Can People Communicate With the Dead? A Christian Perspective

by Jack Wellman · Print Print · Email Email

Can we communicate with the dead?  Is this possible according to the Bible?  Should Christians be trying to communicate with the dead?

Communicating with the Dead

I have heard about the many that portend to be able to communicate with the dead.  They hold séances and try to get in touch with the deceased in order to have their family or friends communicate with them.  They desire to ask them a question, see what’s on the other side, where they are at, and so forth.  The fact is that if they indeed do communicate with anyone in the spirit world, it is an evil spirit for the Bible states thatthe living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten (Eccl 9:5). Further, Solomon says, Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom (Eccl 9:10).  Even Isaiah records about the deceased that, They are now dead, they live no more; those departed spirits do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin; you wiped out all memory of them (Isaiah 26:14).

It is not wise for believers or unbelievers to try and communicate with the dead.  For one thing, the one that they are trying to call back from the dead may not be who they think it is.  There is a spiritual world out there full of demons who are fallen angels that chose to rebel with Satan and they love to mimic the deceased in order to have people fall into the trap of thinking that they are communicating with the dead.  This is truly dangerous territory for anyone to venture into and it is sin for unbelievers and for believers.

Saul Communicates with the Dead

In Deuteronomy 18:10-11 it says, Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.” The punishment for this in the Old Testament was death because this is territory that humans have no business being in.  When Saul, being fiercely outnumbered by the Philistines, went to a medium at Endor, he asks the medium to call back Samuel for advice.  Here is the account in 1 Samuel 28:11-12 where the medium asked Saul,Whom shall I bring up for you?” “Bring up Samuel,” he said. When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!  Here we note that the medium was terrified because she actually saw Samuel called up and knew that he was dead.  The medium was shocked because she had likely never done this before and here was an actual person being called up from the dead – to her utter amazement and terror.

Then, Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”  Samuel said, “Why do you consult me, now that the Lord has departed from you and become your enemy? The Lord has done what he predicted through me. The Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today.  The Lord will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.” Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of Samuel’s words. His strength was gone, for he had eaten nothing all that day and all that night. When the woman came to Saul and saw that he was greatly shaken, she said, “Look, your servant has obeyed you. I took my life in my hands and did what you told me to do (1 Sam 28:15-21).

Notice that when the only time recorded in the Bible where someone actually did come back from the dead, it was to announce the death of the one who sought this (Saul).  The woman was terrified and she feared for her life, knowing that this was punishable by death at that time.  I believe this was the only exception because Saul was being disobedient and God had declared that David would be king years before.  Nothing good came out of this experience for Saul and the same could be said for anyone who tries to repeat such a thing as Saul did.

Can people communicate with the Dead

The Bible is clear that believers or unbelievers should not be consulting mediums, psychics, and witches.

The Bible on Consulting Mediums, Witches, Astrology’s and Psychics

The Bible is clear that believers or unbelievers should not be consulting mediums, psychics, and witches.  God alone is sovereign over the future and we have no business trying to know it.  No good thing will ever come from trying to do this.  In fact, it is a mystery to me why Christians read their horoscope to see what their day will be like when there is absolutely no evidence that using the stars to read the future works.  Worse than that, it is clearly sin.  Even Ouija boards are considered sin, even though most Christians may not see the harm.

The Bible has much to say about consulting with mediums, witches or psychics.

Isaiah 8:19When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?
Leviticus 19:31 “’Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.”

Leviticus 20:6I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people.”

2 Kings 21:6He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced sorcery and divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger.”

Isaiah 19:3The Egyptians will lose heart, and I will bring their plans to nothing; they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, the mediums and the spiritists.”

Isaiah 47:13All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you.”

Jeremiah 27:9So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums or your sorcerers who tell you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.”

Micah 5:12I will destroy your witchcraft and you will no longer cast spells.”

We have seen that the dead can not communicate with the living (Isaiah 26:14), that consulting mediums, witches, astrology’s, and psychics is sin (Duet 18:10-11), that such spiritists will be cut off from God forever (Lev 20:6), and that it all comes to nothing anyway (Isaiah 19:3).  God’s face is against anyone that tries to communicate with the dead, or consults mediums, psychics, witches, astrologers, and any kind of spiritist.  If you communicate with someone from the dead, it is not who you think it is.  Besides, once someone dies, they can not cross over again to the living (Luke 16:26).  Since fallen angels (demons) have lived for thousands of years, they know the traits and tendencies of deceased family members and can appear to sound like or look like those who are deceased.  It is dangerous for anyone to even try.  Once a person dies they are in only one of two places.  In torment and separated from God or with the Lord in a state of bliss.  In either place that soul will live forever.  It will be either in agony and regret or in joy and happiness…both will be forever.  Decide today where you will go after you die.  By placing your trust in Jesus Christ, I can assure you that it is a decision you will eternally live to never regret.

