Can Satan Read Our Minds and Thoughts?

by Jack Wellman · Print Print · Email Email

Is it possible that Satan can read our minds?  Can he hear our prayers?  What does Satan know when we pray or think?  What does the Bible say about this?

The Omniscient Jesus

Jesus can not only read our thoughts, He knows the intent of our hearts.  This is an attribute of God.  Look at how often Jesus knew not only what they were thinking but what their intent was:

Matthew 9:4 “Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts?

Matthew 12:23 “Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.

Luke 6:8 “But Jesus knew what they were thinking and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.”

Luke 9:47 “Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him.

John 2:25 “He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.”

It is obvious that Jesus, being God, can read our minds and our thoughts.  Psalm 139:2 declares,You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar” and so “would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart (Psalm 44:21)?  So clearly God knows our thoughts and can read our minds and know not only what we are thinking but what we are thinking about doing!  But what about Satan?  Can he read our minds?

Satan’s Power

There is no doubt Satan is the god (little “g”) of this world.  He rules over those who are not Christ’s.  He has blinded the minds of those who do not believe and he rules, under God’s sovereignty, even in high places.  He is the deceiver of the whole world with the exception of those who believe in Jesus Christ.  Just look at what our Enemy has power over:

2 Corinthians 4:4 “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

John 14:30 “I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me.

Revelation 12:9 “The great dragon was hurled down–that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

Ephesians 6:12 “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

Ephesians 2:1-2 “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.”

Satan’s Limited Power

For those who have yet to put their trust in Christ, they still have this prince of darkness as their ruler.

For those who have yet to put their trust in Christ, they still have this prince of darkness as their ruler.

When people say that they believe Satan is attacking them and I hear this quite often, I must inform them that Satan is not like God.  He can not read our mind.  That is an attribute of God.  Satan is not omniscient.  That is, he is not all-knowing.  Neither is he omnipotent. Only God is Omnipotent (all-powerful).  And finally, Satan is not omnipresent.  He is a created being.  He can not be in more than one place at a time anymore than we can be and so when two people say that they are being attacked by Satan at the same time, we know this can not be true.  It may be that the Enemy’s agents, fallen angels called demons, may be the culprit, but we should not give the Devil too much credit. He can’t be everywhere at once.  He can be directing his evil spirits to do his biding but he can not be everywhere at the same time and neither can he overcome His Creator, God.  And he certainly can not be all-knowing.  There is no biblical evidence that Satan can read our minds.

Jesus’ Victory Over Satan

Satan does know our weaknesses but this is from his observations.  He knows where we are weak in the flesh and so he accuses the brethren day and night before the very throne of God (Revelation 12:10) but this doesn’t matter, even though he may be right.  We are seen by God the Father as having Jesus’ righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:21) and so even though the Enemy accuses us and may want to sift us like wheat (Luke 22:31), God forgives us (1 John 1:9).  Anyway, Jesus has conquered the Devil as it is written,The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you (Romans 16:20).

Our High Priest understood that,Since the children have flesh and blood he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death (Hebrews 2:14-15) and Jesus disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross (Colossians 2:15).  Jesus testified that the prince of this world now stands condemned (John 16:1b).

The Devil has been defeated, Jesus conquered him, and by His sinless life, sacrifice, and death, has the right to rule over the world and the Kingdom of Heaven and one day believers will finally see an end to the adversary for all time.  For those who have yet to put their trust in Christ, they still have this prince of darkness as their ruler. He desires to bring as many to hell as possible, yet once a person believes in Jesus Christ, they have escaped this eternal separation from God.  Jesus has destroyed death itself (2 Timothy 1:10, Romans 8:2) and He tells all who would believe in Him, I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this (John 11:25-26)?  I pray you do believe for there is no other way to escape the wrath of God than by trusting in the only name given to us by which we can be saved and that is Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).

We have several articles about Satan and his angels in the following collection under the title “Angels & Demons”, take a look:

Thank You Jack, everyone needs to be reminded of this and often. 1 John 4:4 “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” It is awesome to know that we can overcome all his attacks if we are in relationship with Him, staying in tune with the Spirit in us. Then we can recognize the attacks when they come.

Jack Wellman May 22, 2013 at 10:36 am

Amen Mr. Jansen…that is so good about staying in tune with the Spirit. I thank God for you sir and appreciate your words of wisdom.

