Angels & Demons: 15 Powerful Bible Verses

by Pamela Rose Williams · Print Print · Email Email

When you study Bible Doctrines or “Systematic Theology” in school, one of the subcategories is Angelology. That word comes from two Greek words meaning the doctrine of angels. When you study Angelology you cover the origin, nature, ministry and destiny of angels, both good and evil.[1] As you learn about Angels you learn that not only are angels real, but so are demons, which are fallen angels. The Bible refers to angels and demons over two hundred seventy times.

How the Bible Describes Angels & Demons

The Bible has much to say to describe angels and demons.  Here are some points to remember:

  • Angels are referred to as masculine, although neither do they have a sexual distinction nor do they marry
  • In the Bible we see large numbers of Angels many times
  • Angels are very fast; they have great speed
  • Angels are very strong but they are not all powerful (omnipotent)
  • Angels are very wise
  • Some Angels are good and some angels are evil; the evil ones are called demons

Here are fifteen powerful Bible verses about angels and demons:

Luke 2:13 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

Luke 2:13 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”

The Angelic Host

At Creation: Job 38:7 when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

At the Giving of the Law: Galatians 3:19 Why then the law? It was added because of transgressions, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was put in place through angels by an intermediary.

At the Birth of Jesus: Luke 2:13-14 (KJV) And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

At the Temptation of Christ: Matthew 4:11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

At the Resurrection of Christ: Matthew 28:2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it.

When Christ Comes Again: Mark 8:38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

Angel’s Ministry

They Minister to God: Psalms 148:1-2 Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights! Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his hosts!

They Minister to Man as Messengers: Luke 1:13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

They Minister to Man as Guardians: Daniel 6:22 My God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths, and they have not harmed me, because I was found blameless before him; and also before you, O king, I have done no harm.

They Minister to the Needs of Believers: Hebrews 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?

Their Leader’s Name is Satan Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world— he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

They Attempt to Hinder God’s People 1 Timothy 4:1-3 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

They are One Third of All the Angels: Revelation 12:4 His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it.

They are Unclean Spirits: Luke 11:24 When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’

They Believe in One God: James 2:19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

Hello pwc, Thank you for taking time to post some words of encouragement. I am delighted to share the verses from the Bible here at WCWTK. Blessings on you!

Pierce November 8, 2011 at 8:57 pm

Very nice. Glad to see an intrest in angels. I do not know your denomination, but in Orthodoxy, we have the deuterocanon. The book of Tobit is a narrative and prophecy of the Messiah, a major character in it is Raphael, a guardian angel. Well worth reading even if you won’t see it as scripture. Please read it and see how many things you see as a pointer to Jesus.

Pam Williams November 9, 2011 at 10:52 am

Hello Pierce
Thank you for this information. WCWTK is a non-denominational and Biblically based ministry. However I have personally read some of the book of Tobit and have read about Raphael. I am so glad you stopped by to comment. Blessings to you!

Pam, just read your thoughts on angels.. I have a beautiful story that just came out as an ebook. “Forsaken but not Forgotten” I was left at the hospital when I was born, then was kidnapped at 5 yrs old. I was then taken into the mountains and was captive for 5 years as an incest victim. The story goes till my daddy was caught and sent to prison. I was put into a children home. 1st night crying, thought housemother turned the light on, was very bright and a angel was at the foot of my bed the angel said to me that “Jesus loved me and would always be with me”. Lots more to the story….. Dana

Pam January 6, 2012 at 1:05 pm

Thanks for sharing Dana

Thanks for this informative site. I think I have read that Satan cannot read the minds of humans. I have tried to find the verse but do not remember how it is worded. If you know the answer it would be greatly appreciated. I am assuming that since he isn’t omnipotent he couldn’t anyway, but I hope there is a verse that confirms it so I can show it to someone who has asked.

Pam March 5, 2012 at 11:27 am

Hello Vivian, What a good question. You caused me to dig for that verse and I think I found it. But I had some other things laid upon my heart too, so I wrote about it over on my blog. Take a look: I hope you will stop by again at WCWTK.

