Quotes About the Bible: 25 Awesome Sayings

by Daryl Evans on August 12, 2012 · Print Print · Email Email

The Bible is God’s written word to us.  Sometimes I think that we all either forget that or we do not fully embrace that.  We will save letters from a loved one or spouse and read them time to time to remember the words and the feelings of the letter.  Maybe you have saved letters from a high school sweetheart (if you were born before myspace, or the facebook and twitter era).  You remember opening the letter and just pouring over the words.  That should be our mindset when we open the Bible.  We should see it as God’s words to you and to me.  It is not just an information book of do’s and don’ts but rather it is a book about God.  I have compiled some quotes about the Bible.  Some of these are from famous people or authors and some of these quotes are from skeptics of the Bible.  Read these quotes and fall in love again with the Word of God.

Featured Bible Quote About The Bible Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Awesome Quotes About The Bible

Isaiah 40:8 The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.

Quotes From Presidents

“Within the covers of the Bible are the answers for all the problems men face.”Ronald Reagan

“Take all that you can of this book upon reason, and the balance on faith, and you will live and die a happier man. (When a skeptic expressed surprise to see him reading a Bible)”Abraham Lincoln

“But for this book we could not know right from wrong.”Abraham Lincoln

“I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from The Savior of the world is communicated to us through this Book.”Abraham Lincoln

Quotes From Scholars, Theologians and Pastors

“The Bible is very easy to understand. But we Christians are a bunch of scheming swindlers. We pretend to be unable to understand it because we know very well that the minute we understand, we are obliged to act accordingly.”Søren Kierkegaard, Provocations: Spiritual Writings of Kierkegaard

“There are times when solitude is better than society, and silence is wiser than speech. We should be better Christians if we were more alone, waiting upon God, and gathering through meditation on His Word spiritual strength for labour in his service. We ought to muse upon the things of God, because we thus get the real nutriment out of them. . . . Why is it that some Christians, although they hear many sermons, make but slow advances in the divine life? Because they neglect their closets, and do not thoughtfully meditate on God’s Word. They love the wheat, but they do not grind it; they would have the corn, but they will not go forth into the fields to gather it; the fruit hangs upon the tree, but they will not pluck it; the water flows at their feet, but they will not stoop to drink it. From such folly deliver us, O Lord. . . .”Charles H. Spurgeon

“The Holy Scriptures are our letters from home.” Augustine of Hippo

“Reading the Bible will help you get to know the word, but it’s when you put it down and live your life that you get to know the author.”Steve Maraboli, Life, the Truth, and Being Free

“It ain’t the parts of the Bible that I can’t understand that bother me, it’s the parts that I do understand.” Mark Twain

“Out of 100 men, one will read the Bible, the other 99 will read the Christian.”Dwight Lyman Moody

“The Bible was not given for our information but for our transformation.”Dwight Lyman Moody

“A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.”― Charles H. Spurgeon

“If you really want to be a rebel get a job, cut your grass, read your bible, and shut up. Because no one is doing that.”― Mark Driscoll

“A good church is a Bible-centered church. Nothing is as important as this–not a large congregation, a witty pastor, or tangible experiences of the Holy Spirit.”Alistair Begg

“You Christians look after a document containing enough dynamite to blow all civilisation to pieces, turn the world upside down and bring peace to a battle-torn planet. But you treat it as though it is nothing more than a piece of literature.”Mahatma Gandhi

“The reason you don’t like the Bible, you old sinner, is because it knows all about you.”Billy Sunday

“The primary purpose of reading the Bible is not to know the Bible but to know God.”James Merritt

Quotes from Those Who Are Skeptical About the Bible

“You believe in a book that has talking animals, wizards, witches, demons, sticks turning into snakes, food falling from the sky, people walking on water, and all sorts of magical, absurd and primitive stories, and you say that we are the ones that need help?”Dan Barker

“[The Bible] has noble poetry in it… and some good morals and a wealth of obscenity, and upwards of a thousand lies.”Mark Twain

“Alcohol may be man’s worst enemy, but the bible says love your enemy.”Frank Sinatra

“I have a problem with people who take the Constitution loosely and the Bible literally.”― Bill Maher

“To be fair, much of the Bible is not systematically evil but just plain weird, as you would expect of a chaotically cobbled-together anthology of disjointed documents, composed, revised, translated, distorted and ‘improved’ by hundreds of anonymous authors, editors and copyists, unknown to us and mostly unknown to each other, spanning nine centuries” Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion

“You can point to the alleged miracles of the Bible, or any other religious text, but they are nothing but old stories fabricated by man and then exaggerated over time.”Dan Brown, The Lost Symbol

“In the bible it says you have to forgive seventy times seven. I want you all to know, I’m keeping a chart.”Hillary Rodham Clinton

I included some quotes from people that don’t believe the Bible is true or real to remind us all that some are hopelessly lost and need to find God.  May we never be so callous that we forget that there are lost and hurting people around us everyday that need the hope and good news of Jesus Christ and the Bible.  I hope that these quotes remind you of falling in love with God for the first time.  God’s word helps us get to know the Creator.  God’s word should be revered and meditated upon.  It should be memorized and internalized.  Take some time today to be alone with God and in His word.  It will be time well spent with Him.

Praise Him!

Loved this Daryl,
Including the skeptic’s quotes also shows us that they too believe the Bible to be an important book…otherwise they wouldn’t bother ridiculing it, they would simply ignore it. The Bible is an irritant to those skeptics, while it is wonderful to we Christians. Thanks again, Daryl.
Yours in Christ,
Robert

Great quotes Daryl. I love this one that I am not sure where it came from but its like “I read the Word of God but the Word of God reads me.”

I suppose what skeptics dislike the most of The Holy Bible is that you cannot disprove any of it. Because if it was possible then it would be front page news. However, the idea of a creator God is the only true alternative to naturalist philosophies as the very laws of nature rebuke evolution and the big bang theory. And as you cannot test either of those, they are not truly science.
Us Christians believe that there is something supernatural that created what is natural and He has made Himself known through the Bible.

Great Article. I especially loved that you included quotes of skeptics. I know alot of skeptics and consider them to be my best friends because they remind me of why I am a christian. That and they remind me of gods word.

Love your saying about falling in love with God’s Word, Daryl! Great article, enjoyed the skeptics’ views…yes, we should pray for them. God calls us ALL to Him through His Son, Jesus. Right?
Have a blessed, Happy New Year, 2013, Daryl!

Did Rousseau (or, if not, who?) write: ‘Either the men who wrote the Bible were inspired by God- or they were Gods themselves, for it is too profound to be a mere work of man’.
