Bible Verses for Hard Times: 21 Uplifting Scriptures

by Pamela Rose Williams · Print Print · Email Email

Life is full of twists and turns and sometimes we fall upon hard times. No matter what the circumstance we can rest in the fact that God is always faithful. He will hold us in the hollow of His hand and when we ask, He will help us through the hard times. If you are struggling today, or you know someone who is in hard times, I hope that these 21 uplifting Scriptures will be a blessing.

Featured Verse: Psalms 119:67-68 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word. You are good and do good; teach me your statutes

Cry Out To Jesus

Psalms 3:4 I cried aloud to the LORD,  and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah

Psalm 34:17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.

Psalms 50:15 …call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him,  and he will make straight your paths.

Isaiah 55:6 Seek the LORD while he may be found;  call upon him while he is near

Keep Your Head High and Sing Praises

Psalms 42:5 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,  my salvation

Psalms 66:17-20 I cried to him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me!

Psalms 146:5-6 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God, who made heaven and earth,  the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever

Acts 16:25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them

Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessings & Deliverance On the Way

2 Corinthians 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

2 Corinthians 1:10 He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.

Colossians 1:13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son

Hebrews 6:19-20 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

James 1:12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

On the Other Side of the Hard Trial

James 1:2-4 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Psalms 119:71-72 It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes. The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

Psalms 119:75-76 I know, O LORD, that your rules are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me. Let your steadfast love comfort me according to your promise to your servant.

Romans 5:2-5 Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Romans 8:28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

Hello, I just finished my Junior year at Heritage Christian Academy. I also just finished taking a Bible class that studied the book of Romans. I originally came here to find a verse for a friend of mine who is strugling with trials in his life and found plenty of verses to help him out. However, I found that you put Romans 8:28 as one of the 21 verses. My bible teacher (who is one of the most godly guys I know) said that you should never quote Romans 8:28 without quoting verse 29 with it. He says that when people view that verse without looking at verse 29 with it, they get their own deffinition of “good” when this verse is talking about God’s deffinition of good. As we all know, our deffinition of good is self-centered and sinful, while God’s deffinition of good is pure and will benifit everyone. So out of the most highest respect, I recomend that you should add Romans 8:29 to Romans 8:28, so people won’t exept what they want out of God, but what God wants out of them.

I can’t thank you enough for these versus. I have been trying very hard to get off the path of drinking and all that comes along with the repercussions of driving while under the influence. As it is my fault and take full responsibility for what I have done I still need the comfort of the Lord. Again, thank you for these versus.

I have battled with alcoholism and all of the bad things that come along with it for over twenty years. I went to A.A. when I was 17 years old and stayed sober (meaning not one drop of alcohol) long enough to get my six month chip. My friends convinced me that I wasn’t an alcoholic and we were just having a “good time” when we went out drinking.

Well, I am 39 years old and I was recently diagnosed with stage four cirrhosis of the liver. Stage four is the final stage and it isn’t very fun. The only thing left at this point from a medical stand point is a liver transplant, but I have no medical insurance and I don’t see a liver transplant in my future.

However, my last drink was 11/02/2012 and I have been attending Celebrate Recovery (you can have difficulty with any aspect of your life in this program… I would strongly suggest looking it up and learning more about it) regularly. Anyone reading this who has not heard of CR is strongly encouraged to read a little about it. It has helped SO MANY people. It is for ANYONE with almost any type of hurt, hang-up or habit. Rick Warren (Purpose Driven Life) was one of the founders of CR.

I could go on about what a wonderful recovery program it is, but I just wanted to share on here. Stop drinking now and save yourself lots of heartache. 22 years went by very quickly and now they say I don’t have much time left. However, I choose to have faith in His word and I will do my best to do what the doctor’s tell me, but they cannot put an expiration date on me. God planned my birth and death long before my mother gave birth to me and I choose to focus on Him. My death may not have anything to do with my liver and I am going to be happy in getting to know Him better and living for Him. God Bless!!

May god be with you, I know that each day will become harder and harder, but keep your faith strong through this time, for when we are weakest the devil will try to take hold but keep steadfast in your journey with and for the lord. If you ever need to talk, you can talk to god, me, your family, or even a complete stranger and I guarantee if you do this in your time/s of need then you will always be comforted. Stay strong, keep praying, and know you are always loved and are never alone.

