the whole context of the scriptures.

We have been given the ability and the means to know what GOD will reveal if we are meek to receive it and desire to please Him.

Those who desire to know the truth WILL be taught of Him if they are willing to obey and go into the study of the scriptures with expectation of His fulfilling the promise” Seek and ye shall find ‘ ….”Without faith it is impossible to please GOD …those who come to Him must believe that HE IS AND that He is a rewarder of those who DILIGENTLY seek HIM.”

There is no need to be deceived as Eve was …or disobedient as Adam was who knew what God had said but went ahead anyway and ate of the tree which had been distinctly forbidden.

The urge to serve ourselves and our flesh is thwarted by our knowledge and acknowledgment of God being worthy to be honored, pleased and obeyed rather than taking what we want to please our flesh.

Jesus Christ gave us the ability and the means to disobey sin …to turn from the desires of the flesh that lead away from the satisfaction that God has offered to us through His Son reconciling us back to Himself with a full pardon.

Living IN Christ Jesus comes about as we seek and then learn from His Word HOW to live in that Salvation that He has made available through His obedient life even unto the death of the cross .

The EVIDENCE of HIS victory is the Resurrection which many witnesses attest to.

Your Holy Bible is the testimony of those witnesses …prior to His coming …with prophesy….During His lifespan on earth and in linear time …and After with many who were contemporary witnesses to His life writing their own testimony to what they saw and heard .

Doubt is one of the key leverages that the Devil has used against man enjoying the relationship with GOD that he was designed to have .

The hinderance to our confidence in what GOD has had recorded is through knowledge supplied by GOD through holy men of God who spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

They did not receive it from men or flesh and blood but it was inspired or ‘god breathed’ as 2 Tim 3:16 states.

The Word is a ‘living word’ or as scripture says ‘quick’ …which means living .

Eve’s decline into unbelief and then disobedience is a record of how all who descend into lives of error begin …
Next time you are faced with the question ‘Hath God said’ either from within your doubtful mind or from others remember this .

It is the WORD that forms faith within those who hear and take it to heart.

The establishment and further growth of faith comes from hearing and heeding ..that is to apply it to life.

All scripture is God breathed and is PROFITABLE …for ….doctrine…that is what to believe and how to apply it to thinking and living life.

It is also profitable for reproof…to RE PROVE to us the right way ..the truth …to have it circulating in our minds exactly WHAT GOD has said not guess about it ,…adding to it or taking from it will be a powerful weapon against doubt which is the first aspect that begins to corrupt or wear away our faith and confidence in He who has demonstrated such amazing love for the fallen and disobedient world .

Also the Word is for CORRECTION in HOW to make changes in our lives and thinking so we will avoid more and more as we go along following after the truth all kinds of changes that are useful to avoid things that seek to ‘steal, kill and destroy ‘ not just this life on earth but our eternal life that GOD wants for us to enjoy with Him forevermore.

All of this that the Word offers to those who are willing to receive with meekness the engrafted Word which is able to save the soul …are INSTRUCTION in RIGHTEOUSNESS…so we need not guess about it …

God’s righteousness is what we need to overcome all of what may tempt us to doubt.

We are told by God to ‘seek ye first the kingdom of GOD and HIS righteousness…. and all things will be added unto you’

What ‘all things”? so much more than THINGS of this world…but the treasures of eternity and heavenly truths that are glorious to behold

Seek the truth and seek understanding for understanding will dispel doubts that those who are not willing to seek will never find answers to the satisfaction of their souls.

God is all wise and all generous to those who are willing to seek His guidance as they go through His revealed Word trusting His capability and desire to be our guide…to teach us through His Word and by His Word all things that pertain to life and godliness.

Genesis July 8, 2013 at 10:14 pm

I have fallen backwards from god a little cause I do study but forget to meditate an now I’m in a mess like now when I meditate there is something but not sure what it is that prevents me from meditating and I haven’t moved past this cause I don’t know what’s preventing me from moving on

Jack Wellman July 10, 2013 at 1:39 pm

Genesis. Picture this. We are all children of God. I being a father and grandfather watched my children as they began to learn to walk and they fell time and time again. Did I give up on them? Did I grow angry with them? No, I always helped them up and encouraged them to try again and again, and to the millionth time if necessary. The point is that we all stumble and fall but the good news is that we have the desire to go forward again and the “wanting” to move forward is evidence of a person being saved. The lost have no such desire. Make sense? Have faith, trust God, His love never runs out…His love never fails…even when we do.

Kris July 10, 2013 at 1:59 pm

Jack a beautiful and elegant reply ….how comforting too! YOU ROCK!

“Wanting to move forward is evidence of a person being saved”

Great reminder! The oppose and accuser of the brethren wants to trip up and then keep people down with discouragement . Those who love God are grieved to realize how ease it is to fall …yet God IS our encouragement and with His love we cannot help but want to please Him no matter what lie the enemy of our soul may pull on us.

Thank you for the great response to Genesis!

‘Just what makes that little old ant .
Think he’ll move that rubber tree plant’
Anyone knows an Ant CAN”T move a rubber tree plant’

But he has high hopes’
He has high hopes’
He has high in the sky, apple pie …ie HOPES

This encouraging song of yesteryear came to mind …don’t remember it all .

