17 Inspirational Bible Verses for Cancer Patients

by Pamela Rose Williams · Print Print · Email Email

Receiving the news that you have a terminal illness, such as cancer can be devastating. As believer’s we want to believe that God has a purpose in our affliction. We can look to the Bible for inspiration when we know someone who is suffering or we ourselves have been diagnosed with cancer. I pray these Bible verses will inspire you as you wait on the Lord for peace, courage, comfort and deliverance.

God is Big; Comfort & Rest for the Restless

Deuteronomy 31:6 “ …Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

Psalms 138:3 On the day I called, you answered me; my strength of soul you increased.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

Matthew 11:28-29 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

God is Faithful; Calm for the Anxious

Psalms 18:6 In my distress I called upon the Lord; to my God I cried for help. From his temple he heard my voice, and my cry to him reached his ears.

Psalms 33:20-22 Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name.  Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you.

Philippians 1:6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

Philippians 4:6-7 …do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 5:6-7 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

God is Trustworthy; He Has a Plan for You

Ecclesiastes 3:1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

John 14:1-3 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also…”

God is Hope; Even When it Seems Hopeless

Romans 8:16-17 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

Romans 8:24-25 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Romans 8:38-39 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 Peter 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

Very nice selection of verses Pam. How timely for so many with questions, doubts, and uncertainties about the future. I recently received Dr. Williams “King James Old English Word Definition Guide-3rd Edition Pocket Size” and find it quite helpful when I struggle with certain Old English terms in the King James Version. I was unaware of his informative website, http://www.Wisdom4Today.org, until I received my copy. Thank you for your wonderful writing on this site, and your ministry at Selah Mountain Ministries!

Pam January 18, 2012 at 4:55 pm

Thanks Jeff, I went to the Lord before I wrote that article. Terminal illness is such a difficult thing. I really wanted to point out the hope that we can have in Jesus — even in what seem to be hopeless times. I am so glad that you are finding the KJOEWDG helpful! The Wisdom4Today website has been a personal ministry tool of ours for quite a number of year, Dr. Mike recently revamped it will a newer tool and we are happy with the new front end. It is my good pleasure to write at WCWTK and serve in our ministry at in Albuquerque, NM. Thank you for taking the time to post your kind words I will be sure to encourage my husband with them too!

Thanks for these verses. I saw them awhile back but just recently sent them to a friend on Facebook 😉

Dianna Miller May 14, 2012 at 5:11 pm

I prayed for some Bible verses today that would comfort a friend (she does not have cancer) and this is where the lord brought me. Thank you for these lovely scripture verses!!!
I prayed for peace and inspiration and these are perfect.
My daughter and son have both been enduring a long season of testing that I pray will be coming to an end soon. My daughter Rachel has experienced many broken friendships that have left her heart so sad and she has a very serious neck injury that we are trying to find the answers and Gods guidance for. She has chronic pain that torments her daily, it breaks my heart!!! We are going back to the doctors again this week for help…nothing has helped in the past 10 months since it started.
My son Sean has also endured hardships for quite some time.
He has some strongholds in his life that he is struggling with and the enemy is trying to defeat him. He had his heart broken by a christian woman who devastated and used him for about a year and then cast him aside broken on so many levels. His job has been a real challenge too with a boss who
is holding out on deserved income.
Thank you for listening. If you have any pearls of wisdom to guide me as a mother who prays I would be so grateful.
Bless you and your ministry, Dianna

Pamela Rose Williams May 14, 2012 at 6:55 pm

Hi Dianna, I am so happy that these verses brought you comfort. “Pearls of wisdom” — just keep praying for your children I believe there is nothing more powerful than the prayers of a mother. You are doing good, keep it up!

It’s just difficult to look into my daughter’s hurting eyes. I wanted to thank you for these that will help the sleep to come! He is good and I find my strength in Him. These are reminders of His faithfulness. Thank you!

Eve March 6, 2013 at 8:42 am

Hi Pam:

These are wonderful and uplifting scriptures. My mother who is 92+ has had a remarkable and very full life. Until recently she has been active and sharp. She continues to fight for every additional moment in this world, but we siblings feel it is a matter of months before she leaves us. As we don’t live close to one another, I thought it would be nice to telephone her and leave 1 scripture per day for her to listen to. Something that is uplifting and positive about God’s promises for a future with him. If you have any other scriptures, it would be a blessing.

Thank you and bless you for your words of encouragement.

Pamela Rose Williams March 6, 2013 at 12:36 pm

Hello Eve, I have more scriptures for you dear, take a look at our collection which is sorted by topic:

You have inspired me with your story of how you are encouraging your Momma. Thank you for sharing.