Ashlee March 15, 2015 at 2:36 am

Thank you so much!! I am happy to still be here and in good health. Stage 4 doesn’t go away, but I am doing very well… considering everything. 🙂

Pamela Rose Williams January 17, 2013 at 8:53 am

AMEN ashlee — I love how you said // Stop drinking now and save yourself lots of heartache. // I am so happy that you are living your life for the Lord now. And you are absolutley correct that God planned your birth and He knows you death too, which may have nothing to do whatsoever with your liver. Thanks so much for sharing your testimony here dear. You are in y prayers.

Ashlee March 15, 2015 at 2:42 am

Thank you so much!! I have been going to my doctor every 90 days/ 3 months for over two years to get all of my blood work done and everything. We are going to do a CT Scan in a couple of months and get a visual on my liver. Stage 4 obviously doesn’t go away, but I have been getting healthier instead of sicker and that works for me. When I was diagnosed in November 2012 I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it to my 40th birthday (the coming March) and I just had a WONDERFUL 42nd birthday celebration with my family last night!!! Hope all is going well for you and your family!!

Thank you for putting these verses on here, I just found out that my husband has been cheating on me, and has been for a while, we just got married and he was cheating on me during this time. I also, with knowing all this stress failed my nursing boards and felt as if life could not get ANY worse. I’m feeling angry and bitter and a good friend told me to look to the Lord and to read bible versus that directly relate to tough times. Reading these makes me have faith once again, and that things will get better.

Pamela Rose Williams February 11, 2013 at 10:06 pm

Hi Amanda, I am so sorry to hear your news but very encouraged that your faith is renewed from reading God’s word. Forgiveness is possible and God is still on the throne! I will pray that your marriage is restored and that you and your husband will soon put this behind you. In the meantime, keep in God’s word and believe that He has all the answers. Prayers going up from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Here are a couple other articles that might lift you up:

Rebecca March 9, 2013 at 10:02 am

I worked for a local hospital for 8 years, the other25 years in the medical field. A year ago I had to have a back fusion d/t osteoporosis, arthritis and deterioration of the vertebra and discs. I have been told by many doctors that I cannot work again. I have lived for a year and a half with NO income. Only the little genereations here and there have kept me off the street. I am a preachers kid, so I grew up in the HolyBible. I believe every word. I am just haveing a hard time understanding why it seems to feel like I am being abandoned. I know I am not, but, being honest, sometimes, I feel very alone in my future in this world. I have no resources except my faith. But my bills keep mounting up, and in a month or two I will be homeless with a “unconfirmed” disability. Any advice or help. I have no family but a sister who lives far away.

Delkasha Harris March 23, 2013 at 10:56 pm

I hope that these words find you in good sprite.I say to you if you ask for help, help will be given to you. Just hold on the Lord will see you through all this. If you have a sister and you have never reached out to her, now is the time to reach out for help. Sometimes we have not because we asks not.But please put God first in all things and he will lead your way to all the greatness in life.

cynthia March 14, 2013 at 1:27 pm

I am in a failing business with a miserable partner. She makes everyday unbearable (mostly to me but also to our loyal employees). I am putting all my faith in God to guide me to what I need to do. I know he will direct me in the path. I am having a difficult time seeing the path. I ask all to pray for me. I am ok if I have to close the business…if this is Gods will.
Thank you for the scripture. I am new to website. I will be back.

PS>>>I also needed to read some of the comments to remind me that my situation isn’t the end of all things for me.

Great scriptures! We have to be fed by them and fill our mind with the living word and cast out depression and fear (which I am having a hard time with).
There’s a site called where each day one uplifting scripture comes up. There’s a app of it too. Great to get the truth in your head in every day life.

Raheel August 7, 2013 at 1:49 am

Thank you very much for sharing such beautiful verses from the bible. I am from Pakistan and going through some really difficult days of my life but me and my wife are continuously praying to God for better times. These hard times have also brought a positive change in our lives. Now both of us sit for our family prayer daily and surrender ourselves to God.

Please keep us in your prayers so that our hard times can be shortened and God shows us his Grace and Blessings.

red January 13, 2014 at 9:44 pm

I have been going through some hard times, I kindly and humbly ask for you to pray for me. I have a degree but can’t seem to pass the state certification test, this weekend will be my seventh time. I have become desperate, I’ve prayed and cried hoping to pass for two years. Please pray for me I’m at the end of my ropes.

