What can we do when we are in desperate situations? Can we call on God? Can we depend on God? Can we trust in God?
These are sobering times that we live in today. Many people have lost jobs and can’t find one. Others are underemployed and are just barely making it. The unemployment rate is soaring, the stock market is highly volatile, and famine is spreading worldwide. Families are losing their homes due to failed mortgages. There are severe droughts, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, and tornadoes. And with turmoil going on in the world people are becoming desperate; even the people of God. What can we do when our backs are against the wall and we have no where to turn and we are in serious trouble?
God actually desires that we be utterly dependent upon Him and that we are in desperate need of His help. Think of a human father. What good father would not want his children to turn to him when they need help? Naturally, a father loves it when his children come to him to seek help. There is something special about having someone there for you. God is this true source and He is more reliable than any human father or mother.
God Says Call on Me For Help
God truly loves those that are His. He loves you! Listen to what God says for those who are in desperate situations and what He promises when they call upon Him:
Psalm 50:15 “and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”
Psalm 91:14-16 “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”
Psalm 145:18-20 “The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.”
Isaiah 41:17 “The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.”
Isaiah 55:1, 3 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.”
Isaiah 65:24 “Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.”
Jeremiah 33:3 “Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
Micah 7:7 “But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.”
God Says You Can Depend On Me
God wants us to depend on Him and not rely on ourselves. God is our Father and we are His children. Children can not make it in this world without their parents. How much more so can we not make it without the help of our Heavenly Father? If we try to solve our problems by our self then we can really do nothing to ultimately solve them. God is actually more glorified in our weakness because by His strength He is able to display His might. He stands ever ready, able, and willing to help us when we really need it but we must first acknowledge of our need for His help. We truly find freedom from worry when we learn to depend upon God. Read for yourself:
John 15:5 ““I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
Philippians 2:13 “for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”
1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. “
Matthew 28:20b “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 6:25-27 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”
Matthew 6:30-31 “If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?”
Romans 4:20-21 “Yet he [Abraham] did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.”
Philippians 4:19 “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
God Says You Can Trust in Me
Our money says “In God We Trust” but it is hard to trust when everything seems to be caving in around us. Nothing looks like it will turn out right. At times there is no evidence that God is even with us so how can we trust in Him during calamitous times? In reality, we can sometimes not even trust our eyes…but if there is anything in this universe you can trust, it is God Almighty. It is the invisible hand that is placed in ours that never lets go. Like a parent holding their child‘s hand, God is securely caring for us, never letting us slip or fall:
Isaiah 41:13 “For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear; I will help you.”
Proverbs 28:26 “Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.”
Jeremiah 17:5-7 “This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the LORD. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. “But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.”
Psalm 32:7 “You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”
Jeremiah 32:27 “I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”
Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Psalm 36:7 “How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.”
2 Corinthians 1:20 “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.”
2 Peter 1:4a “Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature.”
1 Chronicles 28:20 “David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished.”
Conclusion
When everything seems to be falling in around us, when the walls seem to be closing in on us, when nothing in our world or in this world seems to hold any hope, when everything looks completely hopeless, just remember that God is not ever caught by surprise. He will save those who are His from calamity (Heb 7:25). He isn’t ever going to abandon us, forsake us, or leave us. If you are not one of His then you do not have such hope nor can you claim any of His mighty promises. I pray right now that you seek Him because anyone who seeks Him He has said He can be found. As it is written in Isaiah 55:6 “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.” Second Corinthians 6:2 says, “For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you. I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” Tomorrow may be too late but it not too late right now to put your complete trust in Him, to depend on Him, to call on Him. i really need this because finances are really tight and my wife and I are barely making it and pray everyday for God to make a way will bookmark this to keep Gods promises before me to remind me each day.
Andrae, thank you so very much for your kind remark. One of the verses that I wished I had used was from Psalm 37:25 which says “I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.” God will never, ever forsake His own. It would be like a natural father or mother letting their children starve to death when they had the means to feed them. How much more so does God the Father Who owns all the universe let us beg bread. It will never happen. God bless you and your family.
I will pray for God’s provisions for you but with the comfort of knowing that we will never leave you nor forsake you as Hebrews 13:5b says ““Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (NIV)

to add what i have notice over the past few weeks is that God has made small provisions out of nothing i must say and that has helped us push through day by day. Praise be to God
It is my good pleasure Andrae. I am so thrilled that you found us. I have a Daily Prayer list that I will put you and your family down for God to help you with finances. God is faithful and always keeps His word and God just LOVES it when we claim promises made by Him to us and we remind Him in prayer that He will do what He has promised because He is God and can not ever lie and will never break His Word which is the Living Word, the Holy Bible. Even Jesus, Who is also God, said that the Scripture can not be broken (John 10:35).
Please pray for the success of my son who will be taking board exam on October and pray that he will go nearer to in prayer
Jack, this piece is soul-edifying and really very encouraging for me. I came on a mission training to kenya this february but hadn’t been able to make it back home since the end of the program in july due to lack of airfare. I was to proceed to tanzania from kenya for another training which was suppose to last till february of 2012 but unfortunately all envisaged funds failled and hence i lost my place in the program. Since july i’ve been praying, trusting and waiting on God for airfare back home but it seemed God was far away and i was almost losing confidence in God’s ability to provide but your message has really encouraged me tonight and i see my situation in a different way now. Emmanuel, thank you so much for such a wonderful comment. I must truly give all the glory to God for He alone is the object of my faith. He has never forsaken me nor failed me, even at times that I have turned my back on Him and in times that I showed a lack of trust and faith in Him. He shows Himself worthy…I have shown I am not. But praise God for His overflowing and abundant mercy on us and on me. I will be praying for you Emmanuel. Even your name tells me that He is with you for your name means “God with us.”
God will never send us off to do His will unless He provides a way for you to do it my friend. May God richly bless you and thank you for being a faithful servant of His to proclaim His name in the Great Commission, for which few are doing these days. Thank you for this article. I typed in desperate and it popped up! It spoke on everything that I am going through. I am raising my 3 sons alone while trying to start a business I have been doing it for a year ( christian daycare center). I am so close to getting the building licensed I can see I have spent everything on this. I was depending on my income tax return to finish up with everything and today I receive a notification the my return is being withheld. Often time I pray for others and encourage others in the Lord and He answers my prayers for others but for me…I just dont know…so the scriptures and the words of encouragement were right on time. If anyone reads this please pray for me!
Hi April, I saw your comment here and just had to reply. First to thank you for your heartfelt sharing of your circumstance. Also to let you know that I am praying for you in this. Please be encouraged to know that God ALWAYS answers prayers. He answers them in the way that is best for us. You may not always get the answer that you think is right or in the timely fashion that you desire, but be assured that God answers prayers in His time in His way. Just as these Scriptures that Jack collected and wrote here in this article were “right on time”.

Well I found out(well I actually already knew, so I was reminded) that I owe the state of Missouri a balance for the year 2005 and I did not file a state return for the year 2007. I’ve already gone to the state building to give them my info for 2007 so that the remaining funds may be released.
You are so right God is “right on time” He is teaching me to trust Him and also how important it is to be a good stewart ie. “pay my bills”. lol. I will definitely stay connected with this sight!