Elna and Dick Liebenberg South Africa

Please everyone pray for God to heal my sister from aggressive malignant mesothelioma cancer and to heal and restore her husband from  damage caused by massive stroke that all happened in the beginning of April 2013, almost on the same day. The doctors has given Elna only a few months to live. Please pray for devine healing for Elna and Dick Liebenberg. Their lives have been ripped to pieces overnight.  Elna’s entire life was spend Sunday to Sunday to go to church to fetch her “spiritual food parcel” for the week ahead. Thank you for taking the time to read my request, but more importantly thank you for your prayers. Carina

Donald Wilcox October 2, 2014 at 5:51 am

Last night we got the news that out son (57) has stage 4 cancer.we prayed, & I tried to remember verses to read & rely on. I couldn’t find any.
This morning I thought to google. The Lord led me to you. I can’t. Stop crying &praising Him for His answer to my prayers. Thank you so much for your ministry.
Thankfully he &his wife belong to the Lord, & I know He’ll bring nh us all through thisvalley.

God bless you,

Don Wilcox March 12, 2015 at 12:04 pm

In Oct. whenour son was diagnosed, I searched for helpful scriptures, & was led to your website. Yesterday we got mixed progress & prognosis news. This morning in our devotions we cried out to God to help us through. The first thing I did after that was open this e-mail. Tears came once a gain, & I read it to my wife. I said God is answering tht very prayer. Her response? If not answering it, surely letting us know of His presence. Thank you again for your “annointed” ministry.

Pamela Rose Williams March 12, 2015 at 3:08 pm

All glory to God Don … we love hearing from our readers about how he uses this ministry to minister. Thank you for encouraging us to continue in this work. Please know that we are in prayer for your family.

Pamela Rose Williams June 30, 2015 at 10:23 am

Please excuse my delayed response Don. Know that I am praying for your family. How timely is God? Right?

Thank you.

Joe Smith January 19, 2015 at 11:58 am

My son Shane has cancer, and is currently in bad shape. Doctors have stopped treatment and told us to prepare for the end. But we are believing for a miracle. Romans 8:24-25 really speaks to me. A lot of the time we only believe in the things we can see. But I am believing in Shanes healing before it happens. You have to believe it to see it. Holding onto that hope and trusting in God to keep Shane with us.

Kevin Bakken March 11, 2015 at 11:32 pm

Please pray for me as I am having problems with my life, finances, assuring that I am cancer free after having a tumor removed from my chest also having a port put in my chest. By US standards I’m facing facing 16 rounds chemo which the 3rd round is happening Tuesday 13 will be left and I am a bundle of nerves and don’t want to do this but have to because most everyone wants me to. I need help figuring this out I am ADHD and Bi-polar and need many prayers and much peace of mind and spirit to make thru this next round. I wish I could afford alternative treatments but they are not covered by insurance. Alternative treatments are just as demanding but not as toxic. I pray for support and favor in this endeavor. I pray for gods guidance and seek his face (Psalms 27) and pray for his protection. Philippians 4 4-7 says not to be anxious (easier said than done). I look forward to your prayers of encouragement. In Jesus name Amen!!

Kevin Bakken April 6, 2015 at 3:43 pm

Pray for me this week. I have a blood draw on Monday and my round of A/C on Tuesday. Then I need to work on my mental health issues. I am having problems with my ADHD i need to go on medication to get control of it. My mind is going 10,000 miles per hour or more. I need help. I will have a two week break before my Taxol treatments start and that will be 12 weeks worth and I am not ready! I need medical with my ADHD and to continue counseling and to find some structure to my days. I was viewing 4 to 5 people on YouTube that have or are on Taxol so I know that there are some side effects but the days i am good I need to doing something other than sitting and watching t.v. o I need much prayers and support my last A/C and for my sanity!!! Gods Blessings to All!!! I appreciate the verses.

chi April 26, 2015 at 6:34 pm

Nancy Jeffers May 3, 2015 at 4:19 pm

Hi Pamela,

One of my friends’ sister has Stage 4 breast cancer that has spread. I don’t know here – not even her name – but these ladies are uniquely close, and my friend is doing everything she can to go through this with her sister.

I want to help in some way, so I went searching for uplifting quotes. I highlight ones I like, copy them over and spece them out in a Word document that I can print out. Using a paper cutter, I cut across inbetween the verses and end up with these tiny stips of paper that look similar to fortune cookies (depending on how long the verse and the author’s name is.) Then I just fold them up little, any which way, and make a special little sign that says “Read One A Day” or something. I place all these little strips in a fancy jar, a darling basket, or even a large Chinese Take Out Box – anything that I can decorate beautifully. This is my way of comforting someone in a quiet manner, and so far they have been received well.

Thanks you for your meaningful verses that will help my friends’ sister! I’m actually making twin gifts this time, with many, many verses so they will not run out) – so that these two sisters may open a verse each day together!

Pamela Rose Williams June 30, 2015 at 10:21 am

Lovely, lovely idea Nancy. Thank you for sharing, I am so encouraged by this. Blessings to you!

Renato Petonio December 9, 2016 at 2:22 pm

And through The Lord Jesus Christ we are offered salvation, in accepting it we are justified through Christ in the eyes of God. An offer that most of the world denies itself. In my darkest hour after my wife died Jesus sent me an undeniable sign that let me know she was safe in his memory. It was and shall always be the greatest blessing He could have through His mercy given me. All glory and honour to God through the Lord Jesus Christ. Always in my heart my love. x

I know a young man, named Jordan, who is only 19 years old and was just diagnosed with cancer. We live in a small, very close town; we have all band together and prayed and begged for the healing of Jordan. I have been looking for verses to help encourage him and his family and this is where I was led to. I ask for you and anybody else who reads this to please help us pray for our young friend. Jordan is headed to Texas this week to meet with doctors but the cancer is already in the bones, liver, and pretty much everywhere except the brain; we all know that doctors cannot do anything for him with out the help of God. He was baptized last week and he has so much faith that it is so inspiring to the whole town. We just ask for all the prayers we can get!