Brian Hasselman March 10, 2014 at 3:39 am

Hebrews 4 15-16 says “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, but without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Grace is God giving us good things we don’t deserve, mercy is Him keeping from us the bad consequences we do deserve. Please be encouraged, I have done stupid things that could have gotten me into a lot of trouble, but Jesus’s grace and mercy were bigger than my troubles. Thats not to say we should purposely sin, but He loves us so much, and that covers a multitude of sins. Much love to you all. 3 John 1:2.

Pamella May 27, 2014 at 3:50 am

Thank you, thank you. I’m so encouraged.

I recently moved my family about 2 hours away from our home town because I was having trouble finding a job. The place I moved to seemed like the perfect place to find employment easy, but boy was I wrong. Even though I haven’t given up I found that reading your article was very uplifting and makes me want to strive even harder to get a job.I also enjoyed reading everyone else’s story, some even made me shed tears.I’m glad to be able to share my story with someone because my family w won’t understand me they will just try to convince me to come back home.if anyone reads my story please keep me in your prayers .thanks

Ashlee March 15, 2015 at 2:55 am

Praying for you and your family. Hope you found a great job and you are doing very well.

Douglas March 14, 2015 at 2:10 pm

Wow I am astonished by the power of the word of God over his people. I was looking for verses of encouragement for my wife she going to preach in prison tomorrow morning, I thank God that I have across this web-site . We have picked Rom 5 v2-5 for my wife’s session. I guess I am blessed to be part of your family in Christ sister Pamella!

May The Lord give you strength, wisdom and power in Jesus name. Be Blessed with all the site followers. Amen

Ashlee March 15, 2015 at 2:53 am

Good luck to your wife as she ministers at the prison. I am praying that she plants some seeds tomorrow and God waters all of them. I also prayed that God will soften the hearts of the people that will be hearing your wife in the morning. God Bless you, your wife, your family, and all of the lives that you come in contact with to glorify His Kingdom.

Ashlee March 15, 2015 at 3:09 am

I went and found this on I thought it was very interesting for you and your wife to read. I was just thinking since your wife will be ministering in a prison, it could be influential to the women to know that some of the books in the Bible that were penned by Paul were while he was in prison. It might help some of them to not fell like nobody understands what it is like to be in prison and what is the point in trying to find forgiveness and joy while incarcerated. Hope that helps a little. I am going to try and “paste” the article now…

Romans Summary
by Jay Smith

The book of Romans is a Pauline Epistle (letter from Paul). The Apostle Paul wrote it roughly about 56-57 A.D. The key personalities in the book of Romans are the Apostle Paul, and Phoebe who delivered this letter. Paul wrote the letter to the believers in Rome, hence the name “Romans”. He wrote it to give them a concrete theological foundation on which to construct their faith and to live for and serve God effectively.

The book of Romans reveals the answers to important questions and supplies information on many topics, such as salvation, the sovereignty of God, judgment, spiritual growth, and the righteousness of God. Many scholars also describe it as The Gospel and the Righteousness of God, which can be received only by faith in the atoning death of Jesus Christ.

The focus of the “righteousness of God” is foundational throughout the book of Romans. In fact, it is threaded through every section of the basic outline of this epistle. Paul reiterates this so that the reader may realize that salvation cannot be attained through man’s good deeds but only through faith in God’s righteousness: “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes… For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith” (1:16-17). You cannot repair your relationship with God through your good deeds; this is only accomplished through faith in the perfect and finished work of Jesus Christ.

• In chapters 1-8, Paul explains the fundamentals and foundations of the Christian faith. This is the Gospel Message, which all believers are commanded to share with the entire world. Some of the most popular and precious memorization passages about Salvation can be found in the first several chapters of Romans, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (6:23). Paul teaches about the sinful nature of all men in the eyes of God, justification by faith in Jesus Christ, freedom from sin, and victory in Christ.

• Chapters 9-11, Paul explains God’s sovereignty over salvation. He also spells out how an individual may come into a right relationship with God: “if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” (10:13). Place your faith and trust only in what Jesus Christ has already done on the cross and make Him the Master of your life and trust He raised Himself from the grave conquering death. His promise is “You will be saved”.