OUR HOPE is not in our own ability but in Jesus Christ who supplies us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places .

We can be assured that HE wants us to finish well and so we can ‘get back up ‘ and ‘get back on the horse’ whenever we may trip or fall….>We are learning day by day that our strength in not just in ourselves but HIS strength is sufficient to complete the work that HE has begun in us!

Thank you for the reminder….things sometimes wear away our hope.

Be not weary in well doing for in due time we will reap if we faint not.

If we were already mature and just the same as Jesus then one of us would be unnecessary! ….something like that ….heeheee….Glad I need Him!

Kris July 9, 2013 at 12:45 am

You do not say what kind of meditation you have been engaged in. There is a kind that has crept into churches in the past few years that is actually a way that people open themselves up for spirits that are NOT of God .

The methods and ‘mantras’ used are from ancient practices that the Lord has warned against but many who are in churches have little or no knowledge of these things that are being offered under the guise of ‘contemplative’ or ’emergent ‘ doctrinal and practicum auspices…

To meditate in the way that the Word of God directs is to keep His word in our thoughts …considering and running his thoughts through our minds . Referring back to scripture in every case we are faced with.

The idea of ‘keeping ‘ your thoughts on the Lord does not suggest nor advise anyone to ’empty one’s mind’ to ‘raise your consciousness….’which leads to a state of “altered state ‘ which is simply to open the mind …to allow some’ THING” to take control.

God’s word directs us to control our thinking …to “put on HIS thoughts”.

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with ALL thy MIND.

Mar 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with ALL THY MIND, and with all thy strength: this [is] the first commandment.

Act 20:19 Serving the Lord with ALL HUMILITY OF MIND, and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the lying in wait of the Jews:

Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but BE YE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWING OF YOUR MIND, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Eph 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Phl 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

This does not involve a ritual , or a posture …it does not draw attention to oneself …it is nothing to boast in …it is an obedient action upon God’s command to study and to put on His words.

1Pe 1:13 Wherefore GIRD UP THE LOINS OF YOUR MIND, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

How does on ‘gird up the loins of one’s mind”?

Eph 6:14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about WITH TRUTH, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

sa 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Isa 55:8 ¶ For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

Isa 55:9 For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isa 55:10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:

There is a ‘technique’ being offered to believers that they might ’empty’ their minds or use a repeated word…this is NOT what the word recommends to us …we are to THINK on the things GOD tells us to think on. HIS WORD!

Psa 119:105 NUN. Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

As you keep the word in your thoughts it will expel the darkness….KEEP the Word in your mind. Sow the WORD into your mind is ‘seed’…it is INCORRUPTIBLE SEED

1Pe 1:23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Isa 55:11 So shall MY WORD be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper [in the thing] whereto I sent it.

Our minds are to be ‘single’ ….to be set upon the Lord , His WORD is to fill our minds.

The Word is His spirit.

We are not to mix ‘spiritual ‘ practices which are NOT OF God but are OF this world.

This would lead to double mindedness. We are to have only ONE Lord.

Jam 1:8 A double minded man [is] unstable in all his ways.

Eph 4:14 That we [henceforth] be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, [and] cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

Phl 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Phl 4:7 And the peace OF GOD, which passeth all understanding, shall KEEP your hearts and MINDS THROUGH Christ Jesus.

Phl 4:8 ¶ Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are TRUE, whatsoever things [are] HONEST, whatsoever things [are] JUST, whatsoever things [are] PURE, whatsoever things [are]LOVELY, whatsoever things [are] of GOOD REPORT; if [there be] any VIRTUE, and if [there be] any PRAISE,THINK ON THESE THINGS.

What things??? All of these are referring to the WORD OF GOD. Think the WORD!

many times people like to take this verse and think ‘lovely thoughts’ like fantasies or some kind of fairy tale images..>>THIS is earthly ..NOT OF God.

The godly thoughts are based upon the Word of GOD and these discriptives are OF God’s Word which is HIGHER than the thoughts which are figments of imagination which have been influenced by the world.

HERE is how God has directed US to hold HiS Word in mind ….How to ‘meditate’ upon His words.

2Cr 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Any other form of ‘meditation’ is …earthly , sensual and NOT OF the Lord Jesus Christ.

Doing what this says will keep you plenty occupied with what will build you up …not puff you up.

1Cr 8:1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.

Take heed…practitioners of the New Age tend to be ‘humbler than thou’ in a sense….so ‘enlightened’ they twist the scriptures …….Keep your head in the scriptures and watch out for ‘tares’ and ‘wolves’ who come to fleece the flock with various ‘techniques ‘ and ‘rituals that have no worth and may be dangerous.

1Ti 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane [and] vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

1Ti 6:21 Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace [be] with thee. Amen.

Jhn 8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, IF YOU CONTINUE IN MY WORD, [then] are ye my disciples indeed;

His Word ‘disciples’ those who continue in them.

Jhn 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

Thank you for sharing this. I really needed to hear this message.