Donna January 12, 2015 at 8:43 pm

I have read that verse too, I think; however, I feel that satan and his demons must be able to read the mind…this is my reasoning..

When we speak to satan, commanding that he is silent in the name of Jesus Christ, or leaves in the name of Jesus Christ…he has to obey.

It is one thing commanding him at home when you are on your own, but what happens of you have to command him in a quiet area, or in front of other people who you don’t know, for example.

If you command him in your head (not out loud), in the name of Jesus Christ, to do something…he still obeys.

If he doesn’t know wha you are thinking, why would or could he obey you?

It is just somehtung that God brought to my attention.

Hannah Minteer February 1, 2015 at 1:44 pm

I think you’re a tad confused. You don’t command Satan to leave to get him to leave. It’s not some “magical spell” to get Satan to leave. “Resisting the Devil (James 4:7)” doesn’t mean saying out loud that he has to leave. Besides, your own flesh does WAY more damage than Satan (James 4:1-6). Not every temptation comes directly from Satan. He just knows how to use your flesh to his advantage. Besides, if Satan can read minds…how is he different from God? See if these passages help.

Only God knows the heart- 1 Kings 8:39- then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone know the hearts of all the sons of men).

Satan had to observe to know what Job was doing- Job 1:6-7- Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?” So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

deb barrans June 12, 2012 at 3:20 pm

How do you test rather Spirits are angels or demonic spirits manifesting as light.

John January 4, 2013 at 7:43 pm

Angels don’t reveal themselves. The recently deceased have be reported in hospitals before as manifestations of light. Demons don’t manifest from light either. So i would guess your seeing spirits guides or friends and family.

For what it’s worth. God doesn’t display power to the living because your here to develop your faith without deception. If God were to reveal himself or lead his followers, demons would mimic him and lead many straight to hell.

Always listen to your heart. Evil can only influence your mind. Your heart will forever be un-tainted and is the only thing you can trust.

exorcist for Christ February 27, 2013 at 9:03 am

@John “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is?” Jeremiah 17:9. Please don’t go around sharing information like it’s ineffable truth. Either bring more information to the table, or clearly state that this is just your opinion. I don’t have time to type out my opinions on the rest of your statements! let’s just say, I have extensive experience encountering both angels, and demons… some of the stuff I have seen would blow your mind.

Annie October 9, 2014 at 6:10 pm

It may depend on whose heart. If we accept and believe Christ lives in our heart perhaps we will be saved in the end no matter. Forces that create and pull down stars would indeed blow one’s mind. Sorry you have such a reality in this life.

Donna January 12, 2015 at 8:49 pm

I am a little confused by what you said.

If God doesn’t display His power to the living; how was I instantly cured from my deathbed with heart failure and brain damage, among others things, and now am completely normal?

And how do I speak tongues (a language that not not I don’t know, but that I includes sounds I can’t even pronounce myself intentionally?

God definite showed me His power.

And his power works through me.
Christ lives in me, and I in him.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we can achieve “all things”; so how can you say what you said.

Vasili June 12, 2012 at 4:53 pm

Cross yourself and say a prayer for discernment (if you are Orthodox or Catholic) our authority is from God, pray he will protect you (demon) or enlighten you (angle) and praise him for such an encounter. But do not assume any being of light is angelic, always assume the worse and unless the being testifies to the truth of Our Lord and his Holy Church, do not take its advise.

Delores July 2, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Can an angel help you turn over at night when you are in alot of pain due to cancer. Turning over helped me sleep better.

My brother

Vasili July 2, 2012 at 6:11 pm

The power of the angelic is incredible and even more so as they act solely on the will of Our Lord. Demons love to take advantage of the sick and discourage them. We have the power through Christ to fight these demons. Pray constantly for healing from the cancer and fight the unseen war within yourself!

Hi I loved your information and had a question, I know God gives us the power to run out demons but do we have the power to destroy them? If so can u point me in the way of some biblical backing? Thank u for your time

Pamela Rose Williams July 11, 2012 at 6:50 pm

Hello Danny, We do not have the power to destroy any angel, whether he be good or bad. Engaging any angelic being is a very dangerous thing to do. Pray in the name of Jesus that He will protect you from these things and be careful stay away.