Great job again Jack. I had a Sunday school teacher who told us about when she was an unbeliever and used a Ouija board. What she saw really scared her when she used it. She went out and burned it. The next day, the Ouija board was whole again in her closet. You are completely accurate in what you have said. No one has business communicating with the realm of the dead. Demons are way stronger then anyone who takes them on in this matter. Once my teacher gave her life to God and repented, all of the demonic activity stopped. Thank you for your insight through the word on this matter. It was well written sir. God bless!

In His Name Always,

Thank you so kindly Derek. I agree with what you said…we are playing with fire when we are messing with the dark forces of fallen demons and its just not worth it. I used to read my horoscope but when I realized the source if it, it became a “horror-scope” and I have never messed with it again.

Michael August 5, 2012 at 11:10 am

Yet another great article. I used to check my horoscope every day until I finally found God. Now I know my future is in his hands and trust that he knows what he’s doing with my life.

Jack Wellman August 5, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Thank you Michael. I appreciate it. I was like you and used to check my horoscope and since God saved me and I placed my trust in Christ, I check the Bible and rely on it to know the future. I like what you said that we can place our future in His hands and trust in God.

This is one of the best articles I have ever read on explaining why it is not good to consult the dead. So very clear. thank you for this article

Jack Wellman August 5, 2012 at 2:41 pm

Thank you so much Ellen. I remember when I was young playing with a Ouija board game and it scarred my sister and know that I look back, I shudder to think what I was doing. Please come back again soon my friend.

I am a christian and have heard and seen things from the dead since I was a child. It is usually a warning telling me that something will happen that is not good. I then tell the person and either it happens or they avoid it. Cannot believe this is bad, have kept some from being killed or killing themselves. I never seek for the dead or whoever does to contact me it just happens. I have never asked for any payment for this and was warned in a dream never to ask for anything when telling someone.

Jack Wellman August 5, 2012 at 6:00 pm

Thank you Judy for your comment. I am concerned about your post. Do you hear audible voices from the dead? Are they people you know? Are they deceased relatives? You received warnings that kept others from being killed or killing themselves? Are you certain that these are not angels or that they might be demons who, the Bible teaches, can appear or act as “angels of light” and can imitate deceased people closely since they knew the dead. Are the voices a whisper and accompanied by spirit-like bodies? I see that they are communicating to you and you are not soliciting them to speak or come to you. Whether you believe it is not bad is not the issue but if they are coming to you and not you to them is a different issue. The Bible says that the dead can not cross back over to life (see above Scriptures) so I just was wondering if you had more on these experiences. I am not saying that these are bad…but this article referenced Bible verses and are not my own opinion. Have you told your pastor or priest?

Robert Driskell August 5, 2012 at 7:38 pm

Jack, my boss would disagree with you on this, every Monday morning he would swear he’s communicating with the dead when he’s talking to me (just a bit of humor). Seriously though, it seems that, aside from the danger inherent in speaking to unidentified disembodied spirits, the problem with seeking this type of communication reveals that we are not fully trusting God with our lives. Jack, you showed clearly where the Bible forbids this type of communication. Therefore, it can’t be right to do it. I have heard other claims that the spirits are helpful, etc. But they will only be helpful long enough to gain a person’s trust and allegiance. If I a demon came right out and said, “I’m a demon, follow me”, not many would fall for that. These ‘spirits’ want to appear good, so that good people will be deceived into following them. As you said Jack, they can appear as angels of light. Anyway, the safest thing to do is to trust God with all your heart, soul, mind, body, and strength. He will protect us and lead us from this, or any other, type of deception.
Hey, great article, by the way. As you can tell, it really got me thinking.
God bless you brother.
Yours in Christ,

Jack Wellman August 5, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Thank you so kindly Robert. I agree so much with the Monday morning bit and that applies to me as well. As you said, these spirits don’t come out and tell you who they are but I have had other people tell me these same things and that they believe that they are sincere and yet, so are many who are even behind the pulpits today. I will not name them, but they are preaching a little bit of the gospel with a little bit of deception and though they appear as being right, they are deceiving others by mixing truth with error. I appreciate you, as always my friend.

too funny Robert I had to laugh out loud

Allan August 5, 2012 at 11:48 pm

Hi Jack,

Great job again! I also remember my sister telling me, before she used to study palmistry and every time she is reading one’s palm, there is someone muttering to her ears. She usually had goosebumps and now she is no longer doing it. She is a renewed Christian now. Thanks again!

Jack Wellman August 6, 2012 at 4:22 pm

Allan my friend. You must be related to Barnabas…always the encourager and son or brother (to me) of consolation. God bless you friend. Awesome news of your sister and I get to meet her…and YOU someday.

Excellent! What a great reference to have all this Scripture in one place (well, other than the back pages of my Bible where I scribble notes when I find things). Jack you did a great job on this one and once again God is glorified!

Jack Wellman August 6, 2012 at 7:56 pm

Thank you Pam..more evidence that God uses the weak, frail, feeble, and base things and yes, even train wrecks, all of these being me, that glorifies HIS name alone. Thanks friend.