Norma October 29, 2013 at 11:04 am

Here I was going to ask whether or not I had the Holy Spirit in me…and boy do I, after reading your list! I am still learning so much…it’s like information overload at times… 🙂 YAYYYYY! I am going to Heaven 😛 I may not have all of them to where they should be…but am still learning and growing. 🙂

Seriously though…I was wondering…and I should have known better. It seems anything of this world…and I am being serious here…from watching movies…which I barely do anymore, crafting…which I just can’t seem to do…reading anything other then my lessons or the Bible…bugs me…

I do notice that when I go to church I am SO happy to be around my fellow brothers and sisters…participating in events, etc. I feel safe too

I am getting over being extremely depressed, developing PTSD (Military stuff), having panic attacks, etc. It is still a struggle for me, because at times…I still experience fear, etc. However, He has Blessed me with calming a lot of those feelings, etc., so I keep moving forward, with Him. I will be the first to say though, it’s tough…

I live with 2 agnostic young men too and ughhh, is it tough. Knowing what I know now and just struggling with them in a lot of areas. These guys are very intelligent too. I remember at one point I was faced with both of them…and being still so young in Jesus…that I was stuck…literally I didn’t know what to say…so I finally had to tell them, I just don’t know. I talked to my mom about it afterwards and she said next time, when you say that…to add, but my Pastor can help you a lot more if you would like to raise these things up to him. LOL

Now I am NOT perfect, no way and I do have my struggles…wow do I ever have struggles…and I can get down pretty easily…but then I start telling myself…YES He does LOVE me, YES He has forgiven me…YES I am worthy or I would still be out there not believing…

I am extremely raw in my feelings, etc. It’s like I am starting all over again, with everything, emotion wise. A lot of times when I come across mature Christians, they are pretty harsh…forgetting that at one point they were unbelievers too. This makes me feel worse. Some people you have to really be that way with, but I for one…tend to back off of those types, because it puts too much fear in me…how about just a hug! Sometimes, it’s all a person needs…to help them get through their struggles…be a friend too. Jesus would do that…just hold them…and let them feel the LOVE. I can’t wait to be able to do just that…hold Him and have Him just hold me. (Makes me cry every time I envision that)

I think what I am saying is, all mature Christians should really step back and remember the younger Christians, be gentle, Jesus is gentle…and patient…and just talk to us, cramming scriptures down our throats can help or not, but also just talking to us…get to know us. See how we may be struggling…I think it’s why so many may fall away.

So sir…THANK YOU again for your wonderful help…mainly because you know how to talk to people and as Jesus does, you give me much needed comfort…Praise God!

God surely has blessed you to encourage us younger in the faith ones 🙂 and I know the more maturer ones too 🙂

Gods Blessings on you sir!

I feel so wonderful now 🙂 Off to do my happy dance!!!

Jack Wellman October 29, 2013 at 11:18 am

Hello Norma…what an encouragement you are my friend. I don’t believe that any Christian lives all of these out completely and I know I don’t either.

As far as these agnostic men, all you can do is show them love and pray for them for God alone is the evangelist in that He draws men to Christ (John 6:44) and so you can leave that up to God for only the Holy Spirit reveals the truth found in the Bible and can show them that Jesus Christ is real and that they need a Savior in a bad way.

Kris October 29, 2013 at 12:13 pm

Dear Norma,

Don’t you just love Jack’s sweetness of spirit but strength of stand in the Word !

I know your shock and sorrow in terms of ‘believers’ who are harsh. It seemed like all those who I THOUGHT would have rejoiced in my new life in Jesus turned out to be those who mocked and ridiculed my faith when I first began in my life in Christ .

Over the years I have had many ‘disappointments’ among those who I would have expected to respond to things in life by the counsel of the Word . I met many who had been ‘in church’ for years who seemed to not have even read what Christ wrote as I listened to their prayers in prayer groups.

I o not say this to condemn anyone but as a new Christian and even as we go through years of following Christ we may be shocked as we encounter people who claim to follow Christ but who are not exhibiting what we have read to expect among the brethren .

I have wondered about this and asked the Lord to help me understand it . Some of them simply may not have really come to Christ but have been ‘pew warmers’ . Some attend church but are not ‘the church’ . It is a ritual or a routine for them to ‘go to’ church.

Also some have ‘crept in ‘ , tares , people who are something like infiltrators who have an ‘agenda’ …may not even know their function which has been allowed for what reason we may not know until we are with the Lord in heaven.

Scripture does warn of false teachers and false believers AMONG the body which we are warned to realize are there but not to “pull up’ ..they will become more apparent for us to avoid and deal with as we expose the truth by way of the WOrd in our own minds .

We will ‘see’ truth and error first IN our own ‘eye’ and then it will expose in the various offerings of influences around us.

We are not to look around and seek to ‘see’ others lives as false but we are told to become acquainted with the truth so that any counterfeit will not become our larger influence.

Know the truth and the truth will make you free’ is not just to become aware of our own areas we need to submit to the Lord but to avoid becoming deceived by false things that come across our path.

Hindrances in this world are plentiful and surround us yet we are not to be downtrodden by them but to know that the Lord has given us His Word to guide us and protect us as we go through this world . We are IN it but not OF it.

It has been one of the hardest and most disappointing things for me to realize that not all ‘nice’ people are “OF the Lord’ ! Even coming in His name .

