Can People Communicate With the Dead? A Christian Perspective

Can we communicate with the dead?  Is this possible according to the Bible?  Should Christians be trying to communicate with the dead?

Communicating with the Dead

I have heard about the many that portend to be able to communicate with the dead.  They hold séances and try to get in touch with the deceased in order to have their family or friends communicate with them.  They desire to ask them a question, see what’s on the other side, where they are at, and so forth.  The fact is that if they indeed do communicate with anyone in the spirit world, it is an evil spirit for the Bible states thatthe living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten (Eccl 9:5). Further, Solomon says, Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom (Eccl 9:10).  Even Isaiah records about the deceased that, They are now dead, they live no more; those departed spirits do not rise. You punished them and brought them to ruin; you wiped out all memory of them (Isaiah 26:14).

It is not wise for believers or unbelievers to try and communicate with the dead.  For one thing, the one that they are trying to call back from the dead may not be who they think it is.  There is a spiritual world out there full of demons who are fallen angels that chose to rebel with Satan and they love to mimic the deceased in order to have people fall into the trap of thinking that they are communicating with the dead.  This is truly dangerous territory for anyone to venture into and it is sin for unbelievers and for believers.

Saul Communicates with the Dead

In Deuteronomy 18:10-11 it says, Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead.” The punishment for this in the Old Testament was death because this is territory that humans have no business being in.  When Saul, being fiercely outnumbered by the Philistines, went to a medium at Endor, he asks the medium to call back Samuel for advice.  Here is the account in 1 Samuel 28:11-12 where the medium asked Saul,Whom shall I bring up for you?” “Bring up Samuel,” he said. When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!  Here we note that the medium was terrified because she actually saw Samuel called up and knew that he was dead.  The medium was shocked because she had likely never done this before and here was an actual person being called up from the dead – to her utter amazement and terror.

Then, Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” “I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has departed from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”  Samuel said, “Why do you consult me, now that the Lord has departed from you and become your enemy? The Lord has done what he predicted through me. The Lord has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. Because you did not obey the Lord or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the Lord has done this to you today.  The Lord will deliver both Israel and you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The Lord will also give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.” Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of Samuel’s words. His strength was gone, for he had eaten nothing all that day and all that night. When the woman came to Saul and saw that he was greatly shaken, she said, “Look, your servant has obeyed you. I took my life in my hands and did what you told me to do (1 Sam 28:15-21).

Notice that when the only time recorded in the Bible where someone actually did come back from the dead, it was to announce the death of the one who sought this (Saul).  The woman was terrified and she feared for her life, knowing that this was punishable by death at that time.  I believe this was the only exception because Saul was being disobedient and God had declared that David would be king years before.  Nothing good came out of this experience for Saul and the same could be said for anyone who tries to repeat such a thing as Saul did.

Can people communicate with the Dead

The Bible is clear that believers or unbelievers should not be consulting mediums, psychics, and witches.

The Bible on Consulting Mediums, Witches, Astrology’s and Psychics

The Bible is clear that believers or unbelievers should not be consulting mediums, psychics, and witches.  God alone is sovereign over the future and we have no business trying to know it.  No good thing will ever come from trying to do this.  In fact, it is a mystery to me why Christians read their horoscope to see what their day will be like when there is absolutely no evidence that using the stars to read the future works.  Worse than that, it is clearly sin.  Even Ouija boards are considered sin, even though most Christians may not see the harm.

The Bible has much to say about consulting with mediums, witches or psychics.

Isaiah 8:19When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?

Leviticus 19:31 “’Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.”

Leviticus 20:6I will set my face against the person who turns to mediums and spiritists to prostitute himself by following them, and I will cut him off from his people.”

2 Kings 21:6He sacrificed his own son in the fire, practiced sorcery and divination, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the eyes of the LORD, provoking him to anger.”

Isaiah 19:3The Egyptians will lose heart, and I will bring their plans to nothing; they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, the mediums and the spiritists.”

Isaiah 47:13All the counsel you have received has only worn you out! Let your astrologers come forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month, let them save you from what is coming upon you.”

