Bible Verses About Pain:10 Comforting Scriptures

by Josh Wiley · Print Print · Email Email

What a comfort the word of God is to someone experiencing pain. Whether it be physical pain or emotional pain, the word of God is a comfort for those that truly seek wisdom. Are you experiencing some type of pain in your life today? I encourage you to read through these Bible verses after praying and asking God to use them to give you peace.

Comfort in the Lord

Bible verses about pain

The LORD is my rock and my fortress

Psalm 18:2 The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

Psalm 34:18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Jesus Felt Pain

Hebrews 2:18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Pain Leads to Repentance

2 Corinthians 7:9-10 As it is, I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you were grieved into repenting. For you felt a godly grief, so that you suffered no loss through us. For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.

Hope in the Future

Revelation 22:4-5 They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lampor sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.

Romans 8:18  For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

Biblical Example of Pain in Job

Job 1:21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”

Job 6:10 This would be my comfort; I would even exult in pain unsparing, for I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

Strength Comes from God to Overcome Pain

1 Corinthians 10:13   No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

1 Peter 5:9-10   Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

I pray these Bible verses about pain were helpful to you today. Please feel free to use them as a topical Bible study or for a devotional. Add any of your favorite comforting Bible verses about pain to the comments.

Christian Quotes About Pain

Pain is a kindly, hopeful thing, a certain proof of life, a clear assurance that all is not yet over, that there is still a chance. But if your heart has no pain — well, that may betoken health, as you suppose: but are you certain that it does not mean that your soul is dead?  ~ A.J. Gossip

Though poor in this world’s goods, though grieving the loss of loved ones, though suffering pain of body, though harassed by sin and Satan, though hated and persecuted by worldlings, whatever be the case and lot of the Christian, it is both his privilege and duty to rejoice in the Lord.  ~ A.W. Pink

In spite of sorrow, loss, and pain, Our course be onward still; We sow on Burmah’s barren plain, We reap on Zion’s hill.  ~ Adoniram Judson

We are certainly in a common class with the beasts; every action of animal life is concerned with seeking bodily pleasure and avoiding pain.   ~ Augustine

Pain removes the veil; it plants the flag of truth within the fortress of a rebel soul.  ~ C.S. Lewis

Pain is no evil, unless it conquers us.  ~ Charles Kingsley

I am certain that I never did grow in grace one-half so much anywhere as I have upon the bed of pain~ Charles Spurgeon

As I look back over fifty years of ministry, I recall innumerable tests, trials and times of crushing pain. But through it all, the Lord has proven faithful, loving, and totally true to all his promises.  ~ David Wilkerson

I am not a theologian or a scholar, but I am very aware of the fact that pain is necessary to all of us. In my own life, I think I can honestly say that out of the deepest pain has come the strongest conviction of the presence of God and the love of God.  ~ Elizabeth Elliot

God never allows pain without a purpose in the lives of His children. He never allows Satan, nor circumstances, nor any ill-intending person to afflict us unless He uses that affliction for our good. God never wastes pain. He always causes it to work together for our ultimate good, the good of conforming us more to the likeness of His Son (see Romans 8:28-29).  ~ Jerry Bridges

Greetings from Los Angeles!
Wow. I really needed these. I’m going through excruciating pain, emotionally, mentally and physically. Thank you so much. They are such a blessing. I will share these with everyone.

gerard December 15, 2012 at 12:42 am

I lost my job, was more or less outcasted because I’m a Christian. Many people do not like Christian’s who testify to Christ’s Salvation. They become uncomfortable, sometimes as a group, or “office” or just the work place. But as a born again Christian we testify to Life to those we see are blind and perishing. Who that has been Saved, and given the Truth by Christ who dwells within them, would not share in the “Life Saving” Truths of the Word of God?

After losing my job, I became very stressed, financially poor, and sick. My bills are not paid and I feel so alone. And I’m so sick as I write this physically and mentally I am oppressed with all my worries and concerns of not being able to provide the necessities.

But the Word tells us to Glory in our suffering. And I will.

Approximately two years went by while I suffered from all the human aliments you express. In that pain, I finally was so broken, I came to a place that I told God, “I trust that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28)” and although I did not understand why I couldn’t find a job or was hurting so deeply, I would glorify his name and would be happy if He wanted me to live under a bridge and I was sincere because I knew that He put me there to show me something I needed to be closer to Him and to do what He wanted me to do.

