There is so much evil today, but how much worse is this evil when some rejoice in the death of the righteous like Charlie Kirk?
There is so much evil today, but how much worse is this evil when some rejoice in the death of righteous people like Charlie Kirk? We know from Scripture that God does not rejoice or delight when a wicked person dies, whether it is by murder or some illness or accident. He doesn’t even gloat over the death of His own enemies, and neither should we. I notice that when prominent scientific atheists die (like the late Dr. Stephen Hawking) there was no rejoicing over his death in Christian circles. Believers do not celebrate the death of someone (or anyone) that was hostile to Christianity. Even of those who publicly hated the idea of there being a God, typically, no Christian’s rejoiced over their demise. On the other hand, we have seen numerous public figures and many others almost take joy in the death of Charlie Kirk. Either on social media or in public comments, many non-believers (including many celebrities) stated that they were almost glad he was killed, but no one should be glad at the murder of an innocent person like Charlie Kirk (Turning Point USA). [1] For that matter, we should not be glad at the death of our own enemies. God has said, “For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord GOD; so turn, and live” (Ezk 18:35). He desires that all men turn to Him and be saved and He never takes pleasure in anyone’s death, even those who hate Him. The Apostle Peter said, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Pet 3:9). That should be our wish too.
The Two Witnesses
Near the end of the ages, and just prior to the consummation of the Kingdom, God has prepared for two witnesses to appear and to give the world one last and final warning before the wrath of God comes pouring down from heaven. Revelation 11:3 states, “And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.” The sackcloth represents God’s desire that they repent and the 1,260 days is three and a half years. And no one could touch them then, because “if anyone would harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes. If anyone would harm them, this is how he is doomed to be killed” (Rev 11:5). They also “have the power to shut the sky, that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying, and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every kind of plague, as often as they desire” (Rev 11:6). Naturally, Satan hates the truth, so after “they have finished their testimony, the beast that rises from the bottomless pit will make war on them and conquer them and kill them” (Rev 11:7).
The World Rejoices
After these two witnesses are murdered, what is the world’s reaction? Scripture tells us that “For three and a half days some from the peoples and tribes and languages and nations will gaze at their dead bodies and refuse to let them be placed in a tomb” (Rev 11:9). They don’t even want these martyrs to have a proper or respectful burial. They’d rather see their corpses rot in the sun before they go to the trouble of giving them a decent burial. In fact, “those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and make merry and exchange presents, because these two prophets had been a torment to those who dwell on the earth” (Rev 11:10). How shameful that anyone would rejoice over someone’s intentional death, especially those who are godly, yet the world throws a party! The witnesses will make that celebration suddenly stop because “after the three and a half days a breath of life from God entered them, and they stood up on their feet, and great fear fell on those who saw them” (Rev 11:11). The party and celebration will end, rather abruptly.
Don’t Rejoice at Someone’s Death
We should mourn over the deaths of those who are not believers and not rejoice because we know where they’re headed. Surely we wouldn’t want our worst enemy to end up in eternal punishment, would we? I hope not. God doesn’t take pleasure in that. God warns us, “Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles” (Prov 24:17), and yet that’s just what the world does. Job, a righteous man before God (Job 1) said, “If I have rejoiced at the ruin of him who hated me, or exulted when evil overtook him” (Job 31:29). Job said, “I have not let my mouth sin by asking for his [enemy’s] life with a curse” (Job 31:30), so clearly the Bible teaches that it is sin to wish for harm to come to others…including our enemies. We’re to bless them when cursed, pray for them when persecuted, and love then when we’re hated (Luke 6:27-28). If you take pleasure in the death of anyone, enemy or not, the Lord God “will see it and be displeased, and turn away his anger from him” (Prov 24:18), and toward you, possibly.
Conclusion
I pray you harbor no evil thoughts about unbelievers or wish harm on those who oppose God or rejoiced at their death. Clearly, that is sin. And remember; Jesus died for us, even while we were still ungodly, wicked enemies of Him (Rom5:6-10). Foremost, I pray that you have put your trust in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. If that has not happened yet, my friend, you are in real danger of hell fire. And I mean, in immediate danger. You’re one breath, one heartbeat…one accident away from eternity when it will be too late to repent. Today is the best day to believe (2 Cor 6:2) since tomorrow is no guarantee. If Jesus Christ came today, here is your fate (Matt 7:21-23). This is why I plead with you as you read this, repent today…and I mean right now. Put your trust in Jesus Christ. If you do not, you will face God’s judgment after death guaranteed (Heb 9:27) or at Jesus Christ’s appearance (Rev 20:12-15), which could happen at any moment.
