20 Key Bible Verses From The Book of Job

Job is one of my absolute favorite books of the Bible.  Job showed us a great model of what we should all look like in the face of the storms and tragedies of this life. Of course, he is human and he did realize his faults at the end of the book, but his reactions to the death and suffering around him just amaze me!  He was an amazing man!  Here are 20 key Bible verses from the book of Job!

Characteristics of Job

Job 1:1 – “There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil.”

Job was blameless, meaning no sin was found in him.  Therefore, we can assume that he took sin very seriously and repented immediately when he knew he was in the wrong.  He didn’t try to keep his sin under control; he got rid of it through repentance immediately!  His fear of God was great.

Job 1:5 – “And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them (his kids), and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all.  For Job said, ‘It may be that my children have sinned, and cursedGod in their hearts.’  Thus Job did continually.”

Job loved and cared about his kids that he consecrated them every morning with burnt offerings.  How about it!  That is love!

Job 1:20 – “Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshipped.”

The backstory to this verse is that all of his children had just been killed.  He didn’t get angry when he heard the news, he fell down and worshipped!  What an awesome display of faith and trust in God!

Satan’s Limitations

Job 1:12 – “And the Lord said to Satan, ‘Behold, all that he has is in your hand.  Only against him do not stretch out your hand.’  So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.”

Satan cannot do whatever he wants with us.  God’s sovereignty stretches out to Satan too.  Satan is only allowed to do what God allows him to do!  Pretty awesome!  It shows even more the power of God and how Satan is powerless against Him!

God Chooses

Job 1:8 – “And the Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?’”

Yes, God puts us to the test to refine us.  He isn’t to blame for anything bad that happens to us.  He is to be praised at the growth we experience in the storms He allows to come at us.

God puts us to the test to refine us.

God puts us to the test to refine us.

Job’s Loyalty

Job 2:9-10 – “Then his (Job) wife said to him, ‘Do you still hold fast to your integrity?  Curse God and die!’  But he said to her, ‘You speak as one of the foolish women would speak.  Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?’  In all of this Job did not sin with his lips.”

Job had his priorities straight.  It’s God first!  He didn’t side with his wife because she was in blatant sin and blasphemy in her remarks to him.

The Meat Of The Book

Job 6:11 – “What is my strength, that I should wait?  And what is my end, that I should be patient?”

Human emotion got the best of Job, one of the most God fearing men ever.  It’s ok to be down and struggle.  God understands your pain.

Job 9:2 – “Truly I know that it is so: But how can a man be in the right before God?”

Only through the atoning blood of Christ can you be right in the eyes of God.  If you haven’t given your life to Christ, please consider it today!

Job 12:13 – “With God are wisdom and might; He has counsel and understanding.”

With God as your source, you will gain wisdom and understanding.

Job 16:2 – “I have heard many such things; miserable comforters are you all.”

Job said this to his three “friends” that should have tried to comfort and pray with him.  Instead they kept condemning him and blaming him for his calamity.  May it be that we never treat our friends in this manner!  Show love always!

Job 22:13 – “But you say, ‘what does God know?  Can He judge through the deep darkness?”

Yes indeed!  God is everywhere and can see through the darkest/hardest hearts.  He sees everyone’s intentions.  “Has it ever occurred to you that nothing occurs to God?” (Adrian Rogers)

Job 23:13-14 – “But He is unchangeable, and who can turn Him back?  What He desires, that He does.  For He will complete what He appoints for me, and many such things are in His mind.”

God is sovereign over every single thing.

Job 27:3-4 – “As long as my breath is in me, and the Spirit of God is in my nostrils, my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit.”

This is how we all should live.  The tongue is very powerful and persuasive.  May it never be that we use it for sinful pursuits!

When God Speaks…

Job 38:3 – “Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you will make it known to me.”

God’s way never changes and He will require us all to make an account of our lives when we leave earth into eternity.  If you leave earth without accepting Jesus, I have a feeling your account may start with God speaking this way.  Don’t wait another day to receive Jesus!

Job 38:36 – “Who has put wisdom in the inward parts or given understanding to the mind?”

This is a rhetorical question from God to showcase His power and wisdom.

Job 40:2 – “Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty?  He who argues with God, let him answer it.”

We are all found guilty and to argue with God that we are not is an absolute lie.  “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)

3 Condemning Friends

Eliphaz: Job 22:5 – “Is not your evil abundant?  There is no end to your iniquities.”

Job had not sinned to receive the pain and misery he was receiving and Eliphaz should have listened to Job instead of accusing him of endless sins.

Bildad: Job 18:5 – “Indeed, the light of the wicked is put out, and the flame of his fire does not shine.”

Instead of trying to comfort and pray with Job, Bildad proclaimed that Job was a wicked man.

Zophar: Job 11:20 – “But the eyes of the wicked will fail; all way of escape will be lost to them, and their hope is to breathe their last.”

Again there is condemnation.  Zophar declared that Job was a wicked man because he was not repenting of his sin.  He should have listened to Job and believed him instead of calling him wicked and declaring that his “way of escape will be lost.”

Job’s Understanding

Job 42:2, 5-6 – “I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted.  I had heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You, therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

Job finally understood.  Whether we are in sin or not, God does what He wills to do.  Nothing can stop the plans of the Lord.  He is sovereign over all things.

Conclusion

If you have never read through the entire book of Job I encourage you to check it out.  The ending gives me goose bumps every time.  When God shows up to speak, the real meaning of the book comes alive.  God bless you all as you live a life worthy of the calling!