Chris Martel August 10, 2012 at 12:27 pm

What comes to mind is a series of books I read in the late 70’s called “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant”, in that story a high lord used the staff of life to bring a dead hero from the past to life to seek advice, boy was that a mistake! With the words “You Fool!!!!” the dead hero roared, “you have violated ALL the laws of the land, now there will be no holding back the evil one”, or words to that effect. The point? Not even Fantasy writers want to touch that issue, and if they do, People are the worse for it. Keeping that in mind I have heard of friends who used Quija Boards and had some rather bad results. The bottom line, unless you want to open yourself to demons, it would be wise to let the dead lie. As Jack pointed out there are demons who look for this opening and they WILL avail themselves of your INVITATION to enter. Once the invitation is given any number of bad spirits will begin to show up, often times with disastorous results for the poor sod who summoned them. Speak to the dead? Absolutely, incontrovertibly, immutably NOT!!

Steven August 10, 2012 at 8:08 pm

Illicit communication with “the dead” is a great example of the spiritual war that rages on unnoticed by the world. Jesus told the rich man that no one is good but God. I would suppose that Jesus meant spiritual beings as well as physical ones when He said that.

The point is, any demon or fallen will do anything to molest God’s creation.

Rossa August 13, 2012 at 4:38 am

Well done Jack and thank you, i have bean asking myself questions around the topic, you just answared me very well.
God bless!!

Mr A Cotton August 19, 2012 at 2:51 pm

Jesus sums it up when he was outside His tomb, and said “Why do look for the living amongst the dead.”

Jack Wellman August 19, 2012 at 2:57 pm

Amazing insight sir. Wow. I wish I had noticed that verse when putting together this article. Excellent point and one that I truly missed. You certainly have great insight sir.

Had a sunday school student ask for a lesson on using the ouiji board, and since we have had a lot of people move into our small town who claim to be in touch with spirits I though it a very important subject to use. Couldn’t really find a lesson that fit the bill, until now — thanks so much for the great article!

Recently, I was watching the Ricky Lake show. She had a psychic and a person who communiated with the dead. People who had lost loved ones who disappeared wanted to know if their loved one was dead. One person received a message that the psychic did not sense that their loved one was dead after 18 years. Only that the circumstances were such that the mother thought it best if she did not return in addition to the fact that she was held hostage to prevent her from revealing a murder of a friend. I listened, and I thought that perhaps these are familliar spirits. Yet, Jesus said that if we believe in Him we will not die. My aunt lost a son to sudden impact. She is a christian as am I. She said that her son appeared to her as she lay on his bed in their home and said “I’m okay mom. I’m alright.” This was the gist of most of the Ricky Lake show that these people needed to be comforted. I think mediums may be at risk, because they communicate continually. Perhaps, my aunt saw her son’s angel, and he was comforting her so that she could get through the grieving process. I never met my grand mother she died before I was born, and sometimes, I want to know the circumstances of her passing, and any word that she would leave to me as her grand child and my mother, as I believe my mom did not even get to say goodbye to her.

Jack Wellman March 15, 2013 at 10:28 am

Thank you Victoria for your comment. I agree that mediums are at high risk because they are messing with things they know not and they can easily be overtaken by an evil spirit, plus they will face the wrath of God someday for God says that trying to communicate with the dead is an abomination to him. Perhaps this article will help called “Will We Recognize Friends and Family in Heaven” at this link:

nixon May 5, 2013 at 1:25 am

If I were Jewish I would be inclined to take a few quotes from the Hebrew Scriptures more literally. I am, however, Christian and my entires religion is based on a reality that is not necessarily visible. Communicating with non-physical reality is really what is at issue here – and if you don’t beleive you can do that then you wipe out Christianity. If the pupose of this article is to discourage people from spending money on prediction about the future then fine, otherwise it’s a home goal in every sense for Christianity.

Jean May 10, 2013 at 11:48 pm

Thank you so much for writing this message. I really needed to hear this. Thank you so very much…

Vicki Conway May 21, 2013 at 2:56 pm

Have you ever lost a loved one dear to your heart, like a son or a daughter? The need to know that he/she is okay and that their soul lives on could be overwhelming at times. If mediums can help by relieving the extreme sorrow and by helping dress the gaping wound, what wrong is it? The emotion of love is a gift from God in the first place.

Jack Wellman May 22, 2013 at 3:34 pm

Thank you Mrs. Conway for your comment. Yes, I have lost loved ones and if we love God we obey Him and He tells us to not communicate with the dead as it clearly says in dozens of places, like mentioned in this article, that it is sin. No where in the Bible does it say we should communicate with the dead. Mediums are an abomination to God and they will be judged by Him and to tamper with such evil spirits is very, very dangerous ground to be walking on, I must warn you. The “emotion of love” is not a gift of God but His grace to save us and to repent of what He condemns, like communicating with the dead.

krish July 15, 2013 at 10:53 pm

Hi there. My wife communicate with her decease sister and she can tell us things that only certain people knew. My wife is Christian but she belives that god allows her sister to talk to her from a requested prayers she did before.

