Fear is an emotional reaction that holds us back from seizing the moment. Yes, people often get stuck in life because of their fears. Some fear losing friends or family, while others fear losing fortune or a career. Whatever the fear, it is detrimental to your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Fear can also be associated with danger and uncertainty. For instance, some people are afraid of moving to a new city or trying new things because they are uncertain of its success, however, when we don’t try new things, we don’t grow in our life.
Perception and Fear
Psychologists say that fear is neither good nor bad. It helps us make right decisions, but for most people, the feelings of fear are based on how they perceive things. If you think a dog is dangerous, you’ll be afraid of it. On the other hand, if you think it’s a cute pet, you’re more likely to reach out and pet the dog because you’re not worried about getting bite. Hence, it is our perception that generates fear, and it is our perception that will help us overcome it. It’s not healthy to hold onto the fear of things or be worried about the situations in your life. There are certain ways to handle these feelings of fear. In fact, you can replace them with healthier ones.
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love (1 John 4:18).
5 Ways to Deal With Fear
1. Find Out What You Fear and Accept It
The first strategy to overcoming a fear is to find out about it and then accept it. People often ignore things or situations which exert pressure on their nerves, and they’re often not ready to accept their shortcomings, but acceptance is the key to overcome any fear. You don’t need to be ashamed of your fears, they’re natural, and everyone has them. If you don’t recognize your fear, you won’t be able to overcome it. Therefore, have a talk with yourself, assess your personality, and find the things that give you a pause for thought. For instance, if you have a fear of not getting good grades in the exams, maybe you should talk with your instructor and ask them how you can study habits and lesson your fears about exams. Remember, fear is not designed to immobilize us, but rather motivate us to get up and face the situation, and do so boldly like a conqueror.
2. Collect Information and Analyze the Situation
Fear of something that has not happened is due to a lack of information, so what you should do is examine the situation and educate yourself about it by getting as much information as you can so you can go over the things/situations that are bothering you. Collect facts rather than speculations. You need to take your time if you’re moving into a new situation in life, like a new job, moving to a new city, or getting married. Important decisions always cause fear because of the uncertainty is associated with change. Don’t rush your decisions; pause and analyze the situation first; look at the pros and cons to help you be more objective and come up with the right solution, and you’ll fear less.
3. Share and Seek Help
It’s true that you have to face your fears, but that doesn’t mean you can’t seek help! I’ve heard it said that sharing a problem cuts it in half, and the same goes for fear. When you share your feelings or discuss your fears with an intelligent and compassionate person, you’re more likely to get good advice. There’s no harm in finding a mentor and discussing what you’re afraid of. In this way, you not only get your feelings out in the open, you get help from a mentor who better understands your fears. Even if they don’t give you advice, you’ll feel better just getting that off your chest. Saying it out loud may actually decrease your fear. Face your fear with faith!
Finding a mentor is not difficult; children have parents or friends, students have teachers, athletes have coaches. Some companies encourage new hires to meet with their supervisors on a regular basis for feedback and to seek help if they have any issues.
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed (James 5:16a).
4. Keep a Positive Attitude
Next, you can overcome your fear by keeping a positive attitude. Brian Tracy- a very famous American-Canadian motivational speaker wrote, “What else would you consider if you are so sure about success in any undertaking? Would you try out new alternatives or still work for longer hours or just leave the efforts. Successful people are those who keep on trying and never leave their positive thoughts even while others have given up. You must have heard, Try try again until you succeed.”  Do you know that reading a book about your specific fear is a good way to overcome it? A good book can open doors for you and let you finally walk through it. Similarly, you can listen to motivational speakers to get in a more positive frame of mind.
5. Take Good Diet
I’m sure many of the readers must think about how diet can help them overcome their fears, but it’s true! A healthy diet can have a considerable impact on overcoming your fear. Did you know that processed sugar, preservatives, sweeteners, and other chemicals in our daily diet can have a bad impact on our bodies, making it lose its natural balance? These compounds increase anxiety-causing hormones and that makes us more prone to have fear and stress. That’s why it’s important to eat a healthy diet which should include fruits, vegetables, and whole grain foods. And exercise only makes you healthier. A healthy diet and regular exercise increase the levels of healthy hormones in our body. These not only keep us physically fit, they reduce stress and fear, helping our coping mechanisms.