Jeremiah 27:9So do not listen to your prophets, your diviners, your interpreters of dreams, your mediums or your sorcerers who tell you, ‘You will not serve the king of Babylon.”

Micah 5:12I will destroy your witchcraft and you will no longer cast spells.”

Conclusion

We have seen that the dead can not communicate with the living (Isaiah 26:14), that consulting mediums, witches, astrology’s, and psychics is sin (Duet 18:10-11), that such spiritists will be cut off from God forever (Lev 20:6), and that it all comes to nothing anyway (Isaiah 19:3).  God’s face is against anyone that tries to communicate with the dead, or consults mediums, psychics, witches, astrologers, and any kind of spiritist.  If you communicate with someone from the dead, it is not who you think it is.  Besides, once someone dies, they can not cross over again to the living (Luke 16:26).  Since fallen angels (demons) have lived for thousands of years, they know the traits and tendencies of deceased family members and can appear to sound like or look like those who are deceased.  It is dangerous for anyone to even try.  Once a person dies they are in only one of two places.  In torment and separated from God or with the Lord in a state of bliss.  In either place that soul will live forever.  It will be either in agony and regret or in joy and happiness…both will be forever.  Decide today where you will go after you die.  By placing your trust in Jesus Christ, I can assure you that it is a decision you will eternally live to never regret.

Great job again Jack. I had a Sunday school teacher who told us about when she was an unbeliever and used a Ouija board. What she saw really scared her when she used it. She went out and burned it. The next day, the Ouija board was whole again in her closet. You are completely accurate in what you have said. No one has business communicating with the realm of the dead. Demons are way stronger then anyone who takes them on in this matter. Once my teacher gave her life to God and repented, all of the demonic activity stopped. Thank you for your insight through the word on this matter. It was well written sir. God bless!

In His Name Always,
Derek

Thank you so kindly Derek. I agree with what you said…we are playing with fire when we are messing with the dark forces of fallen demons and its just not worth it. I used to read my horoscope but when I realized the source if it, it became a “horror-scope” and I have never messed with it again.

Yet another great article. I used to check my horoscope every day until I finally found God. Now I know my future is in his hands and trust that he knows what he’s doing with my life.

Thank you Michael. I appreciate it. I was like you and used to check my horoscope and since God saved me and I placed my trust in Christ, I check the Bible and rely on it to know the future. I like what you said that we can place our future in His hands and trust in God.

I am a christian and have heard and seen things from the dead since I was a child. It is usually a warning telling me that something will happen that is not good. I then tell the person and either it happens or they avoid it. Cannot believe this is bad, have kept some from being killed or killing themselves. I never seek for the dead or whoever does to contact me it just happens. I have never asked for any payment for this and was warned in a dream never to ask for anything when telling someone.

Thank you Judy for your comment. I am concerned about your post. Do you hear audible voices from the dead? Are they people you know? Are they deceased relatives? You received warnings that kept others from being killed or killing themselves? Are you certain that these are not angels or that they might be demons who, the Bible teaches, can appear or act as “angels of light” and can imitate deceased people closely since they knew the dead. Are the voices a whisper and accompanied by spirit-like bodies? I see that they are communicating to you and you are not soliciting them to speak or come to you. Whether you believe it is not bad is not the issue but if they are coming to you and not you to them is a different issue. The Bible says that the dead can not cross back over to life (see above Scriptures) so I just was wondering if you had more on these experiences. I am not saying that these are bad…but this article referenced Bible verses and are not my own opinion. Have you told your pastor or priest?

Jack, my boss would disagree with you on this, every Monday morning he would swear he’s communicating with the dead when he’s talking to me (just a bit of humor). Seriously though, it seems that, aside from the danger inherent in speaking to unidentified disembodied spirits, the problem with seeking this type of communication reveals that we are not fully trusting God with our lives. Jack, you showed clearly where the Bible forbids this type of communication. Therefore, it can’t be right to do it. I have heard other claims that the spirits are helpful, etc. But they will only be helpful long enough to gain a person’s trust and allegiance. If I a demon came right out and said, “I’m a demon, follow me”, not many would fall for that. These ‘spirits’ want to appear good, so that good people will be deceived into following them. As you said Jack, they can appear as angels of light. Anyway, the safest thing to do is to trust God with all your heart, soul, mind, body, and strength. He will protect us and lead us from this, or any other, type of deception.
Hey, great article, by the way. As you can tell, it really got me thinking.
God bless you brother.
Yours in Christ,
Robert