Im so confused and I really dont know what to do to convice her.

Thanks for helping

Jack Wellman July 16, 2013 at 8:55 am

Hello Krish. You must warn your wife. Tell your pastor about this. What has he said? This is very serious. Print this out or send her this link or go over the Scriptures mentioned in this article for God will not leave unpunished those who do such things. Is your wife a Christian? Is she saved? She may not be for Christians know that this is sin. Show her this article, pray for her, tell your pastor what to do. Does she go to church with you or do you go yourself? Act today for if she dies in this state, no promise of her not going to hell is sure. We are commanded to not communicate to the dead or pray to the dead. There is no gray area. Warn her today.

krish July 20, 2013 at 7:02 pm

Thanks for replying, my wife and I dont go to church because we work on sunday and this is the only day our church operates. She get revelation for hours and tell her other sister what happened and whats going to happen like she can predict the future as well.

Her sister and my wife herself believe that their deceased sister is showing them things and comunicate.

Also the deceased sister have a little son where he always say mummy come to visit me every night and describes that she got wings and bright.

My wife told me that she sees things in her head and hear voices. The freaky part is they are not fake they 100% real vision.

Jack Wellman July 20, 2013 at 7:39 pm

I can not believe that your wife reads the Bible or prays, does she? You seem to be concerned that this is sin and so this makes me think you want to obey God and do the right thing. If your wife claims to be a Christian, then she should be in submission to you as you are her husband and can ask her to stop this (Eph 5). If she doesn’t submit to your request to stop this, then she is no Christian according to what Christian wives are supposed to be like.

As for your wife seeing these things and being 100% real, then what she is really seeing are demons who are taking the form of her deceased relatives. There is no other way possible, according to the Bible, which is true, that these are deceased persons for once the dead are passed away, they can not come back from there as the book of Hebrews says, ” it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Heb 9:27). Men and women die…once, and then, they are judged so since, as the Bible says, that they are judged after death, they can not come back from being either in heaven or hell. These are facts…and I hate to say this but your wife is deceived and is playing with fire.

Beverly September 23, 2013 at 8:38 pm

If the dead cannot cross back and communicate with the living, then how are the demons able to communicate with the living by taking the form of a deceased loved one. The demons and or fallen angels are also dead. Correct?

Jack Wellman September 23, 2013 at 10:34 pm

Thank you Beverly. Yes, the dead can not cross back and communicate with the living but the dead mentioned in this article are the deceased humans. Demons are alive and spirit and spirit can not ever die and even then, when they are finally cast into the lake of fire, they will still be alive but only in eternal torment. No, the demons or fallen angels are not dead but are still alive and forever more will be (Rev 20).

Richard Rahme November 2, 2013 at 10:06 am

My wife and I are seperating. We have twins(5yrs -boys)and an 11yr old daughter. She is moving in with him the new boyfriend with the children.
He is a medium or spiritualist – whatever they call themselves – who also has a website and does it as a business.

I have tried to warn her of what she is getting herself into and what the children are going to be exposed to. She won’t listen.

I am a person totally trusting in God pray and read the bible everyday without fail.

I desperately need help please.

Jack Wellman November 2, 2013 at 4:44 pm

Thank you Mr. Rahme for your comment. Actually this is very serious as you noted. I would even go so far as to print this out and mail it to her. God also predicts the future but this always comes to pass. Ask them if they really want to know the powers of God Who predicts their future with razor precision as in Rev 20:11-15.

The Bible strongly condemns spiritism, mediums, the occult, and psychics (Leviticus 20:27; Deuteronomy 18:10-13). Horoscopes, tarot cards, astrology, fortune tellers, palm readings, and séances fall into this category as well. These practices are based on the concept that there are gods, spirits, or deceased loved ones that can give advice and guidance. These “gods” or “spirits” are demons (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). The Bible gives us no reason to believe that deceased loved ones can contact us. If they were believers, they are in heaven enjoying the most wonderful place imaginable in fellowship with a loving God. If they were not believers, they are in hell, suffering the un-ending torment for rejecting God’s love and rebelling against Him.

So, if our loved ones cannot contact us, how do mediums, spiritists, and psychics get such accurate information? There have been many exposures of psychics as frauds. It has been proven that psychics can gain immense amounts of information on someone through ordinary means. Sometimes by just using a telephone number through caller ID and an internet search, a psychic can get names, addresses, dates of birth, dates of marriage, family members, etc. However, it is undeniable that psychics sometimes know things that should be impossible for them to know. Where do they get this information? The answer is from Satan and his demons. “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve” (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). Acts 16:16-18 describes a fortune teller who was able to predict the future until the apostle Paul rebuked a demon out of her.