My prayers go out to you during this time. Seek His face that you may find the truth of His yearnings for you in this situation. God bless.

I understand your pain, its hard to be presecuted for the truth but we know God is faithful at all times and the is a reward in heaven. Am also going through pain.

Jason January 5, 2015 at 6:29 pm

Wow this is amazing. I too had lost ny job but found new employment. It amazes me the tole not having a job can have on your mind. For me, I had bad anxiety and deoression. I remember going to the doctor because I was feeling off and being prescribed anti-anxiety medicine. The next morning I quit my job because I felt the world was sinking in on me and I couldn’t stand the hatred I had for my fellow employees. This overload of stress has caused my to have muscle twitches which I am still managing months later. I’ve realized that doctors are not akways the best solution to every problem, and that I am going through a faith battle. I would enjoy to speak more with about all of this, and maybe we can encourage one another.

Terri May 13, 2019 at 4:11 pm

I understand what you all are saying! Working through the same struggles…..with a thankful heart!

First, Jason, muscle twitches (and leg cramps and ‘restless leg syndrome as well) are usually a sign of magnesium deficiency. You can easily absorb this via a bath or foot soak in epsom salts!

Next, there are so many verses in Scripture that assist us in our pursuit of God through Jesus. These are two of my favorites:

“So do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1.

God Bless you all.

I am so excited that you found comfort in these verses. May God continue to bring you to the powerful peace that comes from His word!

Da'Sha December 4, 2011 at 10:53 pm

That’s for the blog. Looking for words of comfort and encouragement during a hardship for me and my church family. Youth minister resigned abruptly and it shocked many of us. While I don’t know the parameters of what took place, she is family. I hurt for her and my church because we love her & will miss her. It’s like losing a family member. I’m sure many more tears will come and God will be there to help us through. Again, thank you so much. Be blessed

Thank you so much for sharing. Your attitude of choosing to praise God during times of trouble is a good lesson for all of us! God will bless you for submitting to and praising Him in humble obedience.

Toya January 19, 2012 at 2:31 am

I don’t think it was by accident that I came across this website at 2:27 am. I’m in the process of trying to come to terms with a 3 year relationship that ended last month and it’s been somewhat difficult for me to get past the pain. These scriptures reminded me that I’m not the only one who has gone through this and that God truly has someone better for me. In addition, I’m reminded to pray and read my scripture to find peace and comfort. Thank you so much for posting.

Da January 19, 2012 at 10:40 am

The relationship ending might be the best for you. You are now ready for the next level. It’s hard to understand when we want what we want but God can see past our current comfort into the greatness that he has planned for us. Be strong in faith, you will be better off on the other side. If they relationship is meant, he has to be prepared for you. God bless!

Josh January 19, 2012 at 7:42 pm

Paula May 30, 2012 at 11:49 pm

Sometimes in life we think we know what we need in our pain and yet we really dont know what is best for us. Maybe God is teaching and refining us to learn to seek him in all things and to remember what our real purpose in life is, which is to glorify God in all that we do and say. He was merciful to us by his sacrifice on the cross but we tend to forget that we are miserable sinners and do wrong so often. So my point is that we are put through trials and pain for a reason. God loves us and wants us for his own. If only we would obey him. The next time we pray in our pain, let us pray that Gods will be done and if it feels like he doesnt answer your prayers it is only because he is working in ways you do not know. I found this to be a great comfort and hope it will be for others.

Brian June 28, 2012 at 10:59 am

Cool Josh you made a statement to a reader who is trying to recover from a loss through a relationship, you were right and the Lord sometimes protects while we are in the midst of the pain and puts blinders on us so we will not know everything that has occurred during the process of losing but I have come to grips with the fact that we most often gain as a result of losing because we have to find him in order to find ourselves and he will show us if we have repeat patterns that need to be dealt with. The scriptures are great I am about to forward them to a friend who is going through a painful experience. I am in therapy as a result of a break up but I have truly found the one who has made me and now I know I need to work on me and my painful past.

