Great work here again Derek. In my message this morning I mentioned when Paul and Silas were in prison they began singing hymns and that’s when the earthquake hit and they were freed. I do know that God inhabits the praises of His people yet even more so when these praises are during times of tribulation and griefs. Well done friend.

Derek Hill July 29, 2012 at 6:58 pm

Thank you Jack. i agree with you. God is worthy of praise all of the day. But, we really grow closer in the hard times when we praise Him. This is when our loyalty and devotion to God really shines and He always blesses that. This is also when others that know our faith can really understand that we do love God and possibly come to know Him as well. It is such an awesome witness to others.

Angela August 3, 2012 at 9:33 am

Thank you for your suggestions & personal sharing. I’ve been struggling with crippling anxiety and this morning I craved to discover ways to improve my relationship with God. God really used this article to provide me the peace I needed today.

Derek Hill August 3, 2012 at 4:54 pm

God is a healer Angela. Stay with Him for spiritual nourishment and guidance. He is the Lover of our soul!! Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you.(Psalm 55:22)

In His Name Always,

Hello Derek, as many have written above this article has blessed me. I’m in a seemingly overwhelming debt and I’m at the end of the deadline with no visible way out, I began to seek strengthening online this morning and I ran into this article. This article has helped me discover what God wants me to learn from this trial.. I particularly found Psalm 23 revealing… ‘Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me’ the rod is for chastising, the staff is for direction… Both are there to comfort us.. Like you wrote above, trials brings us closer to God, we should thank God for it for they are there to keep us in line and to remember that our God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we can ever ask or think..

alisa harvin August 3, 2012 at 10:46 am

i stumbled across this today by accident. I have been struggling with a nasty custody war in which i have grown bitter and want to “win”. but forgiveness is where winning really lies. I have custody of my children i should praise him. I should forgive as many times as their father does me wrong and that is hard to remember. thanks fo an amazing message

Derek Hill August 3, 2012 at 4:59 pm

Thank you Alisa. Forgiveness is the key to your healing. If you hold onto hate and bitterness, it will eat at your soul. Give everything to God. He can carry you through the darkest times of your life. Stay in the Word and prayer!! There is power in both!

God Bless!

Ajayi kayode August 6, 2012 at 3:54 am

Thank you very much, but how can a person pray to God during the hard time?in order to overcome it.

Derek Hill August 6, 2012 at 12:15 pm

Hello Ajayi. I quoted a passage from Psalm 55:22 to Angela above, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you.” A heavy heart carries the burden alone. What ever tragedy or hard time comes, tell God about it. Give it to Him. Rely on His love and tender care to carry you through it. He will never leave nor forsake you. We don’t always get the answer we want, though. When praying, ask God, “Father, what do you want me to learn from this hard time?” instead of, “Father please take this hard time away from me.” He will show you what you should learn and you will draw closer to Him because of it. When you approach God with an attitude of “God knows what is best for me,” your spirit will grow tremendously. God Bless you!

In His Name Always,

Mador Isa August 9, 2012 at 9:37 am

I am finding it difficult to pray these days, i need your advise.

Derek Hill August 9, 2012 at 9:42 pm

Hello Mador. Romans 8:26 says, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” The Holy Spirit will groan for you when you approach the throne in prayer. Satan loves it when we get down or feel ashamed or guilty about things we have done or things that have been done to us. God loves us all so much. Go to Him in prayer. Know that He yearns for you to come to Him because He loves you. Whatever you are going through, God can take you through it and you will be closer to Him if you completely trust Him. God bless you.

In His Name Always,

I’ve recently been through a series of bad events, I stopped counting at 8, every time something went wrong I stayed calm and hoped that it would be the last, but soon after something new happens.
Needless to say I eventually got pretty fed up and frustrated cause most of these events were beyond my control.
Basically just waiting out the storm now, nothing else I can do, but it surely does not help for a positive and peaceful mindset.

