Call On God For Help In Desperate Times

by Jack Wellman on September 10, 2011 · Print Print · Email Email

What can we do when we are in desperate situations?  Can we call on God? Can we depend on God?  Can we trust in God?

These are sobering times that we live in today.  Many people have lost jobs and can’t find one.  Others are underemployed and are just barely making it.  The unemployment rate is soaring, the stock market is highly volatile, and famine is spreading worldwide.  Families are losing their homes due to failed mortgages.  There are severe droughts, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, and tornadoes.  And with turmoil going on in the world people are becoming desperate; even the people of God.  What can we do when our backs are against the wall and we have no where to turn and we are in serious trouble?

God actually desires that we be utterly dependent upon Him and that we are in desperate need of His help.  Think of a human father.  What good father would not want his children to turn to him when they need help?  Naturally, a father loves it when his children come to him to seek help.  There is something special about having someone there for you.  God is this true source and He is more reliable than any human father or mother.

God Says Call on Me For Help

God truly loves those that are His.  He loves you!  Listen to what God says for those who are in desperate situations and what He promises when they call upon Him:

Psalm 50:15and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”

Psalm 91:14-16 “Because he loves me,” says the LORD, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.  He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

Psalm 145:18-20The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them. The LORD watches over all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy.”

Isaiah 41:17The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them.”

Isaiah 55:1, 3Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Give ear and come to me; listen, that you may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.”

Isaiah 65:24Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.”

Jeremiah 33:3Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”

Micah 7:7But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.”

God Says You Can Depend On Me

God wants us to depend on Him and not rely on ourselves.  God is our Father and we are His children. Children can not make it in this world without their parents.  How much more so can we not make it without the help of our Heavenly Father?  If we try to solve our problems by our self then we can really do nothing to ultimately solve them. God is actually more glorified in our weakness because by His strength He is able to display His might.  He stands ever ready, able, and willing to help us when we really need it but we must first acknowledge of our need for His help.  We truly find freedom from worry when we learn to depend upon God.  Read for yourself:

John 15:5 ““I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

Philippians 2:13for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.”

1 Peter 5:7Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. “

Matthew 28:20bAnd surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 6:25-27  “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?  Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

Matthew 6:30-31  “If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?  So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?”

Romans 4:20-21Yet he [Abraham] did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,  being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.”

Philippians 4:19And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

God Says You Can Trust in Me

Our money says “In God We Trust” but it is hard to trust when everything seems to be caving in around us.  Nothing looks like it will turn out right.  At times there is no evidence that God is even with us so how can we trust in Him during calamitous times?  In reality, we can sometimes not even trust our eyes…but if there is anything in this universe you can trust, it is God Almighty.  It is the invisible hand that is placed in ours that never lets go.  Like a parent holding their child‘s hand, God is securely caring for us, never letting us slip or fall:

Isaiah 41:13For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear; I will help you.”

Proverbs 28:26 “Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.”

Jeremiah 17:5-7This is what the LORD says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the LORD. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives. “But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.”

Psalm 32:7You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.”

Jeremiah 32:27 I am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

Psalm 36:7 “How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!  People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.”

2 Corinthians 1:20 “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.”

2 Peter 1:4aThrough these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature.”

1 Chronicles 28:20 “David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished.”

Conclusion

When everything seems to be falling in around us, when the walls seem to be closing in on us, when nothing in our world or in this world seems to hold any hope, when everything looks completely hopeless, just remember that God is not ever caught by surprise. He will save those who are His from calamity (Heb 7:25).  He isn’t ever going to abandon us, forsake us, or leave us.  If you are not one of His then you do not have such hope nor can you claim any of His mighty promises.   I pray right now that you seek Him because anyone who seeks Him He has said He can be found.  As it is written in Isaiah 55:6 “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.”  Second Corinthians 6:2 says, “For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.  I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”  Tomorrow may be too late but it not too late right now to put your complete trust in Him, to depend on Him, to call on Him.  This is my prayer for you.  Please contact us if you make such a decision.

Rajesh…I will pray for you. Have you contacted your local church yet? Talk to your pastor about this. Have you done this already? If not, why not. Churches are there to help fellow believes in the Body of Christ, the church.

I haven’t been to a church but I have been to a prayer conducted by a couple of my Christian friends. They prayed for me and told me that I will get an interview call in a week time and I will get a job. It’s been more than 2 weeks but nothing has happened. This is making me feel more depressed. I still believe in a miracle of god and am just waiting for it.

I will join with these Christian friends. Why have you not been to a church my friend? Is there something you don’t like about church? Churches have many believers who can pray for you all at the same time, they have resources, they know many people who attend who are employers, and Jesus said that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church that He built so we need the church and they need one another, right?

Thank you for your quick reply. Well I am a Hindu, while I was talking about my job to a consultant he told me that there is nothing we can do as you got only limited time. Then he said I know a friend of mine who lives in your city he prays to Jesus and he could tell you how it goes and he said his friends predictions would be accurate. So I rang his friend and he asked me if I am free. I said yeah then he asked me if I would like to join a prayer I said yeah and he came picked me up. He took me to a house where there are already 15-20 people who are ready to pray and they do this every week and I joined them and prayed.

