7 Prayers For Forgiveness and Repentance

by Derek Hill on April 21, 2013 · Print Print · Email Email

Forgiveness and repentance go hand-in-hand in a Christian’s life.  We must learn to always forgive others and to ask for forgiveness ourselves.  Without repentance, we are liable of judgment from God.  If we withhold forgiveness to others, forgiveness will also be withheld from us.  Here are 7 prayers focusing on forgiveness and repentance.  May we all strive to live as holy as possible by allowing the Spirit to convict us of our sins and to forgive others that sin against us.

Forgive Me

Father,

There are no words to express how filthy I feel every time I break Your heart.  The guilt and the shame are overwhelming!  Lord, I need Your touch right now.  I am so sick of being “born again” and still doing the things I hate doing.  Like Paul, I am conflicted.  “For I do not do what I want, but do the very thing that I hate.” (Romans 7:15) I am so sorry!  Father, I ask for Your forgiveness right now.  I am shocked that my life has come to a point where even some sins don’t affect me at all.  Father, I have some hard layers on my heart that need peeling.  Please give me a 100% heart of flesh.  The hardness is a barrier between us that I can’t stand!  I love You and I am so regrettably sorry for my selfish actions.  Thank You for Your forgiveness, Lord.  Without forgiveness I am nothing.  With Your forgiveness I am whole again.  I praise Your Name!  Amen

Strength To Forgive Others

Holy Lord,

With Your forgiveness I am whole again. I praise Your Name! Amen

With Your forgiveness I am whole again. I praise Your Name! Amen

I can’t seem to shake the harm that’s been done to me off my shoulders.  I am wallowing in the anger I feel.  Lord, I shouldn’t think the vengeful thoughts that I have.  You have called me to forgive every single person that wrongs me.  I need Your strength to overcome these trespasses against me.  Father, I want to forgive these people.  Please cast the devil’s evil ways from me.  I want to look at these people and see lost souls that need You.  I want to forgive them completely so that You can use me however You wish, to be Jesus to them.  Father, I am done with holding these grudges!  Forgive me for holding on to them.  I cast this burden at Your throne now.  Do with me as you please Father.  I love You and thank you for Your patience with me.  Amen

Why Lord?

Beautiful Lord,

Why do You forgive us?  We shout praises to You when we sing worship.  With the same tongue we curse other people that are made in Your image. (James 3:9 reference)  Why do You forgive us?  We say we love You and still keep sinning.  Why do You forgive us?  We spend time in prayer thanking You for your blessings and then we refuse to bless others.  Why do You forgive us?  We read our Bibles when we make time for it, but we also read other nonsense that is offensive to You.  Why do You forgive us?  We praise Jesus for His death on the cross for the atonement of our sins and then we nail Him to it again every time we trespass against You.  Why do You forgive us every single time?  I am so thankful for your endless supply of forgiveness!  I can’t fathom how You do it, for I am only one man.  You do this for every single person!  The compassion and grace and mercy that flow from You is absolutely amazing and I love You for it!  Thank you so much for forgiving me every time I sin!  You are worthy to be praised!  Amen

Repentance From Unbelievers

Father in heaven,

My heart grieves for those close to me that do not want to know You.  They are lost souls wandering wherever the devil takes them.  They are fulfilling their own desires of the flesh instead of yearning for the life that You give.  Father, use me or anyone that You please to show Christ-like love to them.  Father, I love these men and women and to think of them in eternal torment is tormenting me!  I pray that the seeds that are planted in them Lord will be grown by You.  You make miracles happen every day and I pray that You make one today in the lives of the lost.  I praise Your Holy Name!  Amen

Forgiveness For Children

Father,

Just as Job continually offered burnt offerings to you for the forgiveness of his children, (Job 1:5) I am praying for the forgiveness of mine.  Lord, only You know what they have done.  If they have sinned against You I pray that You would forgive them.  I pray that they would seek repentance to make things right with You.  Lord, if there is any sin that needs to be forgiven, I pray that You would soften their hearts and bring them safely into Your arms of grace and mercy.  I thank you for Your unlimited love for us!  Amen