Derek Hill September 2, 2012 at 4:47 pm

Hello Christof. I am sorry to hear about what you are going through. I really encourage you to seek God in prayer. Ask God what He wants you to learn from the trials that you are going through. When you cling to God in suffering, you will always grow closer to Him through it. It can be hard to be positive when you are in the storm. I would also encourage you to talk with your closest Christian friends or a pastor at your church(if you have one). Get them involved in prayer for you. Prayer is powerful. I am actually in the biggest storm of my life right now. I am in your place right now. Everything that is happening to me is out of my control, but I can say that God is good and He has provided for me every step of the way. Don’t lose faith brother. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. (Phil 4:13)

In His Name Always,

Christof September 2, 2012 at 6:38 pm

Thanks Derek, yes indeed, if only we knew there was a purpose behind this, if we knew God was trying to teach us a life skill or something, then the suffering would be very valuable… do we know its God testing us, could it not also be “something else” trying to reap havoc in our lives, or could it be stupid mistakes/decision that we make – every action has a reaction… as you can see I’ve investigated a lot of avenues already 🙂

Derek Hill September 2, 2012 at 6:45 pm

I am convinced that anything that comes our way from Satan is because God allows it to bring us closer to Him. When you read the book Job. You can get a better picture of this. Every time Satan wants to cause harm to Job or his family, God puts limitations on it. Satan can only give us whatever God allows. So, keep fighting the good fight and know that God is in control of even what Satan is allowed. God will be with you sir. God Bless!

Ramya December 4, 2012 at 3:39 am

hi sir,its true sir.ur msgs r very encouraging.pls mail ur msgs 2 me.

Derek Hill July 25, 2013 at 8:38 pm

Bless you and thank you!

Asesela October 2, 2012 at 8:44 pm

Dear Derek
I am currently in a very tight financial situation (in debt), reading through the Word of God and looking at the comments here gives me courage that God is there to help us. i know nothing else can surpassed Gods love in times of trials and heaviness.

Derek Hill October 2, 2012 at 9:01 pm

Amen Asesela! Calling on God when you are suffering will bring you closer to Him. I encourage you to find someone you can pray with daily. Someone that will encourage you on your journey out of debt. You are absolutely right. Nothing surpasses God’s love in times of trials and heaviness. God wants nothing but the best for His children, so stay strong in Him and He will guide you through this.

Asesela October 2, 2012 at 9:19 pm

thanks Derek for the encouragement. Please if you do have some free time, do also pray for me.. with thanks and blessings.

Derek Hill October 2, 2012 at 9:24 pm

Absolutely! I will pray for you. Blessings upon you and your family.

Asesela October 3, 2012 at 4:32 pm

thanks for the prayer, iam feeling the blessings of God right now even though the financial crisis is still there. Genesis 22: 14 … Jehovah Jireh … in the mountains it shall be seen. believing that through trials God can still bless us.. please do continually pray for my family as we go through this trials.
With thanks and blessings

Derek Hill October 3, 2012 at 4:54 pm

I will keep praying. I was actually praying for you on my way to work this morning. Keep your trust in God. I am almost out of a huge storm in my life right now. It has lasted about 14 months and will be over shortly. I have really experienced true blessings from our loving Father. He is good all of the time. Blessings on your family.

Asesela October 3, 2012 at 9:20 pm

Thanks for the prayer this morning. Actually i just left home on my way to work with my son this morning when a police officer call us to ride with him in his vehicle dropping us closer to my workplace. Not only that, i was even given a free lunch pack by a colleague today. I can feel that God was working through your prayers to bless me today. Thank you Jesus and thank you Derek

Derek Hill October 3, 2012 at 9:30 pm

God has perfect timing 🙂

Asesela October 4, 2012 at 3:58 pm

Praise the Lord, Greetings Derek, thanks for the prayer we are experiencing Gods blessings. just a question is it OK for Christians to play tattslotto games or scratch and win. Please do advice me with the help of the holy spirit.

Jack Wellman October 4, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Hello Asesela. Sorry to interrupt my friend and I can’t speak for Derek. I don’t think an occasional scratch and win ticket may be a big deal but we have an article called “Is It a Sin for a Christian to Gamble?” at this link:

You might not agree but thought you might be interested. Derek may have a different opinion. Sorry Derek. I know this is not my article but thought I’d chime in on this subject since we have an article that addresses this. Thanks all.

