6 Ways to Praise God During Hard Times

by Derek Hill on July 29, 2012 · Print Print · Email Email

More and more it seems that suffering and hurt are prevalent everywhere we look.  Those poor, innocent people that were murdered at a movie theatre in Colorado on July 20, 2012 are just one of the many tragedies in the lives of our fellow man today.  I think now more than ever, we need to stand as Christians and unite as one body and pray for our country.  Satan is so easily using people for his wicked agendas.  This is not a surprise, but it still hurts.  If you are hurting right now while reading this, know that your tender, loving Father has His arms open and He is always ready to hold you if you just let Him.  Many people that are hurting today are cursing God and some believers have abandoned God.  They did not have Christ as their solid foundation.  It is so important to have a strong faith through the best of times so when the winds blow, we will not be moved.  Trials and hard times come for a reason and that is to grow closer to our Father.  So, how can we praise Him during the darkest hours?  Let us look at scripture for clear examples.

Remembering Christ

Timothy 2:8-9 says, remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal.  But the word of God is not bound!  Remembrance of Christ and His death at Golgotha needs to be the center piece through which we praise God in the hard times.  When we suffer, we can remember that He suffered, and His suffering gave us freedom!  This is one reason some leave the faith.  They forgot what even brought them into God’s loving hand.  Praise be to God, our Almighty King that gave us the final sacrifice to atone for our sins!

Ways To Praise God Through Hard Times

Trials and hard times come for a reason and that is to grow closer to our Father.

Prayer

Every time we connect with God in prayer, we are praising Him because we are acknowledging our need to set our burdens on His strong shoulders.  Isaiah 25:4a says, for you have been a stronghold to the poor, a stronghold to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat.  These are things we can praise Him for while we are praying!  He takes care of His children!  Even in the darkest part of the storm, He is there as a stronghold to keep us standing against the crashing waves and raging winds.  A man on his knees in prayer can stand before any tragedy.

Through Song

When you read Psalms, you can find so many verses about God’s children singing praise even in the midst of hard times.  David writes in Psalm 142:4b-7, no one cares for my soul.  I cry to you, O Lord; I say, “you are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.”  Attend to my cry, for I am brought very low!  Deliver me from my persecutors, for they are too strong for me!  Bring me out of prison, that I may give thanks to your name!  The righteous will surround me, for you will deal bountifully with me.  This particular Psalm was a written prayer, but it could just as well be sung.  So many songs today are written straight from the Psalms.  One particular song that has always touched my heart on this issue of hard times and suffering is “There Will be a Day” by Jeremy Camp.  This song always brings tears to my eyes.

Time in the word

Anything that we do as Christians that focuses our time on God brings Him glory and praise.  When we look to His word for healing and guidance, we again are telling God that we need Him and we praise Him for His sovereign nature in all circumstances.  In Hebrews 4:15-16 it says, for we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.  This is a passage of love that speaks to all who are hurting.  Jesus was tempted in every way so we can be completely firm in our belief in Him.  My fellow brothers and sisters, write these verses on your hearts.  We can have confidence in our Father in all circumstances.  Stay in the word!  It can heal the broken hearted.

Fasting

Fasting is an outlet that provides a spiritual and physical reliance on God.  Fasting is not set on any particular facet.  Many people fast from food for an extended amount of time, but fasting really involves giving up anything that means a lot to you in order to spend time with God instead.  This is a precious way to praise Him.  When you fast you stop “me” and focus on Him.  I have had the opportunity to participate in the 30 hour famine a few times and I cannot describe the feelings of reliance that I had personally with God in the final 10 hours when food sounded amazing and I gave my cravings to Him instead.  He has sustained me every time I have fasted.  The spiritual bond always grows with fasting because God is feeding that bond as you rely on Him.

Forgiveness

Forgiveness always reflects praise on the Father.  We forgive out of obedience to Christ.  We forgive because it is always the right thing to do.  There is real spiritual maturity and growth when we can look at specific people that have wronged us personally and forgive them.  This is because sin always comes from the devil and not from the individuals themselves.  There is massive spiritual warfare fighting for us every day.  Satan’s legion of demons are always hunting.  It is our job as believers to rebuke them with scripture and always forgive those who trespass against us.  The true fault is always against the devil and his wicked schemes.  Even Christ on the cross asked His Father to forgive those crucifying Him(Luke 23:34).  May we all strive to be like that!  Praise be to our Sustainer in all circumstances!Looking for some more music related articles?