Satan pretends to be kind and helpful. He tries to appear as something good. Satan and his demons will give a psychic information about a person in order to get that person hooked into spiritism, something that God forbids. It appears innocent at first, but soon people can find themselves addicted to psychics and unwittingly allow Satan to control and destroy their lives. Peter proclaimed, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). In some cases, the psychics themselves are deceived, not knowing the true source of the information they receive. Whatever the case and wherever the source of the information, nothing connected to spiritism, witchcraft, or astrology is a godly means of discovering information. How does God want us to discern His will for our life? God’s plan is simple, yet powerful and effective: study the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16-17) and pray for wisdom (James 1:5).

All you can really do at this point is mail this article to them and copy and paste my comments here and also forward this email and the link to it AND mail it using U.S. Mail by certified letter to make sure they get it. Otherwise, this satan stronghold can only be broken by the power of God alone. Let’s pray together and ask others to join with us sir.

Michael November 2, 2013 at 5:59 pm

praying with you on this one.

Jack Wellman November 2, 2013 at 6:01 pm

Wow…you really encouraged me Michael and I would image you have also encouraged Mr. Rahme. Thank you Michael for your heart for the lost and Mr. Rahme’s wife is so lost right now. I thank God for you sir.

Debbie June 10, 2014 at 7:58 pm

I’d like some further insight on all this. I, too, since childhood, have experienced what I would call more intuition then speaking to the dead or hearing from them. I sometimes sense my deceased father around me when I am in need of comfort. I dreamed my mother’s bad car accident, as it happened, when I was 10. I didn’t ask for the dream. She survived the accident, so it wasn’t dead coming to me or me summonsing them. I have sensed alot of things that were going to happen. I don’t use these things in anyway and most of the time I don’t pay attention to my gut feelings as much as I probably should. It’s usually after the fact that I realize. When I was a single parent my daughter & I would answer each other without speaking prior. I once sensed her ill in daycare while I was at work. I heard her call out for me. I was at a wedding on the beach a few weeks ago. The bride wanted her deceased dad to be there. They do believe in communicating with loved ones that have passed. Especially her aunt. A bar swallow swooped in, I immediately thought of her dad & her aunt turned to me & shook her head yes as if an acknowledgement it was him. I thought it odd, I don’t believe in this, but thought the very thing she did. How do you explain things like this? Doesn’t God understand in any way that sometimes it isn’t people asking this to happen to them or they are only wanting to seek comfort to feel their loved ones are spiritually with them? Not that they are communicating but being watched over in angel form? Please explain as I want to be sure I am living in God’s desires, but I can’t help that I have high intuitions either or that things just come to me.

Jack Wellman June 10, 2014 at 8:17 pm

Thank you Debbie for your comment and question. As for your dream about your mom’s accident, dreams are just so random that we cannot put any real value in them and most often they are just coincidences. The Bible is my source for truth so what I believe doesn’t matter. We all have intuitions, this is nothing strange. I don’t see you have done anything wrong or sinned so God does understand and know your heart. We also have “gut feelings” too and these can come true because of our experiences in life have taught us things that we feel may happened do happen.

As for her aunt and a swallow swooping in, there is no way to know if that means anything o there is no way I could explain that but my sister lives on a farm and swallows fly into her house frequently. I cannot see God using a swallow to indicate that a lost loved one was “at the wedding” for God does not ever do such things. But as for they believing in communicating with the dead, they really aren’t communicating with the dead but with demons who are familiar with that lost family member or friend. I as saddedned that they believe in communicating with loved ones but glad you do not and do not get involved in this. The Bible forbids communicating with “familiar spirits” and they are called familiar spirits because demons can mimmick or imitate deceased family members and friends. Again, we all get intuitions but that doesn’t mean we have a gift or special ability from God. There are no such occurences in the Bible like that. Even so, you have not sinned in any way.

I read this in search to see if what I saw on long island medium was true but with the advancement of technology and schemers I had many doubts so one day I had a feeling of seeing the lady myself without giving away information of my life to see if that was the truth. but the idea of devils acting like the dead is so scary. would my intentions of seeing the psychic still a sin ?

– I’m a Christian and I have told my father he doesn’t believe it either but didn’t say anything about visiting to confirm was wrong

Jack Wellman August 30, 2015 at 4:49 pm

Hello Hyde. I would stay far away from any mediums as these are clearly sin and God is not pleased. Why do you want to seek such information?

Jerry F September 26, 2015 at 5:03 pm

I want to thank all those people who are not closed minded, and think that all this is hog wash, or the devil’s doing. I believe there are people who can communicate. I have studied many cases of NDE’s (Near death experiences)…that is where people have actually died, but are brought back to life to tell what they have experienced. They are actually clinical cases by doctors etc. I think time will tell. I have never personally heard from anyone on the other side;however i do believe it happens. It has happened to many of my friends. So keep an open mind, and it is not necessarily evil. I’m sure there are some people who are, and are just out to make a buck. You decide.

