10 Bible Verses About Knowledge

by Josh Wiley on April 21, 2011 · Print Print · Email Email

Have you asked God for wisdom or knowledge in prayer? King Solomon was noted as being one of the wisest men that ever lived.  The true wisdom that came from Solomon was his prayer to God asking for an understanding mind. Solomon asked for knowledge and God gave it to him! If you are seeking discernment or understanding in an area of your life, I pray that you would surrender it to God and ask Him to give you the knowledge and wisdom that only He can supply. These Bible verses are about knowledge, wisdom and discernment. They are just a small sample of the number of Bible verses and readings you can find on this subject. I pray this sparks your interest to look up these passages and read the context they were taken from.

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge

Wisdom

Proverbs 2:10-11  for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you,

Fear of The Lord

Proverbs 1:7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Job 28:28  And he said to man,’Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom,  and to turn away from evil is understanding.'”

Prayer For Wisdom and Knowledge

James 1:5  If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God,who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Biblical Example of Praying for Wisdom- Solomon

1 Kings 3:5-12  At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.” And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. And now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in.  And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.

Discernment

Daniel 2:21  He changes times and seasons;  he removes kings and sets up kings;he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;

Psalm 119:66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments.

Proverbs 16:22 Good sense is a fountain of life to him who has it, but the instruction of fools is folly.

Proverbs 1:5 Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance,

Ecclesiastes 7:12 For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

Christian Quotes About Knowledge

The ultimate ground of faith and knowledge is confidence in God.  ~ Charles Hodge

Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know a great deal, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.  ~ Charles Spurgeon

The Bible was not given to increase our knowledge but to change our lives.  ~ D.L. Moody

Knowledge is power.  ~ Francis Bacon

Knowledge is but folly unless it is guided by grace.  ~ George Herbert

Thanks for getting the word out there.
Do you have any input on how I might explain why God forbade man (Adam) from eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil?

There was a tree of life and a tree of death in the garden. The tree of death represents man pursuing evil that is called good, self will. The fig leaves were man’s plan of salvation that Cain followed offering fruits and vegetables on the altar that ends with eternal death. God gave them the skins of animals as a covering for their nakedness (lost condition) until a better sacrifice (Jesus) would be given. Those in Christ rose from the grave with him at that time. (It is so sure.)

I consider the verses of Proverbs 2:2-7 crucial in seeking wisdom, knowledge and understanding. It is written, ” …if my people fail, it will be due to lack of knowledge.”
My quest for wisdom begin in search of “What does God want me to have knowledge of.” My phrased has shorten to “What God wants me to know.” In search of wisdom, we are to desire it so strongly we cry out to God for it. Also, beg and try with all our heart to gain understanding. Only the Lord gives them. w w w.God2Jesus2Me
