One of my favorite posters is one that is filled with the names of Jesus. From a short distance, it presents Jesus in all of His majesty by the listing of numerous names for Him found in the Bible. In fact, we attended a church while we lived in Florida that had the names of Jesus engraved in glass and illuminated on the back wall behind the pulpit. It was definitely a focal point in the church and one that literally brought light to His awesomeness.
Isaiah 9:6 “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
We find many references to Jesus in the Bible. Besides his given name of Jesus, there are some other names that refer to Jesus [1] that indicate His person and position. Likewise, there are references that tell us how Jesus was described in the Old Testament and there are references that tell us how Jesus was described in the New Testament. But, there are many more names for Jesus found in the Bible that indicate Who He is, both directly and indirectly.
A Few Examples of Names for Jesus?
There are literally dozens more names that are given referring to Jesus Christ. If you look hard enough you could probably write an entire book on those names and their significance to both things on earth and in heaven above. The following are a few examples (1):
- Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8)
- Bridegroom (Matthew 9:15)
- Corner STONE (1 Peter 2:6)
- Counselor (Isaiah 9:6)
- Day Star (2 Peter 1:19) Note: Bibles that use corrupted manuscripts unwittingly use the term Day Star to describe Satan in Isaiah 14:12, which has led some people to believe that Jesus and Satan were both angels and even twin brothers in some circles!
- Everlasting FATHER (Isaiah 9:6)
- Governor (Matthew 2:6)
- High Priest (Hebrews 5:10)
- Intercessor (Isaiah 59:6)
- Morning Star (Revelation 2:28, 22:6)
- Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)
- Prince of Life (Acts 3:15)
- Resurrection and the Life (John 11:25)
- Good Shepherd (John 10:11)
- Great SHEPHERD (Hebrews 13:20-21)
- The Truth (John 14:6)
- Vine (John 15)
- Wonderful (Isaiah 9:6)
Jesus – Direct and Indirect References
In addition to these verses, there are many more references that may not be specific names for Jesus, but are used when referring to Jesus both directly and indirectly as follows:
- Her seed – “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel” (Genesis 3:15).
- A Lamb (Genesis 22:8; Revelation 5:6; Revelation 7:17; Revelation 14:10; Revelation 19:9; Revelation 22:3).
- The Lamb of God (John 1:29; John 1:36)
- A Prophet – “The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken” (Deuteronomy 18:15);
- Redemption (Psalms 130:7; Luke 21:28; 1 Corinthians 1:30; Hebrews 9:15)
- Righteousness (Malachi 4:2; 1 Corinthians 1:30)
- Sanctification [2] (1 Corinthians 1:30)
- Sun (Malachi 4:2)
- The Stone or Corner Stone (Isaiah 28:16; Acts 4:11; Ephesians 2:20)
- The Word (John 1:1; John 1:14; 1 John 5:7)
- Wisdom (1 Corinthians 1:30)
- Word of God (1 Kings 12:22; 1 Chronicles 17:3; John 1:1; John 10:35; Romans 10:17’ 1 Peter 1:23; 2 Peter 3:5)
While there are many more names that can be mentioned, it is clear that no matter how He is referred to, His name is above all names and at the name of Jesus, every tongue will confess and every knee will bow (Romans 14:11; Philippians 2:9-11).
Conclusion
We find many references to Jesus in the Bible. There are names that refer to Jesus that indicate His person and position. There are names that tell us how He was described in the Old and New Testaments. And finally, there are names that indicate Who He is, both directly and indirectly. But, no matter what name is used, there is only one name under heaven whereby we must be saved, Jesus Christ of Nazareth (Acts 4:10-12). May we live our lives in a way that brings nothing, but glory, and honor, and exaltation to His name!
