Well balanced choice Pam of Scriptures. I believe reading these will increase my faith and trust in God because my flesh tends to look at things rather than look at the All-Powerful and All-Mighty Invisible God.

Pam January 30, 2012 at 7:29 pm

Thank you Jack, As the Lord would have it, this is the subject that came up on my list of things to write about on the day that my hubby had a little surgery. The surgery went well and I praise God for keeping me from the “spirit of fear” as I looked to our Great Physician for comfort and peace. All glory to God for that!

I claimed this Scripture on that day: Psalms 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Susie January 30, 2012 at 10:52 pm

I often cannot understand why I must fear God. I dont want to be afraid of Him. He has blessed us all with His son, our Saviour and our only hope of redemption and salvation. I tell myself that as a christian, I need to fear Him, but im not sure exactly why or how.

Pam January 31, 2012 at 1:00 pm

Hi Susie,

You are not the only one who might be confused about what does it mean to fear God. Truly the Bible explains itself but sometimes it is helpful to have tools for study as well. Let’s study out one of the small verses I used above:

1 Peter 2:17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

Peter is using “Fear God” along with the words “love” and “honor”. So first of all you should ask yourself the question “what does fear have to do with love and honor”, else this verse makes no sense whatsoever. This is a good example from the Bible of where the English translation from the Greek needs a little more explanation.

You might recall in my opening paragraph I said that the Bible uses 4 different Greek words in the New Testament for fear, so to understand the true meaning of “fear God”, as used by Peter here we need to look at the original word in the Greek, which was “fobevw”, translated to “Phobeo”, translated to “fear”. In this case the word is best defined as “to reverence, venerate, to treat with deference or reverential obedience”.

So to “fear God” means to “reverence God”. Now when you look at that verse again, it makes sense! Please know that you do not need to know Greek to understand the Bible. I used tools for my response to you today. I suggest you use some tools too when you are studying the Bible. The first tool you should have is a concordance. Many Bibles have a small concordance in the back — it is much like a dictionary. A larger concordance associates a number for each word in its original language (Hebrew for Old Testament and Greek for New Testament). So in this case I looked in my concordance and found that the word “fear” as used by Peter is “5401”, then I was able to look up the original Greek word and see the definition.

I like the Strong’s concordance the best, and I found this one built into an online tool called an Interlinear Bible. I put a link on our Resources Page here: http://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/resources/ I just plugged in the verse and it gave me information about the original words, then I clicked on the words to see the meanings.

I hope this is helpful to you Susie. Long story — short — Simply love, honor and obey God and you will be living in the Fear of God. Thanks for visiting and leaving your comment here at WCWTK. Come back soon!

Susie, when the bible talks about fearing the Lord it is talking about having a reverence for Him and wanting to obey His will. It is not talking about a physical fear, like you would be afraid of the dark or something like that. Read 2Timothy 1:7. Get you a good study bible so that you can get understanding of the verse, or a bible commentary. Be blessed.

Susie, that word “fear” doesn’t mean fear like we think. It means to “reverence” God. God’s word says He doesn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, lover and a sound mind!

It’s absolute truth that fear is a killer for time: It creates spirit of delay and enhances stagnation since it confines one on one spot while others advance.

Faith comes by hearing and by hearing of the Word of God- Romans 10:17, For me when Im not reading the scriptures, or praying, or listening to, or watching things that are for edification, then at times I lose the sense of fearing Jehovah God, as not being as grateful, not seeking Him as much, increased confusion without a relationship/ fellowship with Christ Jesus, lacking faith and trust in the Lord, lacking inner peace, fear of death , having more pride, focusing on more worldly things to fill the voids of love, happiness, being content, unstable peace. When I lack a constant edification then Im not sowing in the spirit, therefore Im not reaping those things that Lord gives us according to His Word. What may look on the outside physical sense as stagnation, is really you being quick to hear, and slow to speak, also self evaluating, not trying to line the scriptures with your life, but praying He will help you line your life and beliefs with His will according to His Word. Im a living witness to this, not that Im perfected, Im still learning, but as Isaiah 28:10 – For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line unto line, line unto line, there a little, and there a little. The Lord has allowed me to be myself, making mistakes, at times I knew, many times not knowing, but then without me forseeing, through Christ Jesus he will show me my thoughts in the scriptures then what His thoughts are of what I did wrong, thats how He is teaching me, no one else knows exactly what you do, or your every move, or your inner thoughts and heart, but God, and through Christ Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith we are being renewed inwardly day by day. Your inward advancement is far above gold, and rubies, walking with the Lord Jesus will not only benefit a peace on earth, but also hoping for his coming and eternal life, a blessed reward through Jesus Christ precious blood, this advancement will help us focus on the approval and praise of God rather than men, and the witness of God is greater. Psalms 51:all – Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalms 19: all -Keep thy servant also from presumptuous sins, let them not have dominion over me, so shall I be upright and made clean from the great transgressions.