Our Leaders

Omnipotent Father,

You are all-powerful!  Even Your thoughts produce action.  I pray for our leaders in the government.  Lord, they also have power, though it is limited.  I pray that they would use their positions wisely, for You are the One who has allowed them to lead us.  We need strong men and women of faith in these kinds of roles.  I pray that our men and women in authority will strive to live godly lives and to repent when necessary.  As in Animal Farm, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”  If there is any corruption, I pray that our leaders would repent and ask for forgiveness, so that our country doesn’t fall apart.  I thank you for our leaders and pray for their safety.  I love you Father!  Amen

Our Pastors

Dear Lord,

I pray for pastors around the world.  If there is any un-confessed sin active in their lives, I pray that You would bring them to the deepest valleys if that is what it takes to get them back on the narrow path.  We need strong pastors leading our congregations.  I pray that You would use the people closest to their pastors to keep them accountable, Lord.  Accountability is a must in every Christian’s life.  I thank you for our pastors, Lord, for they have a huge role to play here on earth.  They have many big responsibilities and I am so grateful that they accept the challenges of pastoring.  I love You, Lord!  Amen

Conclusion

Forgiveness is absolutely necessary in a Christian’s walk with the Lord.  “Forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.” (Luke 11:4)  God bless you as you live a life worthy of the calling!

Superbly done again my friend. I love the praying for the strength to forgive others for this ability is beyond and outside of ourselves to do. What a timely article to with all the recent tragedies. And the pastor’s prayer is supremely important (even though for a bit of selfish reasons) we God will not bless a ministry or man unless they have clean hands and a pure heart. I so enjoy learning from you and a more godly man of faith I know few better than you brother Derek.

Thank you friend! Although I consider myself to having a really long way to go with my faith and walk with the Lord, I really appreciate your comment Jack. It was such an encouragement to me. I was thinking about you when I wrote the prayer for pastors because I know how faithful you are to the Lord. You are a great example for pastors everywhere. God bless you brother!

This is such an inpsiring article. I wanted to share on the power of asking God to soften one’s heart and enable it to be forgive. During the time we were preparing to get married a lot happened that almost put an end to the relationship. A yr later i was bitter and angry and i’m certain i hated my inlaws. To be honest i was justified because they were in the wrong and never bothered to seek my forgiveness to this day. And ohhh i felt i had the right to all those negative feelings thots toward them.

I got tired after a while, it was draining being angry and i started to pray asking God to help me have a forgiving heart. This started one time i was praying the Lord’s prayer and i got stuck on “….forgive us our trspasses AS WE forgive others…”. Well it dawned on me that i did not want God using my style of forgiveness on me. It’s taken about 2 yrs but right now i’m at a point where my own patience with those who upset me suprises me. I have this peace in me and several pple have asked me how i can remain so calm when someone has really messed me up. Well i believe God is working on my ‘cheekiness and hard-heart”. God has done a lot so far. I do get upset but now it hardly lasts the day.

I believe my heart alone could never get to this point. I praise God and thank Him for teaching me to forgive. I’m a work in progress though.

Regards

ZA

Thank you for that encouraging story ZA. You are very right when you said that your “heart alone could never get to this point.” God is the One who has softened your heart and I am so glad! I’m so glad you’re learning to forgive your in-laws. Stand by God and lean on Him in the rough times. He can carry you through it! God bless you!

AMEN Allen! That is exactly right! God knows what is best for us and even though we can’t see through the trial in front of us, He can and He will always guide us through it! Faith always grows a bunch during trials when we give the trials to God and say “Lead me.” God bless you and thank you for your wonderful thought!