Thank you for clearing some things up for me. I honestly thought that Satan did know what I am thinking and I am glad he can’t read my thoughts or that he can’t be in 2 places at once. It makes sense when you think of him as a fallen angel. God’s angels can’t read our minds or be in 2 different places at the same time either. Great job as always brother! I always learn from you. God bless!

Jack Wellman May 25, 2013 at 6:26 pm

Thanks Derek. As always, you are more than too kind and to be sure, all glory and honor to our Great Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Hello Elakhe. Thank you so much for your words of encouragement and blessing too.

i am having these nonstop thoughts everytime i pray read or meditate onthe bible, like “am i believing?’ or “i dont want to meditate. i have been trying to get rid of them by ignoring it or trying to let god help me but it seems to be making it worse and it really hurts my relationship with goid cause these are very discouraging thoughts and cant even seem to enjoy god cause of these thoughts they are making me very discouraged and worried cause i have been having these thoughts for months. i want to know if it is satan so i can deal with the problem properrly, cause i dont think it is anything else. If not satan then i dont know where cause i dont even have to think about these thoughts they just pop up and i try and not focus on them but at the same time the bible and it is hard cause i feel like i am doing it on my own.

Jack Wellman November 26, 2013 at 6:25 pm

Satan wants to discourage you so its not from God. Satan can NOT read your mind. I strongly urge you to talk to your pastor about this and tell him just what you told me. Singing praises, staying in the Bible and praying are all going to help. We ALL get these from the enemy. If you are worried, then you are basically telling God I don’t trust you. I will pray for you friend.

ONE-THIRD of all angels fell / followed satan..they are demons…(there are so many angels they are referred to as innumerable in Hebrews 12:22 …so you can imagine how many demons exist)
The demonic realm DEFINITELY attacks / tempts / and brings condemning thoughts (amongst countless other “wiles) against the Christian.

I don’t think we should split hairs over whether it’s the Devil or his demons attacking us…the reality is that it’s very real and more active than most pastors comment or properly address.
* I can tell you first hand that I’ve experience “countless” mental attacks in my Christian walk and continue to.

Here is one of many good websites that addresses the VERY REAL and active attacks by the demonic on Christians:

Debbie January 24, 2014 at 11:36 pm

I’m not so sure…angels can and do communicate by thoughts only and satan is a (fallen) angel….

Joe August 25, 2014 at 2:30 am

I was having so many questions but after reading this article most of them are cleared. Thanks a lot Father! may god bless you.. Amen (:

Barry August 25, 2014 at 2:24 pm

Demons can read our minds…. and are very observant to the immediate details of a situation…and very quick to respond and plant thoughts and impulses in us.
And just to give an example of how prevalent and present the Satanic/demonic forces are present we can read the account of how shortly after Peter had been given revelation by the Holy Spirit – Matthew 16:16 … how just moments later Satan -observing what was being said amongst the disciples PLANTED the thought in Peter’s mind to rebuke Jesus – Matthew 16:22-23

Jack Wellman August 25, 2014 at 2:56 pm

Thank you Barry for your observation and opinion. Demons are very observant and see the details of a situation and can hear what we say and what we are doing and yes, they are quick to respond to plant impulses and thoughts, but do demons have omniscience? Really? Are any created being able to read minds? Satan did observe Peter, and head his words and observed his actions but this one verse does not provide evidence that Satan read Peter’s minds. Peter wanted Jesus to avoid the cross, just like Satan did in the temptation in the wilderness to “bow down before me and all these kingdoms of the world can be yours.” Satan did implant the thought but what biblical evidence is there that Satan read his mind from Matt 16:22-23? I see nothing like this else occurring in the Bible. Could you provide evidence Scripture other than this one since it never insinuates or states as a fact that Satan read Peter’s mind? Isn’t reading our minds only an attribute of God?

Eric November 18, 2014 at 3:10 am

Hi Jack Wellman, great article very informative, I love how you back it up with the bible!

I have a question…

Ok so cars have a governor in them to control there speed (limit), is there any chance (you believe) God designed us with one as well? I have a theory that we are held back (for our own good) right now and when we go to heaven we will have our full power. At that point I’m thinking we will use 100% of our brain and will have the power to move objects, maybe even fly. What’s your thoughts here? I know this theory of mine is a bit out there, but a interesting thought I believe. God Bless!!