Among those who are simply growing and perhaps stumbling as they learn of GOD and how to follow Christ there are among us those who are seeking gain rather than godliness.

Being patient and continuing in His Word is the profitable thing to do to learn from HIM all things that pertain to life and godliness in this walk

May you find comfort in the truth that “what HE has begun in you He will perfect unto the Day ” Going forward no matter whatever else you endure in this life and allow God to be glorified in all is worthy .

Luk 21:8 And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Jam 3:17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

John 15:17 These things I command you, that ye love one another.

18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.

19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.

22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

23 He that hateth me hateth my Father also.

24 If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

25 But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

Jack Wellman October 29, 2013 at 12:22 pm

As always Kris, your humility and godly wisdom are clearly revealed. What saddens me about many older or more experienced Christians is the fact that knowledge puffs up and when I see these “veterans” of the Word speak somewhat downwardly or condescendingly to new Christians I remind them of this; what do you know, what do you have, and what have you learned that you did not receive? The answer is the international symbol for nothing! (0). Every believer needs a Paul or a mentor…every believer need to be a mentor to a Timothy but all Christians need one another. Many of the most humble, contrite, and tender hearts are those of new believers who have not yet lost that “first love.” May we never lose it and may we understand that we did not come to ourselves (like the Prodigal) OF ourselves. Glory and honor and credit and praise all belong to Christ and to Him alone for we have nothing to bring but hands full of sin. As Jesus said “unless you are like children….” but I noticed He never said, “unless you are like parents.” Just thinking. Thanks Kris. Great points. You have a heart for all of us, new or old, and you have the gift of mercy…..of that I am convinced!

Kris October 29, 2013 at 12:38 pm

Jack dear brother in Christ!

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement as always ! I cannot tell you how it soothes the soul .

I have tales to tell of the ways that I was dealt with by those who claimed His name but were not OF Him . I guess in this day and time it is just part of our ‘education’ in what is going on .

I believe that even in those times of being confronted or assaulted that because we want to follow after Him and be taught of Him as we go about endeavoring to obey what we DO know and what we are being corrected in all things that we thus come to more understanding of what is and what is not the way the Word is to be applied.

I have fallen for many ‘false ‘ presentations …ugh …so sorry to say and yet now those things which were useful for deceit I have now seen and will avoid as I pay more heed to what the Word says and HOW the Lord would have me understand it .

It has taken me a long time to learn …[so slowly] not to fall for some of the things that did trip me up…I pray that I will not ignore my lessons so hard won!

As we see more and more people born into the Humanist world teachings …who do not know that they do not know the truth of God’s whole counsel we have more eagerness to try to engage them in the things God has for us to learn.

I see however that being marinated in the various false doctrines and lies, eating at the ‘table of demons’ has darkened further and younger the hearts of people

YET God is not hindered in His intentions as we who are led by Him obey and allow the Word to be in our minds but also in our hearts and then our mouths . To make known those things .

It is ‘risky’ and in truth is a ‘laying down our lives ‘ in effort to awaken anyone who is willing to hear what GOD will bring up from His word in us.

“Fear not’ to endure the disappointments and slanders is a good exhortation.

The first people who brought me around to the Word …kidnapped me and that is tale only worth telling because of the ways that GOD worked in that ordeal to rescue me and allow me to continue to follow Him.

His arm is not shortened even when we are clueless and even foolish .

As you said we do not want to be ‘puffed up’ but to be edified by the love of GOD which surpasses when we are bereft of what to do.

I do NOT want to ever be a ‘tinkling brass or a sounding cymbal’ without substance of the faith which is His . Learning to submit every thought is a lifelong and ongoing challenge is it not? From every side we are brought to see and hear all kinds of things which may either cause us to go to Him and the Word to learn what is useful for His purposes…or to be led into a ditch.

However …the ditch is not a grave for those who are His and He will come along or bring along side those who love Him in truth and help us to get back upon the Way which is the ONLY way we are desiring to walk …IN Christ …not according to the flesh but according to His Spirit which is given to all those who are His and love His appearing.

God Bless you faithful brother …your words are healing and humbling !

Norma October 29, 2013 at 12:58 pm

Thank you so much Kris and Jack! To all 🙂 And yes I do think that of Jack! 🙂 It’s what draws me back here a lot!

It’s your way with your words in your responses to people. It is very comforting to know that there truly are people like you out there that genuinely care.

So many are so rushed and busy…and heck, I even brought up this to I believe a mature Christian several weeks back…at our potluck…as I was going through the same thing. I couldn’t believe people couldn’t see the Truth…but I was reminded that I was once a non-believer too. Now this gentleman, was basically saying the same thing…and I just spoke right up, reminding him we all were once there…I noticed quite a few mature Christians just looking at me…LOL My mom even brought it up. I wasn’t looking to be looked at …just was trying to remind him was all.

I didn’t mean it in a bad way…but I just see a lot. I am very observant…probably got that from being a former police officer…and been in law enforcement a good majority of my life…at home now…disabilities and all. hehe

My mom, says, she learns a lot from me…or is reminded by me, things she has forgotten. Of course all the Glory goes to God. 🙂 A lot of times I am just talking to her about stuff I learn or hear…always need to run something through her or others.

