What Is the Romans Road to Salvation? Scriptures and Commentary

by Pamela Rose Williams · Print Print · Email Email

When I was a new Christian I heard about the Romans Road to Salvation and someone even quoted all the verses to me. The problem is that I did not yet understand the meaning behind the scriptures, so I found it to be a little confusing.  New believers and unbelievers are often turned off by the gospel message when it becomes confusing. The Apostle Paul said “But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:3). Finding the way to Christ is simple and the Romans Road is a great path to get there.

Romans Road to SalvationNo one can make us believe the truth of the gospel, but every believer is able to teach anyone about it. When you are a believer you are “in Christ” and therefore you have the power to teach others about Him. The Romans Road witnessing method has been used for years and years and has been proven to be an effective way to teach folks about Jesus and why they need Him as their Savior.

The Romans Road walks you along through the scriptures that Paul wrote to the Romans. In these few passages you can see and explain to an unbeliever everyone’s sinful condition and the remedy through Jesus Christ. It is a road full of hope and inevitably when someone is willing to trade in their own thinking and agree with God, they will see their need for a Savior.

The Problem

To apply a remedy you must first admit that there is a problem. Admitting that you are a sinner is the first step on the Romans Road. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden they committed the first sin. Since that time every human  has been born with that sin nature.

Romans 3:10 As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

Romans 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

The Bad News

Because we have sinned God expects a payment (wage) for that sin. The only payment He accepts is death. The place that God has prepared for sinners is called Hell. All human’s destination is Hell because they are all sinners. Death is what we deserve because we owe a debt for our sin.

Romans 6:23a For the wages of sin is death

The Good News

There is good news! God loves us so much that He offered His only begotten Son, Jesus to pay our sin debt for us. This is a gift. The gift is available to every human. When we believe that Jesus died for us to pay our debt, personally, we can have life ETERNALLY. At the moment we believe in what Jesus did on the cross our destination changes from Hell to Heaven when we leave this earth.

Romans 6:23b but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord

Such a big promise

A couple more steps on the Romans Road show us more promises from our Heavenly Father.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us

Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

You have a choice and it’s personal

God wants to hear it from you. He wants you to confess (profess) that Jesus is the only One perfect enough to pay your sin debt and that you believe Jesus died on the cross for you. God wants you to make it personal.  When you feel that nudging at your heart it is because the Holy Spirit is calling you to believe. You believe in your heart and when you say it out loud that is so everyone else around you can rejoice in your decision to accept Jesus as your Savior.

It is not necessary for you to do anything but believe.

You do not need to join a church.

You do not need to walk an aisle.

You do not need to complete a decision card.

You do not need to repeat a sinner’s prayer.

You do not need to do anything.

Jesus did it all

Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Newness of life

When you have shared this Romans Road to Salvation with someone and they believe the gospel of their salvation the Holy Spirit comes into their heart and gives them the power to walk in newness of life here on earth. The next thing that this new believer needs is someone to walk along side of them as they learn how to walk with the Lord – this is called discipleship. Learning about the Lord and His ways is essential to growing as a new Christian.

Be His witness

I hope that if you are a new Christian or even one who has been walking with the Lord for a long time that this will help you to understand how this method can be used as a great witnessing tool to lead someone to Jesus. If you have known the Lord for a long time and have not come along side of anyone else who needs discipleship, I pray that you will surrender to that call. Everyone needs someone and that someone might be you!
