Is America Turning to Socialism?

According to recent trends, it appears America is turning to socialism? If so, what does that mean for the nation’s future?

Free, Free, Free

According to recent trends, it appears America is turning to socialism? If so, what does that mean for the nation’s future? American adults generally support making tuition free at public colleges and universities for all U.S. students, yet there are sizable partisan and demographic differences in views of tuition-free college as we shall see. But for me, the one question that no one seems to be asking is, “How is it going to be paid for?” Likely, it is the tax payer who will pay. Right now, about 63% of Americans want free college tuition, but only 12% are willing to pay for it with higher taxes. What is foreboding is that it appears we are slowly but surely drifting toward becoming a socialist nation, or at least we have displayed tendencies that you find in socialism.

Grass Roots Movement

The grassroots efforts of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and similar left-wing groups are paying significant dividends in the powers that be. For example, five statewide candidates for the General Assembly who had been endorsed by DSA all won their primaries in New York. Several even had come-from-behind victories because of absentee ballots, which incidentally is a key socialist initiative. So at this point in American’s history, and for the first time in history, we have two self-described democratic socialists who were not even endorsed by DSA but still won their statewide races. [1]

A New Revolution

What is of greatest concern is the fact that these radicals see themselves and their platforms as being like the revolutionary vanguard of society, much like the Bolsheviks of 1917, so this is a radical sect that portends to be the nation’s economic and social “savior,” so to speak. And make no mistake, they are not bashful. Today, they’re prepared to strike when the moment is ripe to bring down a weakened political and economic structure, and right now, the political and economic structure of the United States is anything but stable. There’s a weakened political and economic structure in many other nations too. That means the rick for a rise in socialism has never been greater. The more the economy tanks, the more radical solutions come to surface.

Karl Marx

I hope by reading this far, you are as concerned as I am about socialism creeping into our society and into government. Don’t think it’s serious yet? The Socialist Alternative has now called for the formation of a brand new left party which says they have “a clear socialist program and a tested Marxist leadership.” The Marxist publication, The Call, boldly states that there is the need for Karl Marx leadership right now and that American workers need “a mass working class party” to fight for them. [1]

Red Flags

These were the same things that were happening in Germany prior to Hitler and the rise of the Nazi party. Then, as now, there is a movement toward providing free daycare for workers in order to take the burden off of families, but who is the financial burden going to rest with? Naturally, it’s you and I who will pay higher taxes, but there is also this: “free” programs will continue to put the nation into such debt that, even now, is spiraling further and further beyond our control. When we can’t even pay the interest on this debt, we know we’re in big trouble. Inflation has already been one of the first red flags we’ve seen; next will be “free” money (stimulus/tax credits), and/or ongoing stimulus packages, but really, I think this is just the beginning.

Freedom?

Like the proverbial frog in the pot on the stove, most of us don’t realize that the heat’s being turned up; slowly, yes, but surely it’s getting hotter and hotter and the frog doesn’t even realize it! In fact, the frog is calling for “free hot water.” Change is ever so slow as to be almost unperceivable to the naked eye, but it changing and certainly not for the better. Someone who was gone for the last ten years and returned to civilization would likely be shocked at what they see and hear, and not in a good way. Maria Fernanda Bello is an activist with Young Americans Against Socialism, and she sees the trouble that’s gripped her native Venezuela already. This lady warns us that “Socialists are always going to promise you free tuition, free health care, free everything, but they will never promise you freedom.”[2] A 2019 Pew Research Center survey found half of young adults under 30 expressed positive views of socialism, so the drift toward socialism is only going to grow stronger. [3] All the more reasons we need to pray for revival for this nation and others who are under the same threat or are already socialist.

Growing Socialism

According to a recent poll, for the first time since Gallup has even asked the question, there are more Democrats who approve of socialism than approve of capitalism. Could socialism really come to America? [4] It already has! Socialist Bernie Sanders competitively challenged Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016, and then there is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a candidate with similar policy views and a member of the Democratic Socialists of America who won the Democratic nomination in New York’s 14th Congressional District. But mark my word; life in a socialist nation is a lot different than life in a democracy. There is more control, fewer choices, and less tolerance for those who oppose the system in socialist nations than in democracies. If we’ve learned anything from history it is we haven’t learned from history. We keep repeating the same mistakes, and socialism will not only destroy the nation, it will inhibit the Body of Christ, the church. The church will stick out like a sore thumb and will constantly rub society the wrong way.

Conclusion

Many today feel like they are entitled to “free” this or “free” that, but for everyone who receives something free, someone else has to pay for it, so it’s not really free. We have freedom in Christ but not freedom to sin.  Our freedom cost Christ immensely, so we’re not entitled to live in sin after we profess faith in Christ. In fact I believe we are not entitled to anything we don’t work for, with exceptions made for those who are disabled and cannot work. It’s not about Democrats verses Republicans or Conservatives against Liberals. It’s about doing the right thing and making sure our democracy is not taken away….slowly but surely. We will all live to regret that! I am not trying to be a pessimist but a realist and try to warn the nation that it is headed down a steep slope toward destruction and we may have already reached a point of no return. Only God knows that for sure, but it looks humanly impossible for this nation to sustain or even pay back this debt when it is almost immeasurable and growing every second. Only God can save this nation from destruction. Please pray with me that God would send revival to this and other nations before it’s too late, and that “my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chron 7:14).