Josh June 28, 2012 at 6:13 pm

Thanks for sharing Brian. What a powerful testament to the strength from God and how God uses even pain to draw us closer to Him. Thanks for sharing this article with others and please visit again.

anne-marie December 9, 2012 at 9:09 am

Thank you for the scripture and all the posts. I too have physical pain every day. I have severe scoliosis , and a bad hip and neuropathy which makes my leg feel numb and burning . I am 73 and have been walking almost a mile for months and I walk with pain most days. I have been blessed in many ways. I have two beautiful children, a good job at my home, a strong spiritual family and many more things to be grateful for. I would like to be free from daily pain or the courage to accept it. I am discouraged alot by it.

Nai December 14, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Im going through alot of pain right now physically and it has taken a toll on me emotionally because I am so young. But through this struggle im learning about god more and more each day and even though im hurting there is still some peace there in my heart

Austin John January 12, 2013 at 4:13 am

Thank-you for the verses. Its hard at times to pick up a Bible, or know where to start with it. Since I was 13 I have suffered from insomnia, chronic back pain and severe depression. For many of my teenage years I grew up without my brothers or parents, to this day I miss my brothers and still do not have a father in my life. I wonder sometimes if I deserve this. But sometimes we need to be reminded about what God says about our times of trial. I think its somewhere in Proverbs where God says “consider your times of trial pure joy” for they will help you to help others through the same thing, and they will make you stronger for your trials ahead. Sometimes I forget all the good that comes from bad things. God really means it when he says if you seek him out, he will find you.

Pamela Rose Williams January 12, 2013 at 12:00 pm

Hello Austin John, I just wanted to let you know that I am encouraged by your comment. Thank you for this.

Monica February 15, 2013 at 1:57 pm

i have just found out that the man that i was in a relationship with for ovr 4 years has been seeing another person. i am deeply hurt, not just for the pain of this information but for the fact that i gave him 2nd chance to come back into my life after forgiving him and then he turns around and does the same thing again

Da'Sha February 15, 2013 at 11:01 pm

Monica, I know you are really hurting right now. God is always with you and he will comfort you. He is bigger than the hurt and pain. Seek him. Allow him to fill you with his love and heal you heart. I will be praying for you. Take care.

christine March 1, 2013 at 2:43 am

really appreciate this verses especially when am going through a horrible break-up

Megan April 13, 2013 at 10:22 pm

I was diagnosed with severe juvenile arthritis whenever I was 12 years old. I was struggling with the fact that I would no longer be what i used to consider a normal kid. I would questioning my faith in God. I found this post about a year ago and I started reading different scriptures in the bible and talking with my youth pastor. I am 15 now and I am a youth volunteer and leader at my church now. And even though my arthritis hasn’t gotten any better, my faith and spirit has been lifted up and I’m happier now. Thank you so much for putting this on here. I don’t know where I would be right now if I never would’ve found this.

Doug September 7, 2013 at 12:10 am

Anyone who lives with pain and needs encouragement, drop by my FB page Doug W. Koehler. I am a pastor forced to retire after over 17 years of ministry due to the effects of Chronic Pain. I share online how the Lord helps me through my trials. Here is a sample…

Pain removes the veil; it plants the flag of truth within the fortress of a rebel soul. ~ C.S. Lewis.

This is very cool to me to find this comment from my favorite author. You see I have said over and over again that when a person suffers daily, it strips them of all the things that they normally cling to and moves them to turn to the one source that really can make a difference. It reminds the person of this fallen world that is quite convicting because there is nothing that says “FALLEN/BROKEN” as a person who suffers from pain and is now limited or unable.

But the Christian can see past the pain (thanks be to God) and look to the comfort and Promises won for us through Christ Jesus our Lord. Remember our Lord is an every present help in times of trouble, not because that is when He acts but because that is when He is often considered.

Tristan September 1, 2014 at 2:18 pm

Hi! I want to thank you for posting these verses. I am a 17 year old guy and for a long time I have been looking for scriptures to use as examples and guides to spread about pain at assembly because recently a girl I knew committed suicide. She was 14 and I feel pain is one of the little topics never spoken about. Especially people my age! And this may sound stupid in comparison to the other comments, but yesternight I broke down crying to Jesus to help me, because I messed up a good friendship with a girl I like by pouring out my feelings toward her and rushing into something she was not yet ready for. And now every great memory is just what it is. A memory. But these verses cheered me up. And I hope with the help of Jesus I could recover what my girl friend I had! Thanks a lot!!

Jon March 5, 2015 at 7:28 pm

I just broke up with the woman I loved because God told me I am not the man she needs in her life. It was a very hard thing to do and she is hurt deeply and very angry. Please pray for her I just want her to find what she needs.