Derek Hill October 4, 2012 at 7:04 pm

Always feel free to chime in Jack. As long as truth is spoken, that is what matters. No worries 🙂

Hello again Asesela. I feel the same way as Jack. Buying a scratch off ticket every now and then is ok. The problem is when it becomes a habitual issue. Don’t forget that your money really is not your money. It is God’s money and we should always try to use it wisely. If we keep buying tickets to win back what we have lost, then there is a cycle that is hard to break. I encourage you to buy these tickets every once in a while and not even once a week. I watched my friend lose $27 on tickets he bought today. Now he is out of that money.

Asesela October 7, 2012 at 5:20 pm

Thanks Derek , there is an air of excitement flowing over me lately as i started to read and meditate on the word of God. Feeling excited , thanks for the prayer and encouragement it has been a source of strength to my spiritual growth, and i always look forward to this website daily. Please as i have requested earlier, do continually pray for me and the family, we quite really needed it right now as we grow into the Lord.

Derek Hill October 7, 2012 at 6:25 pm

I am so glad you are encouraged and can feel God working in your life! I will keep praying. Blessings upon all of your family.

celine October 15, 2012 at 10:58 am

I am so troubled and am caught between husband and family idont know what to do
Pls advoce

Derek Hill October 15, 2012 at 1:55 pm

Hello Celine. I don’t know your situation but I do know what God says in His Word. When you got married, you made a choice to leave your family and cleave to your husband. (Gen 2:24) I recommend standing by your husband because he is more important then the rest of your family. He is the one that you have committed your life to here on earth. I know all about issues with in-laws and immediate family and I learned over the years that the Bible is true. Your mate is your companion for life here and they deserve your all. Blessings upon you, for I know it is difficult right now. Stay in constant prayer to God and keep looking to Him for guidance.

Asesela October 31, 2012 at 6:22 pm

Hi Derek , im happy to know that God cares. i read an article about forgiveness on this website and it really pushes me up to love God and to have the heart of forgiveness. i encountered a very critical situation that really tested my forgiving spirit. it was really hard.. and i still going throughit.. Pliz do keep praying for me. i really need your prayer support

Derek October 31, 2012 at 8:49 pm

You bet Asesela. I will definitely keep praying for you. I would encourage you to keep Philippians 4:13 on your heart, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Forgiveness can be tough, but when you don’t forgive, it hurts you even more. Stay strong in the Lord and you will make it through this tough time.

elissa February 17, 2013 at 2:39 am

Thanks for the six ways to praise God during hard times. I was looking for something to speak on in my church. I have to speak for five to ten minutes. I can relate to hard times and will do my best to encourage others the same. God bless you.

Derek Hill February 17, 2013 at 10:22 am

Thank you Elissa. I know you will do fine on your speech as long as you prepare in advance and seek God’s will on what to speak. If my article can be of assistance, by all means please feel free to use anything you need from it. God bless you and your loved ones!

Angela February 26, 2013 at 1:55 pm

henry July 27, 2013 at 3:15 pm

In my present moment of despair iam confessing that the battle is not mine , but the Lord’s. Join me in agreement so that we together can overcome my fears and let God exercise his mercy and protection. Henry

Derek Hill July 27, 2013 at 3:47 pm

I absolutely agree! The battle is the Lord’s! Here is a verse that I would like to share with you for encouragement. “The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty One who will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you by His love; He will exult over you with loud singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17) Our God loves us dearly and He is a mighty One who can save! I encourage you to pray earnestly and ask God what lessons you can learn from the trial you are in. There are always lessons to learn in trials. Blessings on you! I am going to pray for you right now 🙂

Lucky August 15, 2013 at 4:38 am

Thank you derek, l came across this article and it has truly lifted my faith, l had trial after trial. Im an orphan left alone, at times l used to ask God what He wants me to do. I’ve never lived a life like other, l hope God has a plan for me. I’ve been a preacher man but faced tough trials, lm still young(Crying) l want to enjoy like other young fellows. Sometime l just wish l could go far and stay there alone, why do l have that feeling? I know God will speak through you

Derek Hill August 15, 2013 at 8:19 pm

Hello Lucky! I want to encourage you to stay strong in your faith and to keep preaching! Life does get tough. I definitely know from experience and I too have felt like moving far away to get away from all of the problems. But the truth is that trials and problems come to you no matter where you live, so keep asking God what He wants you to learn through the trials you face right now. I am doing the same in my own trials. “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect that you may be complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:2-4) God bless you brother. If you need specific prayer needs, let me know! I will pray for you!