Thomas tom December 9, 2015 at 7:49 pm

thanks for the article I found it interesting. I’m a 41 year old male, was raised Roman Catholic, none practicing. I believe in God, just don’t follow any religion suggestions directly. my whole life, I was nearly atheist. But as I got older, especially during dreams. I always felt I was able communicate with the dead. So after those experiences, I determined that God just sends me reminders that there is bigger things out there then I understand. what I just wrote is a little bit on the consolidated side, but I hope you get the idea. Thanks again for the article..

minford February 16, 2016 at 2:00 am

thank you very much servant of the Most High “Jack” your article its a great eye opener to many , and its a pity that many people who are calling themselves Christians are involved in consulting with the dead in seeking for help or guidance, its now clear to me .But I have a question ,my question is this ,”what about those people who lost their loved ones ,who keep on posting the pictures of them on Facebook , and other social media, stating that they still love them ,they are still in their heart” is that not a part of consulting the dead?

Jack Wellman February 16, 2016 at 9:22 am

I see your point Minford about posting pictures of those who have already passed away but I don’t think that’s communicating with the dead by still stating to others their love for their lost one. The context of the article is trying to communicate with the dead, not speak of their lost loved ones in a way that shows others their love for them. The social media postings are not about trying to communicate with the dead but about communicating to others just how much they mean to them. Does this make sense Minford? Thank you.

Lori May 20, 2016 at 10:48 pm

WOW Jack. Thank you for this article. I recently had a friend who is a Christian ask me how I felt about the fact that her son said he speaks to the dead. I told her the Bible clearly warns that this is not of God but your article shows me all the scriptural references for me to share this with her. I already copied it and sent it to her. I’m also going to begin reading your posts as you are clearly being used by God to help the children of God. Thanks again!

Jack Wellman May 21, 2016 at 11:16 am

Thank you Lori. Sadly, some Christians still seek their deceased family members and this is clearly sin. That’s why the call them “familiar spirits” as they’re familiar with our family members who die and try to imitate them to make others think it is them. It’s a tool of the Devil. Thank you for your encouragement Lori.

Bubu May 22, 2016 at 9:45 am

I want to talk to my. I want to communicate with my husband’s soul. I always feel a pain in my hart. Please feel my pain and tell me the prosses how I communicate with my husband. Please.

Jack Wellman May 22, 2016 at 12:42 pm

You cannot speak with the dead. God forbids it. If he is saved you will see him again. I cannot tell you how to communicate with your husband if God’s Word says don’t. I am sorry.

Elizabeth Hixon July 8, 2016 at 9:42 am

I am confused a little also. I think seeking out spirits is wrong also for selfish reasons but I have lost a brother and my mother and there has been times I have felt them near and so comforted. I also feel like I have been guided by the Holy Spirit on matters and have heard a voice reason with me on personal growth and understanding that I felt was the Savior or the Holy Spirit-never about anything that is none of my business but instruction that later I found out was totally scripturally sound. I pray I am never falsely led by a demon. Are you saying to never go after the spirit world but allow them to come to us perhaps and use discernment which is a spiritual gift to know who the communication is really from?

Jack Wellman July 8, 2016 at 9:53 am

Thank you Elizabeth. You said several times “I feel” or “I felt” and there are almost a dozen “I” statements in your comment so the problem is that its not what we feel but what does God’s Word say about this and clearly, trying to communicate with the dead is a grievous sin. It’s not what I think or feel but what God says that we must obey. You can’t allow them to come to you…they are dead and if save, with Christ. There is not ONE verse in all the Bible that says we can communicate with the dead but there are dozens warning us not to even try. YEs…indeed, it can be a demon and that’s why they’re called “familiar spirits” because these demons can imitate our lost loved ones.

Emily Kameroff July 11, 2016 at 6:16 pm

I am an Alaskan Native. Before Christianity came to destroy the spiritual life of many indigenous people of Alaska, my people lived in harmony with everything. Everything we did was good and was given to us from a higher power. We believe that everything has a spirit and our spirit lives on after death. We hold ceremonies for our dead every year. This practice along with many others were frowned upon by priests long ago. Now the catholic church is accepting our practices and beliefs and admits to their wrong doing. Being visited by spirits, dreaming and seeing signs of our dead is common and not thought of as evil.

sarah September 19, 2016 at 8:47 am

My pastor has written a book on familiar Spirits. He used the same bible verses as the writer did in the brilliant article above.

Anyone interested in a copy of the book can visit the website.
or listen to his podcasts on the same subject matter.

May the Lord have Mercy on us and deliver all those battling with this deception.

Dear Mr. Jack,

My father died last month and during his wake in the house, we have experienced strange incidents. For example, light turns ON eventhough nobody did it, another light turns OFF, etc. A day after his burial, I dreamt that I have bumped into someone but no one was there but I felt it was like a spirit and heard a voice from that spirit. I really missed my father and I hope he is with Christ now

Armila September 25, 2016 at 7:18 pm

By the way, the voice I have heard was my father’s. Also, I have put a picture of my father on a frame and hang it. After few hours, I noticed that the picture inside the frame was no longer on the same location inside the frame.