I wish I could be at my church with them 24/7 lol. It’s scary being out here as a baby haha

However, I am so glad you are here Jack and THANK YOU again and THANKING God for you too!

Kris October 29, 2013 at 2:04 pm

What a beautiful heart I observe in your sharing. You have been in some really great [ albeit dangerous ] positions in your life to have an opportunity now as you are in the process of gobbling up the Word to be taken ‘back’ .

The Lord has done this in my own walk, as I have been consuming His Word I am being taught by those things I have experienced in this world that He has used to demonstrate or explain through His Word on the ‘subject’ of each event and experience to show me what was going on compared to what He says .

Some of my life was simply not knowing His Word …some before I came to have him as Savior and Lord I was deceived by my own flesh …some by way of others persuading me ….but as God tells us ” My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge’ …not necessarily knowledge but HIS Word and how it explains itself through the whole content and context of His word.

After coming to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ I was tripped up by a few things.

I lacked wisdom and understanding. My zeal was not according to knowledge but as I stuck my ‘neck out’ in desire to share Christ and in desire for true fellows of faith I was deceived.

I trusted untrustworthy …I did not know HOW to ‘test the spirits ” I did not trust my own memory and did not recognize that the word arising from my hungry consuming of the Word actually WAS the truth about some of the things that were coming across my path.

Many things were not OF GOD but were in my path …I did not deal with them according to the ways GOD tells us to . I fell prey because I submitted to ungodly authorities . So be it as I was not left without the way to learn corrections.

I sought to be corrected even as I sought to do what I did see in the Word that GOD called us to do . So I spoke ..I pushed myself out of my shell to speak to people about Christ and was worried about their destination due to not having heard.

Many of the assaults upon believers , especially when brand new are intended by the enemy of God to deter us from speaking …as we see in Acts …those who were speaking were warned not to speak ‘anymore in that NAME” …the NAME of Christ and all that it contains in truth is what shines upon people’s need for a Savior .

In the book of Acts the people who enjoyed their positions of control and honor apart from God did not like the ‘competition’ and Christ is He who puts in contrast what is righteous with the status quo of the fallen world and our fallen condition.

The devil does not want to lose those who he has presumed are his ‘captives’ …but Jesus Christ has led captivity CAPTIVE ….we speak what He brings to mind from His Word as we keep on renewing our minds.

Those who enjoy their dark deeds due to being deceived by their darkened hearts will not like to have light shined upon their ‘territory’ which they may not realize is really the servitude they have been in through the deceit of the god of this world who is allowed for a season to decieve those who reject the opportunity and offering our Lord has made for all who will .

Those who have bought into a religion ..even any that have Jesus Christ’s name attached in order to gain some kind of credibility are not informed or aware OR they seek only to be told what they are comfortable with.

Yet we are given a testimony which will engage any who realize that they do NOT know Christ and are hungry and thirsty for HIM …not just the comfort zone of what we already think we know.

Mat 11:27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

The Word of GOD “REVEALS” who GOD is …praise God.

It is the WHOLE testimony of both the OLD and the NEW Testament that reveals to those WILLING to seek and search in them to learn about their Lover of our souls.

All of what GOD does is GOOD …but the World more and more has sought to rebrand ‘love’ with more and more defiled perspectives.

Knowing GOD is to KNOW Love in truth . IT is doctrine, or WHAT to believe..,it is reproof , when we have been lacking in understanding …and correction to ‘reboot ‘ our relationship and understanding ….and ALL of it is GOD BREATHED …out of the mouth of GOD which Jesus said we need to eat every day!

It is all …’instruction in righteousness that a man of God …a believer , need not to be ashamed , rightly dividing the word of truth and to be complete , thoroughly furnished unto all good works.[2 Tim 3:16,17,2 Tim 2:15]

I was under the impression from the past exposure to the doctrines of many other ‘religions’ , philosophies, and various things learned in the flesh that once in Christ I would be COMPLETELY knowledgable and never need to fear being deceived. That was a deception …but now I have been learning that we will be learning and being taught and given opportunities to witness our areas of need of growth and understanding from Christ through this life on into eternity.

How anyone who follows the Lord can become ‘bored’ is beyond me …but as we proceed to do the work of sharing the Word we are taught.

I think in giving out what we have been ‘given’ through His Word that acts ‘upon’ us that we are thus taught.

Someone once said that the dead sea is dead and nothing grows in it because it has no outlet.

We see this principle in all things that grow. So then fear not to keep on speaking and giving out what the Lord teaches you and you will find some who rejoice, some who receive , some who oppose and even some who only want to wrangle over things which are not useful …but GOD makes USE of ALL things when it is His child who is growing and learning .

Thus we do not need to be discouraged even if people we have loved and desired to see come to Christ do not demonstrate the kind of response we may have hoped for .

It is useful to remember sometimes that eventually some may come to Christ which we may be allowed to learn of …but all in all ….many times it is better that we do not ‘see’ them coming ….since it is God who is glorified …

Other times we ‘get to see’ them accept and truly walk after and grow ..whether it is ‘our’ sowing ….it is always Christ who brings about the new life .

