I f your back is against the wall and you’re faced with an impossible situation, what do you do?
The Possible
If your back is against the wall and you’re faced with an impossible situation, what do you do? To begin with, we know the Bible is the perfect, inerrant Word of God, so His great and precious promises are more certain than the sunrise tomorrow (2 Pet 1:4). When we trust in Jesus Christ, all the promises of God are “Amen” and we know that we are secure in Him for all eternity (John 6:37-39, 10:28-29). It’s impossible that we can ever be separated from God (Rom 8:37-39) at this point forward. Since it is impossible for God to lie (Num 23:19; Heb 6:18), then it is true where Jesus said that “nothing will be impossible with God” (Luke 1:37). If it is God’s will, all things are possible for us (Phil 4:13). Even if something is impossible for us, all things are possible for Him.
The Impossible
The Apostle Paul reminds us that in Christ, we have no real limitations if it is within God’s will, for Paul states boldly that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil 4:13). Paul is expressing confidence in God’s ability to empower believers to overcome any situation, whether difficult or prosperous, by relying on Him. What is impossible to do in our own strength is not impossible with His strength; if we rely on Him and not ourselves. That’s the point. We need His strength to go on. Jesus said, “without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5), and the last time I checked, “nothing” is not a little “something.” In Him there is hope for the hopeless and the humanly impossible becomes possible. That gives God the glory, and that’s as it should be (Psalm 115:1).
Desperate Situations
Have you ever had your back to the wall? I mean, have you ever been in real financial trouble or facing or going through a divorce, the loss of a child, job, house, or anything that major? When we can no longer do anything else, only God can do what only He can do. When we can do nothing more, He does more than nothing. When I faced a delimma years ago, all I could say was, “Okay, God, I’ve done all I can humanly do…I can’t wait to see what you’re going to do.” When we cannot turn over a heavy problem, turn it over to God. Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matt 11:28-30).
3 Steps to Rest in Troubles
How can you deal with the heavy burdens of life when you finally run out of solutions?
- Step One: Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt 11:28). Jesus can take the heaviest loads and loads too heavy for you to bear. Bring these heavy burdens to Christ in prayer.
- Step Two: Again, Jesus says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt 11:29). If you take Jesus’ yoke, that means He’s sharing the burden with you, like the two ox that pull a cart…it’s easier on the one ox if another is joined to the yoke.
- Step Three: Finally Jesus says, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matt 11:30), meaning that His yoke lightens your load which means your burden is lightened. Otherwise, you carry it all by yourself, and I know from experience that my single-yoke is tough, but with Jesus’ yoke is easier.
Casting Your Burdens
Jesus has already told us to come to Him and when we do, knowing we’ve done all we can, the Apostle Peter says we are to “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Pet 5:7). Notice he said “all your anxiety,” not most of them. The Psalmist says, “Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken” (Psalm 55:22). Casting cares and anxieties means we must take action. God will not wipe these away if we wish to hold onto them. Whatever is cast away is no longer in our hands, right? That’s the idea of the Psalmist and Peter. If we don’t cast all these burdens onto Jesus’ shoulders, then we don’t realize that “Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up” (Prov 12:25). With God’s help and God’s Word, you can actually “banish anxiety from your heart and cast off the troubles of your body” (Eccl 9:10).
Trust God
We know that we live by faith and not by explanations, so our faith is like film…its best developed in the dark. We must trust God and do all we can humanly possible do, and only after we’ve exhausted all our possibilities, then we must learn to let God do only what God can do. We can’t do the impossible by ourselves…but He can. He has His own timing and His own ways, so trust Him in all your trials and troubles. Someone once said, “Let disappointment be His appointment.” I think that’s a great way to look at our troubles….sometimes instead of solving our problems, our problems have a way of solving us.
Conclusion
I pray you have put your trust in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. If that has not happened yet, my friend, you are in real danger of hell fire. And I mean, in immediate danger. You’re one breath, one heartbeat…one accident away from eternity when it will be too late to repent. Today is the best day to believe (2 Cor 6:2) since tomorrow is no guarantee. If Jesus Christ came today, here is your fate (Matt 7:21-23). This is why I plead with you as you read this, repent today…and I mean right now. Put your trust in Jesus Christ. If you do not, you will face God’s judgment after death guaranteed (Heb 9:27) or at Jesus Christ’s appearance (Rev 20:12-15), which could happen at any moment.