Margaret July 24, 2012 at 1:39 pm

Thank you so much for giving such a great informations on god’s love for us

Beat Bisangwa August 2, 2012 at 1:52 am

….thank you for this….I just love angel and thank God for them because I feel them wherever I am and it gives me a sense of security! No demon can touch me or my loved ones because they would have to passby them! Praise the Lord for angels! They sorround the heirs of the kingdom of God …..

rose August 7, 2012 at 7:00 pm

okay so i am having a bad time with what i should believe. I’m always surrounded by demons and evil things my friends even see it.. I believe in god and how holy he is but why should he sound so perfect and the devil sound so evil why cant they just be one person? God does test on people but what if it turns out to be it was just science would we just be waisting our time by following the 10 commandments ?

Becka September 18, 2012 at 1:56 pm

I feel the same way and often have the same doubts, I don’t know the answer but rest in the fact that you are not alone in your questioning. I know it comforts me to see that i am not the only one that is confused and asking for clarity. I wish you the best, and answers to all you have asked.

Donna January 12, 2015 at 9:12 pm

I will pray for you.
My advice is to speak to God (out loud ‘into thin air’ is fine)…and ask Him to show you the truth about Him and Jesus, and reveal to you what the Bible means.
God does exist and is real, but if you can’t it, you struggle to see it.
If you want to know the truth, God know that you are serious about it, and when you ask He will let you know it.
If you seek the truth you shall find it.
The devil is trying to stop you seeing the truth however, but if you genuinely want to know the truth, God will reveal it.
May God bless you with a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, and a relationship with Himself.
God bless,
Love, Donna xxx

John January 4, 2013 at 7:24 pm

When your in doubt of what to believe. Turn to yourself and believe in yourself instead. God gave you a tool to use in your darkest hours.

One time ago when you decided to walk with GOD he showed you a path of heaven. He said, take this path it will lead you back to me. He also showed you the demons who will try to derail you from this path. Demons will try to guide you with truth and lies but no matter what they say do not give into temptation. They will keep you guessing from what the right and wrong is.

So GOD gave you a heart. It’s the only thing that doesn’t lie ever. He said, if your not able to give GOD your faith listen to your heart and it will guide you back to me.

I hope this helps you.

James February 13, 2013 at 6:05 pm

God will Never use the Holy Spirit temp or deceive anyone,Remember Jesus saying I go but I will send you Comforter. But there will be tests along the way.So stayed Prayed up and continue to ask for guidence.

If you think logically.
Nothing or no-one can be completely pure and completely evil at the same time.

God and the devil are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

God is pure and holy and everything He is and says is truth.
The devil is evil and described as the father of lies. He certainly do not speak the truth.

They are definitely separate, and the devil is tying to get back at God, and cause as many problems as possible between God’s creation (humans) and God, b turning humans against God.

God wants us to know the truth; however, it is only when we turn to Him and genuinely want to know the truth that He can share that with us.

I hope hat this helps you in some way.
Please do rep kind with further questions or clarification, ec if you’d like to.

Take care,
God bless,

some day we will know all of the answers, noe just praise god, an keep on learning, from this earth, it has many lesson,s to teach us.

Ralph Jerome Macanas December 27, 2012 at 12:00 am

I want to know all the names of angel and demons listed on the bible.

wouter December 29, 2012 at 5:16 pm

Hi, my name is Wouter. I live in South Africa. I read the artical above. I do believe that there is angels and demons. That is why I write you. I want to know how I can get rid of the most popular demons of all time. The demons of lies and pornography. I have given my life too Jesus and I know that His laws are to be held. It is though my flesh still desires the cravings of these sins even though I do not whant to do them in my spirit. I have had this demon with me for over 25 years and I need to get rid of him as soon as possible. Do you have any advise on what I can do? Thank you….

