Bible Verses Showing God Pursues Us

The Bible shows us that God seeks after us and that we do not seek after Him. That’s amazing grace.

Sought by God – Luke 15, 19

The Bible shows us that God seeks after us and that we do not seek after Him. That’s amazing grace. Why did Jesus come to earth in the first place? He answers, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). Notice He does the seeking. Earlier in the Gospel of Luke Jesus gives us information that He is the Chief Shepherd and seeks after the lost sheep. In Luke 15:4-7 our Lord says, “What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the other ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he has found it, he puts it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my sheep that was lost!’ I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who have no need of repentance.”

Notice the sheep don’t have to find the Shepherd (Because they can’t…they are lost!). He seeks the lost one, the lost one’s don’t seek Him (Rom 3:10-12). Also note that He puts the lost sheep on His shoulders (safety and security), and brings it all the way home (into the Kingdom). That’s not only pursuing us but preserving us…all the way home.

Drawn by God

I like to put it this way: God thought me (Eph 1), He sought me (Luke 15, 19), He caught me (John 6:37, 39, 44), He bought me (1 Pet 1:19), and He taught me (2 Thess 2:15; Gal 6:6), what I ought be. In John 6:37 we read, “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.” Whoever the Father gives to Jesus Christ (us!) will come to Him (Jesus), and whoever trusts in Him, Jesus promises, “I will never cast out.” Still think you can come to Him on your own? Nope. Jesus said in John 6:44 that “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.” The Greek word used for “draw” is the same one used where Paul and Silas were “dragged” to prison. This is an effectual call. We can’t come to Christ unless the Father acts and draws us, and indeed, He does. I remember that God called Israel out of Egypt….Israel did not bring themselves out of slavery. Some say they found God, but God was not missing; they were! If they think they found Jesus on their own, the truth is, He made Himself “findable” (i.e. Acts 2, 9).

Lost Sheep

Wolves in Sheep's Clothing

In John 6:37 Jesus says that “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out…This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.” Where our Lord says, “I should lose nothing” He means He will lost no one. When the Father draws us to Christ, all will make it. All is all! Not most, but all. That’s the Father’s will, and who can argue with what God is for!? Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand” (John 10:27-29).

Born of God by God

We should praise God that “… According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Pet 1:3). In the same way we had no decision on our natural birth, God causes us to be born again. The Apostle John writes, “to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God” (John 1:12-13). The truth is, it was not our will to be born physically…and similarly, it was not our will to be born again…but God’s and God’s alone! What joy that ought to bring us! We were dead in our sins, and dead men cannot choose Christ (Eph 2:1-5). They can only choose to decay. But…men and women made alive by the Spirit can make choices (2 Cor 15:22). This is exactly why we must give all glory to God for our salvation and even for our calling! It should humble us all that, as the Lord said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you” (John 15:16a).

Glory to God

The Apostle Peter gives a doxology (Praise to God) in writing, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Pet 1:3). He caused us to be born again. He was the reason we came to saving faith in Christ. It was by His free gift of grace (Eph 2:8-9), so praise Him, give Him the glory and give Him all the credit for our salvation that is due Him; and we know that’s 100% of God (Acts 16:30-31; Eph 2:10). It is not by the arm of the flesh that we were saved, but by the Spirit of God, for there is no other way than through faith in Jesus (Acts 4:12), and even this is a gift (Eph 2:8)! How incredible.

Conclusion

I pray you have put your trust in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. If that has not happened yet, my friend, you are in real danger of hell fire. And I mean, in immediate danger. You’re one breath, one heartbeat…one accident away from eternity when it will be too late to repent. Today is the best day to believe (2 Cor 6:2) since tomorrow is no guarantee. If Jesus Christ came today, here is your fate (Matt 7:21-23). This is why I plead with you as you read this, repent today…and I mean right now. Put your trust in Jesus Christ. If you do not, you will face God’s judgment after death guaranteed (Heb 9:27) or at Jesus Christ’s appearance (Rev 20:12-15), which could happen at any moment.