Thank you so kindly Robert. I agree so much with the Monday morning bit and that applies to me as well. As you said, these spirits don’t come out and tell you who they are but I have had other people tell me these same things and that they believe that they are sincere and yet, so are many who are even behind the pulpits today. I will not name them, but they are preaching a little bit of the gospel with a little bit of deception and though they appear as being right, they are deceiving others by mixing truth with error. I appreciate you, as always my friend.

Hi Jack,

Great job again! I also remember my sister telling me, before she used to study palmistry and every time she is reading one’s palm, there is someone muttering to her ears. She usually had goosebumps and now she is no longer doing it. She is a renewed Christian now. Thanks again!

What comes to mind is a series of books I read in the late 70’s called “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant”, in that story a high lord used the staff of life to bring a dead hero from the past to life to seek advice, boy was that a mistake! With the words “You Fool!!!!” the dead hero roared, “you have violated ALL the laws of the land, now there will be no holding back the evil one”, or words to that effect. The point? Not even Fantasy writers want to touch that issue, and if they do, People are the worse for it. Keeping that in mind I have heard of friends who used Quija Boards and had some rather bad results. The bottom line, unless you want to open yourself to demons, it would be wise to let the dead lie. As Jack pointed out there are demons who look for this opening and they WILL avail themselves of your INVITATION to enter. Once the invitation is given any number of bad spirits will begin to show up, often times with disastorous results for the poor sod who summoned them. Speak to the dead? Absolutely, incontrovertibly, immutably NOT!!

Illicit communication with “the dead” is a great example of the spiritual war that rages on unnoticed by the world. Jesus told the rich man that no one is good but God. I would suppose that Jesus meant spiritual beings as well as physical ones when He said that.

The point is, any demon or fallen will do anything to molest God’s creation.

Had a sunday school student ask for a lesson on using the ouiji board, and since we have had a lot of people move into our small town who claim to be in touch with spirits I though it a very important subject to use. Couldn’t really find a lesson that fit the bill, until now — thanks so much for the great article!

Recently, I was watching the Ricky Lake show. She had a psychic and a person who communiated with the dead. People who had lost loved ones who disappeared wanted to know if their loved one was dead. One person received a message that the psychic did not sense that their loved one was dead after 18 years. Only that the circumstances were such that the mother thought it best if she did not return in addition to the fact that she was held hostage to prevent her from revealing a murder of a friend. I listened, and I thought that perhaps these are familliar spirits. Yet, Jesus said that if we believe in Him we will not die. My aunt lost a son to sudden impact. She is a christian as am I. She said that her son appeared to her as she lay on his bed in their home and said “I’m okay mom. I’m alright.” This was the gist of most of the Ricky Lake show that these people needed to be comforted. I think mediums may be at risk, because they communicate continually. Perhaps, my aunt saw her son’s angel, and he was comforting her so that she could get through the grieving process. I never met my grand mother she died before I was born, and sometimes, I want to know the circumstances of her passing, and any word that she would leave to me as her grand child and my mother, as I believe my mom did not even get to say goodbye to her.

Thank you Victoria for your comment. I agree that mediums are at high risk because they are messing with things they know not and they can easily be overtaken by an evil spirit, plus they will face the wrath of God someday for God says that trying to communicate with the dead is an abomination to him. Perhaps this article will help called “Will We Recognize Friends and Family in Heaven” at this link:

If I were Jewish I would be inclined to take a few quotes from the Hebrew Scriptures more literally. I am, however, Christian and my entires religion is based on a reality that is not necessarily visible. Communicating with non-physical reality is really what is at issue here – and if you don’t beleive you can do that then you wipe out Christianity. If the pupose of this article is to discourage people from spending money on prediction about the future then fine, otherwise it’s a home goal in every sense for Christianity.