John January 4, 2013 at 6:59 pm

These demons exist in nature like you. Your desires are the same as this demon. Like many things such as pornography the sin lies in the type of pornography itself. If your watching pornography that is immoral then the demon is in control of your lust. To rid lust and bore the demon to move on you must entice it to enjoy a more loving nature porn. This will bore the demon and it will try to entice you to go back to immoral porn. Do not rid sexual desire cause these are important to maintain a healthy frame of mind.
Soon as you have learned how to full fill your sexual desires in a loving nature and accept it, the demon will move on. Sometimes it helps to initiate this with a demonstration of your personal strength to make change. What ever your religion is go to your church and repent or get baptized.

Remember demons are only as powerful as much as you allow them to be, without you they have no power. Make the change and drain the power from the demon and empower yourself. Every time you do this you will be rewarded with the power of happiness and nothing is like the happiness GOD provides, it is a gift not a privilege.
How you live your life will determine your fate.

James February 13, 2013 at 6:14 pm

The best way to fight off any unwanted sins in your life is to not feed it. Just imagine 2 dogs fighting of equal size the one you would want win feed it more and starve the one you would want to lose. Instead of looking up porn look up bible Scripture.

Justin April 14, 2013 at 4:43 pm

I was told by some fellow believers that I trust that some Angels fell for women. Is this true? Has there even been a case in the bible where an Angel or Demon falls for the beauty of a woman?

Donna January 12, 2015 at 9:09 pm

“The Nephilim were on the earth in those days–and also afterward–when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them.” (genesis 6:4)

The fallen angels basically slept with human woman and produced offspring…which are called the ‘Nephilim”.

pastor Michael sweet April 24, 2013 at 4:16 am

hi greetings to you in the name of our Lord jesus. I would like to if there is a bible verses that talks about angles having wings. thank you.

Pamela Rose Williams September 10, 2014 at 12:24 pm

Hello Pastor Michael sweet … Cherubim and Seraphim are two types of angels that have wings ( Cherubim (Exodus 25:20; Ezekiel 10) and Seraphim (Isaiah 6). However Hebrews 1:14 tells us that angels are spirit beings and there is no talk of wings there. So the answer, some do have wings, some may not have wings.

Aimee May 23, 2013 at 3:44 am

Angels don’t earn wings.
Angels aren’t good people who died.
(People can’t become angels.)
Angels don’t cry.
Angels don’t answer your prayers.
(God answers prayers.)
Angels don’t beg.
Angels don’t sleep.
Angels don’t worry.
Angels don’t desire attention.
Angels don’t act on their own accord.
Angels don’t marry, nor are they given in marriage.
(See Mark 12:25.)
Angels don’t have baby angels.
(They don’t procreate.)
Angels aren’t dead people.
Angels don’t mediate.
(There is one mediator between God and man—
Jesus Christ. (See 1 Timothy 2:5.)
Angels aren’t cute, little, fat babies with wings. (Cupid is not
an angel.)
Most angels don’t have wings,
except the cherubim and seraphim.
Angels don’t sin.
Angels don’t wear halos. They shine with the glory of God.
Angels don’t have temper tantrums.
Angels don’t talk dirty.
Angels are never afraid.
Angels never pout.
Angel’s don’t stress out.
Angels aren’t human. (Your Aunt Tess is not an angel. Neither
is your husband.)
Angels aren’t impatient.
Angels don’t gossip or find fault.
God’s holy angels don’t act as “spirit guides,” nor do they
“channel,” as certain cults would have you believe. Those are
false spirits who have nothing to do with God, the Holy Spirit,
or Jesus Christ. God’s angels live to serve God, not people.
Angels don’t act of their own accord.
Angels don’t heal. (Jesus dispatches them in His name to do
His bidding, which may include healing, but they cannot heal
in and of themselves.)
Angels don’t deliver us from evil. (They are charged by God in
all their actions.)
Angels aren’t pretty blonde ladies with large, sweeping wings.
Angels don’t appear as females
as often as they appear as males.
Angels don’t age.
Angels don’t die.
Angels are not subject to the limitations of humans.
Angels are not naive and are incredibly wiser than humans.
Angels are not as smart, wise, or powerful as God is.
Angels aren’t God.
(Angels are servant-beings created by God.)
Angels aren’t omnipotent.
They aren’t all-powerful. Only God is omnipotent.
(Jeremiah 32:27 NIV: “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is any-
thing too hard for me?”)
Angels aren’t omnipresent. They can only be one place at a
time. Only God is omnipresent.
Angels aren’t omniscient. They do not know everything. Only
God knows everything. (See 1 John 3:20.) Regarding preaching
and certain spiritual matters, “the angels long to look into these
things” (see 1 Pet. 1:12 and Eph. 3:10). For example, God
knows when Jesus will return to earth, but the angels don’t.
Angels don’t have the power to create. They are created beings.
(Colossians 1:16: “For by Him [Jesus Christ] all things were created:
things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him
and for Him.”)
Angels don’t leave footprints.
Angels don’t always show up immediately. (Remember
Daniel 10?)
Angels don’t receive any hint of worship. Angels are not to be
Angels don’t languish around on clouds all day playing harps.
They are mighty spiritual warriors. Jesus is the embodiment of
their victory and ours as well.
Angels don’t eat manna. (Manna is called “angel food” in
Psalm 78:25 to denote its superior excellence.)
Angels don’t ever interfere with God’s will.
God’s angels will never bring you personal messages from
dead persons.
Angels aren’t wimps. They possess superhuman physical
strength. An angel rolled away a stone weighing almost a ton
from in front of Jesus’ tomb.