Great work here again Derek. In my message this morning I mentioned when Paul and Silas were in prison they began singing hymns and that’s when the earthquake hit and they were freed. I do know that God inhabits the praises of His people yet even more so when these praises are during times of tribulation and griefs. Well done friend.

Thank you Jack. i agree with you. God is worthy of praise all of the day. But, we really grow closer in the hard times when we praise Him. This is when our loyalty and devotion to God really shines and He always blesses that. This is also when others that know our faith can really understand that we do love God and possibly come to know Him as well. It is such an awesome witness to others.

i stumbled across this today by accident. I have been struggling with a nasty custody war in which i have grown bitter and want to “win”. but forgiveness is where winning really lies. I have custody of my children i should praise him. I should forgive as many times as their father does me wrong and that is hard to remember. thanks fo an amazing message

Derek Hill August 3, 2012 at 4:59 pm

Thank you Alisa. Forgiveness is the key to your healing. If you hold onto hate and bitterness, it will eat at your soul. Give everything to God. He can carry you through the darkest times of your life. Stay in the Word and prayer!! There is power in both!

God Bless!

Thank you very much, but how can a person pray to God during the hard time?in order to overcome it.

Hello Ajayi. I quoted a passage from Psalm 55:22 to Angela above, “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you.” A heavy heart carries the burden alone. What ever tragedy or hard time comes, tell God about it. Give it to Him. Rely on His love and tender care to carry you through it. He will never leave nor forsake you. We don’t always get the answer we want, though. When praying, ask God, “Father, what do you want me to learn from this hard time?” instead of, “Father please take this hard time away from me.” He will show you what you should learn and you will draw closer to Him because of it. When you approach God with an attitude of “God knows what is best for me,” your spirit will grow tremendously. God Bless you!

Derek

I am finding it difficult to pray these days, i need your advise.

Reply

Derek Hill August 9, 2012 at 9:42 pm

Hello Mador. Romans 8:26 says, “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” The Holy Spirit will groan for you when you approach the throne in prayer. Satan loves it when we get down or feel ashamed or guilty about things we have done or things that have been done to us. God loves us all so much. Go to Him in prayer. Know that He yearns for you to come to Him because He loves you. Whatever you are going through, God can take you through it and you will be closer to Him if you completely trust Him. God bless you.

In His Name Always,
Derek

I’ve recently been through a series of bad events, I stopped counting at 8, every time something went wrong I stayed calm and hoped that it would be the last, but soon after something new happens.
Needless to say I eventually got pretty fed up and frustrated cause most of these events were beyond my control.
Basically just waiting out the storm now, nothing else I can do, but it surely does not help for a positive and peaceful mindset.

Hello Christof. I am sorry to hear about what you are going through. I really encourage you to seek God in prayer. Ask God what He wants you to learn from the trials that you are going through. When you cling to God in suffering, you will always grow closer to Him through it. It can be hard to be positive when you are in the storm. I would also encourage you to talk with your closest Christian friends or a pastor at your church(if you have one). Get them involved in prayer for you. Prayer is powerful. I am actually in the biggest storm of my life right now. I am in your place right now. Everything that is happening to me is out of my control, but I can say that God is good and He has provided for me every step of the way. Don’t lose faith brother. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. (Phil 4:13)

In His Name Always,
Derek

Thanks Derek, yes indeed, if only we knew there was a purpose behind this, if we knew God was trying to teach us a life skill or something, then the suffering would be very valuable… do we know its God testing us, could it not also be “something else” trying to reap havoc in our lives, or could it be stupid mistakes/decision that we make – every action has a reaction… as you can see I’ve investigated a lot of avenues already :)

I am convinced that anything that comes our way from Satan is because God allows it to bring us closer to Him. When you read the book Job. You can get a better picture of this. Every time Satan wants to cause harm to Job or his family, God puts limitations on it. Satan can only give us whatever God allows. So, keep fighting the good fight and know that God is in control of even what Satan is allowed. God will be with you sir. God Bless!

Hello Asesela. Sorry to interrupt my friend and I can’t speak for Derek. I don’t think an occasional scratch and win ticket may be a big deal but we have an article called “Is It a Sin for a Christian to Gamble?” at this link:

http://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/is-it-a-sin-for-a-christian-to-gamble/

You might not agree but thought you might be interested. Derek may have a different opinion. Sorry Derek. I know this is not my article but thought I’d chime in on this subject since we have an article that addresses this. Thanks all.