Thank you Pam and company for this great lesson about Fear. I now truly realize that with God on your side there is truly nothing to to be scared of or to worry about because if you always fear(have faith in) him, he will always have your back. Just knowing that is such a relief and a blessing, especially in such an unstable and dangerous world like this one. Thank you Pam and may the lord be with you in future projects ^_^

There is this website http://www.feargod.net/verses.php , and there is over 100 scriptures in reference to fear God. Our God Jehovah, he is a God of lovingkindness, forgiveness, righteousness, and judgment. God is loving and merciful full of grace, and that lead me to repentance. Christ Jesus paid a painful price with his precious blood for my many most aweful sins, and the whole world, and I was born into death, and also serving sin, on my way to eternal death. Judgment of God , Psalms 103 says and is true for my life, He has not rewarded us according to our iniquities. Luke 12:5, fear him who has the power to cast into hell. So yes, part of my fearing God does fear his judgment, because he is righteous, his ways and thoughts are not like ours, I know that I am not perfected, but to keep pressing toward the mark, Philipians 3:12. Fearing God for me also relates to, wow, the Lord has been so good to me, Im thankful, and I feel bad ( judging myself) when Im doing things that Im aware of, through his chastisement, love, mercy, and teachings, are not pleasing in his sight, then my heart condemns me, 1 John ch. 3, but if my heart does not condemn me I have confidence toward God, 1 John ch. 3. Philipians 4:7, And the peace of God which passeth all understanding shall preserve your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Thank you for posting this information… You made it easier to find these Bible verses… and you are so right about that a spirit of fear is something that we are encouraged not to have. I believe that all people that don’t know the Lord live in some kind of fear and anxiety, and there is a reason for that: THEY HAVE NO HOPE! And without hope, how can you live fear free? You simply can’t.

I am a Christian Author, and a missionary in Central America; I wrote a book about my testimony in which I talk about how for 15 years, my mother was tormented by evil spirits to the point that she lost control of her body, and began to get involved in witchcraft, and as a child, I witnessed the work of the devil and he doesn’t play around…

Fear has a deep spiritual root, and until we, as Christians, don’t understand this, we will not be set free from it. Fear is a LIE from Satan, and it’s one of his greatest weapons. Through fear, he has destroyed entire families and even, entire nations.

Fear is a spirit, and it’s only through spiritual warfare and prayer that we will conquer. The Lord has given us a great weapon, HIS WORD, which is the sword of the Holy Spirit in our mouth, and this is the way that we will overcome fear, through his word of TRUTH, we will destroy the LIE of the devil.

Well, again, thank you for posting this article, it was a blessing to read it, I would also like to share some information, if I’m permitted, I wrote an article that I hope would be a blessing to the community. Here is the link:

May the Lord bless you… Greetings from Central America

“FEAR” – WISDOM OF SOLOMON 17:12-13 – Fear is nothing but the failure to use the help that reason gives. When you lack confidence to rely on reason, you give in to the fears caused by ignorance.” Reference: Good News Bible GNT

Jack Wellman March 9, 2020 at 4:54 pm

I would not depend on wisdom from the Wisdom of Solomon because it is part of the apocrypha which the Jews did not accept as inspired nor do Christians accept it as inspired by God. It might be inspiring, but it’s not inspiried by the Holy Spirit. The Wisdom of Solomon, also called the Book of Wisdom, is one of the books of the Apocrypha which are not cannoized. … The books of the Apocrypha are accepted primarily by the Roman Catholic Church and are included in Catholic Bibles, but apparently in the Good News Bible, which now makes me hesitant to ever recommend this Bible. Here is more on the Apocrypha and why these books, including the Wisdom of Solmon, should not be in the Bible; https://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/what-are-the-apocrypha-books-should-they-be-in-the-bible/ Also, here is something that might help you understand what it means to fear the Lord or fear God. https://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/what-does-it-mean-to-fear-the-lord/