Mary June 12, 2013 at 10:52 am

I am a Christian woman. For the last two years I have been hearing voices. At least at first I thought they were voices. I then went to a Christian counselor and she told me they were demon voices. I proceeded to continue with counseling for some time. Also, I was finally able to share my problem with one of my friends. We then got together with two other friends and we fasted and prayed together. I have opened up my whole story also to my local pastor and his wife. They have anointed me with oil, prayed and fasted for me also. My friends and my pastor and his wife have all came to my residence and anointed my house with oil and prayed. I have attended several nights of meetings with an anointed minister who has prayed for many people to be set free from demonic oppression. I feel blessed to have so many fine Christians praying for me. However, I am still being oppressed by these demonic voices. Does anyone know of a minister that specializes in this kind of deliverance? Any advice or website or other help would be appreciated.

Britt December 4, 2013 at 8:06 am

I Have several question that I am really concern about.
I am married to the wonderful man who was previous
Married before me. We’re both under the impression that his ex-wife is involved in witchcraft and is trying to destroy us with it,But our faith is so strong in God that it’s not harming us spiritually. My question is could this be considered a demon. What should we do to continue to fight this demon. Should I confront her with it. Pray is the only key.

Donna January 12, 2015 at 6:56 pm

It’s not a nice situation to be is, but just remember that whatever gets thrown your way…Jesus is greater.

Greater is he who lives in you than he who lives in the world.

The Holy Spirit will always be stronger and more powerful than the devil; so lean on God, His promises, His truth, and focus on Him. Everything that He gives us, is all we need. Prayer is very important yes, it is in itself a spiritual weapon. Remember that God’s Word is powerful, and that the darkness cannot fight against the light no matter what.

As Christians we are in a position of power and authority over evil / the darkness.

You should pray for her, that she sees God’s truth and the truth in what she’s doing / being invoked in. People often do not realise what they are doing and the harm it can have.

The Bible says: Proverbs 26:2 (NIV)
“Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow,
an undeserved curse does not come to rest.”

Demons do have an effect on how we think and potentially therefore also act too. They want to influence us, and we must stand against and not be pulled away from God’s truth into their lies. So yes, she is likely to be under the influence of satan and his army of demons, to desire to do what she is doing in the first place.

Charlie Mae Brown January 18, 2014 at 11:05 pm

I had a dream that God usually gives me when He prompts me to write or begin a Christian novel and the main thing was about aliens being fallen angels. I have yet to see an article about aliens on your website and i would be excited to read it to cross reference with what information I do have. Please reply as soon as possible.