Have you ever lost a loved one dear to your heart, like a son or a daughter? The need to know that he/she is okay and that their soul lives on could be overwhelming at times. If mediums can help by relieving the extreme sorrow and by helping dress the gaping wound, what wrong is it? The emotion of love is a gift from God in the first place.

Reply

Jack Wellman May 22, 2013 at 3:34 pm

Thank you Mrs. Conway for your comment. Yes, I have lost loved ones and if we love God we obey Him and He tells us to not communicate with the dead as it clearly says in dozens of places, like mentioned in this article, that it is sin. No where in the Bible does it say we should communicate with the dead. Mediums are an abomination to God and they will be judged by Him and to tamper with such evil spirits is very, very dangerous ground to be walking on, I must warn you. The “emotion of love” is not a gift of God but His grace to save us and to repent of what He condemns, like communicating with the dead.

Hello Krish. You must warn your wife. Tell your pastor about this. What has he said? This is very serious. Print this out or send her this link or go over the Scriptures mentioned in this article for God will not leave unpunished those who do such things. Is your wife a Christian? Is she saved? She may not be for Christians know that this is sin. Show her this article, pray for her, tell your pastor what to do. Does she go to church with you or do you go yourself? Act today for if she dies in this state, no promise of her not going to hell is sure. We are commanded to not communicate to the dead or pray to the dead. There is no gray area. Warn her today.

Thanks for replying, my wife and I dont go to church because we work on sunday and this is the only day our church operates. She get revelation for hours and tell her other sister what happened and whats going to happen like she can predict the future as well.

Her sister and my wife herself believe that their deceased sister is showing them things and comunicate.

Also the deceased sister have a little son where he always say mummy come to visit me every night and describes that she got wings and bright.

My wife told me that she sees things in her head and hear voices. The freaky part is they are not fake they 100% real vision.

Jack Wellman July 20, 2013 at 7:39 pm

I can not believe that your wife reads the Bible or prays, does she? You seem to be concerned that this is sin and so this makes me think you want to obey God and do the right thing. If your wife claims to be a Christian, then she should be in submission to you as you are her husband and can ask her to stop this (Eph 5). If she doesn’t submit to your request to stop this, then she is no Christian according to what Christian wives are supposed to be like.

As for your wife seeing these things and being 100% real, then what she is really seeing are demons who are taking the form of her deceased relatives. There is no other way possible, according to the Bible, which is true, that these are deceased persons for once the dead are passed away, they can not come back from there as the book of Hebrews says, ” it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment” (Heb 9:27). Men and women die…once, and then, they are judged so since, as the Bible says, that they are judged after death, they can not come back from being either in heaven or hell. These are facts…and I hate to say this but your wife is deceived and is playing with fire.

If the dead cannot cross back and communicate with the living, then how are the demons able to communicate with the living by taking the form of a deceased loved one. The demons and or fallen angels are also dead. Correct?

Reply

Jack Wellman September 23, 2013 at 10:34 pm

Thank you Beverly. Yes, the dead can not cross back and communicate with the living but the dead mentioned in this article are the deceased humans. Demons are alive and spirit and spirit can not ever die and even then, when they are finally cast into the lake of fire, they will still be alive but only in eternal torment. No, the demons or fallen angels are not dead but are still alive and forever more will be (Rev 20).

Thank you Mr. Rahme for your comment. Actually this is very serious as you noted. I would even go so far as to print this out and mail it to her. God also predicts the future but this always comes to pass. Ask them if they really want to know the powers of God Who predicts their future with razor precision as in Rev 20:11-15.

The Bible strongly condemns spiritism, mediums, the occult, and psychics (Leviticus 20:27; Deuteronomy 18:10-13). Horoscopes, tarot cards, astrology, fortune tellers, palm readings, and séances fall into this category as well. These practices are based on the concept that there are gods, spirits, or deceased loved ones that can give advice and guidance. These “gods” or “spirits” are demons (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). The Bible gives us no reason to believe that deceased loved ones can contact us. If they were believers, they are in heaven enjoying the most wonderful place imaginable in fellowship with a loving God. If they were not believers, they are in hell, suffering the un-ending torment for rejecting God’s love and rebelling against Him.