This is something I sometimes struggle with as I want all to be saved …but I am NOT GOD! AWK! …..Just have to keep remembering that GOD is still …overall!

So dear sister…keep on keeping in Christ and in the Word and do the thing that is right in your path ..and God will make you faithful in many things…as you are faithful in the least .

Zeke September 20, 2014 at 9:46 am

Thank you for making this this. I am 16 years old and am struggling in living a christian life. Thank you sir for making this list and God bless.

Jack Wellman October 13, 2014 at 9:51 am

Thank you Zeke…when I wrote this, I myself was convicted by it and so your encouragement means a lot my friend.

Olukayode October 13, 2014 at 9:35 am

Encouraging and soul-lifting.

Jack Wellman October 13, 2014 at 9:52 am

Thank you so much my friend for your encouragement means a lot my friend.

Greg L Tegman November 7, 2014 at 6:47 pm

I am sliding study wise. I fear I may fall away. I am too afraid to fall away. Can you help me?

Jack Wellman November 7, 2014 at 7:58 pm

Thank you Mr. Tegman. The very fact that you are worried is good because it shows that the Holy Spirit is convicting you. No one can fall so far away that the blood of Christ cannot atone for. I would also talk with your pastor about this. These are only traits and not one of us live all 10 of these out perfectly, especially me! You are not alone in this. Living the Christian life is a constant struggle sir. Take heart. Here is an article that may help you feel better my friend. It’s called “How to Forgive Yourself: A Christian Commentary at: Let me know sir if it helps. I pray for you.

Brandon Hooks January 21, 2015 at 7:44 pm

Hi, brother Jack! I just want to be pleasing to God. I was just having alone time with God in prayer for close to 30 minutes yesterday, opening up my heart and talking to Him about some things. I do not believe the Spirit of God is in the church we attend. I want to feel conviction and be changed when I leave every Sunday. I just don’t feel it. No true altar calls, calls to repentance, etc. Nobody at the altar doing business with God. A few months ago, however, during the sermon Patrick did invite us to the prayer stations if we wanted. I got up while he was preaching, went to the side of the sanctuary, and knelt down at the prayer station confessing, and seeking forgiveness. Just having time with the Lord. I believe I may have been the only one. Secondly,

I do want to ask you this. Whenever I hear Gd or any other cuss word, and if I see something on tv or a magazine that is worldly I feel a stirring in me. A provoking. Sometimes almost a disgust. At times to the point where I have had to grit my teeth. Is that me just being oversensitive?

Jack Wellman January 22, 2015 at 10:31 am

Thank you Brandon. You want to feel conviction…and don’t feel changed when you leave Sunday? Let me say that the power is in the gospel or the Word of God (Rom 1:16; Isaiah 55:11) and not in sermons although use of the Word will help. I feel that when you hear sin and cussing and so on, and are disgusted, that is not being oversensitive…that is the Spirit of God showing you that its sin…it’s good to be sensitive to sin.

As far as altar calls…these are okay but there is nothing in the Bible that says we should go to the altar or make an altar call. Conviction and confession is typically done in private. I believe you are pleasing God Brandon…I am glad you are sensitive to sin.

Priscila Lopez June 18, 2015 at 12:25 am

Hello, I don’t know if you will respond or not but I will still write this comment. Ok so I am a Christian and I love Jesus and I have faith in Him, but I am struggling on reading the bible and praying to God every day. I really want to read my bible everyday but the problem is that my computer always distracts me with games and YouTube videos. And also I’m confused on how to spend my day, like what do I do? Pray and Read the whole day? And I know you might say to share the Gospel with other people but the problem on that is that I’m 12 years old and I live in an isolated area, plus my mom won’t let me out of the house. So my main questions here are how can I be exited to read the bible? And what can I do instead of playing and watching YouTube videos all day?

Thank you

Jack Wellman June 18, 2015 at 8:02 am

Reading the Bible and praying is not easy for anyone….so get a good Study Bible because it has good commentary and interesting fact about the Bible and what is behind the verses and chapters. I would also talk to your pastor about this. You just have to discipline yourself and do it. You make time to take a shower and brush your teach so you must do the same for God. Is Jesus more precious to you than Youtube? Maybe you can watch some good sermons on Youtube?

Katie Jackson February 5, 2016 at 9:12 pm

Hey Mr. Wellman, I also had fear about whether I am saved or not. I want a relationship with the Father. I want to spend the rest of my life with Him. I want to know Him more intimately. I don’t want to be in the world I want to live for Christ but I know I still struggle with sin. I know I have not been diligent in seeking the Lord and I felt guilt from that. I know I have fallen short and I do not want to continue in that sin because I know it hurts God and it hurts my relationship with Him. I want a relationship with the Father. I want to be with Him in eternity. I love Christians and when I treat them wrongly I feel guilty and I apologize to them because I know what I did is wrong. Please respond

Jack Wellman February 5, 2016 at 9:43 pm

Your humility is so good Katie. I am impressed by your transparency and really, we all fall short (Rom 3:23). Not too many will apologize and humble themselves before others in doing this so I see you as a breath of fresh air my friend. May God richly bless you. For all who repent and believe, they are the children of God!