Armila September 25, 2016 at 6:54 pm

Stephen Mercer February 26, 2017 at 4:25 pm

Yes, I understand the issue of demons deceiving people and pretending to be deceased loved ones. Unfortunately, that is true. But I am also aware that there are legitimate communications from real people. What bothers me about this fundamentalist viewpoint is that folks like you are unwilling to accept such things and, through fear and ignorance, fail to grasp the larger meanings of life and Truth. Birth is not the beginning, and death is not the end. I am a Christian who has a deep personal relationship with Christmas. I have also grown in Spiritual maturity and understanding. My advice to you, and with humility, is: do not condemn what you don’t understand. Purpose instead to open your mind and heart; there ARE larger truths that you don’t yet grasp.

Jack Wellman February 26, 2017 at 4:36 pm

Thank you Mr. Mercer. I am not condemning anyone my friend. I am only exposing Scripture and what the Word of God says about trying to communicate with the dead. Death is a one-way trip (Heb 9:27). You can believe what you want, but it’s not my viewpoint that I wrote this from, but the viewpoint of Scripture, so it is based upon what the Bible says about trying to communicate with the dead. I’m not condemning anyone. God is their (and my) Judge, but the Word of God can judge us guilty (Rom 7:7) so that we might run to the cross. I hope you are not saying it’s okay to communicate with the dead, are you? I don’t know about labels (fundamentalist) but I do know where to find what is true (Gen 1:1-Rev 22:21). If that makes me a fundamentalist, then I’m one gladly.

Amanda Leal August 22, 2017 at 3:07 pm

Hello so all those people that are mediums in the shows that can tell their loved ones that they are okay and etc. They are demons? That’s demonic? this is pretty mind blowing. I would watch these shoes and believe it, because they seem so believable at what they do communicating with their loved ones and even send them messages.

Jack Wellman August 22, 2017 at 4:13 pm

Yes, that is true. They are pretty amazing, but these spirit beings are called “familiar spirits” in the Bible because they are familiar with the living and the dead and can imitate them, and that’s why they can know only those things the deceased would know. If people really understood who were behind these “lost loved ones,” they be terrified (as well they should!!).

Robert September 13, 2017 at 6:51 pm

But why does God allow people to perish suddenly like in 9/11? So it is impossible to contact deceased relatives? Once a person passes, they are cut off from this world? How do you know if a loved one was saved or not? You want to have comfort knowing if your loved one is in heaven. Is there no way of knowing if the person was truly saved or not? I’m not sure if my father, grandfather on my mom’s side and grandmother on my dad’s side made it to heaven. My dad was catholic (didn’t really go to church much) and my mom’s father didn’t go to church with us, he cursed a lot and said JC, etc. But my father said the sinner’s prayer in front of the TV a week before he passed in March 1986 according to my mom and my grandfather had some church ladies visit him in the hospital and prayed with him. And my dad’s mother apparently said her prayers according to her son, my uncle who cared for her in his house for 10 years.

Jack Wellman September 13, 2017 at 9:31 pm

Hello Robert. Yes, once a person is gone, they cannot come back and we cannot go to them. David after losing his child son, said, “He cannot come to me, but I will go to him,” meaning he will see him in the kingdom. God says it is sin to try to communicate with the dead. That should be enough to settle that question. It is an abomination to God. We cannot ever justify it. As for, How do we know if a loved one is in heaven, we cannot really know. Only God knows the heart (1st Sam 16:7). Its not for us to say. Whoever repents and believes in Jesus will be saved. Romans 10:9-13 is clear; if anyone believes this, they are saved. The only way you will know for sure is if you get there so if you are saved, then you will know someday. Why does God people to perish suddenly like in 9/11? I don’t know. Why did He allow His one and only Son to die for ungodly, wicked sinners who were enemies of God (Rom 5:6-10)?

Cassidy September 17, 2017 at 9:57 pm

Hello Jack. I have recently found this article in hopes of finding scripture that would help me write a song, but now that I have read it, I am starting to believe that God brought me here to maybe stop me from writing the song. It is this: I have a relative who is near death so the song is asking if she is feeling close to heaven, and if she has passed yet. Now after reading your article I understand that this might be risky. Could you help me understand if I am right or wrong and why?

Jack Wellman September 18, 2017 at 9:49 am

Hello Cassidy. What a beautiful thing you are doing. I see no problem with what you are doing at all my friend in Christ. The fact that you even sought advice shows me your heart is right with God. It is not wrong because this person is near death or dying and it’s not like trying to communicate with the dead. May God richly bless you….write the song. It may end up blessing many others.

Gloria C November 11, 2017 at 1:03 pm

Well if it so bad !! Why are we capable to comunicate with the dead n spirits and see the future.. god is the creator and he gave us the gift for a reason .. now people have the choice of to use it for good or bad

Jack Wellman November 11, 2017 at 1:45 pm

Hello Gloria. God did not give us the right to do what His Word forbids. It’s not my thoughts but what the Scriptures say that is important. We are capable of robbing a bank too, but that doesn’t mean we should do it because God also forbids it.