Jack Wellman March 5, 2015 at 8:04 pm

I will Jon. Let me ask you friend, how do you know it was God’s will? How did He speak to you or tell you this? Is this what you wanted? How do you discern from the voice of Satan and his demons and the voice of God. I hope you did the right thing sir. I will pray for her and for you. Thank you.

Daniel April 8, 2015 at 11:49 pm

My best friend is always in a lot of pain. Nothing seems to be helping her either. Every night she gets a few hours of sleep and has major headaches every day. Every medicine she takes does not help. Her parents spend a lot of money trying to get her help. She isn’t exactly depressed but thinks it would be better if she died right now rather than have her parents spend so much money on gas for appointments, money for the appointments, and money for medicines which don’t work. She’s tired of being in pain and her parents spending so much money trying to help her when it really doesn’t so she is telling them that a ,edecine is working helping her to sleep when it’s not helping her very much.

Bruce Welmerink May 3, 2015 at 8:54 am

Josh, I am using your list of 10 comforts in my message today. I teach an English Bible study here in Sao Paulo, Brazil. I like your list and it will be a blessing to those who hear God’s words in life applications.

God bless you and I hope you are doing well with a job at this time. Thanks for sharing publicly.

Livhuwani Muluvhu June 22, 2015 at 7:40 am

I kept on doing sins but I hate them. My soul and spirit is always crying for repent. I am baptized but still a sinner. I really want to be out of sins and work for God the Lord Jesus Christ with whole life of mine. When I am on pain my faith is less due to the sin the devil remind me as I pray. My the Grace and Mercy of God Lord Jesus Christ be with me…..

confused/bitter August 11, 2015 at 2:09 pm

This is awfully embarrassing for me but here it goes: I have been in a relationship for 6yrs . He lives in Malaysia, before anything is said, it wasn’t one of those money things. I have visited him twice which one of those he has paid for. Have always been there for each other for everything. moving forward: have done 3 petitions for fiancé visa, again heres why: the first time after getting approval I was involved in an auto accident that left me In rehab for 6 months lost all. He was there during those times, emotionally and financially, the petition expired, retried again, however the 2 yr meeting mark had expired a month before and was denied. made another visit in sept. ’14 refiled in oct’14.. Here is the part of confusion: Back in Janruary ’15 started having periods of unrest, like something is wrong. I told my fiancé and he said pray on it and cast it out. I started having reoccurring dreams that spoke of infidelity, again cried and said of devil and cast it out. In June the paperwork was approved and on its way to him. joyous day! then the dreams got more intense. I told him it was more powerful and I saw a child. oh boy, he cried and said cast it out again was the devil.I started backing up and distanced myself.2 weeks ago he told me he and friends he was going to update his passport. I received a message from him, he confessed he got another woman pregnant. he said my dream let him realized he ruined our relationship. he even said he wanted to abort the child but found out they were twins. said he lost everything and now has to try to learn to love the person carrying his babies. I just knew it was something. It wasn’t a such a bad blow, but here is the thing..Ive been through this before, marriage of abuse, hurt, infidelity and abandonment. I ask myself why? I give all and get nothing. I’m a great God-fearing woman, but why do hurtful things happen to me. One moment am up with my finances, next moment am down. been happening for the past 8 yrs.
Bad marriages for past 21 yrs. I just don’t get how to stay faithful now? I look around and see people who is doing worldly things just making it what seems to be no worries. I know am wrong for thinking like that but its how I feel. Whats the point of all this? Please forgive me as I think I’ve had all I can stand…

Janet DeVino June 7, 2016 at 6:18 pm

What about a Christian that take some pain medicine. I have not increased my meds but I have not decreased them either. At time I feel fine, about taking them. At other times I feel judged about taking them by those I’ve told. I have bad neck and back issues. and suffered with stage 4 Endometriosis. fought against meds for years. Had surgery finally after my problem had a name. Than back issues followed. I gave in and started taking meds. when I have tried to go off them, the pain is so bad I want to die. Will God reject me although I still claim him as My savior?