Lucky August 17, 2013 at 1:54 pm

please pray for my family, l’ve been succefull several times but when l reach a certain level l fall and start from 0, it hurts me so bad. But l keep on having faith that Lord Jesus knows what lm going through and He strengthen me to keep on pushing but lm envy to live a happier live with no worries. Please pray for deliverance and breakthrough in my life. God bless

Derek Hill August 20, 2013 at 10:10 pm

Hello again, Lucky! I will keep praying for you brother. I applaud your willingness to stick it through this and love even when it hurts. This is encouraging to me! Prayers are on the way!

Lorraine August 23, 2013 at 10:46 pm

I’m going through a very difficult painful custody battle with the father of my 14 mnth old daughter. The father of my child and I dated for 7 years. When I told him I was expecting, he asked me to abort child and broke up with me. I went through pregnancy alone for the most part. He never went to any MD appointments. When I filed for child support , he served me with legal papers, he was awareded 50/50. He had mentioned to me he would fight for custody to not pay no child support. I have been in deep depression, that man is doing it for the money. Money has always been his god. My baby girl will be seperated from me unfairly. Him and his family have hurt me soooo deeply. I took the first step to forgive them. My heart, soul, and spirit are shattered because I know his true intentions.

Derek Hill August 25, 2013 at 3:46 pm

Lorraine, I am very sorry to hear of your troubles. I understand them all to well as my ex left me and I was given a bad hand through the divorce. I will pray for you! Money is such an evil thing when it becomes an idol to someone. Stay strong in your walk with God. Please don’t stop praying to Him, reading your Bible, and worshiping Him in your life. He has a plan for you even though you can’t see it. May God continue to watch and bless you through this painful time.

Lorraine August 23, 2013 at 10:49 pm

Please please please pray for me and my family. Also, for all our needs to be met and for God to touch my baby’s father’s heart. For that man is cold, selfish, arrogant, and prideful.

Derek Hill August 25, 2013 at 3:48 pm

I am praying right now for you Lorraine.

Barbara Ann November 9, 2013 at 3:34 am

Praise God!! Hello Derek. I was searching for ways to praise and worship our loving Father God, when I came across your article. The title caught my eye, “Ways to Praise God During Hard Times”. As always God has lead me to, not only what I was searching for, but also what I need. I too am experiencing hard times, but I count it all joy because I know the LORD our God is refining me. As I read the comments and statements, I said a prayer of thanks to God for you Derek. He blesses us through others and you have been a blessing to me this very moment. Halellujah!!! I am fully aware that God tests us out of love and for our own benefit and I thank Him for this, but I never thought to ask Him what it is He wants me to learn from the testing. Because of you, I have added this question to my prayers. Would you also pray that He reveals His lesson to me? May the Holy Spirit continue to work through you. In the love of Jesus, Barbara.

Derek Hill November 17, 2013 at 12:41 am

Hello Barbara! Thank you so much for your encouraging and kind comment! I will definitely pray for you. And thank you for praying for me as well! God bless you!

Joel November 28, 2013 at 9:27 pm

Thank you sir Derek for this wonderful work. God bless you sir!
Just want to share these words from the Darlene Zschech song titled “In Jesus Name”… I find it so powerful… @ Henry: Yes it is true that the battle is always for the Lord, God is always fighting for us. Even in very hard time of our life just call Jesus for there is power in His Name.

“In Jesus Name”
God is fighting for us,
God is on our side
He has overcome, yes
Hes has over come
We will not be shaken
We will not be moved
Jesus You are here.