I apologize sir…I didn’t realize that you didn’t have access to a local church. I assumed you were in a place that had churches and so I am so sorry for that. You did the right think. I will pray with these other believes and pray that God opens a door for you. Are you a practicing Hindu sir? Was there ever a time when you repented of your sins and trusted in Christ? Do you even know what this means my friend. Again, I am sorry for my mistake and not knowing where you were. As for this man that knows makes predictions, God does not approve or allow this for us to do but again, you probably didn’t know this either. Are you just now learning about Jesus Rajesh?

Forgot to answer your above question regarding if there is anything that I don’t like about church. I don’t have any such feeling and I respect everyone’s beliefs. Thank you

Yes sir I practice Hinduism and I am just getting to know much about Christianity now. But I know about Christianity as a kid because I did my schooling in a missionary school where we were taught by nuns whom we call sisters. It’s alright sir You don’t have to apologise and you know I am in just one of those phase where nothing is in my hands anymore and it’s only in the hands of god to make things happen to me. So I started believing in Jesus when I have heard he would answer our prayers. I even promised them that I will give a testimony in a church once I find a job and work visa. Thank you

Hi, lately my life has been mostly bad & the only thing I keep thinking about is ending it. Yes I think death would be better. I m tired of struggling & being underemployed. I have been looking for a job for a while & God has not opened any doors for me. It feels like he’s punishing me for something. My job just demoted me to a receptionist. This is the worst job on the entire company. If I had a choice I would starve rather than be forced to take this job. I know plenty of people who would love this job & God can give it to them. I put in so many resumes & this is what is given. I need to make more money not less. W&WY Isn’t anything working out? Why isn’t God helping me? I have an anxiety disorder amongst other things. I can’t take it anymore. Good bye

THank you Monroe for your open honesty. You know that Jesus had suffered more than any human ever. Have you ever see the Passion of the Christ? Wow. THat’s the way it really was. Jesus prayed 3 times to have the cup removed from Him before Calvary but the Father said no. He died for us when we didn’t deserve it and while still His enemies and wicked sinners (Rom 5). I pray you don’t do anything drastic because if a person commits suicide and they are not soundly saved, then they will have agony without end. I pray that you don’t. Seek counseling, talk to your pastor, talk with your doctor.

Hi, that’s not exactly an option for me. I can’t even afford Gas. I’m also not committing suicide. I had a really bad break down. I’m in my late 20 & I’ve pretty much been alone my entire life. Along with billions of people I’m underemployed & can’t support myself. Every advance or step I take life pushes me back about 10 steps. Based on your comment I sure hope I’m save. I do believe that jesus died for me & is my savior. But at this phase in my I feel like I’m the movie & God is sitting in the theater watching my life & throwing popcorn at the screen. Lol sorry that’s what it feel like. I know I’m not the only one suffering & life will never be a breeze for those that aren’t rich. But Jesus is mt Dad when will he show up? I know I’m handling this job thing wrong if this was a test I definitely failed. I don’t understand giving a job you know won’t lay my bills. That’s like me praying for a dollar & you giving me a penny & sending me on my way. I love the Lord but help right would help my faith. Just a little help. I’m not asking for a million dollars.

Thank you Monroe and my apology. I was misreading your comment so I am sorry for that. What I can do is pray for God to provide for your needs. I can understand what you are saying now. I once heard Abraham Lincoln has wrote “A tree can only be measured when it is fallen” meaning that the strength of our faith is revealed when we are down and on our backs. Have you spoken with your pastor about this? Sometimes churches provide help for those who need help and many churches have what is called a “Deacons Fund” or something else. I am glad you are saved…that is the main thing. Thank God for that my friend.

Dear Jack,
I want to thank you for praying for me. I had asked for prayers to get my Wedding Ring back since I had pawned it to pay real estate taxes. I have redeemed it! I had to borrow money to do so but at least I got it back!
Thank you so much for praying for me and praise be to the Lord!
My Husband and I are still in a bad financial situation with bills that we have trouble paying and properties that we need to sell. We are so tired! My Husband is up in Michigan trying to sell and we have been apart for over 2 months with no progress. This is very hard! We have had contracts but they just seem to fall through as though we are cursed. We pray and I have been tithing, even through the hard times.
Please pray that God will help us, remove this curse and bless us. Please pray that my husband will sell most if not all of our properties at a decent price very soon. We are running out of time and I really miss my husband. He is 78 years old and is in danger of losing every thing. We need to have solid sales and now.
Thank you so much and God Bless You.
Tessa

Staying in prayer for you my friend. I wonder how close Christ’s return is with all the trouble now in the world. He is our only hope. May God provide quickly your desperate needs.

Hi Jack,

I have been in this bad financial black hole for the last 2 year,my bills and bank loans are killing me! Most of the time i am left with just 100 dollars after paying all my bills and bank loans. I am not a christian yet but I do attend our local church on some Sundays. I don’t seem to have much luck with my love life,I am pretty good looking it is just that guys I have met are mostly not ready for commitment/marriage. I am currently dating someone,he too said he’s not ready.(Sometimes i think I have been cursed) I could only rely on GOD now to deliver me from all these miseries and hopefully you can help to pray for me as I am not too sure how to pray as effectively as most of you here. Thanks you in advanced and God Blessed:)

Hello Naomi…I will do as you request and pray that God sends you provision quickly but let me add that luck has nothing to do with it. God cannot help you in the way that He does for those who have repented and trusted in Christ. First of all, I want you to read this at: http://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/come-to-jesus/ and then this on how we are supposed to pray at this link: http://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/how-should-i-pray-a-biblical-analysis/ It is my hope that these two can help give you some answers.