Jack Wellman June 7, 2016 at 8:29 pm

Thank you Mrs. Devino. No, God will never reject you (Heb 13:4). What if someone broke there arm. We’d never judge them for getting pain medicine and having the bone set. You are not sinning my friend but following doctors orders. Besides, studies indicate that the less pain there is, the more healing there is or at least recovery. Jesus and the Father have got you in their hand forever (John 10:28-29). Read Romans chapter 8 to see why you are secure. The opinions of your friends doesn’t count but only God’s does and even Jesus said “The sick need a physician.” You’re not sinning in my opinion.

My wife, Connie filed a divorce recently. I am hurtful. We have disagrees over children who are over 18 years old. Oldest daughter with three grandchildren wanted to move in and living with us. I said no. Young daughter fussed at me all the time. I couldn’t handle her frustration. That made Connie to file a divorce. Wished she would wake up and be beside with me as a husband and wife. Please pray for us.

Romans 8:18 says “….in us..” Not ..”to us..” At least in my Bible… There is a huge difference!

Your unwise to talk Jesus at work. Your not being payed or paid to do that.

Good morning I just buried my daughter and was going through the wave of pain, when I got up this morning I was led to find scriptures on pain, which I would do in situations, using the Scriptures as my balm.
I got out the pain by talking about it but the word is my healer.
Thank you for these scriptures.
Now I will medicate and will be cured.

I have severe arm, chest, neck and and back pain and a constant skipped heart beat. I go to emergency the brief ECG monitor picks up nothing. The pain continues. I feel nauseated and very sick. I have a hiatal hernia but never had pain this bad. Pain is in my chest most of all and is unbearable and can’t be managed in any way by my medications. They did a a d-dimer which showed negative but wondering if maybe it still is and it is worrying me as they are often wrong. I have brief gasps for air and feel ultra tight in my chest. Pain to this date is worsening. I’m scared of death. I’m scared I’m very ill and this pain won’t go away, pain started up last week but went off the scale three days ago. My arms feel heavy and on fire and my back as well. I have weird jaw and neck pains. My chest feels so awful and is having constant tight spasms as well. I want to die. Can’t take it anymore. My mind feels so clouded and it is hard to speak I can’t talk to God anymore or read the bible due to the intensity.

Hello Bec. Such suffering and agony only a few have endured more than you have. Of course, Jesus suffered like no one, so did the Apostle Paul and Job, but I am at a loss as to what to tell you…except that I will pray for you. Can you ask your church membership to pray for you. It cannot hurt to have the saints of God pouring our their prayer requests for you.

Hi Bec. I have experienced the same. This is a battle you mostly need to fight yourself with Christ. Focus on God and it will go away. In my case, I was in pain and fear, but these are all tactis from the devil. You will grow from this. God uses the enemy sometimes so we can grow in faith. Even gold has to go through a certain process.

Don’t give up and never fear!

Hello I had typed on Google how to go through physical pain Scriptures in the word. 6 months ago I was going to a cowboy church. I busted my knee cap completely loose taking down a steer. Every one said get better, I’m praying for you. Surgeon put me on 6 months recovery which put me out of the rest of the church’s rodeo season. Never heard from anyone again during that 6 months. I drug my self into that church barn convinced I would be talked to by the other cowboys and minister cattle buster, not one word. I even said I’m not gonna let this happen so I went up to them and stuck my hand straight out and blessed them. I wasn’t going to sink down that way . Never heard from them again. Now I believe that if a Christian Man or woman can make you question your faith, it’s time to hit your knees. I just busted up that same knee and have surgery in two weeks. All the people who say they care and love me, haven’t heard from when I asked for help with everyone going to be gone all day while recovering. How do you continue to believe that beyond some immediate family, are not just flapping words. Christ’s love is the only one that won’t leave or quit. It’s just so painful with this injury and no one returns any communication back. I’m having a hard time. I need to begin praying again, and hear God’s voice again, cause right now I’m not. Would you please pray for this ole boy.

Does anyone ever consider gods pain? if we are all gods children. He must watch us all 1 by 1 perish.

God we feel your pain, we love you too.

Thanks for having these scriptures so readily available. They’ve helped me.

I was stabbed 7 times years ago, and when operated on, it was a long slice up my belly. Being an alpha male I went back to work too soon; this was years ago. Today I have a hernia as big as a hardball. I have been in the emergency room 3 times. They took chest x-rays. I am a truck driver long haul doing my best to watch my weight. My job insisted on me going back to work, and I can’t. It is Christmas time now, and after it is over I will go back to the emergency room.
