Why You Cannot Hide Your Sin

No matter who you are or what your position in life, you are a sinner. Thankfully, we can be a sinner saved by grace. The simple fact of the matter is that we sin because we are a sinners. Even when you try to hide it! I say, “try to hide it” because you cannot hide your sin. Look at how that Bible reminds us of this reality.

Examples of Our Inability to Conceal Sin

Genesis 3:8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

Joshua 7:21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.

Proverbs 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

Isaiah 29:15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, And their works are in the dark, And they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?

Isaiah 30:1–2 Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, That take counsel, but not of me; And that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, That they may add sin to sin: That walk to go down into Egypt, And have not asked at my mouth; To strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, And to trust in the shadow of Egypt!

You May Think Sins Are Secret But God Knows

2 Kings 17:9 And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.

Job 10:14 If I sin, then thou markest me, And thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.

Job 14:16 For now thou numberest my steps: Dost thou not watch over my sin?

Job 24:16 In the dark they dig through houses, Which they had marked for themselves in the daytime: They know not the light.

Psalm 19:12 Who can understand his errors? Cleanse thou me from secret faults.

Psalm 90:8 Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, Our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.

Ezekiel 8:12 Then said he unto me, Son of man, hast thou seen what the ancients of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the chambers of his imagery? for they say, The LORD seeth us not; the LORD hath forsaken the earth.

Amos 5:12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: They afflict the just, they take a bribe, And they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

Ephesians 5:12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

Sins by Another Name – Works of Darkness

Job 24:14 The murderer rising with the light Killeth the poor and needy, And in the night is as a thief.

Proverbs 7:8–10 Passing through the street near her corner; And he went the way to her house, In the twilight, in the evening, In the black and dark night: And, behold, there met him a woman With the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.

John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

Romans 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

1 Thessalonians 5:7 For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

No Excuses – Sin is Sin

Even in Secret

Genesis 4:8–10 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother’s keeper? And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.

Even in Haste

Genesis 25:32 And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

Even though it is hidden for many years

Genesis 42:21 And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.

Even when provoked by others

1 Kings 21:7 And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.1 Kings 21:20 And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee: because thou hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.

Even under the influence

Daniel 5:1–2 Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and drank wine before the thousand. Belshazzar, whiles he tasted the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein.

Even when others approve of it

Mark 14:10–11 And Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them. And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

Even when it is done out of ignorance

Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Final Thoughts

Every human suffers from the effects of sin. In fact, it is inherited from all the way back in The Garden. You can try to conceal it, you can try to keep sins secret believing that if they are secret they do not exist and you can try to make excuses. The fact remains we are all subject to sin and we all have a choice to walk in it or not. I like how Paul puts it “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) Ephesians 5:8-9.
