7 Important Bible Verses About Purpose

Sometimes we can be so busy about our lives that we forget the purpose behind them. We are driven by the demands of life and not realizing that God always has a greater purpose. His purposes not only encompass our lives, but the lives of those around us—at home, school, work, and community. It’s important to know and live out the following Bible verses about purpose:

God has a purpose for everyone

“But I have raised you up for this very purpose, that I might show you my power and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth” (Exodus 9:16).

Pharaoh mistakenly thought that he was in control. However, God put him in the place of being an Egyptian leader for His purpose. God has a purpose for everyone—including those who resist Him. Ultimately God will get the glory no matter the person because He is the Giver of purpose in every life whether they live for Him or not. 

7 Important Bible Verses About Purpose

God’s purpose can’t be undone

“I know that you can do all things; no purpose of yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2). 

Once God has established His purposes for our lives—no one can change it. What door God has shut, no man can open and what door God has opened, no man can shut. People will wear themselves out in efforts to make a situation turn badly for believers, yet God will still ultimately accomplish His plans. Christians can take courage that He is working everything for our good even the most difficult life situations.

God’s purpose is the one that lasts

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21).

The lives of men and women are but a vapor; however, God’s purposes can be fulfilled throughout multiple generations. We can make our plans and set out to see them accomplished, but if we don’t pray and seek God’s direction—we could find ourselves drifting in an ocean of problems without a sail. Every plan should begin and end with God in mind first.

Every person is born with purpose

“The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out” (Proverbs 20:5).

All people are made in the image of God. Each of us are born with a purpose and calling that we can discover or completely miss. The influence of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers gives us insight to His purposes for us. We find peace and courage when we sense the confirmation of the Spirit that we are in the right place at the right time of our designated calling.

God fulfills His purpose for believers

“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (Philippians 2:12-13).

God’s greater purpose has to always be on the forefront of our minds. We may be offered employment, school, and marriage opportunities that may not fit in God’s purpose. This takes wisdom on our part to wait on God’s peace before making presumptuous decisions that may have lifetime ramifications. There’s great joy in the discovery of His purpose when we trust in Him rather than on our feelings or pressures from other people. 

God works through all situations to fulfill His purpose

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

Hard times can make it difficult to see God’s purpose especially when we only feel pain and grief. Many times we don’t want to be reminded that God is working our difficulty for our good. However if we practice living our lives with the mindset that God is working things out for us, we can have smoother transition of accepting this truth in the hard places.

God has a greater purpose in saving us

“He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace” (2 Timothy 1:9).

Salvation is only the beginning for Christians as we were saved to do good works in the name of Jesus. The promise of eternity and living free from the bondage of sin is a wonderful gift of salvation. These promised blessings free us up to be about God’s business every day. We need to start our mornings with a prayer asking God to reveal to us His purposes for that day.

Perfect Purposes

The Lord and His purposes are perfect, but we are not. We are assailed by doubts and fears that many times keep us from living out the purposes that He has established for us. However, we can overcome this by consistently reading and studying His word so that our faith will be made stronger day by day. As we learn of God and pray to Him regularly, we become more embolden to accomplish great purposes in His name.

Talk with your pastor or your youth minister. Also, does your school have a guidance counselor? Seek the counsel of others is all I can tell you. The first and most important thing is, “Have you repented of your sins and trusted in Christ?”

What a great article. This really helped me. It’s definitely hard in the tough times to see, but God is really working all things out for our good. It can see like forever, but through the process He is equipping us for His purpose, but we must not give up, we must finish the race.

God’s will: God’s will for our life is inescapable. There is no need for so-called Bible-educated theologians to tell their audience to find out what is God’s will for their life, as if these theologians have superior knowledge about God or have special access to God. The fact is that God’s will for each person’s life is their life, with the ultimate objective being each person’s salvation. Do you want to know what is God’s will is for your life? Then follow your conscience, for God’s will is embedded in your conscience.

Thank you Mr. Anderson, but not everyone can find God’s will that easily. All we can attempt to do is to show them where God’s revealed will is in the Word, and then let the hidden will of God work out, as its none of our business anyway. I would not follow your conscience alone, because God’s Spirit and God’s Word have authority unlike our conscience, because we could be wrong.

There is no such thing as free will outside of God’s will. Man’s absolute free will or absolute initiative does not exist in the universe. A person’s free will is really not “free” will but a will that is “relative” to his or her past, a past that has been orchestrated by God. This means everything that happens to us is either God’s will or God’s consent, so stop asking if it’s God’s will or what God’s will is. God’s will is embedded in our conscience. Follow your conscience and you will do God’s will. Go against your conscience and you will do things which God has consented for you. You can follow your conscience, which is 100% always right because your conscience is God’s will for you. You can certainly go against your conscience, which means to go against God’s will. But, to say that our conscience can be wrong is to say that God’s will can be wrong (that’s a no no). In the end, God will get you to where He wants you to be — on your knees. God’s will is inescapable.

Thank you Mr. Anderson. I agree…God’s will is going to always be done…our will, not so much. The reason I say our conscience can be wrong is that it is subjective, and not like God’s Word, objective, but I would rather call it “human responsibility” rather than freewill. The Bible does teach that whosoever may come and whosoever believes will be saved. Jesus gives everyone only two choices: “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him’ (John 3:36). People are responsible for rejecting Jesus and for trusting in Him. Our decisions lay within the will of God, whether we know it or not, so both human responsibility and God’s sovereignty are both true and are not opposed to one another.

I couldn’t help but read your comments and have so many scriptures overflow within my spirit… 1. I must agree with the author we don’t all receive Jesus the same way some it takes a little longer or need the teaching of a chosen willing vessel to elaborate upon the word, that why scripture reads he gives us teachers, evangelist, apostals, pastors, and prophets for the perfecting of the saints. 2. Our concise the scripture says the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked God asked who knows it? He answered his own question I know it. John speaks about men loving darkness rather than light… Mr John with all do respect my concise was not and still not good enough to be my keeper because I can always justify my short comings but because Jesus wants Maximum Glory out of us he has sent us another manifestation of himself in/as the Holy Spirit to be our keeper, and teacher. It’s the love of Jesus that saves he said through love and kindness I have drawn thee not my concise. Study to show thy self approved rightly dividing the word of truth no where in any scripture did his word say anything about yielding to a concise if that was all it took there would be no reason for Christ on the cross. I have been a Christian for 41 years. Right now I am struggling with whether God knows what is best for our lives. We are supposed to accept everything that happens to us in our life. When I look back on my life I am really disappointed in the way things have turned out.

Thanks for this article — very much helpful on my journey. Heard the phrase about people in their 50’s losing their sense of purpose and here I am. I think when you get to this stage you have 20/20 on what’s behind you and also know that there’s a limited time to do more ahead of you. (and by limited, I actually don’t plan to stop – but as the last 30 years seemed fast, so likely will the next 30 years be, only faster!).

A daily practice of submission to God’s will ultimately end in His purpose being achieved in and through us. Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”
