The Many Animals Listed in the Bible

Sometimes it is just fun to pick something out of the air and see what the Bible says about it. We have 3 lovable pets in our home and I think it is safe to say we are animal lovers. So today, I want to share with you the many animals that I have found in the Bible. Let me know if I missed any.

Listing of Animals – Clean and Unclean

The LORD told Moses and Aaron which animals were clean (okay to eat) and which were unclean (no able to be eaten). You can read about it in Leviticus 11:1-47

Apes

1 Kings 10:22 For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks.

Asses (Donkey)– Genesis 22:3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

Bears – 1 Samuel 17:34–35 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

Behemoth ( Elephant) – Job 40:15 Behold now behemoth, Which I made with thee; He eateth grass as an ox.

Bullocks – Exodus 29:11 And thou shalt kill the bullock before the LORD, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.Exodus 29:36 And thou shalt offer every day a bullock for a sin offering for atonement: and thou shalt cleanse the altar, when thou hast made an atonement for it, and thou shalt anoint it, to sanctify it.

Calf – Genesis 18:7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hasted to dress it.

Camels (also called Dramedaries) – Genesis 12:16 And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.

Cattle – Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Chameleon – Leviticus 11:30 And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.

Conies – Leviticus 11:5 And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

Deer – Deuteronomy 14:5 The hart, and the roebuck, and the fallow deer, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the wild ox, and the chamois.

Dogs – Deuteronomy 23:18 Thou shalt not bring the hire of a whore, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any vow: for even both these are abomination unto the LORD thy God.

Dragons – Deuteronomy 32:33 Their wine is the poison of dragons, And the cruel venom of asps.

Elephants (Ivory)

Foxes – Judges 15:4 And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails.

Kine (Cows) – Genesis 32:15 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

Lambs – Exodus 29:39–40 The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even: And with the one lamb a tenth deal of flour mingled with the fourth part of an hin of beaten oil; and the fourth part of an hin of wine for a drink offering.

Leopards – Song of Solomon 4:8 Come with me from Lebanon, my spouse, with me from Lebanon: Look from the top of Amana, from the top of Shenir and Hermon, From the lions’ dens, from the mountains of the leopards.

Lions – Judges 14:5 Then went Samson down, and his father and his mother, to Timnath, and came to the vineyards of Timnath: and, behold, a young lion roared against him.

Lizards – Leviticus 11:30 And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.

Mice – Leviticus 11:29–30 These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind, And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.

Mules – 2 Samuel 13:29 And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king’s sons arose, and every man gat him up upon his mule, and fled.

Oxen – Exodus 21:28 If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit.

Pygarg (Like an antelope)– Deuteronomy 14:4–5 These are the beasts which ye shall eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat, The hart, and the roebuck, and the fallow deer, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the wild ox, and the chamois.

Rams – Genesis 15:9 And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.

Swine (Pigs) – Leviticus 11:7 And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.

Unicorn (Wild Ox) – Numbers 23:22; Deuteronomy 33:17; Job 39:9; Psalms 29:6; Isaiah 34:7

Vipers

Job 20:16 He shall suck the poison of asps: The viper’s tongue shall slay him.

Isaiah 30:6 The burden of the beasts of the south: Into the land of trouble and anguish, From whence come the young and old lion, The viper and fiery flying serpent, They will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, And their treasures upon the bunches of camels, To a people that shall not profit them.

Weasel – Leviticus 11:29–30 These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind, And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.

Wolves – Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