• In chapters 12-16, Paul gives instructions for all Christians about how to live a holy lifestyle. In the beginning of chapter 12 he writes, “Present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice”, and “Do not be conformed to this world” (vss. 1-2). Much of the errors and trials that Paul dealt with in his “Epistles”, were because the believers had conformed their lives to the world and not to God.

It never ceases to amaze me how God works….. in each and every aspect in my life I have been “guided” and prepared for by his divine plan…. I still sometime do not understand, but know that He is almighty at my side even if I go through ditches in my life – He has always made a plan for me…. and believe that He will do it again…. I also have to express how grateful I am for the life he has lent to me – I hope that I will be as good a role model for my children as my father was for me. Once again Lord – thank you for always being there even though I am not perfect.

Mike February 22, 2016 at 12:46 pm

These verses are what I needed. I am a Christian who got lost at one point and closed the door to Christ. I got into some things that I am not proud of, and now I am facing charges and possible incarceration. What’s worse is that I have two sons, a 3 year old and an 11 month old who might be without their father for a period of time. Not to mention my wonderful wife, whom I have hurt but has forgiven me. Now our bond is stronger than ever. This has been the wake up call of a lifetime, but we both believe that this happened for a reason. And that reason is to finally have God back in my life, really both our lives. I just pray that my two boys don’t have to grow up without a father. We have lost our house, our dogs, most likely my job is next. I PRAY and ask the Lord to guide us through this crisis, finding a way for us to remain a family, for that is what matters most in life: the freedom to live with and cherish our own family.I am a good person who got lost, but now I am found. PLEASE pray for us.

God Bless

bob saget February 24, 2016 at 1:33 am

Please God help me through this crisis i’m going through. I don’t think there is a second chance for me no matter how much I cry out. But I guess I have to face the music. I just hope god helps me not give up.

Liliana Garcia November 11, 2016 at 10:52 am

My husband left 2 weeks ago I have been going to church and praying for his heart of stone he use to pray to what they call the Santisima and of coarse I kept telling him the Gods power was a lot stronger than she was I told him he had to leave her alone that she was nothing and he said he was scared that she would harm us but I was sure that she had no power over us Gods Power is the best Power we can have but when I believed thing were goin better he leaves me and my 2 daughters I love him and my daughter too I want God to make him understand theres is nothing God wont take control of all he has to do Is have Faith but how can I explain that if he hasn’t called us since he left please pray for God to restore our marriage and he will come back with a heart of flesh

Jack Wellman November 11, 2016 at 11:52 am

Hello Liliana. I am so very sorry for your terrible heartbreak and for your precious girls. You are correct in saying the Santisima has no power. Satan is a liar and he works through these false prophets and they try to “bluff” people into thinking they have power and can cause harm, but like Satan, they are liars. Pray for their souls. These people will face God’s wrath for what they’ve done. Just keep praying and your daughters too, and I will as well. Faith is best developed in the dark…and only later do we see that God was always working things out for our own good (Rom 8:28). Let’s pray for his heart to be changed by God and that he has, as you said, a heart of flesh. May God richly bless you my sister in Christ.

Diane December 31, 2016 at 7:16 am

I am a christian and I am in my sixties,I have made so many wrong decisions throughout my life. Most of them for selfish reasons which has left my life in turmoil. I prayed for success in starting my own business and it failed. I worked so hard and I prayed everyday for help and then there was nothing left. I feel like to total failure. I can’t keep the tears back even now. I love the Lord and know that sometimes He don’t answer pray in our time, but will never stop praying for His guidance. Please pray for me that I may find success in starting a business, I believe it’s never too late when you believe in the Mighty One Our Lord and Savior.

God is able to do the what we let go and let him work out in all of the struggles, concerns, losses, and or circumstances in our lives. I believe that God is molding and sharpening me in the midst of this trying time I have been going through and will be out of it very soon. He is preparing me for Greater! I hope, pray, ask, and seek him first for all my needs. I am weary. I still press forward and look forward to greener pastures. Live for today..

I used a few of these verses in a card that I made for a person with cancer. I haven’t heard about how they affected the person yet, for this was recently, but I hope that it has encouraged him.