So, if our loved ones cannot contact us, how do mediums, spiritists, and psychics get such accurate information? There have been many exposures of psychics as frauds. It has been proven that psychics can gain immense amounts of information on someone through ordinary means. Sometimes by just using a telephone number through caller ID and an internet search, a psychic can get names, addresses, dates of birth, dates of marriage, family members, etc. However, it is undeniable that psychics sometimes know things that should be impossible for them to know. Where do they get this information? The answer is from Satan and his demons. “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve” (2 Corinthians 11:14-15). Acts 16:16-18 describes a fortune teller who was able to predict the future until the apostle Paul rebuked a demon out of her.

Satan pretends to be kind and helpful. He tries to appear as something good. Satan and his demons will give a psychic information about a person in order to get that person hooked into spiritism, something that God forbids. It appears innocent at first, but soon people can find themselves addicted to psychics and unwittingly allow Satan to control and destroy their lives. Peter proclaimed, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8). In some cases, the psychics themselves are deceived, not knowing the true source of the information they receive. Whatever the case and wherever the source of the information, nothing connected to spiritism, witchcraft, or astrology is a godly means of discovering information. How does God want us to discern His will for our life? God’s plan is simple, yet powerful and effective: study the Bible (2 Timothy 3:16-17) and pray for wisdom (James 1:5).

All you can really do at this point is mail this article to them and copy and paste my comments here and also forward this email and the link to it AND mail it using U.S. Mail by certified letter to make sure they get it. Otherwise, this satan stronghold can only be broken by the power of God alone. Let’s pray together and ask others to join with us sir.

I’d like some further insight on all this. I, too, since childhood, have experienced what I would call more intuition then speaking to the dead or hearing from them. I sometimes sense my deceased father around me when I am in need of comfort. I dreamed my mother’s bad car accident, as it happened, when I was 10. I didn’t ask for the dream. She survived the accident, so it wasn’t dead coming to me or me summonsing them. I have sensed alot of things that were going to happen. I don’t use these things in anyway and most of the time I don’t pay attention to my gut feelings as much as I probably should. It’s usually after the fact that I realize. When I was a single parent my daughter & I would answer each other without speaking prior. I once sensed her ill in daycare while I was at work. I heard her call out for me. I was at a wedding on the beach a few weeks ago. The bride wanted her deceased dad to be there. They do believe in communicating with loved ones that have passed. Especially her aunt. A bar swallow swooped in, I immediately thought of her dad & her aunt turned to me & shook her head yes as if an acknowledgement it was him. I thought it odd, I don’t believe in this, but thought the very thing she did. How do you explain things like this? Doesn’t God understand in any way that sometimes it isn’t people asking this to happen to them or they are only wanting to seek comfort to feel their loved ones are spiritually with them? Not that they are communicating but being watched over in angel form? Please explain as I want to be sure I am living in God’s desires, but I can’t help that I have high intuitions either or that things just come to me.

Thank you Debbie for your comment and question. As for your dream about your mom’s accident, dreams are just so random that we cannot put any real value in them and most often they are just coincidences. The Bible is my source for truth so what I believe doesn’t matter. We all have intuitions, this is nothing strange. I don’t see you have done anything wrong or sinned so God does understand and know your heart. We also have “gut feelings” too and these can come true because of our experiences in life have taught us things that we feel may happened do happen.

As for her aunt and a swallow swooping in, there is no way to know if that means anything o there is no way I could explain that but my sister lives on a farm and swallows fly into her house frequently. I cannot see God using a swallow to indicate that a lost loved one was “at the wedding” for God does not ever do such things. But as for they believing in communicating with the dead, they really aren’t communicating with the dead but with demons who are familiar with that lost family member or friend. I as saddedned that they believe in communicating with loved ones but glad you do not and do not get involved in this. The Bible forbids communicating with “familiar spirits” and they are called familiar spirits because demons can mimmick or imitate deceased family members and friends. Again, we all get intuitions but that doesn’t mean we have a gift or special ability from God. There are no such occurences in the Bible like that. Even so, you have not sinned in any way.