Janet Bosley January 9, 2016 at 12:02 pm

Its written that He who began a good work in you will until the end .
Christians are not sinless because we are not perfect Only God is perfect .
In and of our selves (flesh ) we are not perfect , but He who lives within and redeemed our spirit [ not our flesh ] He made our spirit perfect because God does not give what is not perfect because its comes from Him and He is perfect.
We are not perfect ,but perfection is worked out in our flesh as we yield our flesh to the Holy Spirit within .. though our flesh will not be perfect ( sinless ) we will sin less and grow more in spiritually ..
Yeshua did not redeem our flesh, but our spirit ,not until the day of resurrection will we be perfect .. we are to yield to the Spirit of God ,not to our flesh God made a way of escape for us ,and He the Holy Spirit dwells within and He gives us escape from temptation.
What is born of the flesh ( sin) is flesh; What is born of the Spirit is spirit .– The spirit and the flesh wars one against the other – The flesh is weak but the Spirit is willing .
The flesh is sinful and desires the things of the world ,but the spirit desires the things of the Word.
When we yield to the flesh we fail , but to the Holy Spirit within we sail..
God communes with our spirit not our flesh.. satan communicates to our flesh ,but we have the helper and have away of escape we only need to yield to the Spirit not sinful flesh. Amen

Jon March 3, 2016 at 2:27 pm

From the context of 1 John 1 the word is talking about walking in darkness vs walking in light. If we keep with the context because the word truly has no chapters or verses, we can read verses 8 and 10 like this, 8 If we say that we have no sin (and walk in darkness), we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 10 If we say that we have not sinned (and walk in darkness), we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. We do NOT always sin and it is clear that in 1 John 1:9 that is we are willing to admit we were walking in darkness and confess it that He will cleanse us of ALL unrighteousness, and when one is cleansed of ALL unrighteousness he cannot be considered a sinner and he is at that time without sin because he is no longer walking in darkness. 1 John 2:1 says, “My little children, these things write I unto you, that YOU SIN NOT. And IF (not when) any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” Our relationship with the Father becomes so close that we would give up anything to preserve it and not damage it. Jesus did not die so you can go to heaven, He died so you can be reconciled back to the Father through a very close relationship which makes you holy and without blame by grace through faith in His word. The cross is not a constant reminder of my sin but a revelation of my value and the cost He was willing to pay to have me back in relationship. We should have no more consciousness of sin but only purity before the Father as Hebrews 10 explains. Grace is a greater power than sin and enables us to live above sin! Am I saying we will never sin? No. But sin should not be the main issue in a Christians life because the Holy Spirit leads and guides and convicts, we don’t “walk” in darkness or you could say a true believer cannot live in sin because it would drive him crazy. Walking in darkness is a lifestyle not a one time sin. God enables His children to live above sin by grace which is the power of God. Do you truly in your heart believe you are made righteous? That is the foundation to receiving grace. I am made righteous and I believe it, now my heart can put faith in the fact that I’m a son and can receive grace to act like one, its not by my own strength.
Romans 5:17, For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which RECEIVE abundance of grace and of the GIFT of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.
You have to receive grace to live above sin. If you are not getting alone with God every day in your secret place then more than likely you are in a huge struggle with sin because you cannot be transformed into the image of Christ if you dont spend time with Him and ask Him to show you truth and give you wisdom. Its a sacrifice of time but the benefits are AWESOME!

I’m Curious as to how to behave and approach JWs. I am married to one and her whole family is as well. Prayer for me to endure. Maybe some enlightenment could help. I am thoroughly convinced the Holy Spirit is in you!

Jack Wellman October 7, 2016 at 6:26 pm

Hello Daniel. Actually, you can witness to Muslims, atheists, agnostics, Mormons, and JW in the same way that Jesus and Paul did. Here’s how to do it my friend, and in the meantime, I am praying for them. Remember to not get into arguments. No one was every debated into heaven. I’d rather lose an argument and win a soul than win an argument and lose a soul.

Daniel October 19, 2016 at 6:34 pm

I came here seeking answers about myself, and most importantly my relationship with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
I was afraid I was not saved because of my sin, but God has a plan beyond what I was seeing in the moment. I gave in to sin, to temptations for a time, not for any reason except my weakness of self control.
During my sin, God did what he does for those he loves. He punished me, turned his head away when I pleaded for mercy, and allowed me to doubt and fear of my own accord. After a time, I am coming to realize God was not using this to take my salvation or show that I am unworthy of him (as true as that is).
Instead, in the days between then and now, I have gone to church more, taken more insight to loving others, prayed and read the bible more, I came to hate the sin which I had committed in weakness. And all this I did in my fear of God, in my fear that I had gone too far from his grace. No. Even as my sin corrupted me his grace was more.

In my fear of losing what I had, (my salvation) I instead found that I never really knew what that meant. I became a better person because of my misgivings, and sinful testing of the unholy waters of worldly things.

Truly it takes a great God to turn sin into righteousness, a child into a spiritual man, and a mistake of sin into the means by which I went to serve him better. I could spend hours getting into teary eyed detail, but I will wait until we are in heaven. Then my story of grace will join the eternal song of the angels and children of God. I will see you there, God’s grace providing. Amen, and well travels.

