Famous Bible Verses: 27 Well Known Scriptures

by Daryl Evans · Print Print · Email Email

I have been looking forward to writing this article for some time.  Famous Bible verses seemed like an easy task.  I began by starting with verses that are favorites to me.  I soon began to realize that my list would be way too long.  I compiled my list and then had to try to eliminate verses and thus I began an inner battle with myself and began saying, “How can I take that verse off the list?”  I begin this article telling you all this because there is no easy way to narrow the Scriptures down to a handful of verses.  All of God’s word is “profitable” (2 Tim. 3.16) for us.  With all that said, here are some verses that are popular and often quoted during sermons or Christian articles.

Foundational Bible Verses

Genesis 1:1  In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

Exodus 20:3-17 “You shall have no other gods before me.  “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.  You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me,  but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.  “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.  “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days you shall labor, and do all your work,  but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.  For min six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.  “Honor your father and your mother, othat your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.  “You shall not murder.  “You shall not commit adultery.  “You shall not steal.  “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.  “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”

Deuteronomy 6:4-5 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.  You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Some Bible verses seem to stand out when we hear or read them.  That is the beauty of the Word of God.  That is also why we need to be reading all of Scripture because it is God’s inspired, inerrant, and infallible word to us.  Maybe you have compiled your own list or have a favorite verse that I left off my list.  I encourage you to write your verse in the comment section and feel free to tell why that verse is important to you.