Jack Wellman November 18, 2014 at 7:46 am

Eric, I have no idea how to answer this because it is hard to answer a theoretical question with a concrete answer. It is possible I suppose and yes, it makes sense that God held this brain power back for our own good because He knew we’d probably be destroying and harming each other. As for having that power, I cannot say because I have nothing to go on…I can only guess. Thanks friend.

Larry Penn April 14, 2015 at 2:14 pm

Pastor Wellman,
Thanks for this enlightening article. I knew that satan (small “s” is used purposely) has limited power and this article along with Scripture validates this fact. I am so glad that he can’t read our minds but also must be careful to his observation of human beings for thousands of years. He (satan) does know how to manipulate those who are blind to the light of Jesus Christ (God). God bless you.

Jack Wellman April 14, 2015 at 2:40 pm

Thank you so much sir and I like the small “s” use because of his limited power. Very nicely said sir.

Frederick Serna August 22, 2016 at 7:43 am

I beg to differ on this topic. I didn’t think that Satan could not read minds but in my experience I found out that he can. First let me honestly say I was a pseudo Christian. Christian on the outside. You know put on a happy face and pretend to be that strong positive guy that everyone admires. No church but kept that righteous look. I didn’t even cuss nor did I complain about my life, wife, family or work. Everything was just perfect like me. Oh, no porn magazines or such literature. But deep down inside I had turmoil. I hated my bosses and I wasn’t happy at home. I had deep dark thoughts against my bosses. As for home I didn’t really hate my family I just wasn’t happy. But I had other thoughts about being with someone new and young. Oh, wouldn’t go out an cheat but thought about it. We had this new female kitten that would follow me everywhere in the home. Maybe she felt I needed her company. But sometimes I would think wouldn’t it be cool if she could be transformed into a beautiful young girl just like in Bewitched. You know that black magic stuff. Anyway I had ordered a catalog from Blackhawk a company that made military style backpacks and web gear. Basically hiking equipment for police/military use. One evening I came from work and found that two catalogs had arrived. So I quickly went to my office (bathroom) to look through it. Of course the little kitten followed. The kitten was just playing while I opened the envelope and pulled out the catalog and started looking at all the cool stuff. I noticed the kitten stopped playing and was hissing at the bathroom door. I thought it might be the dog. So I put the catalog back in the envelope and got up to check the door. Nothing. The kitten was playing again. So I sat back down and started to look through the catalog again. The kitten once again started hissing at the door. I put the catalog back in the envelope and got up to check again. I checked to see where the dog was. He was with the kids in the living room and no no one was in the bedroom. I started to check to see if maybe another critter was in the room. Nothing. Dinner is ready. The next night I came home and back to my office with kitten and catalog. I started to read the catalog again and the kitten started hissing. I put the catalog back in the envelope to check out the door again. I checked the bedroom for anything living that could get a kitten hissing. I couldn’t find a snake or lizard or bugs. I went back in and sat down. I started again to check out the catalog. The kitten again started to hiss. I thought what the? So put the catalog back in the envelope and the kitten stopped hissing. I pulled the catalog out again and kitten started hissing. I did this several times just to make sure. I’m glad I didn’t open the door with the catalog being out of the envelope. I quickly put the catalog back in the envelop. I grabbed the other unopened catalog and threw them both in the trash can outside. It gave me the chills knowing that I had invited evil into my home. I knew right there that my dark thoughts had opened the door to evil. No my friends Satan can read your minds. Do not forget that Satan thought he was powerfull enough to challenge God for the thrown. Oh, one thing I failed the mention is that on the cover of the catalog was the owner of Blackhawk. He was an ex Navy SEAL. On the cover he was sitting at a desk with flames all around. Just like God Satan knows what you think. So be careful in what you are thinking. God bless you and think good thoughts.

Deanna Jackson October 16, 2019 at 9:24 pm

That was awesome explaination using scripture as reference! I’m a recent returner to the flock and I have been wondering if the liar can hear my thoughts. Your answer rings true in my spirit and makes perfect sense. That explains another one of many reasons why our words are so important! We probably give him so much ammo just with our very own words! God bless you and thanks so much!

Jack Wellman October 16, 2019 at 9:42 pm

Thank you so much for the encouraging words Deanna. I seem to always have ammo on hand, but I loved what Dr. Irwin Lutzer said, “When Satan reminds you of your past, remind him of his future (Rev 20).
