5 Thoughts To Comfort Us When We Fear The Future

by Derek Hill · Print Print · Email Email

The future is something that we will all fear at one point or another in life. Will I ever have kids? Will grandpa make it through his heart surgery? Will I ever find someone to marry? And the questions go on and on. Satan likes these questions because he will try to burden you with worry in the times of uncertainty. No matter what trial you are in, you are not alone. God is with you! Here are 5 thoughts that you can meditate on and think about when fear of the future creeps up on you.

Your Future Is Ordained By God

Every single circumstance you face and every choice you make has already been ordained by God. Satan, himself, can’t even tempt us unless God allows it. As God and Satan are conversing in the book of Job, Satan says, “But stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will curse You to Your face.” (Job 1:11) What is God’s response? “And the Lord said to Satan, ‘Behold, all that he has is in your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.’” God is literally in control of everything around you and He allows everything to happen for a reason, good or bad. So, take comfort in knowing that God has got this!

... rely on God to take your hand and lead you through whatever may make you fearful of the future.

… rely on God to take your hand and lead you through whatever may make you fearful of the future.

Future Glory!

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.” – Romans 8:18-21

Paul is saying that all of the suffering here on earth does not hold a candle to how amazing it will be in our future glory in Heaven when we are finally set free once and for all from corruption and sin. That really helps us through the dark times to know that there is a very bright future at the end of the tunnel. So, take some time to think about how amazing Heaven will be. You will have your very own room that Jesus has prepared for you. Isn’t that amazing! Not only that but you will see Jesus face to face. I can’t wait to actually have a physical conversation with Christ!

In Darkness He Is Light

Jesus reigns supreme and even in your darkest times He is there. John 1:5 says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” This verse always comforts me to know that nothing can diminish the light of Christ. He has defeated Satan and we can trust that His blood has cleansed us from sin. If you are afraid of your eternal future, please consider this verse. Set your sins at the cross. Repent to God and know that you are saved. His blood covers your sin and you can be forgiven.

He Is Certain Of Your Uncertainty

“Has it ever occurred to you that nothing occurs to God?” – Adrian Rogers

The first time I heard this quote I was blown away! I had never thought about it before. But it is true. Nothing ever occurs to God because He knows everything. He is omniscient. And He knows your uncertainty and doubts. He loves you just the same in your doubts. That is very comforting to know that His love is unconditional and no matter your circumstance you can have faith that God will never leave you or forsake you. You can take one step at a time, relying on His plan for your future. You don’t know your future. But He already does. Trust in Him to lead you.

Listen To Comforting Music

This might sound silly, but music speaks to the soul. It moves people passionately. If you are in a very scary and dark time, let music sooth you. Let it move you to praise God and rely on Him.

“I’ll praise You in this storm and I will lift my hands. For You are who You are no matter where I am. And every tear I’ve cried, You hold in Your hand. You never left my side, and though my heart is torn, I will praise You in this storm.” – Praise You In This Storm, Casting Crowns

“There will be a day with no more tears, no more pain, and no more fears. There will be a day when the burdens of this place will be no more. We’ll see Jesus face to face. But until that day, we’ll hold on to You always.” – There Will Be A Day, Jeremy Camp

Conclusion

The future can be a scary time but take comfort in knowing that this is not the end. And this time on earth is but a brief moment in the span of eternity. May you find peace that passes all understanding as you rely on God to take your hand and lead you through whatever may make you fearful of the future. God bless you all as you continue to live a life worthy of the calling!