Jase December 31, 2014 at 5:53 am

Would Also like to read/gain some knowledge about this

Jase December 31, 2014 at 5:41 am

I have some questions I am in search for some answers of… Do Angels have tails? I know this may be a funny question but the reason being is that if you believe that someone you know is either an Angel or a Demon and you believe you have seen a tail behind them in a picture. How would you be able to tell the difference? This is very real for me right now and am looking for serious guidance if any one could please help, Thank you for your time God Bless

Jack Wellman December 31, 2014 at 10:58 am

Thank you Jase for your questions. I see no evidence in the Bible where Satan or any of the angels have tails or that it’s said that they don’t have tails. Like angels, Satan and the demons don’t have physical bodies and are spirit beings and cannot be seen. I have never heard of any description of angels and what they look like exactly except for a few verses in Ezekiel. I wished I could have been more help sir.

Is it possible for there to be an angel half demon an if so what type of child would he have if he impregnated a women? An what will happen to the world if this happens?

Thank you “Unknown” for your question. Angels cannot bear children for they have no sex organs…and a demon is a fallen angel, therefore an angel cannot impregnate women because as Jesus said, angels are neither male nor female as you can read in Matthew 22:23-33 and I would talk to your pastor about this and see if he doesn’t agree.

Good day,

Please can you help. My boyfriend says that he has demons in him and that they have been with him for centuries. His psychiatrist said that it is a mental condition and that it is just voices. All I know is the one voice spoke to me via sms and admitted to being a demon and that I wont ever be able to sage my boyfriend. He has also admitted to hating me and wanting me gone. My boyfriend has also told me that he has send one of his demons to protect me. When my boyfriend loses his temper his voice does change and it doesn’t sound like him at all and he has strangled his own mother before and cannot recall anything afterwards and he is extremely tired and drained. I do not know whether this is demons or what. Please help with some advise or guidance on what I need to do.

Thank you

Hello Tanya, I am sorry to hear about how troubled your boyfriend is. From what you are saying it seems that he is a very troubled man. Being bothered by demons is NOT a mental condition according to the Bible. It is a matter of the heart. When someone is bothered by demons it is because they are not relying upon the Holy Spirit to influence their life choices. It is true you cannot save your boyfriend, the only One who can save him is Jesus and when he believes in what Jesus did for him on the cross the Holy Spirit will take up residence in his heart. When the Holy Spirit is there and he allows Him to influence his choices he will not be bothered by demons. The Bible says “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” (1 John 4:4). Also read Ephesians 1:12-14, Ephesians 4:30 which tells us that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit when we believe.

Tanya, I am concerned for your safety. Also, if you are a believer and he is not, I am concerned that you are not with the right man. The Bible is very clear about whom we should seek to spend most of our time with. My friend Jack wrote a great article about this here: You might want to consider whether or not your relationship with this young man is something that is pleasing to God and healthy for your walk God.

are we to command angels?

Pamela Rose Williams November 19, 2015 at 10:07 am

Hello Joanne,

That is a very good question and also one that many Christians ask. In fact, many believe that we, as humans, have the authority to command angels. However, I cannot find any Scriptural evidence that we command angels. On the contrary. Here are some Bible examples that I thought you would like to study:

– When Moses needed to be brought out of Egypt, he cried out to the LORD … and the LORD send an angel. He did not call out for an angel (Numbers 20:16).

– When Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego worshiped God rather than the evil King Nebuchadnezzar so the King threw them into a fiery furnace. They called upon God and God sent an angel to rescue them (Daniel 3:17-18; 3:28; 6:22).

– When Peter was in prison his friends in the church at Jerusalem prayed without ceasing to the Lord and the Lord sent an angel to rescue him (Acts 12:5, 11). When Peter showed up at their door they were so surprised it is clear that they did not command an angel.

– Angels are called God’s “holy angels,” who respond to Him, not us (Matthew 25:31; Revelation 14:10).

Angels are real and God sends them to bring messages and protection. We should not try to call angels nor pray to them. We call out to God and He will send angels when He deems necessary.

I hope this is helpful to you Joanne.