Jack Wellman April 15, 2017 at 8:31 pm

Prayers coming for Jordan.

God’s Word is so uplifting, right now my mother is staying with me fighting stage 4 lung cancer, she was diagnosed last summer, they (doctors) only gave her a few months to live and now over a year later she’s still with us and i thank Jesus for that all glory goes to him and right now her condition seems to be getting much worst, i found this site looking up what the bible says about being overwhelmed (very overwhelming) since my mom has been diagnosed last may of 2016 i started looking in the scriptures wanting to get closer to Jesus and know who he is better than i did before and what an awesome decision i’ve made by accepting what he done for me personally and is still doing even at times it feels im alone and i know everything works out for the good with God and it will, and i’ve enjoyed talking about him to my mom and sharing the gospels with her, i try to do what i can to be there for my mom but im so limited and plz pray for me and my mom and our family that the Lord will help us get through this, it’ll be very tough and has been, he has helped me and my mom all this time and am so greatful for that eventhough its so overwhelming and really dont like saying this but i cant give her the medical care she really needs, i do what i can, and really dont want to have her in hospice and i pray that Jesus will give me wisdom for what i should do, i know even in these circumstances he is still in control even when its hard trials and tribulations, and i know he will do what he knows is best for her and everyone else i have faith but i dont want to watch my mom take her last breath, and only God knows when our time is up, but at least he allowed her to remain here on earth with me and everyone else for over a year and possibly longer, only he knows i just ask that he helps me through all this and does what he knows is best for my mother and doesnt let her suffer.

MO July 25, 2017 at 2:37 am

I am so encouraged with the Word of God here and I thank God for Pamela and all the people that have sought God’s Word and comfort in their trials. Seeing the number of people – it is amazing and one realises that you are not alone. We are a family of God and let us pray for each other and trust God to come through for us. I had 4 family members suffering from cancer since Feb 2014, my brother in law – colon stage4, my brother prostrate cancer, my mother and my sister in law stage 4. My mother and sister in law have since gone to be with the Lord, my brother in law has had many operations in the liver and is now gravely lying in a hospital bed here in Kenya very sick – he has fought bravely and we still trust that God will have mercy and let him live. Kindly remember him his name is Jan and my brother’s name is Peter. Thank you and God bless you. Keep reminding God of his love, mercy and faithfulness.

Wayne August 2, 2017 at 12:05 pm

I Just Want to Thank you Pam I came to your site on the night of my moms Passing It comforted me it comforted her I think I’m forever changed God bless you and thank you again !

Pamela Rose Williams August 2, 2017 at 12:59 pm

Wayne, please accept my condolences on the passing of your Mom. I am happy to hear that you were blessed by God’s word and that it comforted the both of you. I have watched both of my parents pass from this earth and will forever be grateful to the Lord for the time that he allowed me to read the Psalms to my Daddy even when he was no longer even conscience. I was comforted most especially by Psalm 1, which pretty much sums up the man that my Dad was. You see in our ministry the Lord had my family and me far from my Dad as we ministered in several churches. My prayer was that when my Dad passed that I might be near to him. God blessed me so abundantly when He not only allowed me to be near, but allowed me to be with Dad that night, holding his hand while he drew his last breath. God is good, all the time! Even in our saddest hour. Dad has been with our Heavenly Father for several years and I look forward to the day when I see him again. Thank you for taking the time to share your kind words.

Wayne August 5, 2017 at 10:27 am

It occurs to me I didn’t really share my story with you I was sitting with my mom she had a look of fear in her eyes that I didn’t like I got up I started looking for some inspirational words it led me here now I find myself back here almost every day because when I was done reading to her she no longer look scared and she rested peacefully I will never have the words to thank you properly but know that you did truly help her and changed me forever thank you again ! I’ve had an eerie peace come over me and it’s with me still I seem to have found a new understanding .

Teresa Ruegge September 25, 2017 at 5:41 pm

Good directed me to your site right when I needed it. I got a call back for an ultrasound after my mammogram today. It is scheduled in one week. Good just healed me from this horrible disease in March of 2016. The mammogram indicated a mass but we are not sure at this point what it is until the ultrasound. Unlike the first diagnosis, the first thing I’m doing is falling to me knees, praying and opening God’s Word and Promises. The verses you shared give me great comfort and peace. I will hold onto these once again and know that my God has me wrapped in His loving arms and will comfort me. Thank you so much for sharing. Teresa

Hello everyone. I was doing some research and came across this site. Please pray for my husband Mike. We went to the doctor and his PSA is high. The doctor refer him to have a biopsy to rule out cancer.
I could see that he is afraid, but I know that God is a healer and we are standing on his word
