10 Popular Bedtime Prayers

by David Peach · Print Print · Email Email

Here are 10 popular bedtime prayers to teach your children. Don’t use these prayers just to give your children something to say before going to bed. Help your children learn what these prayers mean and why we pray. Obviously, we can pray any time of the day, but having a set time where we teach our children to pray may help instill in them a lifetime habit of talking with the Lord.

I have attributed some of these prayers to their authors. If you know who the original author of the other prayers are, please include their names in the comments below. Or, if you know which book they originally appeared in, leave us a comment.

Bedtime Prayers
Don’t use these prayers just to give your children something to say before going to bed. Help your children learn what these prayers mean and why we pray.

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

Some people may find this prayer a little too heavy for little children, however it is probably one of the best-known prayers that children say at night.

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

Now the Light has Gone Away

Now the light has gone away;
Savior, listen while I pray.
Asking Thee to watch and keep
And to send me quiet sleep.

Jesus, Savior, wash away
All that has been wrong to-day;
Help me every day to be
Good and gentle, more like Thee.

Let my near and dear ones be
Always near and dear to Thee.
O bring me and all I love
To Thy happy home above.

The Day is Done

The day is done;
O God the Son,
Look down upon
Thy little one!

O Light of Light,
Keep me this night,
And shed round me
Thy presence bright.

I need not fear
If Thou art near;
Thou art my Savior
Kind and dear.

Forgive, O Lord

Forgive, O Lord, for Thy dear Son
The ill that I this day have done.
That with the world, myself, and Thee
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

Jesus, Tender Shepherd

Jesus, tender Shepherd, hear me:
Bless Thy little child to-night;
Through the darkness be Thou near me,
Keep me safe till morning light.

All this day Thy hand has led me,
And I thank Thee for Thy care;
Thou hast warmed me, clothed me, fed me;
Listen to my evening prayer.

May my sins be all forgiven;
Bless the friends I love so well;
Take me, Lord, at last to heaven.
Happy there with Thee to dwell.

Our Father Who Art in Heaven

Our Father, Who art in Heaven
Hallowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil.

Lord, I have Passed Another Day

Lord, I have passed another day
And come to thank Thee for Thy care.
Forgive my faults in work or play
And listen to my evening prayer.
Thy favor gives me daily bread
And friends, who all my wants supply:
And safely now I rest my head,
Preserved and guarded by Thine eye.

Father, We Thank Thee

Father, we thank thee for the night,
And for the pleasant morning light;
For rest and food and loving care,
And all that makes the day so fair.

Help us to do the things we should,
To be to others kind and good;
In all we do, in work or play,
To grow more loving every day.

Rebecca Weston – 1890

Away in a Manger

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes;
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;
Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,
And fit us for Heaven to live with Thee there.

James Murry and John T. McFarland 1887

Abide With Me

Abide With Me is a song that was not written as a bedtime prayer, rather, as a farewell to this world. Henry F. Lyte was dying with tuberculosis in 1847. These beautiful words can be taught as a prayer full of great Bible teaching.

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim; its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word;
But as Thou dwell’st with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings,
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea,
Come, Friend of sinners, and thus bide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile;
And, though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee,
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heaven’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Henry F. Lyte 1847

Alternative to “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep”…

This one is titled: “Evening Prayer”

“Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to keep
When in the morning light I wake
Help me the path of life to take
And keep the same for Thy dear sake.”
Amen

This is the prayer our mother taught us to pray when we were children. The words are on a little placque.

The first bedtime prayer I was taught 72 years ago was the same with two added lines:
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray Thee Lord my soul to keep
If I should die before I wake
I ptay Thee Lord my soul to take
And if I live for other days
I pray Thee Lord to guide my ways
Amen

Here is a version of the evening prayer that I found insice cover in one of my grandchildrens childs Bible along with the Morning Prayer that follows:

My Evening Prayer
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep;
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

Thank you for the stars so bright,
And for the pleasant morning light,
For rest and food and loving care,
And all that makes the world so fair.

Help me to do the things I should,
To be to others, kind and good,
In all I do, in all I say,
To grow more loving every day.

Lord keep me safe this very night,
And quiet all my fears;
O bless and guard me while I sleep,
Till morning light appears.

My Morning Prayer

Now, before I run to play,
Let me not forget to pray To
God who kept me through
the night
And waked me with the
morning light,
Help me, Lord, to love
Thee more
Than I ever loved before,
In my work and in my play,
Be Thou with me through
the day.
Amen

My mother gave me a plaque that had this variation

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
Guard me through the starry night
And waken me at morning’s light.

To S.L.:

I know this part of your prayer as part of a song for children:

“Thank you for the stars so bright,
And for the pleasant morning light,
For rest and food and loving care,
And all that makes the world so fair.

Help me to do the things I should,
To be to others, kind and good,
In all I do, in all I say,
To grow more loving every day.”