I’m 15 and I’ve been through so many hard times. I hated my dad, I had no love for him, because I thought that he made my life bad. He did things which made me mad. I’m sensitive, I get easily annoyed. Now, because of God’s love and guidance, I realize that those things he did are for my safety. I asked God for forgiveness for those things that I did by saying those prayers you posted and I feel really loving and blessed. Thank you! May God shower more blessings upon you and fulfill His plans for you! Amen!

Derek, your article is very inspiring but I feel something inside of me that is troubling…My nature is to be Godly as much as possible…I do not adulation likewise blowing my trumpet but i would pass for a nice person..I can not hold a grudge cos whethwe I like or not it will fade away..this is my nature..they say I have a big heart even though I know I’m far from perfect..I do not attatch any importance the anything of this world including money,fame.power.women name it…..I give without thinking,I sacrifice my comfort for people and I don’t even feel it even though I know that I’m not oblidged to be that way……unfortunately in return ….This has been my crime
It has been the reason why many has trampled on me,plot against me,take advatage of me..exploit me….back stab me..laugh at me and all…..I have no concern for peoples opinion but trust me…THe Pain is Real..I am an apostate of faith and how its attached to forgiveness as in Mark 11:23-24….And something terrible just happened to me….I had mercy on an apparently hungry stranger and payed him Money to carry out a simple job for me.. I related with this Man like he was my brother..gave him excess of what he needed to carry out the task….There was a deadline which he knew about….In return…THis guy absconded with my Money …money that I barely had..it was a loan I have to return…and this Guy disappeared with my Money…..He has put me through Pain and regret…again at a crucial time of my project..WHY ARE PEOPLE SO WICKED AND HEARTLESS…I was not stupid or foolish,I ddnt steal the money I gave him ..why did he do that to me??? I traced his house and saw that he lived even bats won’t pass the night at….Why did he do that…he is on run now…Even if I forgive this Man which I will of course whether I like or not…I think he has to pay for his actions….I strongly think He has to pay somehow…..I have never felt this way in my life but I think it won’t be wrong if I make him at least pay for his wickedness when I catch him….Pls Advice Me…Cos I will be freinds with him afterwards but he has to Pay .I can’t continue to give excuse for people why they treat me the way they DO…it won’t help in the Real World where we we live in…..To FORGIVE is indeed Divine…now I am hit with that reality..pls reply ASAP cos some eone is about to get messed up here and we will be frinds again Afterwards

Stanley, I feel for you brother. I am going to say what God has put on my heart for you. Revenge is not for us, but is only for the Lord. Trust me, this person will not go unpunished, but let God punish as you forgive this person. God wants us to be smart with our money, and giving out money that was on loan to you was not a wise decision, brother. Loans need to be paid back as quickly as possible. You have a big heart and I think maybe you just need to fine tune it a little. Instead of giving money to strangers and homeless people, take them out for a meal and pray with them. Then you know where your money is going. I am going to pray that God’s will be done in this situation, Stanley. As far as the backstabbing, exploitation, and people laughing at you, I want to direct you to read the book of James. One verse from that book says, “Consider it pure joy when you face trials of various kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-4) Brother I am so sorry this happened to you, but please let the Lord handle revenge. Pray for God to give you peace that passes all understanding and for Him to help you through this storm in your life. Prayers are on the way from me, brother.

Hello Greg. The fact is that we all are unworthy and Jesus’ death for us makes us worthy. You need to let go of these sins and get right with God, brother. God will forgive you as long as you repent. Tell Him you are sorry and do your very best to stay pure. God always gives us a way out of temptation, so if need be, leave a situation that will cause you to stumble. I will pray for you definitely! Your emptiness will go away when you cling to God during those times when you want to sin. When you allow God to bring you out of a temptation, you naturally draw closer to Him. Prayers are on the way!

Whoever is telling you to get over a death that you are grieving is not someone you need to be around. Stay around those that will uplift and encourage you. So sorry for your loss and the pain that others are giving you. God will sustain you. Stay strong through Him!