Carrying our burdens,
Covering our shame
He has overcome, yes
Hes has over come
We will not be shaken
We will not be moved
Jesus You are here

I will live, I will not die
The resurrection power of Christ
Alive in me and I am free
In Jesus Name.

I will live, I will not die
I will declare and lift You high
Christ revealed and I am healed
In Jesus Name

God is fighting for us,
Pushing back the darkness
Lighting up the Kingdom
That cannot be shaken
In the Name of Jesus
Enemy’s defeated
And we will shout it out
Shout it out

Derek Hill December 6, 2013 at 9:11 pm

Wow! That is awesome! I don’t believe I have heard this song yet, but these lyrics are powerful! Thanks for sharing Joel! God bless you!

Karen December 7, 2013 at 10:10 am

I too am going through some very difficult times right now. I have been weakened…..never had this experience in my life. I see it as God wanting to draw me closer to Him, as i have been neglectful in my committment to Him. Earlier this week i fasted and in my open prayer to Him I asked for Him to show me what He wants me to learn from this. I have no control over the situation or its outcome so i have no choice but to give it totally to Him and to depend on Him solely…..whilst i have given it to Him i am weak. (not able to eat, etc). I have been singing and praising and worshipping God now and every time i do this, it pulls me out of the depressive state. There is a new song by Tye Tribbett…’He Turned it’ that i was introduced to on the very day i was fasting and it has been such a blessing.

Thank you so much for this article Derek. It affirms my thoughts and belief. I will continue to endeavour to draw closer to God….pray more, read and meditate on His word, fast, worship and most of all forgive.

God bless you and all the readers. May we find strength Him to overcome our challenges.

Derek Hill February 21, 2014 at 8:15 pm

Hello Karen. First off, I am so sorry I have not replied sooner! I try and reply to every single reader. Thank you so much for your story and the way God is leading you through this time of trial. We have an awesome God! Once again, so sorry for this very late response. God bless you!

Kathy February 21, 2014 at 8:54 am

That was AMAZING, it took my breath away! Glory be.
God blesses you… Thank you

Derek Hill February 21, 2014 at 8:18 pm

Thank you so much Kathy! God bless you!

niyi April 3, 2014 at 9:40 am

Derek God bless you richly. I am so blessed to have stumbled at this blog. I am always so happy when i see young people dedictated to the work of God. I want us to be friends

Sam October 7, 2014 at 9:43 pm

What would you say the best passage of scripture is for talking about worshipping God through the storms of life?

Jason April 28, 2015 at 11:04 pm

I’m in an interesting situation and could do with encouragement. In 06 my life was amazing and in order. I was wealthy, my hard work was paying off. I’d met a beautiful girl. A girl who needed my help. She was in a bad way and I helped her and she wanted to marry me. It was a story book.. Now in 2014 I’m all but homeless, I have no money, I struggle to put food on my plate, and have mountains of debt. The resession happened. Things when down hill. She didn’t support me at all emotionally and pushed me away. I felt so alone. It got so bad that I felt that I was surrounded by darkness in my own home. I tried to get help for us. She wouldn’t change. I had to leave. I felt so guilty because of my faith I took all the debt and left her with all our things. She is with a middle aged wealthy man whom was a friend and living the life. I live in a one bedroom bed sit with mountains of debt working long hours to try to keep afloat. I feel so alone and I pray every day and it’s hard to stay positive. I am in a sports position when I’m a role model for youth and I poor all I have left into them and it is my only salvation at the moment to see their admiration of me. That is a blessing. But I wish I knew where to go from here. I want a wife and family. I’m 38 and I feel my dream is lost. I pray that I will be OK and god will show me the way and find my real soul mate before it’s 2 late.

Bessie November 2, 2015 at 6:57 am

Hallo Derrick, I thank God i came across this blog. Praising God in the midst of the storm. What a waste of time for me. I met him at 23 years and now im 37 years old. I dont know where to start and what to do, by reading your posts, Iam healing everyday. please help in me prayers for reconcilliation and that he may get back to his senses.