I’m afraid I am not understanding your request. Are you asking that I pray for you? Or, are you asking that some daily prayers be posted? Sincerely,

To all that have submitted to The Evening Prayer, I was also taught to, as a really young one, ask/say at the end of the prayer, “God Bless Mommy, God Bless Daddy” and anyone else we could think of. My sister and I were only taught the first few lines then ask God to Bless whoever we could think of. Of course we would ask Him to Bless the cat, the dog, the bird and every one we knew until our parents got wise to us that we did that to lengthen “our stay up time”.

This prayer has been in my family for generations. I don’t know who wrote it but my grandmother taught my mom & they both taught me & my 4 other sisters.I’m now teaching it to my son.

Gentle jesus meek & mild
Look upon this little child,
Pity, mild, simple city,
Suffer me to come to thee.
Faith I owe,
To Thee I pray,
Make me grow O Lord I pray.
In my little home I lay,
Heavenly father hear my pray,
Good protect me through this night,
& bring me back another day.
Amen.

My mother taught me this prayer, that I say almost every night:

“God thank you for this glorious day,
Thank you for all you have given me,
Please forgive me for my sins,
As I have forgiven many who have sinned against me,
And help me do better tomorrow”

Or the other version is:

“God thank you for this day,
Thank you for everything you have give me,
Please forgive me for my sins,
And help me to go better tomorrow”

to rule and guide.
I lay my body down to sleep
i pray the Lord my soul to keep

I was checking to see if there was an author for this:

Forgive me if
I have this day,
Done any wrong
in work or play.
O help me always
to do right,
And bless me every
day and night.

Learned it in Sunday school I think. Prayed it nightly for many years as a non-Christian math-science type kid. But I always felt blessed as a kid and God helped me (in hindsight)to do right and follow the truth above science and religion. That, of course, led me to faith in Jesus Christ, who is “the Way, the Truth and the Life,” while in science at university, after years of collecting insights and thinking things through a lot. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood and I took the little path and that has made all the difference. Incredibly!

Now the day is over,
Night is drawing nigh,
Shadows of the evening
Steal across the sky.
Jesus, give the weary
Calm and sweet repose;
With Thy tend’rest blessing
May mine eyelids close.
Grant to little children
Visions bright of Thee;
Guard the sailors tossing
On the deep, blue sea.
Comfort those who suffer,
Watching late in pain;
Those who plan some evil
From their sin restrain.
Through the long night watches
May Thine angels spread
Their white wings above me,
Watching round my bed.
When the morning wakens,
Then may I arise
Pure, and fresh, and sinless
In Thy holy eyes.

We said this prayer nightly, funny my children sang this same as a church preschool song at the end of the day.

Jesus is my Shepard
I’m his little lamb.
While He guards and guides me
Save and glad I am.
AMEN
We also had a picture of a girl and boy kneeling with hands praying above our bed of “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep” The part ” if I die…” scared us.

Dear Jesus, for these three things I pray:
To Love Thee more dearly
To follow Thee more nearly
To know Thee more clearly
Everyday, I Love you Jesus, Amen.

I used to say this prayer with my kinds and then with my gandkids…I love it as it brings me near to Jesus and my family.

Now this one I made up when I was 13 so it may sound a little odd and you won’t find it anywhere. I was also never taught how to pray, so I had to look it up on the Internet. This is a mixture of pieces I found.

Dear Lord,
I thank you for this beautiful day,
Thank you for keeping me safe and sound.
Please bless my family and I and wash away my sins that I have committed through the day.
As I lay my head this night, I pray for your protection.
Please help me to take the path you have chosen for me and help me not to stray.
Let your will be done and let my light shine to all the Earth.
In Jesus name, amen.

This is a variation of one of the most common night time prayers that my mother was taught as a child although she translated it from the German that she was taught as a little girl.

“Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
Guard me safely through the night
And wake me with the morning light.”

I find it much more comforting than the version that we are traditionally taught in America.

My Grandmas mom taught her this when she was a little girl…I am teaching it to my girls now.
A Little Childs Prayer:
Dear Father, mine are little hands; their work is easy still
But teach them to obey commands and do thy will
Dear Father mine are little feet
But guide them every day on every path on every street to walk thy way
Dear Father mine are little words
But through the coming days teach me as thou hast taught the birds to sing thy praise.
Dear Father as I go to sleep bless those who make me blest
And keep me as the long hours creep close to my breast.

There are four angels round my bed
Two at the foot and two at the head
One to watch
and one to pray
and two to put my toys away!
God Bless Mummy
God bless Daddy ( repeated line to include siblings and pet goldfish)
and make me a good girl in the morning.

Vincent, the prayers don`t just have to be for a child, you can pray them for anyone who feels he/she needs to pray but don`t know how to start. When you feel more comfortably talking to God, then you and He will start to converse better. ” Following your heart, should only be a start to something more deeping.