Derek Hill October 4, 2012 at 7:04 pm

Always feel free to chime in Jack. As long as truth is spoken, that is what matters. No worries :)

Hello again Asesela. I feel the same way as Jack. Buying a scratch off ticket every now and then is ok. The problem is when it becomes a habitual issue. Don’t forget that your money really is not your money. It is God’s money and we should always try to use it wisely. If we keep buying tickets to win back what we have lost, then there is a cycle that is hard to break. I encourage you to buy these tickets every once in a while and not even once a week. I watched my friend lose $27 on tickets he bought today. Now he is out of that money.

Hello Celine. I don’t know your situation but I do know what God says in His Word. When you got married, you made a choice to leave your family and cleave to your husband. (Gen 2:24) I recommend standing by your husband because he is more important then the rest of your family. He is the one that you have committed your life to here on earth. I know all about issues with in-laws and immediate family and I learned over the years that the Bible is true. Your mate is your companion for life here and they deserve your all. Blessings upon you, for I know it is difficult right now. Stay in constant prayer to God and keep looking to Him for guidance.

But the truth is that trials and problems come to you no matter where you live, so keep asking God what He wants you to learn through the trials you face right now. I am doing the same in my own trials. “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect that you may be complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:2-4) God bless you brother. If you need specific prayer needs, let me know! I will pray for you!

I’m going through a very difficult painful custody battle with the father of my 14 mnth old daughter. The father of my child and I dated for 7 years. When I told him I was expecting, he asked me to abort child and broke up with me. I went through pregnancy alone for the most part. He never went to any MD appointments. When I filed for child support , he served me with legal papers, he was awareded 50/50. He had mentioned to me he would fight for custody to not pay no child support. I have been in deep depression, that man is doing it for the money. Money has always been his god. My baby girl will be seperated from me unfairly. Him and his family have hurt me soooo deeply. I took the first step to forgive them. My heart, soul, and spirit are shattered because I know his true intentions.

Praise God!! Hello Derek. I was searching for ways to praise and worship our loving Father God, when I came across your article. The title caught my eye, “Ways to Praise God During Hard Times”. As always God has lead me to, not only what I was searching for, but also what I need. I too am experiencing hard times, but I count it all joy because I know the LORD our God is refining me. As I read the comments and statements, I said a prayer of thanks to God for you Derek. He blesses us through others and you have been a blessing to me this very moment. Halellujah!!! I am fully aware that God tests us out of love and for our own benefit and I thank Him for this, but I never thought to ask Him what it is He wants me to learn from the testing. Because of you, I have added this question to my prayers. Would you also pray that He reveals His lesson to me? May the Holy Spirit continue to work through you. In the love of Jesus, Barbara.

Thank you sir Derek for this wonderful work. God bless you sir!
Just want to share these words from the Darlene Zschech song titled “In Jesus Name”… I find it so powerful… @ Henry: Yes it is true that the battle is always for the Lord, God is always fighting for us. Even in very hard time of our life just call Jesus for there is power in His Name.

“In Jesus Name”
God is fighting for us,
God is on our side
He has overcome, yes
Hes has over come
We will not be shaken
We will not be moved
Jesus You are here.

Carrying our burdens,
Covering our shame
He has overcome, yes
Hes has over come
We will not be shaken
We will not be moved
Jesus You are here

I will live, I will not die
The resurrection power of Christ
Alive in me and I am free
In Jesus Name.

I will live, I will not die
I will declare and lift You high
Christ revealed and I am healed
In Jesus Name

God is fighting for us,
Pushing back the darkness
Lighting up the Kingdom
That cannot be shaken
In the Name of Jesus
Enemy’s defeated
And we will shout it out
Shout it out

I too am going through some very difficult times right now. I have been weakened…..never had this experience in my life. I see it as God wanting to draw me closer to Him, as i have been neglectful in my committment to Him. Earlier this week i fasted and in my open prayer to Him I asked for Him to show me what He wants me to learn from this. I have no control over the situation or its outcome so i have no choice but to give it totally to Him and to depend on Him solely…..whilst i have given it to Him i am weak. (not able to eat, etc). I have been singing and praising and worshipping God now and every time i do this, it pulls me out of the depressive state. There is a new song by Tye Tribbett…’He Turned it’ that i was introduced to on the very day i was fasting and it has been such a blessing.

Thank you so much for this article Derek. It affirms my thoughts and belief. I will continue to endeavour to draw closer to God….pray more, read and meditate on His word, fast, worship and most of all forgive.

God bless you and all the readers. May we find strength Him to overcome our challenges.

Derek God bless you richly. I am so blessed to have stumbled at this blog. I am always so happy when i see young people dedictated to the work of God. I want us to be friends
