Famous Bible Verses: 27 Well Known Scriptures

by Daryl Evans on July 1, 2012 · Print Print · Email Email

I have been looking forward to writing this article for some time.  Famous Bible verses seemed like an easy task.  I began by starting with verses that are favorites to me.  I soon began to realize that my list would be way too long.  I compiled my list and then had to try to eliminate verses and thus I began an inner battle with myself and began saying, “How can I take that verse off the list?”  I begin this article telling you all this because there is no easy way to narrow the Scriptures down to a handful of verses.  All of God’s word is “profitable” (2 Tim. 3.16) for us.  With all that said, here are some verses that are popular and often quoted during sermons or Christian articles.

Foundational Bible Verses

Genesis 1:1  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Exodus 20:3-17 “You shall have no other gods before me.  “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.  You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,  but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.  “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.  “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days you shall labor, and do all your work,  but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.  For min six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.  “Honor your father and your mother, othat your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.  “You shall not murder.  “You shall not commit adultery.  “You shall not steal.  “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.  “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.  You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Famous Bible Verses

Psalm 23:4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Significant Psalm Verses

Psalm 23:1           The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Psalm 23:4           Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 46:10        “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”

Psalm 118:24       This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 119:11        I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

Famous Verses said by Jesus

Matthew 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Luke 11:9 And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Luke 11:10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.

John 3:16  “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Romans Road for Salvation

Romans 3:23 for fall have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 10:9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Romans 10:13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Other Famous Verses

1Corinthians 13:13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

2Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Some Bible verses seem to stand out when we hear or read them.  That is the beauty of the Word of God.  That is also why we need to be reading all of Scripture because it is God’s inspired, inerrant, and infallible word to us.  Maybe you have compiled your own list or have a favorite verse that I left off my list.  I encourage you to write your verse in the comment section and feel free to tell why that verse is important to you.

Daryl,
The words of the Bible are the words of God: powerful, comforting, encouraging. I can see why you struggled. It would be tempting to include the entire biblical text. God bless you.
Yours in Christ,
Robert

I prayed for you today Ian. We can never change our past but God tells us what we need to do about our past. First, confess our sin to God. This needs to be your first step. The Bible talks about this and uses the word repentance to show that we need to confess our sin and then to turn away from it. We will never be perfect and will continue to sin but true repentance is when we seek forgiveness for our sin and show the desire to not do it any more. I pray that God will restore you and that your faith can be strengthened through it.
Blessings,
Daryl

I find that Deuteronomy 4:29 helps me when I’m struggling.

“But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

It does not matter what your past contains. God knows all sins we have committed and will ever commit and still forgives us and loves us. This does not mean we should give up and sin anyway, but rather that He knows that we will falter. I prayed for you and wish you all the best.

Hi Amanda,

Thank You for praying for me when I need help from the Lord. Thank You for your comment. Things seem to be getting better, I am not as afraid as I was, I seem more peaceful in my Spirit, So the Prayers of Christians do work when they intercede for others. Pastor Daryl has also prayed for me as well as you, Thank You both for your help and encouragement.

May the Lord help you also in your daily life too.

Thank You Amanda

Ian God has not given you a spirit of fear but he comes to strengthen you in your weakness with His spiritual power that is available to you if you have the faith to receive it. The christian life is a walk of faith each day, but the beauty of it is that as time goes by we begin to understand more and more of God’s word as it slowly molds us and shapes us into the image of Jesus Christ. That’s why we need patience in order to persevere. Be strong and courageous and know that God loves you just the way you are.

Daryl,

Thanks for this list. I used it to add some passages to my personal “list”.

That said, I’ll give you one of my faves … Philippians 2:1-11 is a great passage!

Wow this is a great list! Thank you for putting this and keep it up!

For me, it is difficult to be close to God. I don’t have any friends who are serious about Christ and I am not from a Christian family. I am worried that my father will not accept Jesus. Also, I have no clue where I am going because I don’t know if I’ll be in university. Hopefully God will restore me.