Tee January 27, 2018 at 1:30 pm

Thank Jack this is an enlightened article surely there is no life after death. Death is the final full stop. There is also no repentance after death a person can only repent and be born again only when he or she is alive

Jack Wellman January 28, 2018 at 3:13 pm

Thank you for the encouragement Tee. God bless you richly.

Thuso January 27, 2018 at 5:46 pm

I would like to thank God who is using you to reveal what most people didn’t see or know. I am feeling happy that I got a platform which will help me to grow in Christ Jesus, with His knowledge and understanding. I like to do bible study, and I was looking for school which I want to learn more about the Kingdom of God. We are living in the dispensation of lots of people calling themselves Prophets and prophetess. They talk most about wealth and all sorts of this world, they teach something in line with they want to accomplish. Help me how can I study full and be the teacher of undiluted Gospel of Jesus Christ our Lord and savior. My email address is [email protected] and [email protected]. You opened my eyes. I thank you so much, God bless you.

Jack Wellman January 28, 2018 at 3:14 pm

Hello Thuso and thank you for your kinds word. God bless you richly.

Sheryl Livatino April 16, 2018 at 8:27 am

Whenever I go to the cemetery to change the flowers in my dad’s vase, I usually tell him how much I miss and love him. I do not believe that he hears me, but it helps with my grief. Sometimes, I tell him what has been happening in my life, because it makes me feel better. Is that a sin? I am not asking for advice or to conjure him up.
Thank You!

Colin Jewell November 17, 2019 at 8:11 pm

Hi, my Mother passed away in January 2015, post death I had an experience I cannot explain. The experience involved a Pidgeon which had landed on my car, I walked up to it and was inches from it as it stood on my roof, no matter what I did this Pidgeon would not move, my Mother and Nan both loved Birds, for months after I always had a Pidgeon sat in a tree near me no matter where I moved to. I also experienced seeing a young boy running around the pompous grass in our back garden, this lasted for approximately 3 seconds, I hadn’t been drinking nor taking any illicit substance. My Wife told me that she believed I had been visited by the Holy Spirit, post event I could not speak for at least 15 minutes. These experiences were very real but now I,m reading there is no possibility that spirits can revisit this life once they have passed. So two questions I have: How can I have seen this spirit if they cannot come to us and how can the Pidgeon experience be explained? Thanks Colin.

Jack Wellman November 17, 2019 at 8:59 pm

There are manifestations that Satan can do as he can also perform wonders so this “vision” Many pigeons are tamed by owners so it could have been a lost homing pigeon. Pigeons are everywhere too, all over the USA so its not unusual to see them everywhere. I cannot explain what you experienced. The article is about communicating with the dead and we cannot do so, even though you weren’t trying. It was not your mother’s spirit. The Bible teaches no such thing is possible. Samuel was brought back but that was a judgment on King Saul and it lead to his death.

Pastor Mary McGee October 10, 2021 at 7:24 am

God bless you Jack, this is one of the most powerful articles I have read, it’s the truth, it is the WORD of GOD!
I pray the people take heed, GOD says my people perish for the lack of knowledge. WE CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH THE DEAD. For believers, to be absent from the body is to be present with the LORD!
Why would GOD allow someone that is with HIM who has passed away come back to this corrupted world!
We shall know the truth, and the truth will set us free! Take heed to this article and be obedient to the WORD OF GOD!!! Jack is speaking the WORD OF GOD!!!! PURE TRUTH!!!!
GOD richly bless you Jack!!!!

Jack Wellman October 10, 2021 at 8:28 am

Thank you pastor. So encouraging sir.

Billi-Jacquelin November 24, 2021 at 7:31 pm

Hello, thank you for your kind words, knowledge and understanding!
I am new to the Christian faith. I want nothing but to follow the word and path that Jesus has intended for me. (everyone of course!)
I used to follow tarot card readings, horoscopes etc but I have given that all up.
The last time I was at a reading the person told me that I should find a church with people that I feel comfortable with. It took me a while but I did and life has been exponentially better, as I am sure you and your readers could understand <3 I am really just curious about how a Demon told me to go to church. That does not make sense in my mind.
Although I am feeling like maybe the hooks that were in me shook loose and the demon did not see that coming. Maybe my past sins were a weapon they thought they could still use against me. I did go to people I loved who are Christian and they did not help me. Maybe they wanted me to be discourage again by that? I kept searching and succeeded. I suppose I answered the question but would love your insight on this. And in case someone who was like me is reading this I thought maybe I could be an example of the glory that is waiting for them too. <3 God is good and we all should lean on him not the devices of the world. Life is so much more than that <3
I will read up on the verses you stated in your article and I will pray for my forgiveness on that matter. Plus, never ever do that again.
Thank you for taking time out of your day to spread the word of God and if you have an answer I thank you for that as well. God Bless <3

Jack Wellman November 25, 2021 at 9:45 am

Hello friend. Demons can mix truth and error…truth and lies, & even a broke clock is right twice a day, but if you have repented of this and put your trust in Christ, you will be saved. Call your pastor and see what he says. prayers for you.