Wow… Great Work. God bless you dear servant of God for being so hard working and passionate to help fellow believers. It’s really good to know where am I in my walk with christ.

Grazia March 28, 2018 at 9:30 am

What if you were already born again and you have made a sin, do you have to be born again and again?

Jack Wellman March 28, 2018 at 10:05 am

Hello Grazia. The BIble tells us what to do when we sin (1 John 1:9) as we all sin (1 John 1:8, 10), so confess it and try to avoid the temptation to sin again. There is only one new birth just as there is only one physical birth, and God does not have still-borns.

Rachael May 20, 2018 at 7:25 pm

I know I’m not a good Christian but I’m building myself to be one and luckily I have a good foundation because my family is highly religious, but I have this big fear of me and my family going to hell, and it’s scary and believe this is a way of GOD telling me to buckle up, but is there a way to know how to hear GOD speak to you?

Jack Wellman May 20, 2018 at 8:51 pm

Thank you Rachael. I would call and speak with your pastor about this. Jesus was actually opposed to people that were “highly religious” because it is more about a relationship than a religion. If you have a fear, then you don’t understand enough about salvation. You need to sit under good Bible teaching/preaching, Sunday school and Bible study just like I do, so please call your pastor because we need one another (Heb 10:24-25) as we seek to do what Jesus commands us to do (Matt 25:34-39), as we doing it unto Him (Matt 25:40) or we do nothing for Him (Matt 25:41- and that’s not good (Matt 7:21-23). God speaks most clearly in the Word of God but good Bible teaching and preaching can help you understand more about the Word of God. Please read this called “4 Ways God Speaks to His People”

David April 9, 2019 at 10:21 am

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Old name: Mormons) and even though a lot of “Christians” do not consider us as Christians, we are and hold to the truths that are in this article. I was Born-Again on February 23rd, 1974 after a Youth for Christ Rally in Hiawatha, Kansas (Northeast Kansas) and I have followed Jesus all my life since that day including leading many to Him (soul winning). I know my name is in the Lamb’s Book of Life (mentioned in the Book of Revelation in the New Testament). I also know that the Book of Mormon is another Testament of Jesus Christ, that Joseph Smith was a modern-day prophet of God in the early 19th century, and that we have a prophet (President Nelson) of God who speaks the words of the Lord to His Church today. I know this in my heart and continually live for my Lord Jesus Christ and trust in Him for my life and salvation. Praise His Name!

Jack Wellman April 9, 2019 at 12:56 pm

Hello David. I wish it were so, but the Jesus you worship is not the Jesus of the Bible. He has always existed and as God is also and has always been omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient, so a “created” Jesus is not biblical. The Book of Mormon teaches that only fools say the Bible is sufficient and that other scripture is not needed (“Thou fool, that shall say: A Bible, we have got a Bible, and we need no more Bible.” (2 Nephi 29:6)). This dangerous sect I pray repents of this falsehood about Jesus and that we are all the children of God so please repent of this false religion David because if you don’t have the right Jesus, you don’t have the real Savior.

Samson Odutemu May 1, 2019 at 1:19 pm

Its possible for a true Christian to loose salvation! Its not just the teaching of some churches but the bible affirms it! Let us fear lest the hope of entering into his rest any of you should loose it

Jack Wellman May 1, 2019 at 1:50 pm

Friend, there are dozens and dozens of Scriptures that show God has sealed us unto the Day (Eph 1, Rom 8, John 10-11), so if you share the gospel, what do you say to them? You can be saved…if you hold on and dont’ blow it? What security is that? Please study this closer as you are saying that Jesus gives eternal life but this life is not eternal if it can be lost.

Marlie Hebert February 24, 2020 at 4:22 am

Who are TRUE Christians? Who are FALSE Christians? It has become so confusing, does even GOD know anymore?!

Jack Wellman February 24, 2020 at 9:04 am

Hello Marlie. Yes, God knows and we can know too. James 1:27, Matth 25:35-36,4-46, etc. can tell you. James chapter 2 is very clear about this too.

Thanks for sharing this awesome post Jack!
If you want to establish a more genuine and profound connection with God, you must first cultivate and possess the characteristics of a true Christian.

Marianna Albritton March 11, 2021 at 1:51 pm

It has given me a fresh perspective on this topic for my The Characteristics of a True Christian. Thanks!

Gordon October 30, 2021 at 5:52 pm

In Paul’s day, the Gospel was offensive because it was inclusive, loving, and raised up women and slaves. It gave hope of eternal life in exchange for fidelity to goodness. It gave dignity to man as being children of God.

Today, the Gospel is offensive because it is exclusionary, wrathful, demeans women and justifies slavery. It makes the threat of eternal torment for failure to adopt the right creeds. It makes all of man’s virtues worthless to God.

Jack Wellman October 30, 2021 at 6:35 pm

The New Testament shows us that women are co-heirs and co-equals before God and the teachings of Jesus lifted women up from the society at that time that demeaned and belittled women, treating them as property, much like the Islamic faith does today. The gospel offends but it also saves.