My favourite verse is in Psalms. This might be because I often times do not get enough sleep:

It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late, to eat the bread of painful labors; for He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.

Hello all,
As I sit crying, I realized a life with God and Lord Jesus Christ is a life wasted. All the Inge I once cared so much about seem so trivial and frivolous. God Bless You All in your journeys!

Amen

Through Jesus Christ our heavenly father is reconciling us all back to the relationship we were always supposed to have with him. We were born into a fallen, sinful world but God has made a way for each and every person no matter where we’ve come from. The desire of his heart is that ” none should perish “. So be encouraged and quit looking at your circumstances and keep your eyes on Jesus through every trial and challenge that comes your way. God bless all that you do !

Hi Ian,

My name is Fanny, I am currently living in the UK with a friend of mine in search of a job and then getting a place of my own. I have applied for a lot of jobs but get one rejection after the other. I read some of the bible verses about strength yesterday.

I don’t want to be discourage but I do get like that sometimes could you please show me the best verse to fall back on when I am feeling down? Or an example of some one in the bible that faced a similar situation?

God bless you

Robert May 30, 2013 at 9:15 am

Hi Fanny,
This is one that I have memorized. It assures me that God is in control of my life, no matter how I feel or whether or not I understand what’s going on…I can trust Him. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV). Keep in mind though, that verses aren’t magic words, their power lies in God, and we appropriate that strength through our continued faith (trust) in Him. God bless you, Fanny.
Yours in Christ,
Robert

Hi,
I am just so lost in my walk with God. I am currently attending a bible holiness church and have been for a little over a year and I enjoy it. I don’t know if any will read this but I need pray and a lot of spiritual guidance. I have ditches a church service before because I knew if I stayed I would have been saved by God and I just hate myself for denying salvation time after time. I am so lost and I have no idea why I am so scared to become a saved Christian but at the same time I want it. If you could just pray for me whoever reads this I sould greatly appreciate it.
- sincerely,
Brian

I have prayed for you today Brian. I pray that you will give your heart and life over to God. It sounds as if you are fearful to do that for some reason that Satan is putting in your mind. There is nothing like being in the family of God. God calls us (his followers) adopted children. Which is so amazing in the fact that God chooses us to be part of His family even though we sin and even though we disobey Him. Yet He still calls out to us and desires that we come to Him. He is an amazing God and I hope and pray that you come to know that.

“The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. I will carry out great vengeance on them and punish them in my wrath. Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I take vengeance on them.”

Thank for posting these verses from the Bible, they are good to read again and to think about them in depth and apply them to my life. I also made sure to pray for all of those who asked for prayer in the comments above. Stay strong and know that God says that he will never give you more than you can bare in your life. I do not know the exact phrasing or verse name and number for that one, sadly, but it’s in there. God bless all of you and most especially his children who have lost their way or have not found the Lord yet.

And have a very Merry Christmas! This is one place where I hope I never have to read “Happy Holidays”, as a sad, sad, substitution for the only reason for the season, our Lord’s Birthday, Christmas. I have to continually ask God to give me strength when I hear or see people, especially secular progressives, attempting to diminish or eradicate Christmas from society, public view and conscieniousness. I think we need more outspoken Christians who will stand strong and fight back against these secular progressives and others who attempt to remove all things God from our country, our country that has only flourished and was built by the wisdom and strength of the Holy Lord. The day that we stop fighting these evil people, is the day that our nation truly falls apart for good.

The reason that I clicked on this list, is because I was wanting the exact verse for the one that says something to the effect of – all it takes for evil to prosper, is for good men (and something else??), to do nothing. I don’t know it very accurately as you can tell, I am sure. But that was the gist of it, you hear it quoted constantly, and many times I hear it attributed to someone or something other than the Holy Bible, and I really wanted to know the verse name and number. So, if anyone would please help me out with that verse, I would appreciate it very much and I thank you in advance. Thanks and God bless you all.
